Why Does L.S.U. Have Such A Tough Time Recruiting "Great" Quarterbacks?

Let me preface my remarks by saying I am no means a L.S.U. fan. In fact, I have a deep rooted negative feeling regarding their football program. It was L.S.U. that refused to continue the Tulane rivalry, even though, it is common knowledge that L.S.U. would not lose one cent by keeping the rivalry alive. Of course Nick Sabin, brought L.S.U. back to its glory only to realize the serious recruiting problem that exits. So he departed. Look at the QB who led L.S.U. to the National Championship for the first time in years, with Sabin as coach. Before that, and since, no class act at QB. Why? You have to go way back to the days of Coach Paul Dietzel, to find a well recruited set of good quarterbacks, who could manage a game.
Here is a mild list of quarterbacks that L.S.U. had no excuse for not recruiting, who actually wanted to attend L.S.U.
1. Joe Ferguson - born in Louisiana and played high school football and led his team to a State Championship. Went to Arkansas. Said publicly he wanted to go to L.S.U.
2. Norris Weese - born in Louisiana and played high school football for four years in Louisiana. Played well at Ole Miss but said publicly his first choice was L.S.U.
3. Peyton Manning - who told his dad Archie he wanted no part of Ole Miss and he wanted his own identity. Played high school football four years in New Orleans, and expressed interest in L.S.U., but was told they were not interested. Vols got lucky.
I can go on, but we have to go way back to Y.A. Title, who played for the NY football Giants, and Alvin Dark, who played for the Giants in MLB, who both started at L.S.U. at QB, to really find two that somehow landed at L.S.U. miraculously.
I had the priviledge of talking to ex Ole Miss Coach, the great Johnny Vaught, who in the eyes of Bear Bryant, was one of the best football coaches in college football history. Coach Vaught, a true gentleman, before his death, told me in Biloxi, Mississippi, where we drank coffee in the mornings regularly, that while he was blessed to have great quarterbacks like, Jake Gibbs, who ended up playng MLB for the Yankees, and others, he never had the widespread talent that L.S.U. had. Yet L.S.U. never won the National Championship (their first) with their best teams. Despite the poor coaching and pathetic recruiting, they still wee capable of beating anyone on any given day.
So here we go again! Another talented Tiger team, another pathetic northern coach who simply does not have the skill or ability to recruit in the south, leads his Tigers into this season, with a QB who while a great athlete, is subject to "do anything" at anytime, that might cost L.S.U. a game. Despite all this, I'm not sure L.S.U. won't overcome all this, and possibly have a great season, and maybe, just maybe even a shot at the National Championship.
In closing, when Sabin departed, any hope of a long term football program of success went with him. Despite all of the above, yes, they will beat Oregon soundly. This prediction is more about how bad I think Oregon will play, as opposed to how well L.S.U. will play. If L.S.U. just merely does not turn the ball over, they will cover. The only thing L.S.U. better start worrying about covering, is their position of Head Football Coach. Simply put, Les Myles, is no recruiter, and secondly he has no clue once they lose enough games, how fast these L.S.U. donars and influencial diehards will send him on his way. Last chance Les, or else, start looking for another position somewhere up north where its cold and there are plenty of pictures Of "Bo" around.

hmm, not sure i can agree with any of the above. recruiting is not the problem, perhaps developing is what you were getting at? not sure

1) jamarcus russell was a huge (in all ways) recruit in 2003 and they pulled him away from Alabama and Florida State
2) ryan perilloux was #2 rated QB in country in 2005 and they signed him over Texas who were front-runners all along
3) matt flynn was a 4-star big signing also in 2003.
4) jarrett lee was a 4-star signed away from almost every B12 team in 2007
5) jordan jefferson was scout #18 qb, player of year in LA, and courted by half the SEC
6) zach mettenberg #1 jc qb last year signed over Bama, Miss, aTm, and others
7) jarrard randall last year signed over oregon, ohio st, mich, fla st

not a bad 8 year run for recruiting qb's especially considering they weren't leaders for russell, randall, and perilloux until last minute

and as far as miles being a bad recruiter i can't remember any really top LA player he didn't get other than joe mcknight. basically when i see "Alabama" listed as offering a kid in LA i know he's going to LSU

now if you want to call him a fragile game coach i'm with ya

Just like Texas you can recruit but you have to develop players. You also have to keep players from transferring out like Texas did with Snead and Kinne. In the right system you do not have to have a great QB just one that can manage the offense and not make mistakes. So far Jefferson and Lee have not really panned out. I think the addition of Kragthorpe will help both these guys and Mettenberger is there now. They only lost 2 games in 2010 for crying out loud so it could be worse. In this case I think it will get better.

I think Kragthorpe was the best hire that Miles has made to this point. He is a QB "specialist" who not only has college experience, he also has NFL QB coaching experience. I believe he coached Drew Bledsoe. So your looking at a coach that will not only improve the QB game, it will probably trickle down to the recievers and overall offensive system. So I look for the QB's to develop a little better for the Tigers for here on out as long as Miles can keep Kragthorpe on his staff. Which may not be easy. Miles had had to play musical chairs with his OC's since he became HC. First with Jimbo Fisher, then Crowton and now Kragthorpe.

jamarscus russel came down to LSU/Tennessee , Alabama was never even involved. ignorance is a funny thing.... Janzen Jackson was a big time in state player he missed out on

he recruits black qb's,this will change with kragthrope, they will sign some 5 star white boy soon enough. honestly ,baton rouge is like another world, people are wierd, cerebral players dont want to go there. someone like jamarcus russel who could barely speak english sees nothing wrong with cajun talk. but to a jake heaps type they are foreign

It all goes back to developing the players you recruit. Successful teams do this. As far as LSU vs Oregon goes, if Oregon plays it's game, LSU has no chance.

russell was and is a lifelong tide fan and he dropped bama interest once our ncaa sanctions were announced. you were about 11 years old that year, right?

fn idiot, dude even wore a giant Alabama elephant necklace with "BAMA" above it to the nfl draft and constantly sporting his tide gear you moron

http://www.aolnews.com/2007/06/29/jamarcus-russell-bama-boy/

everyone in bama, but apparently not in tennessee, knows he was a Tide commit if not for the recruiting violations

(by the way it gets really old owning you everytime you touch a keyboard)

ignorance. you want me to have his high school coach call you?

wearing "bama boy" around your neck after your college days are over means shit. i cant believe you are that stupid...wait, yes i can

Alabama was never a factor and never involved in his recruiting process. and Auburn was more of a threat than FSU. you have no idea what you are talking about on this subject/ being stupid enough to post message board links of a codeine addict wearing gear of a team coming off a BCS title in 2010 and thinking thats some sort of proof and changes what happened in 2003 is foolish

Next time the overall first choice shows up at the NFL draft sporting gear and jewelry from a rival school be sure to let me know

but all worked out just beautifully for me, how about you?

jamarcus doesn't consider going to his dream school because of the violations so he joins Saban and a few years later CNS is holding a national championship trophy in Pasadena while most of the country forget to name Tennessee as a school that plays SEC football

keep digging up those recruiting violation and arrest threads to make it seem like other schools can catch UcheaT on either front. then again until they stop calling it The Fulmer Cup it's really a lost cause

rolltide!

Mettenger, a Georgia boy, has real potential if he develops a little discipline and stops with the off the field antics. That's a big if. Richt gave him every chance at UGA. He disappointed a lot of people, me included. Hope he's learned his lesson. Did he do well in the spring game at LSU? I remember seeing a bit of it but not enough to have an opinion.

In order to speak the truth, you first have to know it. Belive me, you are not making any friends in here, so if that is your goal (which is utterly stupid), you are succeeding. If you are not here to make friends, just why are you here hotshot? It certainly is not to impress us with your imaginary vast knowledge of college football.

"homers dont take too kindly to be outted eh?" - this from the biggest and most frustrated homer on the board. Have you guys got a new AD yet or is she still running the show. What a joke.

Two years ago (before he got the boot), Mettenger looked seasoned star in the G-Day game back in 2010. I was so excited about seeing this guy lead the dawgs, but he couldn't keep his hands out the cookie jar. Great talent IMO>
