Declared 2016 Democratic Presidential Candidate

Jim Webb

Veteran, author, former Senator from Virginia and bi-partisan lawmaker

James Henry Webb
Born: February 9th, 1946 (age 69)

Jim Webb is a rare breed in Washington, a politician who has claimed both parties and who believes in bi-partisan solutions. Webb served in the administration of Republican President Ronald Reagan as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs and the Secretary of the Navy. Most recently, he served as a Democratic Senator from Virginia from 2007 until 2013.

Webb is a native of Missouri and grew up in a military family. This led him to pursue a military career and after a year at the University of Southern California, he earned an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. After graduating from the Naval Academy, Webb served in Vietnam as a Marine Platoon Commander and he received a Navy Cross, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts.

After Vietnam, Webb pursued a career in law and wrote the first of many books. Webb quickly developed a reputation as a veteran’s advocate and would often represent veterans pro bono. Webb’s tenure in the Reagan Administration allowed him to actively work on behalf of the military and of veterans, and he worked to reverse the low morale that had infiltrated the Marine Corps since the Vietnam War. His tenure as Secretary of the Navy came to an end when he resigned after refusing to support the policy of reducing the size of the US Navy.

After leaving official Washington, Webb concentrated on his writing, and he was often consulted for his opinion on current military matters and candidates running for office. Forever the independent-minded individual, Webb would evaluate each situation, primarily on how it would affect the military. He often spoke out against actions he felt were damaging to the military and he endorsed both Republican and Democratic politicians based on their positions vis-à-vis the military.

In 2006, in large part because of the situation in Iraq, Webb decided to challenge incumbent Senator George Allen of Virginia, in what many pundits considered a long-shot bid. Under most circumstances, the popular Allen would have easily won re-election, but two factors conspired to see Webb defeat Allen. First, it was anti-GOP year because of the unpopularity of George W. Bush and the Iraq War, and second because Allen was caught on videotape using an ethnic slur against an Indian-American student.

Webb served in the Senate from 2007 until 2013. During his tenure, he was a top advocate for the military, serving on the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Foreign Relations. He also championed reforms in the Criminal Justice System.

Webb decided against running for a second Senate term and announced that he would not run for re-election in February 2011. He cited his frustration with the partisan gridlock that often prevented the Senate from major accomplishments.

Jim Webb announced his decision to enter the race for the Democratic presidential nomination on July 2, 2015 with a blog post

Because they are the party of a controlled message. They want a single voice, they're enabled and enhanced by their media cohorts. They need to keep it simple for their flock, they need to lie to their swing vote and they simply have no use for open minded honesty

At the end of the day, it just doesn't matter. They're all Pauls in one way or another, including educated professionals like teachers who want job and income security

He's an interesting guy. He's probably too soft on the environment for many lefties. Admire anyone with 2 purple hearts, but I don't match up very well with him on most issues (especially taxation). He has literally zero chance in this race. Can't compete financially.

I'm sorry but you just described the Republican Party as well right here. It's been the same old message for years

The Republican base is not a coalition of special interests, we're a bunch of people who work and raise our kids together and only want smaller government and the right to pursue happiness. The party of special interests wants government to fund their interests.

If Russ likes Webb, it's likely he is less of a right winger than you would like to think.

I have said many times that I am an independent. I am not liberal but I am anti-Obama which is why many classify me as far right. I have already said on my Hillary thread that the Dem's need anyone other than Hillary and if they win they win. If it is Hillary than I would go for whoever the Republicans put up against her.

If Jim Webb was on top of the dem polls......Russ would be connecting imaginary dots on him as well. It's only because he's no threat that Russ would post that.

We are talking about a guy who bashes George Soros and thinks Dems follow a playbook of a guy who died decades ago......while claiming the Koch brothers are good people.

Russ is a far right winger and all his nonsense rhetoric shows that....he just doesn't know it.

All I'm saying is no far right winger is supporting Webb.

Supporting might be a stretch. Russ would vote for every single republican candidate before Webb.

If Webb all the sudden became the front runner.......Russ would find that he got his haircut from a guy that has a 2nd cousin in the black panthers.

I saw Vitards quote on your post (I have him on ignore because he is ignorant lol. What a dumb ass. He can read my mind but he can't read Hillary's or Obama's lol. No threat he said, I am the one who found this candidate and I like his resume. He is someone who works with both parties hello. the Tard doesn't get it and he never will but putting words into someone's mouth is as low as you can go. He assumes all the time and we all know what that means. The Koch guys are good people and Soros is Soros. He thinks that anyone who does not think like him is a right winger, that tells you all you need to know.

I don't think Russ is far right. He just detests liars, theives and hypocrites as most of us do.

RR, Zit, and Joe are further right on the political spectrum than Russ on many issues.

Smaller government and lowering the debt. We are penalizing the next generations irresponsibly. You hit it.

Why would you support the Koch brothers? Their strategy to fund elections is basically a giant middle finger to democracy.

They're basically pimps but instead of hoes they just got politicians. This is why someone like Trump is leading the polls because of how bad the process has gotten when 2 people are going to spend a billion dollars on all funding combined during an election cycle.

That's why we lack for innovation in this country because big money doesn't have to continue to compete, they just lobby to maintain status quo.
