why take a timeout and give vanderjagt a chance to regroup and the colts a chance to calmly line up and kick?

i actually thought they waited too long, give themselves the most time to kick their own FG if he hits it..

Not the first time I have seen Vandy miss a kick in the clutch, never forget the playoffs vs Miami.

The Colts had plenty of time to kick the fg. The TO came with 28 seconds left.

Very difficult kick in a swirling 15 to 20 MPH wind. The time out also gave the Pats time to get the personnel they wanted on the field for a possible block. Most likely he misses that FG either way.

A complete no brainer, and what separates the horrific NFL coaching bretheran vs. NE's coaching staff.

Of course, we burn our time out. We have 30 seconds, PLENTY of time to get a fg ourselves. In game betting would have NE maybe -125 for an OT, but maybe -150 if they were receiving a kick tied, with 30 seconds to play.

An obvious logical choice. That 9 out of 10 coaches would botch.

I feel he had 63% chance of nailing it...The ball didn t quite turn over completely, causing it to 'knuckle' off...damn shame anyone had to lose!

Yeah, what everyone else said...there was no intention of freezing Vanderjagt...they were conceding he would make the kick and giving themselves the best chance to win without having to go to OT.

On a related note...

Everyone talks about how "Vanderjagt was perfect last year when he made every extra point and every field-goal attempt" -- while that's statistically correct and accurate according to the record books, most people forget that he missed a field goal vs. the Bucs last year in that miracle Monday night comeback, but the Bucs were flagged for "leaping" and he was given another chance.
