does anyone remember a race book in las vegas about 15 years ago that was nearby the original hilton? it was a large two story building with what they called the vip turf club member room upstairs (large players only). they lasted only about a year or so. the story was they were hit so hard on winning colors future bets for the derby that they couldn't sustain and went under shortly after.

It was the SPORT of KINGS

My good friend JACK LOVE was the manager, and yes he got hammered on horse futures which eventually led to his downfall and also that of the place itself.

They tried to be a true "book" (non pari-mutual) after everyone else had gone pari-mutual. I recall reading they got consistently hammered by some big bettors.

The sky was the limit for their horse wagers.

Last I heard, Jack was in the real estate business.

Was a former pitcher at Pepperdine and once struck out Barry Bonds when he played at ASU.

I had Winning Colors to show in the Derby because I had

I was in Vegas for that derby, and a bartender at Barbary Coast told me Winning Colors was the steam. Almost recouped 2 trips worth of craps losses.

Sport of Kings

Now a club called The Beach. In 1990 when it opened on Tuesday night they also had a Hockey Night with all the games being shown on their 8 big screens and period betting was available. Great buffett upstairs in the VIP Race Book.

They offered a bonus of a certain percentage to any winning wager. They operated under the assumption that nobody could beat racing on a regular basis.Ummm , they were wrong .

Fishhead- I thought that Jack Lysight was the manager at Sport of Kings. Didn't he come over from the Riviera? I never went in the place but heard it was a nice joint and they took some big wagers on horses.

I know Jack Love was in the race and sports business for quite some time but he never struck me as an overly bright guy and I find it a little hard to believe that anyone would put him in charge of a place that handled as much horse action as Sport of Kings did.

As I recall, Love came after Lysight.

So Fish, do you know Davey H. Lysight's right hand man at the riviera? Sonny Reisner was asked in the gold sheet his top 5 sharpest sports bettors. he said davey H. as long as he controls his temper. if you know him you know what i mean.

Yes knew Davey, and also being the modest guy that I am, asked Sonny why he didnt list me in his top five. :icon_conf

He simply mentioned he forgot and slammed his fist on the table with disgust that he had forgotten about yours trully. :)

I never let him live that one down.
