My maternal grandmother was born in Sweden, my maternal
grandfather was born in Norway.
I am >= 50% Scandinavian.
I have traced parts of my maternal tree into the late 1500s in
Norway and Sweden.
You probably already know, that family tracing is somewhat of a pain in the ass,
because historically, the kids didn't take the last name of the father,
but the name of the farm they lived on.
Oftentimes the children would take their father's first name and add "son" on the end. Sven Larsson would have a son named Ole who would be called Ole Svenson.
In Iceland, sometimes the females would also take the name of their father's first name but would have a name different from their brothers. So if Hallmar Haroldsson had a daughter named Lara, her name would become Lara Hallmarsdottir.
