My dad retired when he was 62... and he tells me.its the hardest thing he's ever done in his life... He is a wealthy guy... sooo how can it be so difficult whwn.money isn't an issue??

1. Good hobbies?
2. Don't drink too.much?

What are your keys to a successful healthy retirement?

I too am tired & retired. Actually retiring wasn't so hard, as much as the growing old part was for me. A good part of my life was spent in the military. Which by it's very nature moves you around a lot. Thus you lose track of friends, during the process. In my case I also lost connections w/HS friends, as I went in during my senior yr, right after Korea broke out. So now I'm @ the end of the long trail & those guys I did know are all gone. I'll be 81 in May, luckily I have my kids & my Bro. Had a lot of ladies over the yrs, & once I got sober life was a lot of fun. BOL to all you young men, when you get to this point you regret what you DIDN'T do more than what you did. So live life to it's fullest while you can.

My dad retired 2.5 years ago at the age of 59. He worked 40 years for the same company. He was pretty miserable the first 2-3 months out of boredom. Then he joined a golf club and he plays golf every morning mon-fri with the same group of 15 or so other retired guys. They drink a few pitchers of beer afterwards and settle up their bets (most you can lose is $10.50, not real serious bets), he is back home by 12:30. He has 8 grandkids so the wkds he stays busy going to soccer games and what not. It's worked out very well for my parents after I thought they were going to kill each other at first.

My mom makes childrens clothes and sells them on the Etsy.com so he runs her errands and goes to the post office for her in the afternoons.

Awsome guys...

Establishing the Balance of Work/play seems to be the hardest part... finding self fulfillment so you don't go BONKERS..

i knew a whole bunch of guys who used to do this, only they werent retired. they were civil servants in the 80's. they would stop at the office in the morning on the way to the golf course and hang there coat on the back of their chair, and pick it up on the way home after lunch.

Its about keeping your brain busy. My father in law retired and spent a year fixing anything and everything at his house. Since then, hes going crazy with boredom.

My fathers biggest problem was boredom as well, he had no real hobbies other than work and the beach.

A part time job that gets him out of the house may help.

the hardest part is deciding whether to bet sports, horses, or play poker.
if none of those options are available, which is rare, then and only then
spend time with the wife. a man must have priorities.

Been thinking about retiring for the last 3 years. Now 59 years old, been teaching for 34 years. When I do retire will move to Vegas because Texas is boring. In Vegas won't be bored or lonely because that is what retirement could end up as.

I retired a couple of years ago. My wife still works. The hardest thing for me was to not sit on my ass all day in front of my computer screen. Really was just a matter of finding a daily routine that included running errands, exercise, and some volunteering. Retirement rocks!

My grandfather is the only person in my family who has retired. He was in the military during WWII, college professor and then worked for the NSA. He just turned 90. He volunteered a lot of his time up until recently. My grandmother(88) still works.
