ESPN has learned that USC head coach Rick Majerus, who accepted the position on Tuesday, will resign that position on Monday. He will remain as a college basketball analyst on ESPN.
Majerus signed a five-year deal to coach the Trojans and wasn't scheduled to take over the team until April 1. However, he would have begun recruiting immediately and was to fill the assistant's position vacated when Jim Saia was promoted to interim head coach.
Majerus would have succeeded coach Henry Bibby, who was fired after nine years at USC on Dec. 4, just four games into the season.
Majerus was out of coaching for nearly a year after retiring for health reasons after 15 years at Utah. The Utes appeared in the NCAA Tournament 10 times under Majerus, including an appearance in the national championship game in 1998, which they lost to Kentucky.
