It is obvious to me that there has been a consolidation going on now for several years in our industry. The weaker books are going out of business or being gobbled up by the stronger ones....

When all is said and done, I believe there will only be a handful of sports books left to compete against one another...

Anyone want to take a stab at who will be around when this day comes?

A handful? Seriously???

There are hundreds now, you think it will narrow to a handful? Yikes. That would suck.

Pinnacle, Olympic, WSEX, WWTS, CRIS

Keep hearing about all these sportsbook consolidations and how were going to be left with few sportsbooks to choose from as players.

Meanwhile, seems there are more new books sprouting up than old ones consolidating, a few that advertise on this site.

On a related note, been hearing for years about the soon demise of BONUSES.

Meanwhile, bonuses are as strong as they have EVER been in variety and quanity.

Good post, Fish. Some books have gone but others seem to constantly pop up? Are there really less books now than there were, say 2 years ago? I dunno. I think there will be some consolidation, but it's hard to imagine having only a handful of books. That just doesn't sound right to me. But Shrink knows more about this stuff than I.

Guys,

There used to be more sportsbooks around a few years ago than there are today. The good ones will survive but the weaker ones won't. As Darwin one said, it will be the survival of the fittest. I truly believe that there will be less sports books around when this day comes than most of you think...

D2bets,

I agree with everyone on your list but I would certainly add at least a couple more like GRANDE for starters...

I don't think Olympic will be around at the end either because their owner wants out...

The way VIP is always trying to expand, I think they will be around for the long haul.

The conservative books with broad products is where the smart money goes.

Bet365
VIP
BoDog

The sharps continue to be hurt by both Pinnacle and high bonus books
CRIS
Oly

Then there are the publics
WWTS
Canbet/IAS
Sportingbet
BOS

How about something like:
VIP aquire either WWTS or BoDog
Bet365 aquire VIP or BoDog

CRIS aquire 5Dimes or Holly

Pinnacle aquire Mansion for its exchange

Tow and Sting create their own special union (caught on video of course)

Fish,

In business consolidation usually leads to fewer operations, but still leads to some new upstarts as well. The idea being consolidations free up capital that can be put into new business opportunities and/or the strong returns sellers get attract competition to the space. I think these are very likely for this business. The biggest will get bigger and more efficient, but since so many people like doing things in less than "bargain" ways such as calling in all plays and not line shopping, there will still be room for little guys to take a small piece of the business. The best part though is what gets crowded out are the people looking for a quick buck and going to shady directions to get it. These people can't compete and that will be best for us all.

I would hate to see Olympic go. Certainly, a top tier book through and through.

with that bit of info my list would be

cris, pinny, wwts, wsex, grande definitly as Shrink suggests and I also think that Hollywood would be in for the long haul.

By mid baseball season the latest you'll lose 2 of the 4 advertisers you listed on this thread. They are lucky the Super Bowl went the way it did. New England & Over cover and they might be gone by now, lol. Bases will kill the new shops.

I used to be a firm believer in the consolidation process. This belief has somehow faded over the years. Egos ( for the good and bad ) tend to slow down and block consolidation. Not only that is slowing down the process though : previous mergers and acquisitions have left buyers and sellers dissatisfied with the outcomes. This factor is also contributing to slow down consolidation.

The only new element that could generate a true revolution, and immediate consolidation, within the industry would be legalization on U.S. soil. But I guess my son will turn 18 ( he is 1 now ) and we will all still be talking about this possibility.

I foresee larger books acquiring smaller operations, VIP style, in 2005, and "maybe" a couple of bigger mergers. There are some ambitions and informal talks out there in this respect.

I also don't see Spiro selling. He might say it from time to time, but he doesn't mean it. The man loves this business, he is addicted to it.

I'm also skeptical about newborn's failures. The operations Fish has mentioned are all well funded. Some may abandon their ambitions and close shop with no damage to players. Bases Season will tell.
