Whether it's on this forum or some other place, I'm always hearing about the Right Wing icons that seem to abound - there's Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Bill Bennet, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbuagh, and several others whose names elude me at the moment.

Now that Dan Rather's gone, who's out there representing the left wing?

I can think of just about all of the major networks, excluding Fox,and nearly all of the major urban newspapers with a few exceptions - but I can't think of any left wing individuals who might be considered to be opposites of the group I mentioned above.

Does anyone know a left wing commentator with the same name recognition that all of the right wingers have?

Nope, you've hit the nail on the head. The media is overwhelmingly conservative despite the common misconception that it is otherwise.

It started with AM radio...conservative christians have OWNED AM radio for a long time. It's smart politically. Then again, having millions follow your every word is kind of what some religions are all about.

Good one. Only Dane Cook could tell a worse joke than that.

Silly. Newsrooms are 70% Liberals.

Just because the Conservatives get the ratings, doesn't mean the media isn't overwhelmingly Liberal.

I'd agree only 10% or so would say they are Conservative, but there are some moderates in the bunch. 90% Liberal would be too high.

My guess as far a lack of liberal commentators goes is, the right wingers wouldn't listen to them so the stations won't receive high enough ratings. The Liberals will listen to the Right wing shock commentators because much like a car crash it is almost impossible to turn away.

Jinn - as usual you're way off of the mark!

The left has all of the large media outlets in their back pocket - all of the large newspapres and news organizations such as Reuters and API; they also have all of the major networks, CBS, NBC, CBS, MSNBC and CNN - Fox is the only major network that isn't completely in the left wing camp.

Of course, all of those left wing media outlets have marginalized themselves and have been losing audience share and sales for years.

What I don't see out there is a left wing answer to these commentators!

I think that there's aren't any left wing commentators out there because they can't hold and audience. I don't know if it's the agenda or the type of commentator that the left attracts, but they can't sell their product!

I personally believe that the radio commentators thrive because working people lsiten to them as they commute and sometimes as they work - while the left wing supporters are usually watching game shows and Oprah on TV at home as they wait for the first and fifteenth of the month to roll around -

Working people don't particularly care for the whining diatribe they get from the left wing while they tend to be in agreement and sympathetic to the right wing.

At work, I read the WSJ and the Boston Herald-American - both conservative leaning rags.
Although, years ago I used to know several people who read the NY Times, I haven't known anyone to read that paper for quite a few years.

The media double standard continues to be alive and well in the US - but it's getting old and starting to show a few wrinkles -

These names you've listed run the gamut from moderately loony to completely fucking nuts. Why would anyone on the left want to emulate them in any way (unless that have no integrity)?

You are kidding yourself if you don't think there are left-wing nuts.

The issue here is what a "commentator" is.....for the left there are many.Politcal analysts no....but Hollywood celebs (ie Sean Penn) and music icons (ie Green Day) aplenty. All you need to be is famous and apparently youre qualified to judge the government on all things politcal. Not just limited to news bites either....where'd Al Franken come from??? How about Bill Maher.....Jon Stewart????

Big difference between polical analyst and "commentator" IMO.

Yer having a laff BB.

This "lefty media" mlarkey is a smokescreen, a ghost.

I'm still waiting for anyone from the right to tell us all why this "lefty media" never asked Bush one simple question.

"Mr President !
What is the connection between Saddam Hussein and 9/11 ?"

It seems that for 3 YEARS the entire US media "forgot" to ask...
(until that poll came out that made Americans look daft because 70% of you thought Saddam was behind 9/11 )

Dubya made it clear after 9/11 that the US would make no distinction between the terrorists and those that harbored terrorists. Dubya just doesn't put up with the evildoers.
