This is the $64 Trillion question-I have asked many times?

Dante--That Program Avast. I tried it and something must be wrong. It scanned 65000 files plus and was still running. When I do a complete scan with Mcafee there is only 18000. Avast was still running after 30 minutes. I don't know what to think of that--Seems complicated to me.

..it found 6 other viruses that AVG did not find...it is very complete in its scanning
.. you can adjust how deep you want it to scan also...good stuff.

I have been told that even a re-format does not erase your hard drive. I have also been told that a very strong magnet will do the trick in erasing and ruining the hard drive. I dunno.

Dante, I need you to read about character ethics and personality ethics and write me a one page summary, explaining the 2 principles.

I've had to manually destroy hard drives before...

you can use a degaussing wand or ring and that will pretty much do the trick.

The other option is to overwrite the data enough times so that it becomes unrecoverable.

The other option would be to somehow physically grind the hard drive down ...but that's still not 100% guaranteed.

Government agencies use the overwrite method. Fire doesn't work. I know this isn't the point of the thread but I just thought I'd chime in with some useless 411 :D

I believe a magnaflux machine could ruin the data. Surely a 6k shock would rid any data.

As our name suggests, "Character" is the cornerstone of all Character Training International's programs. CTI believes that building good character lays the foundation needed for good ethical choices. The goal of every employer is to have employees make good ethical choices on their own. You shouldn't have to scare and micro-manage workers to get them to follow the rules. Taking time to ask tough questions about character and to get people thinking inwardly is the first step in making ethical compliance an intrinsic response.

I think there's probably several different ways to effectively destroy data. You could probably come up with some pretty creative ways too.

I've always read that the government overwrites the data but fact of the matter is I'm sure they have some sophisticated 18 million dollar machine that does nothing but destroy data.

General, viruses aren't "deleted" they are simply written over or a critical companant to the virus is removed and renamed...

There are ways to write over so your hard drive is not recoverable, Windowwasher has such a option.. BUT, BE VERY CAREFULL WITH WINDOWASHER I have had to formatt 3-4 times before I figured out that windowwasher was deleting my Himem file, which is MAJOR!:guillotin

I get alot of attempted virus intrusions every day (min 15). I have been ok so far. Running multiple firewalls and Nortin has proven affective.

I don't like any 3rd party software, but some are needed.
