McCain: I would say 100 years, but it's not like he's going to be around for that long.

Obama: About a year.

Probably an insignificant difference. When Iraq is stable, and it looks like we're there, the next President will not be allowed to maintain a large presence in Iraq.

Neither the Americans nor the Iraqis will tolerate it.

Not during my lifetime. They wrecked the balance of power in the ME when they destroyed Saddam so now we have to serve that function.

As who will make the best decisions from here on my money is on the one with enough brainpower to oppose this war from the start. Not the one who took 14 junkets over there to act like Gorge Patton and approved of every move Dubya made.

for those who say "never out fully" what makes you think Obama will not pull all of the troops out?

for those who say McCain will have us out (for the most part) soon do you have any source?

No one knows not even the candidates.

The best you can do is look at what they have said and done over the span of this war and go with the one that has shown the best judgement.

uno, nobody has an absolute definitive position, so we try to read the tea leafs.

I think the talk out of Iraq and the attitudes of the American public support my position.

Funny how no one cares about Iraq anymore. All it took was the socialization of the US financial system.

someone has to have an article or something that supports their position.

as far as no one caring about the war in iraq anymore it looks like the people in this forum and in this thread are equally guilty.

i will stop caring when our boys stop dying.

On July 7, Iraq’s prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, told Arab leaders in Abu Dhabi that his government was “…looking at the necessity of terminating the foreign presence on Iraqi lands and restoring full sovereignty.” His words were driven by shifting domestic politics that demand the pending US troop deal have a withdrawal timetable.

America’s continued presence in Iraq is a hot political issue for Maliki who hopes to remain in power, perhaps by restoring at least the appearance of Iraqi sovereignty. With provincial elections scheduled for this October, it’s possible that disenfranchised Iraqis, particularly minority Sunnis, will join the political process and grab power from the ruling Shia. That possibility has compelled Maliki to assert his leadership and get tough with Washington.

"John McCain has always been clear that American forces operate in Iraq only with the consent of that country's democratically elected government," Michael Goldfarb, a McCain spokesman, told the Huffington Post. "The Senator speaks frequently with Iraq's leaders and they have made clear that they share his belief that any timeline for withdrawal must be dictated by the facts on the ground. He met with the foreign minister and President separately within the last month...He met with Maliki on his last trip to Iraq sometime in late March."

Do I need to post links proving Americans want out of Iraq ASAP?

To do otherwise would be political suicide for the next President.
