Maybe your sports beeper wasn't working,

Maybe the ESPN or ESPN2 ticker decided to skip over your game,

Maybe you were driving in your car or out with the family and didn't have your usual methods to find out scores,

Maybe the score phone you called had the score in like the 3rd quarter when it should have been over already,

Maybe you even called your book and they still didn't have the game graded yet.

Anyone have any good stories to share?

While coaching a high school track team at a university campus, ran across street to a dorm and checked score of a baseball game.

Then ended up hanging with the coed girls for an hour.

Back in the early 70's before scorephone even, you had to rely on TV, radio, or the newspaper the next day for scores. In my home town, we had a good sized hill, (Bear Hill) late at night you could drive to the top, and get out of town ballgames from all over the country, on a car radio. I have actually sat in my car, on top of Bear Hill at midnight, to find out how a particular ballgame ended. I must have been nuts.

Gentlemen..

My story starts in the fall 0f 1975..My buddies and I bet a Columbia hoops game..My friend at the time lived next door to the starting guard of the Lions..He said they were a lock-7..We take the plunge..

Then there was no ESPN..The game was on the radio..AM..We were driving all over the west side for reception..It was like a bad cell fone..We were freaking..We ended up taking a elevator to the top of a tall building where we had decent reception..We won..Our jubilation was incredibe..We screamed and rejoiced..Then the door to the roof opened and 2 cops entered..They wanted to arrest us for tresspassing..

We talked ourselves out of it, and the memory is forever with us..

Fish - Sox games were usually on TV, or local radio, which I could get at home. To get a score from a Dodger home game for example, you had to drive up the hill into dark woods, and find the game somewhere on the radio. I can also remember needing race results. and doing the same thing to catch a radio program that gave that days results at Suffolk Downs. I spent a lot of time on that hill.

I called a guy who I hadn't spoken to in years to find out the score of the jets giants game played earlier this season.

I had laid -2.5 with the giants and taken +3.5 with the jets and the game was in overtime when I had to leave the house to attend a function.

I had tried several people and no one was around, but still had this guy in my cellphone directory.

I made a bit of small talk then asked him if he was watching any football, I told him I was a big jets fan and to check the score for me.

The game was on local tv and he said the giants just kicked a field goal to win 31-28.
