Know each case and preventive measures probably varies, but what general range does a sportsbook have to invest to prevent future DOS attacks 60,80,90, or 100% of time?
This is a thread from a "tech" friend of mine in the business here in Costa Rica. THe shop he is with was down for a week before they installed a DOS ATTACK FILTER on the outside of their pipe.
STRUT888/FISHHEAD - The good hardware to prevent these attack will cost you about $30,000+ and once in place you have protection against most future attacks, but you will still need to be on-the-ball and have a good Internet Security team on your staff that can tweak things inb case they try different things.
You can set up a viable workaround for DDOS attacks in about three days for a fraction of what the filters cost. Books just aren't looking for solutions where they should be, or more importantly when they should be -- once your site is down is no time to be shopping for protection; that's like comparing condom brands the morning after.
If a DOS attack is distributed, it can easily amount to 1 gig of traffic directed at your site.
For a book to accept and filter this traffic (1 gig) themselves would cost a lot in terms of hardware and bandwidth.
So filtering from large DOS/DDOS attacks need to happen “high up” where bandwidth will not be a constraint and cause a DOS.
Part of the solution may be to ensue your ISP or hosting centre has some method of protecting you from masses of DOS/DDOS traffic.
But some DOS/DDOS traffic get through ISP filters and a book also needs filtering and protection locally.
Costs can vary from insignificant to six figures for clustered hardware at the end of a high capacity pipe. With the exact costs often largely dependant on the volume of traffic you believe you need to protect yourself from directly.
