One trait liberals seem to possess is the idea that government is the best candidate to take care of most of our lives.

Hi, Roxy:

A classical liberal (the true definition) is closest to the American libertarian ideology. They believe in broad social and civil liberties, primarily, and minimal government. They believe in free markets (true free markets, not our nations' fake free market ideology via NAFTA and other assorted bend-overs) and minimal interference from gov't in capital affairs. They differ from other ideologies mainly on social issues. A true liberal would support same-sex marriage and oppose affirmative action.

The modern definition of liberal, in the American context, is more social democrat (not to be confused with the party, but the ideology) and believes in broader social programs by gov't to protect minority rights.

In contrast, modern conservatives do not differ with modern liberals in their views on statism or the expansion of gov't, they differ only on the specific ends ... health care vs. militarism, for example. They now differ largely on the rights of the individual. In the US, at least.

One thing oft overlooked by current opponents to liberalism: were it not for this ideology, y'all would still be English. Conservatives aren't exactly big on change. :)

Unlike todays liberals they were willing to pay for it,freedom means responsibility, not paying for it in some shape or form with goverments money.Which they think grows on the "goverment tree".When there is no such thing as "goverments money" in the first place.
Liberals like "change" like fixing things thats not broke. They are famous for "fixing" things beyond repair.

Where to start with you ... ??

"freedom means responsibility"

To whom, exactly? Your new conservatism has the individual responsible to the state. Your new liberals have the state responsible for the individual. Neither one is truly 'American.'

As for gov't spending, your biggest expenditure is the military industrial complex. That's a conservative love, not a liberal one. What is the military protecting, exactly? Your ass? Not likely. Try minority wealth, and by "minority" I don't mean black ghetto kids.

How about I pour gasoline on the fire early today since I didn't get enough sleep and say.............
:puke1: HILLARY CLINTONESQUE LIBERALS SUCK!

I agree widely with libertarians and somewhat moderate Republicans. I also agree with Democrats on some issues such as environmental issues. The people on the extreme side of either liberals or conservatives are selfish and unrealistic. www.lp.org

:puke1: RUSH LIMBAUGHESQUE CONSERVATIVES SUCK!

The whole liberal/conservative debate is a huge cartoon, for most of us are somewhat in between. However, the media places these silly labels on us.

What makes it all so interesting is that we are free to choose and even change our ideas. Only a fool keeps the same ideology when made aware of certain facts.

However, as I stated we are all free to choose.....until the Patriot Act is fully implemented.

I think it's funny how Dems are called Liberals and Repubs called Conservatives, then the debates are so easily pigeon-holed into two ideological/partisan camps rather than a take on the direct issues. You guys need a viable third party in the worst way. For one, 90% of Dem and Repub viewpoints are virtually identical.

The Al Frankens and Ann Coulters aren't much help, either.

DWD: with you on Toronto NBA today. So they'll probably lose. March Madness was very good to me, been downhill ever since.

Panda, we have one, but most view this as a 'wasted' vote. www.lp.org

They would rather 'waste' their votes on Democrats and/or Republicans who continue to waste our money and pit us further against each other.

Roxy, you sure have started an interesting thread, but I'm still in doubt anyone has accurately defined liberals.

Roxy, this doesn't define but maybe helps understand. Canadians are deemed to be more liberal than most Americans.

The gay marriage issue is a no issue in Canada. Also, Canada has national healthcare. Immigration is more widely accepted. I doubt anyone is riding around with a shotgun in their pickup window and/or carrying Saturday night specials to rob the corner liquor store. Canada seems to give great care to the environment. Canadians are less religious than Americans.

Canada also doesn't have to spend much on a military, since they have the 500lb gorilla as a friendly neighbor. However, if they keep bickering over trade that could easily change.

I spent some time in Vancouver, BC last summer and it was much more like Europe than America. Also, spent many a night in Ottawa when in the Army and we used to walk around the inner city after bar closing and never had a fear of being mugged or harmed. Try doing that in any big city in America on a regular basis.

Everyone enjoy this fine morning. :toast:

Personal responsibility...not victim nation..it shouldn't be goverments paying for everybodys personal fxck ups...freedom to abuse drugs...fine you pay...free love fine ...you pay for the std's and aids...no goverment clap shacks.....etc. etc...real freedom means you get nothin for nothin....I'm all for it.

Liberals seem to think there is no price to pay for their social engineering.

Agree 100%.
