What hat will Greg Maddux wear when he goes to the HOF?

I asked this question last season and almost by a land slide most people said Maddux would go to the Hall of Fame wearing a Braves hat.

I think this proposition is getting really close to 50/50, with a slight lean towards the Braves.

He started his career with the CUBS. If Maddux would have started with any other team then went to the Braves then to the Cubs it would be a slam dunk for the Braves.

But since he signed with the CUBS a team he already played for before going to the Braves, it makes this discusion very interesting.

He had alot of success pre-Braves with the cubs before his great run in ATLANTA. He won a CY Young award with the Cubs in the early 90s and was regarded by many even then as the best pitcher in baseball before throwing his first pitch with the Braves. This not like RANDY JOHNSON comming up with the Expos kind of deal. Maddux was greatly successful pre-Braves.

Now he resigns with the Cubs, has 2 decent season and now is on his way to perhaps a great season. Maybe even a Cy Young type of year. If he wins the Cy Young this year and pitches another 2 or 3 decent years with the Cubs, and God forbid they ever win a World Series in Chicago in the next 2 or 3 seasons, the Braves may lose a HOFer to the CUBS.

Any thoughts?

112 Cubs wins
210 Braves wins

Nahh, Braves for sure unless Maddux pitches another 3+ years and wins a WS with the Cubs.

I think you can easily add another 40 wins to the CUBS ledger. That would make it 210 to 152.

Cubs, bump this in 7-8 years. Before I read anything that is what I thought.

1% shot Las Vegas Marlins.

Cubs as much as I hate to admit it unless he goes anywhere else. Starts and ends his career in Chicago, think he'll wear their cap.

Well I sure hope you're right, but he isn't signed past this year. We'll see. 40 more wins and a ring and then there's a good argument. :thumbsup2:

He most likely won't have a say

Who decides the cap on the plaque?

See "Players with multiple teams" in the "Controversies" section. The cap is only for visual purposes; all teams are listed on the plaque and the Hall does not officially induct players "as a (team name)" player. When the Hall does statistical breakdowns of inductees by team, Wade Boggs, for instance, is credited to the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Devil Rays, though his plaque has a Sox cap.

Players with multiple teams

The Hall has also recently changed its stance regarding team membership. Although all the teams a player played for are included in the text of the plaque, they are pictured wearing a cap of one team. Before free agency, this was not controversial, since many players played their entire career with one team. As free agents began to be inducted, it was the player's choice as to which cap they wanted to wear. However, in light of rumors that teams were offering number retirement, money or organizational jobs in exchange for the cap designation (Dave Winfield was widely rumored to have cut such a deal in 2001 with the San Diego Padres), the Hall decided that, though the decision-making process would be a mutual responsibility, they would have the final say in such matters. Gary Carter was the first to test this policy. He won his only championship with the New York Mets, and wanted his induction plaque to depict him wearing a Met cap. The Hall of Fame decided that his plaque would show Carter with a Montreal Expos cap. Wade Boggs was in a similar situation; he won his only championship as a member of the 1996 New York Yankees, but posted his best career numbers in twice as much time while wearing the Boston Red Sox uniform. He went in wearing the "B" on his cap despite his acrimonious relationship with Sox management. Catfish Hunter, though harboring no ill will towards either of his employers, the Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees, could not decide which cap he preferred: he had nearly identical statistics and postseason success on both teams. He instead went in wearing a cap without a logo.

Same can be asked for Roger Clemens. Boston? NYY? Houston? Or Toronto? I think we can rule out the last two.

Only way he goes to the Hall as a Cub is if he starts for 2 cubs world series championship teams. That is...unless he can go in as both teams.

Has there been a similar situation?

Gary Carter was somewhat similar. Spent his best years in obscurity in Montreal, but then had a couple huge years and won a Series in his 5-yr term with the Mets. He was on the fence for a while as to which hat he'd wear, but decided to go with the 'spos.
