LA Times and Chicago Tribune endorse Obama.

1st time in each paper's history they've endorsed a Democratic candidate for POTUS

It is inherent in the American character to aspire to greatness, so it can be disorienting when the nation stumbles or loses confidence in bedrock principles or institutions. That's where the United States is as it prepares to select a new president: We have seen the government take a stake in venerable private financial houses; we have witnessed eight years of executive branch power grabs and erosion of civil liberties; we are still recovering from a murderous attack by terrorists on our own soil and still struggling with how best to prevent a recurrence.

We need a leader who demonstrates thoughtful calm and grace under pressure, one not prone to volatile gesture or capricious pronouncement. We need a leader well-grounded in the intellectual and legal foundations of American freedom. Yet we ask that the same person also possess the spark and passion to inspire the best within us: creativity, generosity and a fierce defense of justice and liberty.

The Times without hesitation endorses Barack Obama for president.

Our nation has never before had a candidate like Obama, a man born in the 1960s, of black African and white heritage, raised and educated abroad as well as in the United States, and bringing with him a personal narrative that encompasses much of the American story but that, until now, has been reflected in little of its elected leadership. The excitement of Obama's early campaign was amplified by that newness. But as the presidential race draws to its conclusion, it is Obama's character and temperament that come to the fore. It is his steadiness. His maturity.

The Republican Party, the party of limited government, has lost its way. The government ran a $237 billion surplus in 2000, the year before Bush took office -- and recorded a $455 billion deficit in 2008. The Republicans lost control of the U.S. House and Senate in 2006 because, as we said at the time, they gave the nation rampant spending and Capitol Hill corruption. They abandoned their principles. They paid the price.

We might have counted on John McCain to correct his party's course. We like McCain. We endorsed him in the Republican primary in Illinois. In part because of his persuasion and resolve, the U.S. stands to win an unconditional victory in Iraq.

It is, though, hard to figure John McCain these days. He argued that President Bush's tax cuts were fiscally irresponsible, but he now supports them. He promises a balanced budget by the end of his first term, but his tax cut plan would add an estimated $4.2 trillion in debt over 10 years. He has responded to the economic crisis with an angry, populist message and a misguided, $300 billion proposal to buy up bad mortgages.

McCain failed in his most important executive decision. Give him credit for choosing a female running mate--but he passed up any number of supremely qualified Republican women who could have served. Having called Obama not ready to lead, McCain chose Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. His campaign has tried to stage-manage Palin's exposure to the public. But it's clear she is not prepared to step in at a moment's notice and serve as president. McCain put his campaign before his country.

well??? they are owned and published by the same company...so it would be kinda silly for them to have opposing views...

you think these other papers will do the same?

The Tribune Company is a large American multimedia corporation based in Chicago, Illinois. It is the nation's second-largest newspaper publisher, responsible for the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Newsday, Hartford Courant, Orlando Sentinel, and the Baltimore Sun, among others. Through other subsidiaries, the Tribune Company also owns Tribune Broadcasting, Tribune Entertainment, Tribune Media Services, and the Chicago Cubs baseball team.

Not sure of your argument here. The LA Times hasn't endorsed ANYONE since like 1972.

The Trib is totally a repug publication, definitely GOP. The Times ain't no lib paper either.

Different editorial boards. The two of them are in capitulation mode. You guys need to move past Stage 1-2 of denial.

Lol just an interesting fact about the Titanic. Many people don't know that when the Titanic took off for sail it was on fire. The place where the coal was kept caught fire but they could not stop the trip. sorry

have no argument...just stating that newspapers with the same publisher and owner should not be expected to endorse different candidates...If one of the others that are OWNED by this same company break rank,i guess i missed something...

as far as the Times not being LIB some believe that is why the newspaper has lost (let's see if i can do this right) a quarter of a million subscribers over the years (quarter of a million sounds so much better that 250,000 doesn't it?)

"The Los Angeles Times paid circulation figures have decreased since the mid-1990s. It has recently been unable to pass the one million mark, a milestone easily surpassed in earlier decades. Some believe the circulation drop was a result of a liberal bias attributed to the paper, which alienated many readers"

what am i in denial about?

The winnah? Landslide for the Blue team?

La Times has been owned by the Trib since 2000....so if your logic holds water, then how cum they didn't endorse Dubya?

If the Trib did, why didn't they? Same owner.

Just don't subscribe to your "if they=always follow lockstep" logic

I think you did miss something.

The statement of FACT is that it's the first time that both newspapers have endorsed the Dem candidate. That's not equivalent to saying it's the first time they've endorsed the same candidate.

that would be correct, however Mr.Zell became new owner of both papers in 2007..

as for me i am waiting to see who my newspaper endorses and that is who i will vote for..

just as the people of Chicago and LA must have waited for also.. judging by the importance of this announcement...i guess it surprised a lot of people when the Chicago newspaper endorsed someone that has done so much for the community of Chicago...Adlai Stevenson couldn't even get their endorsement back in 52' or 56'...guess he didn't do enough for the community...

well times have changed and one of the newspapers you mention has not even endorsed anyone in 36 years...

so now all those people that have been waiting for the newspaper to let them know who they are voting for can go and vote now...

as for me? as stated above...i will wait and see what my newspaper says before i make up my mind...
