From the Las Vegas Advisor Lite newsletter:
No Drinks for VP at MBay
Here's a shocker: Mandalay Bay is no longer comping drinks for machine players at its bars. After hearing about the new policy, we went down to check it out and, sure enough, no comps anywhere. We went next door to Luxor and comps were still secure, so it looks like a MBay-only thing.
This is big news, as it flies in the face of one of Las Vegas' longest-running gambling traditions: Play a roll of quarters, get a comped drink. From a mathematical standpoint, it's easy to see why they've done it -- the VP-for-a-drink play is one of the most liberal comps available (see explanation at www.lasvegasadvisor.com/freedrink.cfm ) -- but it's just too entrenched to change now. The same move was made several years ago by MGM Grand, and was quickly reversed when customers deserted the MGM bars. There was no business in the MBay bars either when we checked, where it will now cost you $4.50 minimum (for a Budweiser) -- if you choose to give it to them
