Lost on Boise St yesterday but looking to change things around tonigh. Here are tonights and tommarrows selections.
5 Units Oregon State -2 -107
New Mexico is on a return engagement to the Las Vegas Bowl having lost to UCLA a year ago 27-13 as a 10-point dog. The run-oriented Lobos feature DonTrell Moore who scored 19 touchdowns while rushing for 1,438 yards and an average 5.4 per carry and a defense which allowed just 93 yds rushing pg. New Mexico closed its regular season on a three game winning streak with a 26-3 Mountain West Conference victory over Wyoming as Moore rushed for 153 yards on 25 carries and DD Cox added 127 yards. The Lobos run defense has peaked during their last 7 games as they gave up only 77 yds rushing pg. Oregon State lost to Pittsburgh a year ago 38-13 in the Insight Bowl. Just like his team, quarterback Derek Anderson had an up and down year. He only completed 50% of his passes and was intercepted more often (23 INTs) than he threw for scores (22). Against USC in the 52-28 loss, Anderson completed 34-of-60 passes for 485 yards but threw four interceptions. The leading rusher was Steven Jackson, who compiled 1,395 yards (an average of 4.3 pc). New Mexico played a pair of ranked teams, Washington State (23-10 loss) and Texas Tech, losing 42-28. Oregon State played a tough Pac-10 schedule and survived.
5 Units Houston U +10.5 -102
Houston has no defense and a devastating offense led by freshman QB Kevin Kolb and WR Brandon Middleton, while Hawaii throws just about every down and averages 34 points per game. The Houston Cougars (7-5 SU) have a terrific offense that averages 220 yards rushing and 233 yards passing per game!!! They tally 33.3 points per game under first-year coach Art Briles. They have three great players on this offense in QB Kolb (2,771 yds, 61%, 23 TDs, 4 INTs), Middleton (1,225 receiving yards, 14 TDs) and RB Anthony Evans (1,083 yards). But this defense is awful, giving up 34 points per game. They faced several good passing teams and gave up 50 to Michigan, 42 to Tulane, 45 to Memphis, 62 to TCU, and 66 to Louisville!!! Hawaii (8-5) will attack that poor defense with a devastating passing offense that averages 33 points and 374 yards in the air each game!!! Coach June Jones runs a wide-open offense and he has two QBs in Jason Whieldon (12 TDs, 6 INTs, 1,079 yds) and Timmy Chang (24 TDs, 19 INTs, 3,724 yds). Hawaii is home here, where they went 6-1 SU & 3-3 ATS outscoring teams by a 41-26 average. Houston, too, can take advantage of that poor defense and keep it close in a high scoring game. Hawaii gave up 45 to Boise and 41 to La-Tech, and Houston has a similar potent passing offense!!!
