Today's Analysis


Prior to this season the last time Clay Holmes started a game was in his first year in the big leagues back in 2018. Credit the Mets - and the 32-year-old right-hander - the veteran reliever's transformation into a key part of the team's rotation.


But as Holmes' innings have increased (his total of 147 has already doubled his career high of 70 set back in 2021), so has his ERA, climbing from 2.93 in June, to 4.91 in July, and 4.32 in August. And his first outing in September, last Wednesday's loss at Detroit, matched his second shortest of the season as he departed after 4.2 innings and 85 pitches (5 H, 3 R, 3 BB).


Despite placing two starters on the injured list, shortstop Trea Turner and third baseman Alex Bohm, the Phillies have captured the first two games in this series, 1-0 and 9-3, to improve to 9-3 since being swept in a three-game set at Citi Field at the end of August.


Philadelphia was trounced in the first game of that aforementioned series, 13-3, with Cristopher Sanchez struggling through his worst start (5.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 BB) of the season. He also dropped a road decision to the Mets on April 22 when he departed after two innings because of forearm soreness. But now he's back home, and the Phillies are 25-3 in the left-hander's last 28 starts at Citizens Bank Park where he is personally 5-0 with a 2.28 ERA in a dozen outings this season.


The Mets enter the day losers of four straight, a stretch where they've plated only eight runs.
