KEY STAT: The two teams have scored 16 goals between them in their six European ties

EXPERT VERDICT: The spectre of Celtic’s poor European away form came back to haunt them in the first leg of this Champions League qualifying tie against Legia Warsaw, as the Bhoys were humbled 4-1 in Poland. Now Ronny Deila’s men have a mountain to climb and with Celtic desperate for goals and Legia deadly on the counter, expect plenty of goalmouth action.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: St Johnstone scored just 13 league away goals last term

EXPERT VERDICT: Slovakia’s Spartak Trnava are unbeaten in five Europa League outings, keeping three clean sheets, and they’re 2-1 up after the away leg of this tie. St Johnstone, who have conceded in all three European fixtures this summer and lost ten of their 19 away Premiership away games last season, could suffer on the road once more.

RECOMMENDATION: Spartak Trvana to win 1-0

KEY STAT: The English top flight is more than 70 Uefa coefficient points stronger than Slovakia’s

EXPERT VERDICT: After securing a 0-0 draw in the first leg, Hull have done most of the hard work against Trencin and should be able to finish the job on home soil. Hull were solid at the KC Stadium last season, conceding just 21 goals in 19 games, and everything points to the home win that will send the Tigers through to the playoffs.

RECOMMENDATION: Hull to win 2-0

KEY STAT: Sociedad conceded 36 away league goals last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Aberdeen have plenty of work to do after losing the first leg 2-0 in Spain last Thursday, but that was the only defeat the Dons have suffered in five Europa League outings this term. This inexperienced Real Sociedad outfit conceded more goals on the road than any other top-half team in La Liga last season and Aberdeen can land a shock win.

KEY STAT: Blackburn have won five of their last seven league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Cardiff will be eager to make their stay in the Championship a brief one after last term’s relegation, but a trip to Ewood Park looks a tough opening assignment. Blackburn were just two points away from the final playoff berth after a 12-match unbeaten run and Jordan Rhodes' quality in front of goal could prove the difference.

KEY STAT: Bristol City drew 19 times in League One last term

EXPERT VERDICT: Sheffield United won both games against Bristol City last season but this looks likely to be a tighter affair between two of League One's fancied teams. Both sides have recruited heavily in a bid to secure a return to the second tier and with early season nerves playing their part, it may end up all-square.

At the Gate - Wednesday
By Mike Dempsey

We will be at the halfway point of the 40-day Saratoga meeting on Sunday and we are starting to see the trainer and jockey standings shake out about as I expected.

Trainer Chad Brown, who finished second to Todd Pletcher the last two summers at the Spa got off to a very slow start at the meeting, but has picked things up and now has seven winners from 35 starters, now hitting at a 20% clip.

Brown is tied with Graham Motion for second behind Pletcher, who has won 15 races from his 51 starters, with 10 seconds and six thirds. He leads in purse earnings with $1,232,259.

David Jacobson got off to a slow start, but picked up winner on Monday’s card and now has two winners from his 28 starters. Rudy Rodriguez had another winner on Monday with first timer Condo Commando ($26.20) and now has four winners from 33 starters.

Chilly barns include Dominic Schettino (0 for 19), Mark Hennig (1 for 19), Steve Asmussen (1 for 18), and Kiaran McLaughin (1 for 14).

Wesley Ward has won with 3 of 21 starters, but I discovered an interesting statistic. Ward has hit with just one of his last 39 juveniles at the Spa dating back a couple of years.

Javier Castellano has won 22 races and leads all jockeys, five ahead of John Velazquez. Irad Ortiz Jr. leads in purse earnings with $1,757,433 and is third in wins with 15, one ahead of his brother Jose.

Taylor Rice is really struggling, having won just one race from her 44 mounts, while Julian Leparoux has been chilly as well, with just two winners from 45 mounts. Corey Lanerie has been riding for the cold Jacobson barn and has won just three races from his 47 mounts.

Among the jockeys without a win at the meeting are Dylan Davis (0 for 20), and Edgar Prado (0 for 17).

Wednesday’s feature is a good one, the $100,000 John’s Call at 1 5/8 miles on the turf. Ten entered but Alpha is main track only and Micromanage will likely scratch to go in tomorrow’s $100,000 Birdstone, so we likely will have a field of eight go to the gate.

The Pletcher trained Winning Cause is going to be lower than his 2-1 morning line and is coming off a fourth in the United Nations (G1). Tricky Hat tossed in a clunker last out in the Monmouth (G2) but I am expecting a better effort out of him this afternoon.

To purchase my full card report for Saratoga for Wednesday click here.

Here is today’s second race (the opener is a steeplechase race) from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 2 Md $20,000 (1:00 ET)
4 Boss Daddy 12-1
7 Yankee Dime 5-1
5 Moonluck 3-5
8 Hey Kid 10-1

Analysis: Boss Daddy makes his debut for the Carroll barn that is 12% winners with first timers. The colt is by Distorted Humor (16% winners with debut runners) out of the graded stakes winner Hello Lucky ($315,565) who has dropped a couple of foals to race but no winners to date. The colt has a couple of good-looking local drills including a gate drill. The colt debuts with lasix and this looks like a good spot here tagged for $20,000.

Yankee Dime takes another drop in class after coming off the bench for $75,000 last out at Belmont Park and weakened to finish third. The gelding battled for the early lead and weakened in the stretch over a racing strip that was not kind to inside speed that day. He ran in a couple of tough maiden races last year including running into Cairo Prince in his second career start. He owns the edge in early and mid pace numbers and will be the one to catch.

Moonluck ran well in a couple of seconds last year. He ran second to Bakken last October at Belmont Park, that foe ran second in the True North Handicap (G2) in his most recent outing. The 3-5 morning line sure looks short while the jam in for $20,000 does not look good either. His recent works did not impress at least one morning clocker.

Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 5-1 or better.
EX: 4,7 / 4,5,7,8
TRI: 4,7 / 4,5,7,8 / 2,4,5,7,8

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 The John's Call (4:49 ET)
1 Tricky Hat 5-1
8 Winning Cause 2-1
10 Holiday Star 6-1
7 Manchurian High 20-1

Analysis: Tricky Hat tossed in a real bad one last out in the Monmouth (G2), getting outrun in the early going and never picking his feet up in a 14th place finish at 7-1. Four runners have come out of that race to win next out including runner up Hangover Kid, who won the Bowling Green (G2) on July 12 at Belmont Park and sixth place finisher Finnegan's Lake, who won the Arlington Handicap (G3) in his next outing on July 12.

Last fall our top pick won the Laurel Turf Cup at 1 1/2 miles, and then was a decent third in the Sycamore (G3) which was off the turf and contested on poly. His return race this spring was solid against allowance foes where he was beaten a neck by Boisterous off a 5 1/2 month layoff. That runner is a Grade 1 winner that has earned $1.4 million. Next up in the Elkhorn (G2) he did not show much punch in the stretch in a fifth place finish but was only beaten 4 3/4 lengths. The runner up in that race was War Dancer who came back to win the Louisville Handicap (G3) and then ran a close up third in the Arlington Handicap.

Shug brings him back here off a two month freshening and he gets some class relief facing non-winners of a graded stake in 2014. He is reunited with Rosie and figures to bounce back with a better effort.

Winning Cause also gets some class relief after a decent effort in a fourth in the United Nations (G1) at Monmouth Park. The colt came with a mild late run splitting rivals, beaten 1 1/4 lengths in the 1 3/8 miles race. His lone career win on grass was over the Spa turf in the restricted Sir Cat last summer going a mile.

The extra ground is a question mark but he has a decent enough pedigree, by Giant's Causeway out of a Kingmambo mare. He gets Johnny V. back who has been on board this guy a few timer and is a logical player here for the hot Pletcher barn, but the price may end up on the light side.

Holiday Star made a good late run to finish third in the Cape Henelopen last out at Delaware Park going 1 1/2 miles. The gelding is two for eight on turf in his career, the wins coming in Florida where he broke his maiden at Tampa Bay Downs and beat Alw-1 foes at Gulfstream Park.

He is getting a few pounds from our top two picks and has strong connections in his corner with Graham Motion who is having a strong meeting (7 for 27) with five of his wins coming on the turf. The gelding appears to be heading in the right direction and has a decent enough pedigree to be able to handle the extra ground. He is by Harlan's Holiday out of a Deputy Minster mare.

Wagering
WIN: #1 to win at 4-1 or better.
EX: 1,8 / 1,7,8,10
TRI: 1,8 / 1,7,8,10 / 1,3,7,8,10

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R1: #4 Lillehammer 12-1

R2: #4 Boss Daddy 12-1
R2: #8 Hey Kid 10-1

Good luck today!

# 2 SEEK YE FIRST 8/1

I've got to go with JAMBONIED. I like the jockey on this gelding - formidable chance to win the affair. CONCORDE'S PEACE - This gelding has some longshot angles I like to wager on. With a nice class figure average of 99, has one of the most competitive class advantages in this field.

# 3 MY T QUICK 9/5

# 2 WIN PHOTOS WILL DO 5/1

# 4 TWO BUCKS TO WIN 7/2

MY T QUICK is my choice. Ought to be carefully examined - I like the figures from the last affair. Displays the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 77 speed figure which is one of the top in this field. Strong pick to take this race going in a dirt route. WIN PHOTOS WILL DO - Reliable average Equibase Speed Figs in dirt route races make this horse a definite contender. Has strong early pace and should fare well versus this field. TWO BUCKS TO WIN - Has been running very well and has among the top speed in the race for today's distance. Has strong early lick and will probably fare solidly against this field.

#2 KNAVE DO WELL (ML=8/5)
#6 UNLIMITED (ML=8/1)

KNAVE DO WELL - When this jockey and trainer partner up you have to take a look. Rosario and Ashauer have been great together. Have to like the early speed on this one. No one else may even be close. This animal is at the top in earnings per race entered. He looks good in today's race. UNLIMITED - It looks like Camaque had to become familiar with this gelding on July 23rd when riding him for the initial time. Back on board again today. Cacho brings him back again. I recommend you stay with this strong gelding.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 EL TIEMPO BANDIDO (ML=3/1), #1A OCTIBBEHA WARRIOR (ML=3/1), #7 NO MARBLES (ML=6/1),

EL TIEMPO BANDIDO - I find it hard to bet on any horse in a sprint affair at 3/1 when he hasn't shown any positive results in sprints in the last sixty days. OCTIBBEHA WARRIOR - The speed rating last race out doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's contest. Mark this horse as a questionable challenger. NO MARBLES - Difficult to play this mount today. Make him show you something in a short distance race before you play him in a race of 6 furlongs. When looking at today's class figure, he will have to register a better speed rating than last time out to vie in this dirt sprint.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - KNAVE DO WELL - This is an automatic bet for me. This gelding is the top TM Power-rated horse and his rating towers over the rest.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Putting our cash on #2 KNAVE DO WELL to win. Have to have odds of at least 7/5 or better though

#3 RED DART (ML=8/1)
#4 VANNA K (ML=9/2)

RED DART - Filly was in versus 'open company' on July 16th and should find this group easier to deal with. Looking at today's class rating, this pony is encountering an easier group than last out at Mountaineer. This filly earned a good rating of 75 in her last contest. That speed figure should be strong enough to win today. VANNA K - This filly likes to be near the lead. Today's event is a shorter distance and should increase her chances of winning. This horse is at the top of my list of top contenders. Her speed, along with a favorable post on this bullring, should take her far in this one.

Vulnerable Contenders: #9 RUBY RED ROCKET (ML=3/1), #8 WHAT APPEAL (ML=7/2), #1 J J'S DEPUTY (ML=6/1),

RUBY RED ROCKET - No accomplishments for this steed in a short distance event over the last couple months tells me that this filly is in a very difficult spot WHAT APPEAL - This equine doesn't have a champion's temperament. Often finishes second or third. Finished third in her most recent race with a disappointing speed rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this field. J J'S DEPUTY - No success for this questionable contender in a sprint event over the last 60 days tells me that this filly is in a very difficult spot not probable that this animal will finish better than she did last out when finishing fourth. This horse ran a common fig in the last race. She shouldn't run better and will likely lose in today's race running that fig.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Have to go with #3 RED DART on the win end if we get at least 9/5 odds

She's a daughter of Exchange Rate whose progeny have hit the board in 43% of nearly 7,000 combined lifetime starts to date. For your information folks, Exchange Rate also qualifies for my Three Star Sire list ... if you would like a description of the rigid rules that I "employ" to make this list, kindly send me an email ... and yes ... this list, and the "rules" are indeed free! #7 CAVAL comes off a "POWER RUN WIN" to break her maiden in her "first asking," 47 days ago at Santa Anita Park ... Jockey Elvis Trujillo was in her irons for that win which produced a +110% return on investment in the process ... For you folks who enjoy a little Thoroughbred Racing History to accompany your handicapping efforts this afternoon ... this 1 5/8 mile turf race was inaugurated in 2004 and named in honor of John's Call, who competed on the flat and over jumps, winning or placing in 30 of 40 starts and earning $1,571,267. Purchased as a yearling in 1992 by Douglas Joyce for $4,000 and trained by Tom Voss, the gelding had his best year in 2000, when he won the Sword Dancer Invitational by 9½ lengths, becoming at age 9 the oldest runner to win a Grade 1 race at Saratoga. That year he also won the Grade 1 Turf Classic Invitational at Belmont Park and finished third in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf. Here in the 11th renewal of this stakes test, #5 MICROMANAGE takes a class drop (-7), and has produced "POWER RUNS" in four straight, hitting the board in three, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in his 4th race back. Jockey Javier Castellano has been in his irons on 5 previous occasions, hitting the board in each, winning twice, and is back this afternoon for his 6th ride, gunning for a "Hat Trick Win!" #8 WINNING CAUSE has produced a

TRUE DESIRE is the clear stand out wager in the eyes of the panel of smart guys. Have an instinct this one might be close for this race. OUTLAW BLUES - When the starter calls, race horses coming out of the 1 position have more wins than is normal. The group always likes a proven player. This horse's high winning clip is confirmation of that. MYRA'S HIHO - This outing could very well be controlled by this gelding. One look at the avgerage TrackMaster Speed Rating will confirm that. The consortium gives this interesting entrant a respectable chance to take this race, class statistics are tops in the grouping.

Hard not to lean toward TWILIGHT BONFIRE as the top selection this time. Can't pass over based on TrackMaster Speed Ratings which have been terrific (96 avg) within the recent past. This interesting entrant has shown us some ability in the past, just look at the 96 average class rating. Should play well for this race. FRAMED ART - Don't let a solid standardbred with such a substantial winning percent like this be passed over. When starting from the 5 position, a much higher than average win percentage has resulted. DIAMOND COWBOY - This gelding has been battling versus some of the most competitive company in this race in recent times. That 90 TrackMaster speed fig clocked in the most recent race puts this nice horse in the mix this time.
