KEY STAT: Man City missed two penalties and hit the woodwork twice in the first-leg

EXPERT VERDICT: The Pep Guardiola revolution achieved lift off in Bucharest as City routed romped to a 5-0 success and the seismic gulf in class between the sides is likely to be seen once again at the Etihad. Nolito notched a late double against Stoke on Saturday and can impress from the first whistle against such limited opponents.

RECOMMENDATION: Nolito first goalscorer

KEY STAT: Accrington have won one of their last eight League Cup outings

EXPERT VERDICT: Just eight miles separates the Lancashire towns of Accrington and Burnley but in footballing terms these clubs are poles apart. Burnley may see the League Cup as a distraction with survival their ultimate goal but even with a number of changes they should still have too much for Stanley.

RECOMMENDATION: Burnley

KEY STAT: Astra’s two goals at West Ham last season came against ten men

EXPERT VERDICT: West Ham have made qualifying for the Europa League a priority this season and they can do just that against Astra in the second leg of their playoff tie. The Hammers were held to a 1-1 draw in Giurgiu but the Romanians were hammered 3-0 at Copenhagen on their last European road trip.

RECOMMENDATION: West Ham-West Ham double result

KEY STAT: Premier League matches involving Liverpool averaged 2.97 goals last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Having already lost ground to Chelsea and the Manchester clubs, both these teams will be eager for three points. Jurgen Klopp's side, facing their third straight Premier League away fixture, have struggled at the back but were scintillating going forward against Arsenal. Both teams to score looks likely, but at least three goals have been scored in seven of the teams' last ten meetings.

RECOMMENDATION: Over 2.5 goals

KEY STAT: Crystal Palace have won two of their last ten home league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Crystal Palace are the only top-flight team yet to score a league goal and it may take time for Christian Benteke to start firing. Benteke has had little playing time during pre-season and their attacking woes look set to continue. Bournemouth drew nine league games last season.

KEY STAT: Southampton have lost just one of their last 11 home league matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Southampton should have run Manchester United closer last week and their finishing is likely to improve as the season wears on. Sunderland have more pressing problems after two defeats, and defensive injuries have to be a concern for David Moyes.

RECOMMENDATION: Southampton

At the Gate - Wednesday
By Mike Dempsey

There are just a dozen days left in the Saratoga meeting, with the big day coming up on Saturday with the $1.25 million Travers (G1).

The Travers is going to draw a big field including Preakness (G1) winner Exaggerator and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Creator.

While the Travers is the highlight on Saturday, there are six supporting stakes including four Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” races.

Toss in six stakes on Friday, two on Thursday and one on Wednesday, it is going to be a great week of betting action at the Spa.

The feature on Wednesday is the $100,000 John’s Call, a 1 5/8 miles turf race for non-winners of a graded stakes race in 2016. This year’s race drew a field of 11.

The race is named after the hard knocking gelding that won 16 of 40 career starts and won the Sword Dancer (G1) and Turf Classic Invitational (G1) at the ripe old age of nine.

The Chad Brown trained Mr Maybe is the 8-5 morning line favorite. The gelding was a disappointing seventh in the United Nations (G1) at Monmouth Park in his last outing. He earned a career top Beyer Speed Figure of 104 last November winning the Red Smith Handicap (G3) and will appreciate the class drop, but is going to be a short price.

Brown has opened up a clear lead as he seeks his first training title at the Spa. He has won 30 races from 96 starters. Second is Todd Pletcher, who has won the training title 13 times. He has won 20 races from his 98 starters.

Kiaran McLaughlin started off the meeting winning with 7 of his first 10 starters but has won with just 3 of 26 since, and is third in the trainer standings.

Here is second race (the opener is a steeplechase) from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 2 Md $20,000 (1:33 ET)
#5 Double Dose 3-1
#4 Chorus Line 5-1
#1 Antebellum 4-1
#9 Phantom Phasr 9-2

Analysis: Double Dose cuts back from a turf route where she chased the early pace and finished gamely for third, beaten just 3/4 of a length for the top spot at the $40,000 level. She was a game second two back going six furlongs on turf. Pedigree wise she seems better suited to dirt, by Flatter out of the stakes winner Chary ($98,413) who did win twice on turf) but she is by Montbrook. The Pletcher barn is 22% winners moving runners form turf to dirt.

Chorus Line also goes turf to dirt, checking in seventh last out going 5 1/2 on the turf here in her first start since her debut last November. In her debut on dirt she dueled for the early lead before weakening to finish sixth. She drops into a softer spot here tagged for $20,000 and should be tighter second off the bench.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 4,5 / 1,4,5,9
TRI: 4,5 / 1,4,5,9 / 1,4,5,8,9

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 The John's Call (5:40 ET)
#6 Biz the Nurse 10-1
#3 Mr Maybe 8-5
#1 Renown 4-1
#10 Street Fashion 9-2

Analysis: Biz the Nurse exits a third place finish in the Cape Henlopen over yielding footing and the top four in that race all land here. Our top pick was making just his third start after a year layoff. He was ninth in the Man O' War (G1) in a real tough spot off the bench and then was not a threat in an eighth place finish in the Belmont Gold Cup at two miles. He was Group 1 placed in Italy and not drops into restricted company while picking up Castellano. The Albertrani barn finally got off the duck at the meeting and the 10-1 morning line looks fair enough.

Mr Maybe makes his first start since a seventh in the United Nations (G1) at Monmouth Park. Three back this guy won the Red Smith (G3) last November. Brown said in the DRF this gelding suffered a slight set back and he might be a work short of putting in his best here after spending some time at Fair Hill. The way the barn is going that may not make a difference.

Wagering
WIN: #6 to win at 6-1 or better.
EX: 3,6 / 1,3,6,10
TRI: 3,6 / 1,3,6,10 / 1,3,4,6,10

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R1: #4 Stormy Alex 10-1
R3: #3 Ultra Arumba 8-1
R6: #1 Mango Nation 12-1
R8: #8 Adirondack Posse 12-1
R9: #6 Biz the Nurse 10-1
R10: #6 Frosty Lady 10-1

Good luck today!

# 5 MACONUPWITHEDRAGON 9/2
# 4 NO TALKING 10/1
# 3 WESTERN HILL 3/1

All signs point to MACONUPWITHEDRAGON for the choice. He's performing in fine form, recording sharp speed ratings. An excellent pick. The 5 post is on fire here at The Meadows. More wins than you would expect. Outstanding in the money clip for Miller and this standardbred. A good likelihood to get the win. NO TALKING - This solid standardbred may have some hidden form, a victory would be a pleasant surprise. WESTERN HILL - 100 percent of the time this trainer and horse team end up in the top three. Big players in this event. Is a very compelling win contender given the 78 speed fig from his most recent contest.

# 3 GO GO RAIDER 5/2
# 1 EASTER BAY 7/2
# 2 TYLERS GREAT 4/1

GO GO RAIDER will have you running to the cashier's window today. This fine animal may have some hidden form, a triumph would be a pleasant surprise. Take a look at this race horse's avg speed rating of 74 and compare to today's class rating. Looks like a competitive wager. With a 75 avg class number, this horse has one of the finest class edges in the field. EASTER BAY - With a respectable 73 speed rating last time out, will more than likely be a factor in this outing. Gelding has one of the best win percents in the field and that could be the deciding factor when they head for home. TYLERS GREAT - Drawing the 2 post at this track has lead to a much better than average win figure. The 74 avg class stat may give this gelding a distinct edge in the group of horses.

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE AUGUST 24, 2016 AND WHICH HAVE STARTED FOR A CLAIMING PRICE OF $5,000 OR LESS. THREE YEAR OLDS, 117 LBS.; OLDER, 121 LBS. ALLOWED 3 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $3,500.

RECOMMENDED*CHOICES

# 8 ROCKIN ROSIE 2/1

# 6 NO LUCK 10/1

# 7 SUMEI 5/1

I think ROCKIN ROSIE is a respectable choice. Garcia should be able to get this filly to break out sharply in this contest. Is a solid contender - given the 60 Equibase Speed Fig from her most recent race. Well above average win rate at this distance/surface. NO LUCK - She has strong class ratings, averaging 71, and has to be given a shot for this race. Expect a sound attempt with the class drop. SUMEI - Have to take notice when any pony makes a quick major improvement.

RECOMMENDED*CHOICES

# 1 BLUES MUSEUM 8/1

# 3 VALID PROSPECTOR 3/1

# 5 ROYAL TREE 7/2

My choice here is BLUES MUSEUM and could score at a price in here. I like the rider on this gelding - very good chance to win the contest. Smith has sharp numbers that point to this gelding to be a strong contender. VALID PROSPECTOR - He looks formidable in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the halfway point. Ought to be given consideration - I like the figures from the last competition. ROYAL TREE - Dunn has him trained soundly to break promptly out of the gate.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2 - Post: 5:50pm - Optional Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $29,000 Class Rating: 101

Rating:

#4 LIGHTHOUSE SOUND (ML=4/1)
#7 GRAND OLD GAME (ML=6/1)
#5 PETER'S PROJECT (ML=8/1)

LIGHTHOUSE SOUND - This gelding usually does his best running late. Look for him back of the pack early in the race and finishing strongly on the tiring speed horses. Looking at this gelding's running lines, I see he's almost always in the money. This jock and trainer have a fabulous winning percent when they unite. I like to wager on this angle, a horse coming back off a nice contest within the last 30 days. GRAND OLD GAME - Martinez and Trombetta perform well when they combine forces. Hard to top a winning percentage of 35. PETER'S PROJECT - This horse coming off a strong performance in the last thirty days is a win candidate in my opinion.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 BROTHER PAT (ML=2/1), #2 SO KITTEN (ML=7/2), #6 PLEASANT OUTLOOK (ML=6/1),

BROTHER PAT - The probable favorite is suspect here with the lack of workouts. SO KITTEN - Granted the last race was nice, finishing second. The lack of any recent activity raises some concerns though. PLEASANT OUTLOOK - This horse ran a substandard fig last out. He shouldn't run better and will likely get beat today running that rating.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Bet on #4 LIGHTHOUSE SOUND to win if you can get at least 7/2 odds

Woodbine - Race #5 - Post: 8:47pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 63

Rating:

#8 ZLATICA (ML=8/1)
#7 SONO PRONTA (ML=3/1)

ZLATICA - This filly finished well ahead of the third horse on July 30th. Those horses tend to run well next time out. This filly has 'tactical' speed, Bahen will use this advantage by laying in perfect striking position behind the pace, and getting first run on the leaders. The jockey and trainer combination have a beneficial return on investment when they partner up. This thoroughbred has increased her Equibase speed figs in each of the last two races. That kind of progress is telling me this horse is ready. The 62 last race fig looks mighty good in black and white. SONO PRONTA - This speedy sort should be aided by this shorter trip. Ryan's agent must relish anytime Parente gives them a mount; winning pct together is outstanding. Last race was at Woodbine in a race with a class rating of 78. Dropping considerably in class rating this time puts her in a solid position right here. With 'blinkers-on' this filly should be very competitive.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 CORIOLIS (ML=2/1), #1 MIA'S LAST GIFT (ML=7/2), #5 NO DOUGH (ML=6/1),

CORIOLIS - No wager value on this horse at the probable odds of 2/1. MIA'S LAST GIFT - Didn't show much last time out of the box. Probably won't make a winning move today. This questionable contender ran a most unsatisfactory speed figure in the last race. She shouldn't improve and will probably get beat in today's race running that rating. NO DOUGH - The Brain tells me to keep away from ponies in short distance contests that haven't hit the board in short distance races lately. The fig in the last race doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's contest. Mark this animal as a likely underpriced contender.

RACE #9 - SARATOGA RACE COOURSE - 5:18 PM EASTERN POST

The John's Call Stakes

13.0 FURLONGS TURF THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $100,000.00 PURSE

#3 MR MAYBE
#6 BIZ THE NURSE
#10 STREET FASHION
#1 RENOWN
This 13.0 furlong turf race was inaugurated in 2004 and named in honor of John's Call, who competed on the flat and over jumps, winning or placing in 30 of 40 starts and earning $1,571,267. Purchased as a yearling in 1992 by Douglas Joyce for $4,000 and trained by Tom Voss, the gelding had his best year in 2000, when he won the Sword Dancer Invitational by 9½ lengths, becoming at age 9 the oldest runner to win a Grade 1 race at Saratoga. That year he also won the Grade 1 Turf Classic Invitational at Belmont Park and finished third in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf. In 2006. Here in the 13th running of the John's Call, #3 MR MAYBE qualifies as a TrackMaster PLUS "PowerPony," takes a class drop (-5), is the pace profile leader in this field, and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in four of his last five outings, winning three times in this recent streak of racing consistency. Jockey Irad Ortiz and Trainer Chard Brown send him to the post for the "Wednesday Feature" ... they've hit the board with60% of more than 250 entries saddled as a team to date. #6 BIZ THE NURSE, an Irish-bred entry, and a 10-1 BOMB, has turned in a quartet of "POWER RUNS" in his last five starts. Jockey Javier Castellano has been in his irons on one previous occasion, posting a win, and is back today here at "The Spa" for his 2nd ride, gunning for a 2nd "Circle Trip!"

Northfield: Wednesday 8/24 Analysis
By Jeremey Day

DRF

Race 8 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Jeremey’s $1 Pick Four Play:

1,4 / 1,4,7 / 1,2,3 / 6 = $18

Best Bet: BLACK DENIM N LACE (7th)

Spot Play: JIN MCRHODY (9th)

Race 1

(3) FRASER RIDGE looks to be getting better with every start; short price. (4) TADY‘S COUNT has a very nice pedigree and can improve. (5) BETTER BELIEVE gets sent out for top connections; needs more.

Race 2

(3) BARNABAS looks to bounce back after he had his winning streak snapped in his last start. (4) MAJOR NEMESIS has some gait issues but if the freshman minds his manners he can upset. (5) GOTTA GO B B comes from a proven family and has flashed ability.

Race 3

(5) MAGIC VACATION might be the only threat to the favorite in the race. If the 2-year-old somehow manages to get an early lead, he can score. (1) BUCKEYE BOSS will look to stay undefeated for white hot connections; short price. (7) ROSE RUN SPANKY gets saddled with a very tough starting post. The trotter might be able to get up for a nice piece late.

Race 4

(4) SCOTCH MCEWAN has now paced two really big miles in a row. If the pacer can duplicate those efforts he will be tough to beat. (3) MCGOLD came a nice back half last start from a tough position. (5) INDIGO ART made a miscue last week but looks to have some ability.

Race 5

(6) ALWAYS A GOOD TIME got lucky drawing into the weakest division. The freshman colt‘s sire has been on fire and dominant so far in the stake races. (4) HOPE IMA VICTORY should be sharper this time out after needing his last start. (3) JAILHOUSE SAM put in a decent effort last week over the off track; threat.

Race 6

(3) SAND STINGER has been much better for new connections. The pacer will look to make it two in a row against similar. (5) MYSTICAL HEART closed up good late ground last start and should offer a decent price. (6) POR QUE NO comes into the race off an easy victory. The 3-year-old looks to have a much tougher trip to navigate this week.

Race 7

(6) BLACK DENIM N LACE swooped the field last week impressively. The trotting mare might have gained some confidence from that victory. (4) HEZA MERLIN is a lightly race trotter that has room to improve against a suspect bunch. (8) WHITE EARNIE needs to find a way into the race but could threaten with some racing luck.

Race 8

(1) ELOCUTIONIST gets the best post and is capable of jumping up with a big effort. (4) MODERN WARFARE is one of a few in the race that has been competitive at this level. (5) UNADORNED HANOVER always seems to come up empty late. The pacer could use a smooth trip.

Race 9

(4) JIN MCRHODY gets sent out for a low percentage pilot, however the 2-year-old will be very dangerous with an easy early lead. (7) DRUNK ON YOUR LOVE is 3 for 3 but freshman colt gets his biggest test yet with the far outside starting post. (1) MCTHRILLER is a major player from the rail getting sent out for top connections.

Race 10

(2) MCLUCKY has yet to finish worst than second in five career efforts. (1) CORNER CON ARTIST had no chance last week but will be much closer turning for home. (3) PACE CAR has been very consistent for the top barn in the country; threat.

Race 11

(6) OFFICIALLY CREEK has been sharp in his last two. The pacing gelding will have his sights set on the front early. (3) OGRADYS FIRST MAN faces a much softer bunch this week and will offer a nice price. (4) OHIO LARRY has been racing better than what the pacer shows on paper.

Race 12

(3) FLY PAST HANOVER has yet to win on the year but takes a significant drop in class. (2) CHAD has just been racing evenly but also faces easier. (1) BOSCO’S ANGEL gets the best post in a weak and inconsistent field.

Race 13

(2) SAND ROCKER dominated similar last week and is right back in the same class; short price. (4) FLYIN ORION has shown good improvement in three straight and could be one of a few threats to the top choice in this race. (1) ADIOS AMIGOS just missed at this level two back and gets sent out for a low percentage pilot.

Race 14

In a weak field full of question marks, (9) YOUHADMEFROMHELLO should be closer turning for home and will offer a big price. (7) RADIO LOVER would be considered the horse to beat had the filly drew inside. (1) HEART OF GLASS is a well bred pacer that keeps a top driver and has the best starting post.

Race 15

(6) NOBLE TRICK needed his last start on the fair circuit and has lots of room to improve in his second start back off the layoff. (4) AWESTREOS has been very competitive at this level on the year. (5) FOX VALLEY ARMOR might need a start but is one of the faster pacers in the race.

August Pitchers Report
By Marc Lawrence

With the MLB trading deadline officially closed, and the NFL preseason whetting our pigskin palates, the month of August sets the table for the stretch run of the baseball season. Which pitchers can we count on to satisfy our tastes, and which ones figure to sour our stomachs?

Take a look below.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of August.

On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in August, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each April over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s August list.

I’ll be back next month with September’s Good Month Pitchers.

Until then, as legendary singer and songwriter Neil Diamond would say, enjoy the hot August nights.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

Arrieta, Jake - 10-5 (6-3 A)

After being Clayton Kershaw-like for nearly 12 months, the Cubs starter has "regressed" back to just being among the best starters in baseball. Arrieta has a nearly 3-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio and only allows a base hit 70 percent of the time in innings pitched this season, among the finest in the majors.

Duffy, Danny - 11-4 (6-1 H)

After starting the season as a reliever, the Kansas City left-hander was forced back into the rotation based on need and he has responded. Since June, after a pair of starts, Duffy has put up an ERA of just over 3.00 and opposing batters have just a .289 on-base percentage against him.

*Gallardo, Yovani - 9-4 (5-2 A)

Not close to the same pitcher he used to be with Milwaukee, with ERA so far this season approaching almost two runs higher than career average (5.37 vs. 3.73). The lost velocity is to blame and secondary pitches have less bite. For Baltimore to win AL East, Gallardo has to find some of his old magic.

Greinke, Zack - 10-5 (5-2 H)

After being on the shelf with oblique injury since late June, Greinke is close to returning for Arizona if no reoccurrence were to take place after a rehab start or two this month. After pathetic start to season, the D-Backs prized starter has cut ERA by 2 1/2 runs and is close to career norms in all major categories. Elite starter.

*Hamels, Cole - 12-6 (8-4 H)

Having typical Hamels season, with low numbers across the board. In bigger picture, underrated high level hurler who has not been getting acclaim after Phillies fall, but has been ace with Texas. As usual, left-handed batters have no chance with .176 batting average and .287 slugging percentage.

*Iwakuma, Hisashi - 12-5 (7-1 A)

Not having normal season for Seattle, with hits allowed much higher than usual for Iwakuma. However, has won four of five starts and the Mariners are 10-3 when the righty has toed the rubber since May 20. With Felix Hernandez back, this pair could lead Seattle charge to postseason.

Milone, Tom - 7-3 (4-1 A)

Milone starts for bad Minnesota club and is inconsistent as ever. Of his 74 hits allowed in only 59 2/3 innings, 11 have gone the yard. Maybe he can keep the ball down and spot his pitches better like previous August’s.

*Sanchez, Anibal - 9-3 (5-1 H)

With decreased velocity and no action on breaking pitches, Sanchez ERA has been six or higher almost all season. Not sure if he can respond this month, with opponents having BA over .300 and owning a WHIP of 1.64.

*Strasburg, Stephen - 13-3 (8-1 H)

Only July 21st, Strasburg suffered first loss of entire season after 13 consecutive wins. Though the fastball is no longer in upper 90's all the time, the breaking pitches disappear from batter's view and he's been exceptional. If Strasburg has true to form month, he will have real shot at 20 wins in 2016.

Teheran, Julio - 11-5 (7-2 H)

Suffered lat strain in late July and has been a victim of no run support from bad Braves club with 2.81 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and opposing batters at only .205 batting average. Note: Teheran’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

Weaver, Jered - 12-5 (7-3 A)

Shell of his former self at 33. Never a hard thrower, Weaver's fastball only occasionally makes the upper 80's these days and his once dominating changeup is a pitch batter's wait on now with lack of variance of speed of pitches. Will blend good and really awful performances these days.

*Zimmermann, Jordan - 12-6 (8-3 H)

On July 24th had excellent rehab start and will be rejoining Detroit this month. After sensational start with Tigers, Zimmermann was tagged for at least five runs in four of his last five outings. Detroit needs the Zimmermann they had early in the season to have chance to catch Cleveland in AL Central.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Gray, Sonny - 5-11 (0-7 A)

Given Gray's troubles this month, his woes of all season are very likely to continue. Gray simply has been more hittable the entire season, permitting those with bats to hit almost 50 points higher than normal batting average permitted of .233. Note: Gray’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

*Hellickson, Jeremy - 4-11 (2-9 A)

Back of the rotation starter, Hellickson has largely performed better than expected for Philadelphia and as this article went live, he was rumored to be traded. His KW ratio is significantly higher at 4 to 1 compared to 3 to 1 for his career. Will he be able to maintain the rest of season?

Kazmir, Scott - 5-11 (1-7 A)

The Dodgers port-sider has 9-4 record, but his 4.41 ERA is still above career average of 3.98. Durability has been issue all season, with too many starts around five innings for what is supposed to be Los Angeles No. 2 or 3 starter.

Koehler, Tom - 4-13 (0-10 A)

Above average arm but always up or down and unless he pulls a Rich Hill, at 30 is not likely to change. An 8-8 record, 4.18 ERA and WHIP of 1.46, is about what we have come to expect from Mr. Koehler. Note: Koehler’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

*Miley, Wade - 5-11 (1-6 A)

Overrated lefty who does not miss many bats and fails to come anywhere close to averaging punch-out an inning. Strictly an innings-eater and provides nothing more than 50-50 chance to win.

Miller, Shelby - 5-11 (2-8 H)

Demoted to Triple-A in July after disastrous campaign. Miller hopes to regain confidence and repair mechanics that are really out of whack and return to Arizona yet this season.

Samardzija, Jeff - 5-13 (3-8 H)

After appearing as the No.3 starter San Francisco wanted for two months, Smards has returned to same old serviceable pitcher of the past and seen his ERA climb from 2.84 to present 4.30 heading into this month.

MLB roundup: Cubs' Arrieta posts 16th victory
By The Sports Xchange

SAN DIEGO -- Jake Arrieta shut out the Padres on two hits over eight innings Tuesday and Kris Bryant and Addison Russell each hit their second homers in as many nights at Petco Park as the Cubs held on to defeat the Padres 5-3 before a crowd of 33,614 that was packed with Cubs partisans.
Arrieta took over the National League lead with his 16th win.
The Padres' first hit was a clean single to right by left fielder Alex Dickerson leading off the second. Catcher Christian Bethancourt doubled with two out in the eighth after Arrieta had retired 10 straight Padres.
Arrieta (16-5, 2.62 earned run average) had six strikeouts and issued three walks, although he faced only one batter over the minimum. The Cubs defense turned three inning-ending double plays and catcher Willson Contreras picked a runner of third.

Pirates 7, Astros 1
PITTSBURGH -- Ivan Nova pitched a six-hit complete game, and Gregory Polanco homered twice and drove in three runs to help Pittsburgh defeat Houston.
After belting a home run to left field in the third inning, Polanco smashed his team-leading 19th off left-handed reliever Tony Sipp two innings later to give the Pirates a 6-0 lead through five. It marked the second time this season and in his career Polanco hit two home runs in a game. He also hit two and finished with three RBI against the St. Louis Cardinals on July 4.
Nova (3-0) used 98 pitches to cruise through his fourth career complete game. He was only challenged by Marwin Gonzalez, who recorded three hits.

Blue Jays 7, Angels 2
TORONTO -- Russell Martin had three hits and two RBIs, Michael Saunders homered, R.A. Dickey pitched into the seventh inning as Toronto defeated Los Angeles.
Saunders hit his 21st homer of the season in the eighth against A.J. Achter. Dickey (9-13) allowed six hits, two walks and two runs in 6 2/3 innings. The knuckleballer struck out two and allowed a home run in winning for the second time in his past seven starts.
Nick Buss hit his first major league home run for the Angels. The left fielder also had an infield single and a stolen base.

Reds 3, Rangers 0
CINCINNATI -- Joey Votto continued his torrid pace, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Dan Straily tossed six shutout innings to reach 10 wins on the season, lifting Cincinnati past Texas.
Since the All-Star break, Votto is batting .455 with six homers and 32 RBIs.
Straily (10-6) yielded three hits and two walks while striking out five. He outdueled Derek Holland (5-6), who gave up one run on four hits in six innings.

Royals 1, Marlins 0
MIAMI -- Lorenzo Cain's sixth-inning RBI single broke up a scoreless duel as Kansas City topped Miami to win its ninth game in a row.
Paulo Orlando led off the sixth with a four-pitch walk. He stole second and scored when Cain drilled a 3-0 pitch to center.
Yordano Ventura (9-9) tossed six shutout innings, and Kelvin Herrera earned his eighth save. Miami starter Andrew Cashner (4-10) limited the Royals to one run on four hits in six innings.

Red Sox 2, Rays 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Mookie Betts' eighth-inning throw helped Boston beat Tampa Bay.
The Rays had a shot at the setting up the tying run with one out when Kevin Kiermaier ripped a shot down the right field line. As he tried to turn a double into a triple, Betts threw a strike to third base, where Travis Shaw applied the tag on a head-first slide. Instead of the tying run at third base, the Rays had two outs and no rally.
David Ortiz collected his 98th RBI with a third-inning single, and he scored in the inning on an error. Boston starter Clay Buchholz (5-9) threw 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball.

Orioles 8, Nationals 1
BALTIMORE -- Kevin Gausman threw six scoreless innings, Adam Jones tied a career high with four hits, and Baltimore topped Washington.
Gausman (5-10) scattered six hits with two strikeouts and two walks to pick up his second consecutive win. Chris Davis hit his 30th home run for Baltimore, a solo shot in the ninth, and Matt Wieters contributed an RBI double and an RBI single.
Washington shortstop Trea Turner had a career-high four hits, but he was called out twice attempting to steal second. Bryce Harper also had a pair of singles for the Nationals, who have lost three in a row.

White Sox 9, Phillies 1
CHICAGO -- Left-hander Carlos Rodon allowed just three hits over 6 2/3 shutout innings, and Jose Abreu and Justin Morneau each homered as Chicago beat Philadelphia to open a two-game interleague series.
Rodon (4-8) picked up his second win in three starts while throwing 109 pitches, including 71 strikes. He walked one and struck out four.
Rodon received ample offensive support as Chicago scored once in the first inning and added three runs apiece in the third and fifth, then two more in the sixth.

Tigers 8, Twins 3
MINNEAPOLIS -- Victor Martinez and Erick Aybar homered, and Anibal Sanchez pitched seven solid innings to lead Detroit to a win over Minnesota at Target Field.
Both Martinez and Aybar went deep as part of a three-run seventh inning that helped put the game away for Detroit, which improved to 8-2 against Minnesota this season.
The Twins got a home run from Brian Dozier, giving them a brief 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. However, in the next half-inning, the Tigers put together the first of two three-run rallies, scoring one on a wild pitch and two more on a single by Cameron Maybin.

Mets 7, Cardinals 4
ST. LOUIS -- Making an unexpected major league debut, Robert Gsellman picked up a win the New York Mets needed badly.
Gsellman, relieving injured starter Jonathon Niese with one out in the first inning, worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings as New York stopped St. Louis at Busch Stadium in a matchup of National League wild-card hopefuls.
Gsellman allowed two hits and three walks while striking out two. Five more relievers followed after that, with Jeurys Familia pitching the ninth for his 42nd save as the Mets (63-62) drew within 3 1/2 games of St. Louis for the NL's second wild-card spot.

Brewers 6, Rockies 4
MILWAUKEE -- Jon Gray struck out 10 batters and Nolan Arenado hit a three-run home run but the Colorado bullpen allowed three runs in the seventh as Milwaukee rallied for a victory at Miller Park.
Trailing, 4-2, heading into the seventh, pinch-hitter Orlando Arcia and Jonathan Villar notched back-to-back one-out doubles off Jake McGee and Boone Logan to make it a one-run game.
Logan (2-3) struck out Scooter Gennett and intentionally walked Braun before giving way to Carlos Estevez. Estevez got ahead, 0-2 to Hernan Perez, who ripped the next offering down the line in right to put the Brewers in front and make a winner out of Brent Suter (1-1) for the first time in his career.

Yankees 5, Mariners 1
SEATTLE -- CC Sabathia continued his mastery at Safeco Field, pitching seven strong innings to improve to 9-1 there as New York beat Seattle.
Sabathia (8-10) allowed one run on three hits, with seven strikeouts, and now has a career ERA of 2.09 in 13 starts at Seattle. He retired the last nine batters he faced and didn't give up a hit after the fourth inning.
New York center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, while rookie third baseman Ronald Torreyes had three hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Yankees.

Braves 7, Diamondbacks 4
PHOENIX -- Matt Kemp hit an eighth-inning, bases-loaded double to drive in two runs, and a third run scored on an outfield error on the play, lifting Atlanta to a victory over Arizona at Chase Field.
With Arizona in front 4-2, Dansby Swanson singled to open the eighth inning off Jake Barrett (1-2), and Ender Inciarte singled with one out. Freddie Freeman walked with two outs.
Kemp followed with an opposite-field liner into the right field corner that Mitch Haniger bobbled at the fence as the bases cleared.

Athletics 9, Indians 1
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Danny Valencia returned to the starting lineup and collected two hits, and Khris Davis belted his 33rd home run, propelling Oakland to a victory over Cleveland.
Left-hander Sean Manaea limited the American League Central leaders to one run and three hits over seven innings, helping the A's beat the Indians for the first time in five meetings this season.
The loss was just Cleveland's seventh in its past 29 games against left-handed starters.

Dodgers 9, Giants 5
LOS ANGELES -- Andrew Toles and Rob Segedin homered for the second straight game, and Los Angeles defeated San Francisco before 46,899 at Dodger Stadium.
Toles hit a two-run shot in the eighth off reliever Javier Lopez.
Adrian Gonzalez had three RBIs and has hits in 16 consecutive games. Justin Turner and Corey Seager added three hits apiece. Seager scored three times for the Dodgers, who increased their lead in the National League West to two games over the Giants.
