KEY STAT: Legia are unbeaten in four league games this term

EXPERT VERDICT: Whatever happens against Legia Warsaw, Dundalk have performed miracles to ensure that they embark on their first European group-stage campaign next month but that may be in the Europa League rather than the Champions League. Legia are a tough side to break down and look fair value at around even money to seize the initiative.

RECOMMENDATION: Legia Warsaw

KEY STAT: Celtic are unbeaten in 13 competitive home games

EXPERT VERDICT: There have already been a few anxious moments for Celtic in their pursuit of a Champions League group-stage berth. The Bhoys squeaked past Kazakh champions Astana in the previous round but they should negotiate the challenge of Hapoel with greater ease and ensure they take a telling advantage to Israel next week.

RECOMMENDATION: Celtic to win 2-0

KEY STAT: There were seven goals in the two games between these sides last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Romania’s Astra Giurgiu once again stand in West Ham’s way of a Europa League berth and on last season’s evidence this will be a close affair. Astra won 4-3 on aggregate last term, drawing the first leg at the Hammer’s former Upton Park home 2-2. West Ham looked shaky at the back in the previous round so backing both teams to score looks wise.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

At the Gate - Wednesday
By Mike Dempsey

It is going to be a great week of horse betting, with a huge weekend coming up that features the $1 million Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar.

The defending champion Beholder put in her final work for Saturday’s race with a four-furlong drill in :47 at Del Mar. Post positions were drawn last night and I will have selections in Saturday’s column.

It will be a great match up between the brilliant mare and the 2014 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner California Chrome.

Last Saturday’s stakes at Saratoga got washed out due to the weather and are rescheduled this week. The $200,000 Adirondack (G3) for juvenile fillies will be contested on Friday and the $500,000 Fourstardave (G1) will be run on Saturday.

Also on Saturday at the Spa is the $600,000 Alabama (G1) featuring the undefeated Songbird.

We are into the second half of the 40-day Saratoga meeting and Chad Brown continues to lead in the trainer standings with 23 winners, six more than Todd Pletcher, who is looking for his 13th Spa title.

If the weather holds up Brown may be tough to catch. Of his 23 winners at the meeting 17 have come in turf races. He has runners in three races on Wednesday, Pletcher will start runners in two races.

Irad Ortiz. Jr leads in the jockey standings with 31, four more than his brother Jose with 27. John Velazquez and Javier Castellano are tied for third with 25 each.

The Ortiz brothers ride more races than any of their counterparts and it may be tough for them both to get passed. In my opinion they are both overrated, but I guess most of the trainers in New York would disagree with me.

Here is today’s second race (the opener is a steeplechase) from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 2 Clm $16,000 (1:33 ET)
#5 Lutheran Miss 6-5
#6 Shakespearean Dream 9-2
#1 Jademarie 3-1
#2 Broadway Music Gal 4-1

Analysis: Lutheran Miss was a much the best winner last out against $12,500 claimers and now returns off nearly a three-month break for the Servis barn that is 24% winners with runners coming back off a 61-180-day layoff. The runner up in her last outing was Is She Hot, who came back to beat $12,500 claimers in her next outing. Servis has been very live at the meeting and this gal is going to be tough here at a puny price to starts off the Pick 5.

Shakespearean Dream was not a threat last out here on the turf for a $40,000 tag, checking in sixth at 32-1. She gets a jock upgrade from the seven-pound bug to Carmouche and returns to dirt. She is 0 for 17 on turf so the surface switch should suit her as will the class drop.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 1-1 or better.
EX: 5,6 / 1,5,6
TRI: no play

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 The Bolton Landing (5:40 ET)
#7 Lull 5-2
#2 Con Te Partiro 8-1
#1 Big City Dreamin 2-1
#5 Truthful 8-1

Analysis: Lull was a good looking gate to wire winner in her debut at Belmont park going six furlongs on turf, drawing away to win by three lengths. The runner up and sixth place finishers came out of that race to graduate in their next starts. Clement is 25% winners overall in turf sprints and this gal has a nice pedigree, by War Front out of a Tiznow mare. She looks capable of winning right back and may have a better future later on with more ground.

Con Te Partiro was bet down the chalk in her debut at Keeneland on the main track and she did not disappointing, winning by 5 1/2 lengths. Last out in the Kentucky Juvenile the filly prompted the early pace, took over the lead but weakened in the stretch to finish fourth. The third place finisher Thirstforlife returned to break her maiden in her next start at Churchill Downs and then run third in the Best Pal (G2) in her last outing at Santa Anita. She tires turf for the first time here for the Ward barn that is 16% winners moving runners form dirt to turf. She has a solid turf pedigree, by Scat Daddy out of a stakes placed Street Cry mare that has dropped one other foal to race, dirt stakes winner Donworth ($281,345).

Big City Dreamin is coming off a sharp win last out on the fake stuff at Presque Isle where she went gate to wire to win by eight lengths. She was outrun in her lone go on turf when Ward shipped her to Royal Ascot and she caught soft footing in the Windsor Castle Stakes. She makes her first start here for the Brown barn that is 25% winners with newcomers to the barn. The last couple of years Brown has won a ton of turf races at the Spa but most have been routes. He won one Monday with a first timer but was previously 2 for 25 dating back three years at the Spa.

Wagering
WIN: #7 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 2,7 / 1,2,5,7
TRI: 2,7 / 1,2,5,7 / 1,2,5,7,9

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R4: #3 My Cara Mia 8-1
R5: #4 Enduring Warrior 8-1
R6: #7 Short Squeeze 12-1
R7: #10 Dr. Dorr 8-1

R9: #5 truthful 8-1
R10: #11 Alien Gray 12-1

# 7 DOCTOR TERROR 9/2
# 4 JABAS LUCK 4/1
# 3 BESTULLDOTANITE 3/1

DOCTOR TERROR is the most respectable bet in this race. Good for a win wager just off the outstanding prior class ratings. Have to like this horse. JABAS LUCK - Can't miss the connections here, a 34 winning statistic, one of the strongest at getting into the winners circle. When Sheppard sends this interesting entrant out you can bet they'll be in the money, stats show them there 86 percent of the time. BESTULLDOTANITE - Take a look at this horse's average speed figure of 83 and compare to today's class rating. Looks like a formidable wager. Outstanding win stat combined with recent very good performances. We think she can handle this group.

# 5 AMICUS 9/2
# 4 LOCK TIGHT 5/2
# 6 COLLECT THE BRASS 6/1

Hey, listen up! AMICUS is the knowledgeable wager if you like to win. This gelding has the ability to take positive advantage of a favorable pace scenario in this competition. Recent figures for the driver - 22 percent win - make this gelding a stand out in the group of animals. LOCK TIGHT - Deserves a shot given the positive win pct he sports. When the starter calls, horses coming out of the 4 post have more wins than you would expect. COLLECT THE BRASS - This standardbred may have some hidden form, a ultimate prize would be a pleasant surprise

RECOMMENDED*CHOICES

# 5 HURRICANE ANDY 5/2

# 7 TAKE A BITE 4/1

# 2 CANDY SPACE CENTER 7/2

My selection for this event is HURRICANE ANDY. He has been running admirably and the Equibase speed figs are among the strongest in this group of animals. Could best this group of horses in this race based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 79 - of his last race. Appears to have a decent class edge based on the recent company kept. TAKE A BITE - Is worth taking a close look at and may be a wager - strong Equibase Speed Figures (56 average) at today's distance and surface lately. Is tough not to consider based on speed figs which have been solid - 57 avg - of late. CANDY SPACE CENTER - Is a solid contender - given the 68 speed rating from his most recent race. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Englehart running at this distance are the top in this field.

# 6 SONIC RUN 8/1

# 2 SHOWTIME SIS 2/1

# 4 EURO K SHOTGUN 5/2

SONIC RUN looks formidable to best this field especially at a long price. First time entrants out of Song of the Sword have a solid return on investment of +335. This filly looks good in this contest since Willis has a very solid win percent with horses going this distance. SHOWTIME SIS - Sire -Euroears- has produced offspring who have done solidly in their first attempts. Calhoun has posted sharp dividends (+11 return on investment ) with first asking starters. Deserves a shot given strong bloodlines. EURO K SHOTGUN - Trout has the best figs in this group with starters in their first trips to the post. Euroears first time starters are frequently ready to run first time out of the box. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Trout have shown solid results recently.

Woodbine - Race #3 - Post: 7:45pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $45,600 Class Rating: 98

Rating:

#2 COPPERPLATE (ML=6/1)
#6 DAN THE TIN MAN (ML=10/1)
#5 SPEIGHTSLAND (ML=4/1)

COPPERPLATE - I like to bet on this handicapping angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a strong race within the last 30 days. Last workout was the second fastest of the day. Certainly on edge for a good one today. Gelding is a few starts into a comeback here. Should give a good performance today. DAN THE TIN MAN - Came home in quick time last time out. A positive sign. SPEIGHTSLAND - Casse has this horse signed up for the right race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 STORMY RUSH (ML=9/5), #1 KITTEN CANDY (ML=2/1), #4 FRENCH QUARTER (ML=8/1),

STORMY RUSH - I don't normally play a favorite that hasn't been to the track in the last two to three weeks. KITTEN CANDY - Hard to take this horse at the price after the finish (fifth) in the last affair. Hasn't finished in the money in any short distance contests lately. Doubtful to see him doing it today either. FRENCH QUARTER - In this type of situation, this runner's inability to make up ground in the last clash is a troubling signal.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Play #2 COPPERPLATE to win if you can get odds of 7/2 or more

Penn National - Race #8 - Post: 9:10pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,500 Class Rating: 60

Rating:

#10 KILLER WHALE (ML=6/1)
#3 I DO NOT KNOW (ML=8/1)

KILLER WHALE - Taking this jock/trainer combination is a smart move. This affair sets up for this gelding. I call this the 'Lone Stalker' scenario. When the real running starts, he'll be in the 'garden' spot. This horse coming off a solid try in the last month is a win candidate in my opinion. I DO NOT KNOW - Last out, finished fourth on a sloppy track at Penn National. Have to give a better effort in today's race. Lower impost of -7. In my opinion, a movement of 5 is important, so this gelding falls into this category.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 LUCKY PROSPECTOR (ML=5/2), #4 OLD KEY WEST (ML=4/1), #2 CHANGEINTHESCENERY (ML=5/1),

LUCKY PROSPECTOR - Common speed fig in the last race at Penn National at 6 furlongs. Don't believe this pony will improve too much in today's event. OLD KEY WEST - Didn't look so hot last out. Probably won't make an impact today. Really don't think the last speed fig was garnered legitimately. The off conditions may have lead to such a high rating. CHANGEINTHESCENERY - Not probable that the speed rating he registered on June 29th will hold up in this clash.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Putting our cash on #10 KILLER WHALE to win. Have to have odds of at least 5/2 or better though

5½ FURLONGS TURF TWO YEAR OLD FILLIES STAKES $100,000.00 PURSE

#1 BIG CITY DREAMIN
#7 LULL
#3 MADE ME SHIVER
#2 CON TE PARTIRO
Well folks, this race is named for the town of Bolton Landing, a "sheltered" Adirondack community on the shores of Lake George, about 22 miles from Saratoga Springs which has drawn world-weary writers, artists, musicians and generations of families enjoying the pure crystalline waters of Lake George. Here in just the 2nd running of this stakes race, #1 BIG CITY DREAMIN has posted a pair of "POWER RUN WINS" in her three career starts to date, and goes to the post with the skills of Jockey Irad Ortiz, and Trainer Chad Brown in her corner ... they've hit the board with 60% of more than 250 entries saddled as a team to date. #7 LULL is the overall speed and pace profile leader in this stakes field sprinting at, or about, today s distance of 5½ furlongs on the turf, and comes off a maiden-breaking, "POWER RUN WIN" in his "first asking."

Best Bet: ERGO HANOVER (9th)

Spot Play: CALLING A VICTORY (5th)

Race 1

(2) ANDOVER ISLE well bred trotter just needs to mind his manners for a piece. (1) RUN WITH ME four-year-old gets the best post and needed his last start. (3) SR LILLYSTAR is very inconsistent from week to week; use underneath.

Race 2

(1) CHEYENNE REIJANE lightly raced two-year-old is one of few in the field with some upside. (3) SAND ROCKER has room to improve second start out for a new barn. (7) FLYIN ORION has hit the board in two straight. The pacer is one of two horses in the race with a win on the year.

Race 3

(5) LIBERTY BEACH has been competitive against much tougher on the year. (3) FORTUNE JAMES has just been racing evenly but will offer a big price in a field full of question marks. (1) DOUBLE O JESSE picks up a huge driver change with the best post.

Race 4

(6) WELCOME WAGON pacer has been awful for a few months, however the pacer takes a significant drop in class. (5) PLAYMAKER was much improved last week against similar. (9) GOOD BY ALIBYE pacer is 0 for the year but could be in line for a nice ground-saving trip up close.

Race 5

In a wide open and evenly matched race, (9) CALLING A VICTORY has been facing tougher and just needs a smooth trip for a chance to score. (7) SPIES AND LIES raced well at this level last week showing decent late trot. (3) HELLO CARLO veteran trotter burned cash last week but is capable.

Race 6

(4) BURSTING BLAZE pacer picks up a huge driver change. The 8-year-old is 0 for the year but has been facing much tougher. (5) HANGON MAN the pacer is capable of a good effort but has just been racing evenly. (9) RIDGE PARK has finished second in two of his previous three starts at this level; use underneath.

Race 7

(6) UPFRONT CHIP DADDY picks up the top driver off a decent effort. (7) BOOKEM veteran trotter owns come back class and can threaten with some racing luck. (1) SIRKULER takes a significant drop in class with the best post.

Race 8

(4) WIT AND WISDOM has been competitive against better; threat. (9) STEVIE DIAMONDS the pacer was a game winner when last seen at this level. (6) JUMPIN JACK J will offer a big price and could be in line to pick up the pieces late.

Race 9

(4) ERGO HANOVER drew off by open lengths last week. A similar effort makes it two straight. (2) HOUSE OF CASH has not won a race in some time but has been knocking on the door against tougher; threat. (1) HERES ETHEL gets the best post in an evenly matched race.

Race 10

(1) FLYING METRO picks up a big driver change with the best post. (6) REGIL TIGER hit the board last week against similar but looks to offer low value; use caution. (9) BLESSING STONE pacer has room to improve second start out for a new barn.

Race 11

(1) POR QUE NO filly has burned cash in four straight but gets the best post in a weak field. (6) THETIS owns a win against similar and closed decent ground from a tough post last week. (9) TILLY THE FILLY four-year-old mare is just now back in racing shape and has room to move forward against a suspect bunch.

Race 12

(5) DON SWAN picks back up a top driver. The trotter dominated at this level a few weeks ago. (1) HELLO CHIPPER should be in line for a nice ground-saving trip up close. (9) ROCKIN H CHEERY O owns a decent burst of speed when timed right; use underneath.

Race 13

In a very tough race to gauge, (9) ELOCUTIONIST shows some decent efforts against similar and will offer a nice price. (1) DJ SUPREME owns only one win on the year but will be used aggressively against a weak field. (3) CELESTIAL DREAMS gets a negative driver change; use underneath.

Race 14

(4) MEADOWVIEW ARTY just missed at this level last week from a tough spot. (1) AISLING veteran trotter owns some back class and benefits form the best post. The 12-year-old is capable of a better effort. (3) SON OFA SPUR finished a good second at this level last week.

Race 15

(1) JOHNNY MAGIC owns a n easy win from this same spot a few starts back. (2) BIG BAD'S SHADOW sophomore pacer picks up a top driver and faces a weak field full of question marks. (3) SAM'S NOBLE DOCTOR might have gained some confidence with a win on the fair circuit but is probably best used underneath.

August Pitchers Report
By Marc Lawrence

With the MLB trading deadline officially closed, and the NFL preseason whetting our pigskin palates, the month of August sets the table for the stretch run of the baseball season. Which pitchers can we count on to satisfy our tastes, and which ones figure to sour our stomachs?

Take a look below.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of August.

On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in August, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each April over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s August list.

I’ll be back next month with September’s Good Month Pitchers.

Until then, as legendary singer and songwriter Neil Diamond would say, enjoy the hot August nights.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

Arrieta, Jake - 10-5 (6-3 A)

After being Clayton Kershaw-like for nearly 12 months, the Cubs starter has "regressed" back to just being among the best starters in baseball. Arrieta has a nearly 3-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio and only allows a base hit 70 percent of the time in innings pitched this season, among the finest in the majors.

Duffy, Danny - 11-4 (6-1 H)

After starting the season as a reliever, the Kansas City left-hander was forced back into the rotation based on need and he has responded. Since June, after a pair of starts, Duffy has put up an ERA of just over 3.00 and opposing batters have just a .289 on-base percentage against him.

*Gallardo, Yovani - 9-4 (5-2 A)

Not close to the same pitcher he used to be with Milwaukee, with ERA so far this season approaching almost two runs higher than career average (5.37 vs. 3.73). The lost velocity is to blame and secondary pitches have less bite. For Baltimore to win AL East, Gallardo has to find some of his old magic.

Greinke, Zack - 10-5 (5-2 H)

After being on the shelf with oblique injury since late June, Greinke is close to returning for Arizona if no reoccurrence were to take place after a rehab start or two this month. After pathetic start to season, the D-Backs prized starter has cut ERA by 2 1/2 runs and is close to career norms in all major categories. Elite starter.

*Hamels, Cole - 12-6 (8-4 H)

Having typical Hamels season, with low numbers across the board. In bigger picture, underrated high level hurler who has not been getting acclaim after Phillies fall, but has been ace with Texas. As usual, left-handed batters have no chance with .176 batting average and .287 slugging percentage.

*Iwakuma, Hisashi - 12-5 (7-1 A)

Not having normal season for Seattle, with hits allowed much higher than usual for Iwakuma. However, has won four of five starts and the Mariners are 10-3 when the righty has toed the rubber since May 20. With Felix Hernandez back, this pair could lead Seattle charge to postseason.

Milone, Tom - 7-3 (4-1 A)

Milone starts for bad Minnesota club and is inconsistent as ever. Of his 74 hits allowed in only 59 2/3 innings, 11 have gone the yard. Maybe he can keep the ball down and spot his pitches better like previous August’s.

*Sanchez, Anibal - 9-3 (5-1 H)

With decreased velocity and no action on breaking pitches, Sanchez ERA has been six or higher almost all season. Not sure if he can respond this month, with opponents having BA over .300 and owning a WHIP of 1.64.

*Strasburg, Stephen - 13-3 (8-1 H)

Only July 21st, Strasburg suffered first loss of entire season after 13 consecutive wins. Though the fastball is no longer in upper 90's all the time, the breaking pitches disappear from batter's view and he's been exceptional. If Strasburg has true to form month, he will have real shot at 20 wins in 2016.

Teheran, Julio - 11-5 (7-2 H)

Suffered lat strain in late July and has been a victim of no run support from bad Braves club with 2.81 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and opposing batters at only .205 batting average. Note: Teheran’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

Weaver, Jered - 12-5 (7-3 A)

Shell of his former self at 33. Never a hard thrower, Weaver's fastball only occasionally makes the upper 80's these days and his once dominating changeup is a pitch batter's wait on now with lack of variance of speed of pitches. Will blend good and really awful performances these days.

*Zimmermann, Jordan - 12-6 (8-3 H)

On July 24th had excellent rehab start and will be rejoining Detroit this month. After sensational start with Tigers, Zimmermann was tagged for at least five runs in four of his last five outings. Detroit needs the Zimmermann they had early in the season to have chance to catch Cleveland in AL Central.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Gray, Sonny - 5-11 (0-7 A)

Given Gray's troubles this month, his woes of all season are very likely to continue. Gray simply has been more hittable the entire season, permitting those with bats to hit almost 50 points higher than normal batting average permitted of .233. Note: Gray’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

*Hellickson, Jeremy - 4-11 (2-9 A)

Back of the rotation starter, Hellickson has largely performed better than expected for Philadelphia and as this article went live, he was rumored to be traded. His KW ratio is significantly higher at 4 to 1 compared to 3 to 1 for his career. Will he be able to maintain the rest of season?

Kazmir, Scott - 5-11 (1-7 A)

The Dodgers port-sider has 9-4 record, but his 4.41 ERA is still above career average of 3.98. Durability has been issue all season, with too many starts around five innings for what is supposed to be Los Angeles No. 2 or 3 starter.

Koehler, Tom - 4-13 (0-10 A)

Above average arm but always up or down and unless he pulls a Rich Hill, at 30 is not likely to change. An 8-8 record, 4.18 ERA and WHIP of 1.46, is about what we have come to expect from Mr. Koehler. Note: Koehler’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

*Miley, Wade - 5-11 (1-6 A)

Overrated lefty who does not miss many bats and fails to come anywhere close to averaging punch-out an inning. Strictly an innings-eater and provides nothing more than 50-50 chance to win.

Miller, Shelby - 5-11 (2-8 H)

Demoted to Triple-A in July after disastrous campaign. Miller hopes to regain confidence and repair mechanics that are really out of whack and return to Arizona yet this season.

Samardzija, Jeff - 5-13 (3-8 H)

After appearing as the No.3 starter San Francisco wanted for two months, Smards has returned to same old serviceable pitcher of the past and seen his ERA climb from 2.84 to present 4.30 heading into this month.

MLB roundup: Royals' Duffy earns ninth straight win
By The Sports Xchange

DETROIT -- Danny Duffy won his ninth straight decision with the aid of four solo home runs, including the first of Raul Mondesi's career, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-1 on Tuesday at Comerica Park.
Duffy (10-1) limited the Tigers to one run on three hits while striking out five in 7 2/3 innings. He has the longest winning streak by a Royals pitcher since Jeremy Guthrie won 10 straight decisions in 2012-13.
The breakthrough homer for the 21-year-old Mondesi came in his 19th game and 60th official at-bat.
Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer and Kendrys Morales also homered for Kansas City, which has won eight of 10. Gordon, who scored twice, stretched his hitting streak to seven games
Tigers starter Justin Verlander (12-7) allowed five runs -- three earned -- on four hits while striking out six in seven-plus innings.

Blue Jays 12, Yankees 6
NEW YORK -- Edwin Encarnacion and Russell Martin hit two-run homers in the eighth inning as Toronto rallied from a six-run deficit for a victory over New York.
The Blue Jays, held scoreless for the first 14 innings of the series, capitalized on a 42-minute rain delay that knocked both starting pitchers out early.
After getting the deficit to 6-4, Encarnacion followed a 12-pitch walk by Josh Donaldson by lining a 1-0 slider from Adam Warren (1-1) into the left field seats for his 34th home run and 99th RBI.
Troy Tulowitzki had four hits, including a two-run homer in the sixth and scored the tiebreaking run when Martin hit a 1-2 fastball pitch over the right field wall.

Red Sox 5, Orioles 3
BALTIMORE -- Mookie Betts homered twice Tuesday, including a tiebreaking two-run shot in the top of the eighth inning that gave Boston a victory over Baltimore.
Boston earned its fifth consecutive win and pulled into a tie with Baltimore for second place in the American League East. Both teams are a game back of Toronto.
Betts drove in all five Red Sox runs with a three-run homer and the two-run blast. He has hit eight homers against Baltimore this year, and he has three multi-homer efforts at Camden Yards.

Reds 6, Marlins 3
CINCINNATI -- Tucker Barnhart's grand slam highlighted a five-run first inning, and Anthony DeSclafani gave up two runs over six frames, lifting Cincinnati to a victory over Miami at Great American Ball Park.
DeSclafani (7-1) overcame an injury scare in the fourth inning when he limped off the field after being doubled off first base, but remained in the game.
He finished with two runs allowed on seven hits with no walks and six strikeouts in his second career start against the Marlins, the club he debuted with in 2014.

Indians 3, White Sox 1
CLEVELAND -- Jason Kipnis had three hits and Corey Kluber outpitched Jose Quintana as Cleveland beat Chicago at Progressive Field.
The Indians scored single runs in the first, third and seventh innings, and Kluber and two relievers made it stand up. Andrew Miller retired all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings, and closer Cody Allen pitched the ninth to pick up his 23rd save.
Kluber (13-8) pitched six innings, allowing one run and seven hits, with seven strikeouts and two walks. In seven starts since his last loss July 3, Kluber is 5-0 with a 1.65 ERA.
Quintana (9-9) also pitched six innings, allowing two runs and seven hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.

Dodgers 15, Phillies 5
PHILADELPHIA -- Chase Utley hit a grand slam and solo homer in his return to Philadelphia as Los Angeles battered Philadelphia.
Howie Kendrick went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer for the Dodgers, and Yasmani Grandal went 3-for-4 with a two-run shot. Both drove in three runs.
Los Angeles piled up 14 hits in support of rookie right-hander Kenta Maeda, who went six innings to extend his personal winning streak to four. He is 12-7 this season.

Twins 4, Braves 2
ATLANTA -- Ervin Santana got a victory against his former team and in the process helped Minnesota snap a seven-game interleague losing streak against Atlanta.
Santana allowed four hits over seven scoreless innings, Joe Mauer homered as part of a three-hit game and the Twins defeated the Braves 4-2 on Tuesday night.
The Braves swept a two-game series at Minnesota three weeks ago.

Rays 15, Padres 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay's bats have never been hotter, with five home runs and a season-high 15 runs in an easy victory over slumping San Diego at Tropicana Field.
In their last three games -- all wins -- the Rays have 35 runs, the most in any three-game stretch in the franchise's history. Tuesday's five home runs -- including two by first baseman Brad Miller -- came one shy of that franchise record.
The Rays chased Padres starter Edwin Jackson after only four innings, then tagged reliever Carlos Villanueva for another seven runs, all on home runs. Nick Franklin and Miller had two-run home runs in the fifth, Corey Dickerson added a solo shot in the sixth and Evan Longoria hit his team-best 27th, a two-run shot, in the seventh.

Cardinals 8, Astros 5
HOUSTON -- Tommy Pham and Jedd Gyorko slugged home runs and St. Louis turned a four-run sixth inning into an interleague victory over Houston at Minute Maid Park.
Pham went 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run home run while Gyorko produced three RBIs for the Cardinals, who extended their winning streak to three games. The offensive output provided support for left-hander Jaime Garcia (10-8), who labored into the sixth inning but lasted long enough to benefit from the rally.
Garcia allowed three home runs, solo shots to Alex Bregman in the first inning, Marwin Gonzalez leading off the third, and Jason Castro to open the sixth. He was yanked after Castro socked his eight homer 453 feet into the upper deck in right field, but the Cardinals had opened an 8-4 lead before Castro took Garcia deep.

Cubs 4, Brewers 1 (Game 2)
CHICAGO -- Jason Hammel allowed two hits over seven innings while Kris Bryant reached base three times, including a game-winning RBI single, as Chicago beat Milwaukee to complete a doubleheader sweep.
The Brewers lost two starters as they dropped 23 games behind the Cubs in the National League Central. Starting pitcher Chase Anderson and left fielder Ryan Braun both departed the second game with left leg injuries.
Hammel (13-5), who has not lost since July 1, carefully protected a 1-0 lead until the Cubs exploded for three runs in the sixth.

Cubs 4, Brewers 0 (Game 1)
CHICAGO -- Trevor Cahill tossed five shutout innings and earned a win in his first major-league start since April 2015 as Chicago posted a victory over Milwaukee in the opener of a doubleheader.
Cahill (2-3) came off the disabled list on Tuesday for the spot start and allowed just two hits while striking out three and walking a pair.
Aroldis Chapman entered with one out in the ninth inning with a pair of runners on and retired the next two batters for his fifth save with the Cubs and 25th this season.

Rangers 5, Athletics 4
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rougned Odor was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 10th inning as Texas rallied for a win over Oakland in 10 innings.
Texas trailed 4-2 going into the bottom of the 10th after the A's scored two in the top of the inning.
But John Axford (4-4) couldn't close the deal. He struck out Nomar Mazara before walking three-straight batters to bring up Carlos Beltran. Beltran tied the game with a two-run single to center as he matched his career high with four hits.

Mets 7, Diamondbacks 5
PHOENIX -- Noah Syndergaard threw 5 2/3 innings and added his third homer of the season to help lead New York past Arizona.
Kelly Johnson also homered, T.J. Rivera had four hits, and Jose Reyes tripled, singled and drove in a run for the Mets, who won for the third time in four games.
Yasmany Tomas homered for the Diamondbacks, who lost for just the third time in their past nine games.
Syndergaard (10-7) allowed four runs -- two earned -- on seven hits with two walks with eight strikeouts. He snapped a personal three-game losing streak.

Angels 7, Mariners 6
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Cliff Pennington hit a triple in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive Jett Bandy home with the winning run, giving Los Angeles a victory over Seattle in front of 37.546 at Angel Stadium.
Bandy, Jefry Marte and Albert Pujols each hit home runs for the Angels, who broke an 11-game losing streak, the longest in manager Mike Scioscia's 17-year tenure.
Pujols' homer was his 22nd of the season and the 582nd of his career, putting him within one of Mark McGwire, who holds 10th place all-time. The Angels' designated hitter now has 92 RBIs this year.

Pirates 4, Giants 3
SAN FRANCISCO -- Jung Ho Kang broke an eighth-inning tie with a two-out, two-strike solo home run, lifting Pittsburgh to a second straight victory over San Francisco.
The loss knocked the Giants out of first place in the National League West for the first time since May 10. The Los Angeles Dodgers, a 15-5 winner at Philadelphia, took over the top spot by a half-game.
Rookie Jameson Taillon kept the Pirates in the game with six effective innings and the Pittsburgh bullpen pitched shutout ball after that, allowing the National League wild-card hopeful to win for the fifth time in their last six games.

Rockies 6, Nationals 2
DENVER -- DJ LeMahieu continued his offensive surge. Nolan Arenado exacted a small measure of revenge. And David Dahl delivered a key pinch hit as Colorado beat Washington.
LeMahieu tripled home the go-ahead run in the fifth against Yusmeiro Petit (3-3) and finished a double shy of the cycle. He went 3-for-3 with a walk, giving him eight consecutive hits. He went 3-for-3 to raise his average to .342.
He trails Washington's Daniel Murphy by six points in the National League batting race. Murphy went 2-for-4.

Preview: Blue Jays (68-52) at Yankees (61-58)

Game: 3
Venue: Yankee Stadium
Date: August 17, 2016 1:05 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- Only once has a left-handed pitcher won 20 games for the Toronto Blue Jays.

J.A. Happ is getting close to becoming the second.

Happ can become the first 17-game winner in the major leagues Wednesday afternoon when the Blue Jays conclude a three-game series with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Toronto has had five pitchers get to 20 wins in team history and the only southpaw was David Wells who won 20 during the 2000 season. Like Wells, Happ is in his second stint with the Blue Jays.

Happ won 19 games and made 50 starts after Toronto obtained him from the Houston Astros in a 10-player deal on July 20, 2012. After he was 11-11 with a 4.22 ERA in 2014, Toronto traded him to Seattle for outfielder Michael Saunders but last November, the Blue Jays signed him to a three-year deal following two months with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Happ has approached 20 wins by going 10-0 with a 2.66 ERA in his last 11 starts. After allowing four hits and getting seven strikeouts in seven innings during last Wednesday's 7-0 win over the Tampa Bays, he joined Roger Clemens in 1997 and Roy Halladay in 2003 as the only Toronto pitchers to have a run as good.

Clemens and Halladay were 12-0 in 13 starts and both were 20-game winners. Jack Morris in 1992 and Pat Hentgen are the only other 20-game winners in Toronto history but all of those hurlers were right-handed.

"He's a different pitcher, he's a better pitcher," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "He's a new guy, he gets ground balls now, he never used to do that and that bails you out of some innings. And he also gets strikeouts."

Happ can achieve two things with a win Wednesday.

He can join Wells and Jimmy Key as the only Blue Jays left-handers to win 17 games. Key did it in 1987 and 1991 while Wells achieved it in 1999 and 2000.

Happ can also become the fifth Blue Jay to win at least 11 straight decisions. Clemens and Halladay share the record of 15 in 1998 and 2003 respectively while Dennis Lamp won 11 straight in 1985 and Clemens did so in 1997.

Two of Happ's victories have been against the Yankees, who are batting .206 against him in three starts. He allowed one run and seven hits in six innings April 13 in Toronto and, May 26 in New York, Happ allowed one run and three hits in a 3-1 win.

The Blue Jays will be looking to beat the Yankees for the ninth time in 12 meetings after storming back from a six-run deficit for a 12-6 victory Tuesday. After going scoreless off Michael Pineda through five innings Toronto hit four home runs off New York's bullpen following a 42-minute rain delay.

Russell Martin, who was in a 4-for-28 slump, homered in consecutive at-bats and got the tiebreaking two-run home run in the eighth after hitting a solo shot in the sixth. Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run home run, giving him 34 and 99 RBIs while Troy Tulowitzki had a two-run home run among four hits.

"It just felt like the momentum was shifting in our direction," Martin said. "When everybody gets that good feeling and is kind of anxious to get back up to the plate, it's a good sign. We definitely got a little bit lucky, we got Pineda out of the game. It looked like he would have his A game today, so just got to point to the sky and thank whoever's up there for helping out."

The meltdown by New York's bullpen pushed them 5 1/2 games out of the second wild card spot. Gary Sanchez homered twice while Pineda allowed four hits in five scoreless innings before the game changed drastically for the Yankees.

"It's unfortunate because Michael was really good tonight, I would've loved to have sent him back out there, but with what he went through with that shoulder, we just felt we couldn't do it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "His pitch count was around 70 and it was frustrating. I was hoping it would be a quicker rain delay, but when it got to be 45 to 50 minutes, it was frustrating."

The Yankees will hope there are no more drastic turnarounds against them Wednesday and hope CC Sabathia can follow Pineda's strong outing. He also will try to end a nearly two-month slump that has seen go 2-5 with a 6.41 ERA in 10 starts since June 22.

He is 7-9 and two of his losses have been in games started by Happ. He allowed two unearned runs in seven innings of a 3-1 loss at New York on May 26 and two earned runs in six innings five days later in Toronto.

Although Sabathia is 15-8 with a 3.20 ERA in 24 career starts against Toronto, the left-hander is 0-4 with a 3.60 ERA in his last four starts against the Blue Jays as the Yankees. While Sabathia has pitched decently in those games, New York's hitters have struggled by batting .189 (24-for-127) and getting two hits in 27 at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Preview: Padres (50-69) at Rays (49-69)

Game: 3
Venue: Tropicana Field
Date: August 17, 2016 1:10 PM EDT

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays scored a franchise-record 35 runs in their past three games, but as they seek to close out a three-game sweep of the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, the question is whether the run support will spill over to Chris Archer.

Tuesday's beneficiary, Blake Snell, was receiving a staff-low average of 2.55 runs in his starts before the Rays unloaded for a 13-1 win. Close behind is Archer, who has the next-lowest run support on the staff at 2.72 runs per start.

"What an offensive show we put on tonight," Rays manager Kevin Cash said after Tuesday's win. "That was fun to sit there and be a part of. Everybody, again, played a part. A lot of home runs and a lot of good at-bats. We've just got guys that are seeing the ball really well right now."

Archer (6-16, 4.39 ERA) leads the majors in losses -- former teammate James Shields of the Chicago White Sox is next closest with 14 -- and is in danger of becoming baseball's first 20-game loser since Detroit's Mike Maroth in 2003. He lost three of his last four outings despite making three quality starts in that stretch.

His mound opponent in the series finale, Padres left-hander Christian Friedrich (4-8, 4.84 ERA), is enduring a similar lack of support. San Diego was shut out in his last start, and the team produced six runs total in his past three outings.

Over his past 10 starts, Friedrich has allowed fewer than three runs just once, and he has allowed four-plus runs eight times. He is 1-7 with a 6.58 ERA in that span.

Friedrich, like Archer, has never previously faced his Wednesday opponent.

Padres manager Andy Green is more concerned about his team's offensive woes -- six total runs during a four-game losing streak -- than about Friedrich's work.

"We've had a complete roster overhaul -- we were built in the first half with Matt Kemp and Melvin Upton, guys that handle left-handed pitching very well," Green said. "Where we are right now, with the bulk of our power, you've got (Alex) Dickerson, (Ryan) Schimpf, (Travis) Jankowski, they're not nearly as ideal matchups as those types of guys. That's not an excuse, it's a reason."

The 35 runs by the Rays in three games trumped the 31 runs they scored in May in a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays. Tampa Bay has just one series sweep since -- taking three at home against the New York Yankees from July 29-31 -- but it has a chance for another against the Padres.

"We hit a ton of balls hard," said Rays infielder Brad Miller, who hit two home runs Tuesday and now has 18 since June 17, the second most in the majors during that span. "Even a lot of outs, they made some good plays on some balls.

"A lot of fun. I like how we kept it going. Nobody gave away at-bats. ... I'm just trying to have good at-bats."

San Diego has dropped seven of its past nine but hasn't been swept in a series since immediately after the All-Star break.

Preview: Cardinals (63-56) at Astros (61-58)

Game: 2
Venue: Minute Maid Park
Date: August 17, 2016 2:10 PM EDT

HOUSTON -- After having their offense smothered during a two-game interleague series against the Astros at Busch Stadium in mid-June, the Cardinals unleashed their balanced attack against the Astros on Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park.

For a third consecutive game, all victories, the Cardinals (63-56) relied on multiple contributors, with left fielder Tommy Pham and third baseman Jedd Gyorko belting their ninth and 18th home runs, respectively, while center fielder Randal Grichuk recorded a pair of extra-base hits. Gyorko smacked a three-run homer in the sixth inning for yet another crooked number by St. Louis during its modest streak.

Grichuk blasted a grand slam as part of a six-run eighth inning against the Cubs last Saturday. In the series finale at Wrigley Field on Sunday, Stephen Piscotty and Brandon Moss homered while Grichuk doubled as part of a five-run eighth inning.

"You hate to throw it on one guy's shoulders," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "I'm happy with the fact that we're spreading the wealth. It just keeps your team in it. In every game you know that if you're down a few you're two bloops and a blast from everything turning around and it seems like any guy can do it.

"All the way through our lineup we've got the ability with the long ball and that's a nice attribute for an offense to have."

Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez (10-7, 3.34 ERA) will make his first career appearance against the Astros and 10th interleague appearance. He is 0-2 with a 1.43 ERA against the National League.

Martinez leads the NL with 25 double plays induced and 1.64 double plays per nine innings. He paces the Cardinals with 10 starts of at least seven innings, going 6-1 with a 1.84 ERA in those outings. He was charged with three runs over six innings while receiving a no-decision in a 4-3 loss to the Cubs in Chicago on Aug. 11. Martinez is 16-7 with a 2.92 ERA on the road in 27 starts and 63 appearances.

Right-hander Doug Fister (11-7, 3.61 ERA) will start for the Astros (61-58). Fister beat the Cardinals 5-2 on June 14, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk with six strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings, his sixth victory in a seven-game winning streak.

Fister is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in four career games (three starts) against the Cardinals. Fister has just one victory in his last four starts.

Fister isn't the only Astros starter idling. Left-hander Dallas Keuchel endured another rough outing on Tuesday, allowing six runs on six hits over five innings. He struggled early, allowed two runs in the first inning, recovered to retire 12 consecutive batters, and then crumbled again before being chased in the sixth.

And while the sixth inning proved critical as St. Louis rallied from a 4-2 deficit en route to an 8-5 win, the early-inning woes have been a sporadic issue for Keuchel.

"I think getting into the game was tough for him," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said.

"I don't know what it's been the last three, four outings, the first inning has started off slow," Keuchel said.
