KEY STAT: Aston Villa registered only one away victory last term

EXPERT VERDICT: Five-time League Cup winners Aston Villa face a tricky first-round tie at Luton. The Villans will have had just three days to recover from a difficult trip to Sheffield Wednesday and Roberto Di Matteo may be keen to rotate his squad which gives the Hatters a chance of an upset.

RECOMMENDATION: Luton

KEY STAT: Cardiff have won only one of their last eight games

EXPERT VERDICT: Bristol Rovers host Cardiff in the League Cup and the newly promoted League One side can be a handful on home turf. Rovers won 15 of 23 matches on their way to promotion last term, while Championship outfit Cardiff won only five of 23 league away games and are hard to trust on their travels.

RECOMMENDATION: Bristol Rovers

KEY STAT: Leicester are unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League games

EXPERT VERDICT: Leicester could find it difficult to maintain a strong title defence this term but they can get off to the perfect start by beating Hull. Sometimes it can be tricky to face a newly promoted team due to the enthusiasm of the oppositions fans and players, but a cloud of negativity has enveloped Hull since they triumphed in the Championship playoff final.

KEY STAT: Everton won just three of their final 12 home league games last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Everton look likely to improve under the guidance of new manager Ronald Koeman but this is a tough opener. Friendly form can be taken with a pinch of salt, but Tottenham were hugely impressive in a 6-1 win over Inter and could hit the ground running after finishing last season in third spot.

KEY STAT: Burnley lost just twice at home last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Burnley are expected to struggle this season but can begin their top-flight campaign with a victory. The Clarets had a strong record at Turf Moor last term and look decent value against a Swansea team which picked up just 17 of their 47 points away from the Liberty Stadium in the 2015-16 season.

KEY STAT: Southampton scored at least twice in seven of their final nine league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Watford lost eight of their final ten league away games last season and this looks a difficult opener for a team who struggled for goals in the second half of the campaign. The Saints won eight of their final ten home games last term and can get off to a winning start.

At the Gate - Wednesday
By Mike Dempsey

Mother Nature has been pretty darn good to us so far at the Saratoga meeting, but that may change on Wednesday as there is rain in the forecast throughout the morning and into the afternoon.

If the forecast is correct we will likely see a wet track and be off the turf this afternoon. There are four races carded for the turf today along with the opener, which is a steeplechase event.

I am going to go with the forecast and today’s report is handicapped for an off track and off the turf.

The feature today is the $100,000 Birdstone which drew a field of six older runners that will go 1 3/4 miles on the main track. We do not see too many races at this distance.

I am going with the morning line favorite Turco Bravo who exits a couple of tries in graded stakes company, a sixth in the Suburban Handicap (G2) at 1 1/8 miles and two back a good effort in a runner up finish in the Brooklyn (G2) at 1 1/2 miles.

Through Monday’s card Chad Brown has the edge over Todd Pletcher in the trainer standings at the Spa 18-14. Brown has finished second to Pletcher in each of the past four years but could be on his way to his first training title. Pletcher is looking for his 13th at the Spa.

Brown has runners in two races today while Pletcher has starters in just one race.

Irad Ortiz Jr. is leading all jockeys with 28 winners, eight more than Hall of Famer John Velazquez with 20. Jose Ortiz is third with 18 while Javier Castellano is fourth with 16 winners.

Coming up this weekend at the Spa are the $200,000 Adirondack (G2) for juvenile fillies and the $500,000 Fourstardave (G1) for turf runners on Saturday.

The feature on Sunday is the $200,000 Saratoga Special (G2) for juveniles at 6 ½ furlongs on dirt.

I will head out to Arlington Park on Saturday and will analyze the big day that features the $1 million Arlington Million (G1) and $700,000 Beverly D. (G1), both Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” races.

Here is today’s second race (the opener is a steeplechase) from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 2 Clm $32,000 (1:33 ET)
#1 Making Havoc 9-5
#2 You Lie 2-1
#6 Miss Amalita 6-1
#5 Da Wildcat Girl 8-1

Analysis: Making Havoc set the early fractions and weakened to finish third last out here off a two-month break against Alw-2 optional claimers. The mare wheels back quickly her for the Nevin barn that is 17% winners with runners coming back off a 1-7-day break and learned from the best as she previously worked for Dutrow. The mare drops into an easier spot her tagged for $32,000 and owns solid early and mid pace numbers. She has a win over a wet track in three tries.

You Lie is also exiting a Alw-2 optional claimer where she carved out the early fractions before packing it in and weakening to finish fourth. She makes her third start since the Englehart barn claimed her for $16,000 three back out of a win. She beat Alw-1 foes in her first start for the barn. She fits well in this spot and figures to be right in the mix early.

Wagering
WIN: #1 to win at 8-5 or better.
EX: 1,2 / 1,2,6
TRI: no play

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 The Birdstone (5:40 ET)
#5 Turco Bravo 8-5
#6 Indycott 6-1
#3 Kid Cruz 2-1
#1 Old Time Hockey 3-1

Analysis: Turco Bravo tracked the early pace and weakened to finish sixth last out in the Suburban Handicap (G2). He drops into an easier spot here and won the ungraded Flat Out three back at Belmont park going 1 3/8 miles. The gelding ran second in this race last year, beaten 2 1/2 lengths behind repeat winner Tacticus. He has not won on an off track in his career but has run well, landing in the bottom half of the exacta in five of those trips.

Indycott faded to finish sixth last out against Alw-2 optional claimers in his first start off the claim by the Jacobson barn and off a two-month break. By A.P. Indy out of a Seeking the Gold mare, he may have enough pedigree to handle this distance. He has a strong off track pedigree and has landed in the money in three of his four trips on off going in his career. He beat $50,000 claimers here last summer on the main track here going nine furlongs.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 8-5 or better.
EX: 5,6 / 3,5,6
TRI: no play

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

# 4 COUSIN MARY 7/2
# 3 GREYSTONE LADYLUCK 9/2
# 5 NEVER ANY DOUBT 9/2

Really keen on the chance of COUSIN MARY taking down the winner's share today. Getting a good feel about this filly. Could surprise this time. Win statistic for this driver-trainer is a sparkling 29 percent - tremendous chance. Extremely profitable driver/trainer combo, with a 11 ROI when working their magic together. GREYSTONE LADYLUCK - Might be there at a fair price tag. Clearly one to keep in your exotics. NEVER ANY DOUBT - Clearly the class of the bunch with an average rating of 74. A nice choice. Racing competitively, achieved a very strong TrackMaster Speed Rating in her most recent race (69).

# 4 CHUKKAR 4/1
# 1 LUCK OF MACREA 5/2
# 5 HIGHEST HILL 9/2

We've got a vibe CHUKKAR is going to get the victory. Has really strong TrackMaster SRs and quite possibly has to be considered for a wager for this one. A good class horse cannot be forgotten. With an average class rating of 79 all signs say this is the one to beat. Should be given a look based on the competitive TrackMaster SR achieved in the last contest. LUCK OF MACREA - Starters win from this post at Saratoga Harness with better than average regularity, suggesting this tremendous wager. This gelding has been doing work versus some of the most competitive horses in this field of starters most recently. HIGHEST HILL - Take a look at this race horse's average speed rating of 74 and compare to today's class rating. Looks like a respectable wager. Could best this bunch, just look at the TrackMaster speed fig - 78 - from his last contest.

# 6 DANCE AFFAIR 3/5

# 4 QUINICHETTE 3/1

# 5 LOVELY SUNRISE 4/1

I've got to go with DANCE AFFAIR. The almost immediate return to the races points to a sound effort this time out. Is a strong contender based on figures earned recently under today's conditions. Reason to like this filly as she has in the saddle one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last 30 days. QUINICHETTE - Have to examine solely on class, with some of the most competitive class figures of this group of horses in this race. She has to be carefully examined given the formidable speed figures. LOVELY SUNRISE - Solid shot today on Lasix. Will likely be one of the leaders of the pack going into the midpoint of the race.

RECOMMENDED*CHOICES

# 5 UCANTHANKMELATER 15/1

# 3 FARLEY 3/1

# 4 KY. COLONEL 5/2

My pick in this contest is UCANTHANKMELATER and is a very good value wager given the line. If you gander closely, this one has some longshot potential. Had one of the top speed figs of this group in his last contest. With a nice class rating average of 92, has one of the most respectable class advantages in this group of animals. FARLEY - Respectable venture today with second time Lasix. Will probably compete solidly in the early pace battle which bodes well with this field. KY. COLONEL - May wake up with Lasix change (on Lasix) today. With a nice class rating average of 91, has one of the top class advantages in this field.

Delaware Park - Race #3 - Post: 2:15pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $17,000 Class Rating: 67

Rating:

#9 BIRD CALL (ML=5/1)
#7 PLEASE DON'T FLASH (ML=3/1)
#12 ATTICUS FINCH (ML=10/1)

BIRD CALL - Gelding has shown some pace. This shorter distance should be better for him. Was in a Maiden Special race at Laurel last out. That affair had a class rating of 80 and he is moving down right here. A certain serious competitor. PLEASE DON'T FLASH - I really like it when a horse's last prep is at the same distance or longer than today's contest like this one's is. Centeno comes to ride after getting to know the colt in the last contest. Three consecutive improved speed ratings (41-61-64) make this one a dominant contender. ATTICUS FINCH - This gelding notched a nice speed figure of 65 in his last event. That figure should be strong enough to prove victorious this time around. 42-51-65 are last 3 speed figs. Improving each time out is something he should do again in this event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 TIZ AWAY (ML=4/1), #11 MR. AWESOME ACT (ML=6/1), #3 GEEBOP (ML=8/1),

TIZ AWAY - Last viewed on Apr 30th at Tampa Bay Downs. Probably needs to do some racing into form. Difficult to bet on this vulnerable equine today. Make him show you something in a short distance contest before you play him in a race of 5 furlongs. Won't be easy for this racer to beat this field off of that last speed rating. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the likely underlays list. MR. AWESOME ACT - No picnic to bet on this less than sharp equine this time. Make him show you something in a sprint affair before you wager on him in a race of 5 furlongs. The fig last out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this animal as a vulnerable contender. GEEBOP - This gelding hasn't had any strong finishes in short distance events in the last two months. This vulnerable equine showed very liitle last time out finishing fifth. Can't expect a reversal of fortune today. The pace configuration just isn't too promising for this speed merchant. Many other ponies would have to scratch to promote his hopes.

Woodbine - Race #3 - Post: 7:45pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $24,100 Class Rating: 83

Rating:

#4 GREAT START (ML=6/1)
#7 D C LOVE BUG (ML=8/1)

GREAT START - I think this filly should run back to her winning race from May 13th, when she won a $20,000 Claiming race. D C LOVE BUG - I took a look at this mare's finishes. She's almost always in the money. Don't often see a lucrative ROI like +63. This jockey/trainer duet has done well together over the last year.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 FLOWER DEAN (ML=2/1), #2 FLASHY PATCH (ML=5/2), #5 BATTLE CASTLE (ML=7/2),

FLOWER DEAN - Never really did much at all last time out on Jun 19th. Hard to wager on in today's race. This filly notched a speed rating in her last affair which probably isn't good enough in today's event. FLASHY PATCH - This horse hasn't been hitting the board in either of her last two outings. This filly earned a speed rating in her last affair which likely isn't good enough today. BATTLE CASTLE - Don't believe this runner will do much running in today's race. That last speed figure was mediocre when compared with today's class figure.

RACE #9 - SARATOGA RACE COURSE - 5:18 PM EASTERN POST

The Birdstone Stakes

14.0 FURLONGS DIRT THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $100,000.00 PURSE

#5 TURCO BRAVO
#3 KID CRUZ
#1 OLD TIME HOCKEY
#6 INDYCOTT
This race is named for Birdstone, who is best known for winning the 2004 Belmont Stakes and has become a successful sire. Owned and bred by Marylou Whitney of Whitney family racing fame, Birdstone won the Champagne Stakes, a leading race for two-year-olds, at Belmont Park in 2003, but was not a factor in the first two Triple Crown races (finishing eighth in the Kentucky Derby and skipping the Preakness Stakes) and was a 36-1 longshot when he upset the overwhelmingly favored Smarty Jones, taking the lead in the final furlong, in the fastest Belmont since the advent of modern electronic timing (2002 was the first year times were kept to hundredths). His sire Grindstone won the Kentucky Derby in 1996 and was a son of 1990 Derby winner Unbridled. Unbridled was in turn sired by Fappiano, a son of Mr. Prospector, the tail-male ancestor of the vast majority of winners of Triple Crown races in recent years (22 out of the 24 races 1998-2005). Birdstone's victory represented the first in the Belmont for trainer Nick Zito, whose horses had finished second in that classic five times. In the winner's circle after the Belmont Stakes, his owners apologized to the connections of Smarty Jones for winning, as did jockey Edgar Prado. Here in the 6th renewal of this stakes event, #5 TURCO BRAVO, a Chilean-bred entry, is the only entry in this field not taking a step up in class this afternoon, is the overall speed and pace profile leader, and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" n four of his last five outings, including "POWER RUN WINS" in his 3rd and 5th races back. #3 KID CRUZ qualifies as a TrackMaster PLUS "PowerPony," and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in three of his last four outings, including back-to-back, "POWER RUN WINS" in his 3rd and 4th races back.

August Pitchers Report
By Marc Lawrence

With the MLB trading deadline officially closed, and the NFL preseason whetting our pigskin palates, the month of August sets the table for the stretch run of the baseball season. Which pitchers can we count on to satisfy our tastes, and which ones figure to sour our stomachs?

Take a look below.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of August.

On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in August, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each April over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s August list.

I’ll be back next month with September’s Good Month Pitchers.

Until then, as legendary singer and songwriter Neil Diamond would say, enjoy the hot August nights.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

Arrieta, Jake - 10-5 (6-3 A)

After being Clayton Kershaw-like for nearly 12 months, the Cubs starter has "regressed" back to just being among the best starters in baseball. Arrieta has a nearly 3-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio and only allows a base hit 70 percent of the time in innings pitched this season, among the finest in the majors.

Duffy, Danny - 11-4 (6-1 H)

After starting the season as a reliever, the Kansas City left-hander was forced back into the rotation based on need and he has responded. Since June, after a pair of starts, Duffy has put up an ERA of just over 3.00 and opposing batters have just a .289 on-base percentage against him.

*Gallardo, Yovani - 9-4 (5-2 A)

Not close to the same pitcher he used to be with Milwaukee, with ERA so far this season approaching almost two runs higher than career average (5.37 vs. 3.73). The lost velocity is to blame and secondary pitches have less bite. For Baltimore to win AL East, Gallardo has to find some of his old magic.

Greinke, Zack - 10-5 (5-2 H)

After being on the shelf with oblique injury since late June, Greinke is close to returning for Arizona if no reoccurrence were to take place after a rehab start or two this month. After pathetic start to season, the D-Backs prized starter has cut ERA by 2 1/2 runs and is close to career norms in all major categories. Elite starter.

*Hamels, Cole - 12-6 (8-4 H)

Having typical Hamels season, with low numbers across the board. In bigger picture, underrated high level hurler who has not been getting acclaim after Phillies fall, but has been ace with Texas. As usual, left-handed batters have no chance with .176 batting average and .287 slugging percentage.

*Iwakuma, Hisashi - 12-5 (7-1 A)

Not having normal season for Seattle, with hits allowed much higher than usual for Iwakuma. However, has won four of five starts and the Mariners are 10-3 when the righty has toed the rubber since May 20. With Felix Hernandez back, this pair could lead Seattle charge to postseason.

Milone, Tom - 7-3 (4-1 A)

Milone starts for bad Minnesota club and is inconsistent as ever. Of his 74 hits allowed in only 59 2/3 innings, 11 have gone the yard. Maybe he can keep the ball down and spot his pitches better like previous August’s.

*Sanchez, Anibal - 9-3 (5-1 H)

With decreased velocity and no action on breaking pitches, Sanchez ERA has been six or higher almost all season. Not sure if he can respond this month, with opponents having BA over .300 and owning a WHIP of 1.64.

*Strasburg, Stephen - 13-3 (8-1 H)

Only July 21st, Strasburg suffered first loss of entire season after 13 consecutive wins. Though the fastball is no longer in upper 90's all the time, the breaking pitches disappear from batter's view and he's been exceptional. If Strasburg has true to form month, he will have real shot at 20 wins in 2016.

Teheran, Julio - 11-5 (7-2 H)

Suffered lat strain in late July and has been a victim of no run support from bad Braves club with 2.81 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and opposing batters at only .205 batting average. Note: Teheran’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

Weaver, Jered - 12-5 (7-3 A)

Shell of his former self at 33. Never a hard thrower, Weaver's fastball only occasionally makes the upper 80's these days and his once dominating changeup is a pitch batter's wait on now with lack of variance of speed of pitches. Will blend good and really awful performances these days.

*Zimmermann, Jordan - 12-6 (8-3 H)

On July 24th had excellent rehab start and will be rejoining Detroit this month. After sensational start with Tigers, Zimmermann was tagged for at least five runs in four of his last five outings. Detroit needs the Zimmermann they had early in the season to have chance to catch Cleveland in AL Central.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Gray, Sonny - 5-11 (0-7 A)

Given Gray's troubles this month, his woes of all season are very likely to continue. Gray simply has been more hittable the entire season, permitting those with bats to hit almost 50 points higher than normal batting average permitted of .233. Note: Gray’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

*Hellickson, Jeremy - 4-11 (2-9 A)

Back of the rotation starter, Hellickson has largely performed better than expected for Philadelphia and as this article went live, he was rumored to be traded. His KW ratio is significantly higher at 4 to 1 compared to 3 to 1 for his career. Will he be able to maintain the rest of season?

Kazmir, Scott - 5-11 (1-7 A)

The Dodgers port-sider has 9-4 record, but his 4.41 ERA is still above career average of 3.98. Durability has been issue all season, with too many starts around five innings for what is supposed to be Los Angeles No. 2 or 3 starter.

Koehler, Tom - 4-13 (0-10 A)

Above average arm but always up or down and unless he pulls a Rich Hill, at 30 is not likely to change. An 8-8 record, 4.18 ERA and WHIP of 1.46, is about what we have come to expect from Mr. Koehler. Note: Koehler’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

*Miley, Wade - 5-11 (1-6 A)

Overrated lefty who does not miss many bats and fails to come anywhere close to averaging punch-out an inning. Strictly an innings-eater and provides nothing more than 50-50 chance to win.

Miller, Shelby - 5-11 (2-8 H)

Demoted to Triple-A in July after disastrous campaign. Miller hopes to regain confidence and repair mechanics that are really out of whack and return to Arizona yet this season.

Samardzija, Jeff - 5-13 (3-8 H)

After appearing as the No.3 starter San Francisco wanted for two months, Smards has returned to same old serviceable pitcher of the past and seen his ERA climb from 2.84 to present 4.30 heading into this month.

MLB roundup: Indians, Bauer top Scherzer, Nats
By The Sports Xchange

WASHINGTON -- Trevor Bauer bounced back from the worst outing of his career to pitch into the seventh inning, Jose Ramirez drove in two runs with two hits and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Washington Nationals 3-1 on Tuesday night.
Bauer (8-5) pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out four. Cleveland bench coach Brad Mills managed the team after Terry Francona was taken ill before the game. The Indians said Francona, who expressed discomfort during his pregame media session, was examined by a ballpark EMT and remained at Nationals Park.
The Indians' first visit to Nationals Park didn't start well as Cleveland was hitless against Max Scherzer (12-7) until Francisco Lindor grounded a single up the middle with one out in the seventh. Scherzer's errant pick-off throw allowed Lindor to go third, and Ramirez extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a double, giving the Indians a 1-0 lead. After Ramirez stole third, Lonnie Chisenhall's single to left made it 2-0.
After Jayson Werth's 14th homer -- off Andrew Miller in the eighth -- pulled Washington within one, Ramirez singled home Jason Kipnis in the ninth. Cody Allen pitched the bottom of the ninth for his 21st save of the season.

Red Sox 5, Yankees 3
BOSTON -- Dustin Pedroia ended a slump with two doubles and three RBIs, Andrew Benintendi stroked three hits in his Fenway Park debut and Rick Porcello tied for the major league lead with his 15th victory as Boston hung on to defeat New York.
Boston closer Craig Kimbrel walked four, including the last three batters he faced, and threw 37 pitches with a three-run lead before Matt Barnes came on and caught Mark Teixeira looking at a 2-2 pitch for his first save.
Pedroia, 6-for-31 during Boston's just-completed 5-6 road trip, doubled home two runs in the third and then doubled in another in the fifth. Benintendi, called up from Double-A during the road trip, singled and scored in the third, doubled home a run and then scored in the fifth, and singled in the seventh. He is 8-for-16 in his brief major league career.

Cubs 5, Angels 1
CHICAGO -- John Lackey allowed three hits in eight innings and Willson Contreras and Kris Bryant each added solo home runs as Chicago beat Los Angeles in the series opener for its eighth straight win.
Lackey (9-7) surrendered a first-inning home run and little else while walking one and striking out six in his fourth eight-inning effort of the season.
Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-3 and scored twice and Jorge Soler had two hits in his fourth consecutive start since coming off the disabled list.

Marlins 2, Giants 0
MIAMI -- Tom Koehler pitched seven scoreless innings to lead Miami over San Francisco. Koehler (9-8) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out six.
Giancarlo Stanton had the go-ahead RBI with a first-inning double that shattered his bat in half.
Brandon Crawford, who became just the sixth player in major league history to crack seven hits in one game when he accomplished the feat on Monday, was not able to deliver an encore performance. He went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, leaving four Giants runners on base.

Pirates 6, Padres 4
PITTSBURGH -- Gregory Polanco hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the fifth inning and Pittsburgh turned two misplays by the San Diego infield into four runs.
Chad Kuhl (2-0) overcame a two-run Padres first -- this one aided by a defensive mistake, as well -- while pitching effectively for six innings to get the win.
David Freese singled and scored during each of his first three at-bats, Sean Rodriguez drove in two runs during a spot start at shortstop and Francisco Cervelli finished off Pittsburgh's four-run fifth against Luis Perdomo (5-6) with an RBI double.

Reds 7, Cardinals 4
ST. LOUIS -- Billy Hamilton reached base four times, stealing three bases and scoring three runs as Cincinnati beat St. Louis.
Hamilton walked to lead off the seventh inning, swiped second, moved to third on a lineout and scored on Joey Votto's single up the middle to snap a 3-3 tie.
After St. Louis tied it in its half of the seventh on Brandon Moss' two-out RBI single, Hamilton had a hand in Cincinnati's three-run eighth. His infield single to second led to a Matt Carpenter error that allowed Tyler Holt, whose run-scoring double gave the Reds the lead for good, to scamper home from second. Hamilton then took second for his ninth steal in the last three games and came home on Zack Cozart's pop fly single.

White Sox 7, Royals 5
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Todd Frazier belted a three-run homer in the 10th inning to propel Chicago over Kansas City.
The Royals tied it in the ninth off closer David Robertson, who yielded a leadoff single to Kendrys Morales. Jarrod Dyson ran for Morales and stole second and scored on Alcides Escobar's two-out single.
Frazier untied it in the 10th by lining a first pitch offering from Kelvin Herrera over the left-field fence with Jose Abreu and Carlos Sanchez aboard for his 31st home run of the season, which is tied for the American League lead. Sanchez was running for Justin Morneau, who had his first four-hit game of the season.

Astros 7, Twins 5
MINNEAPOLIS -- Jose Altuve had four hits and Carlos Correa homered for Houston over Minnesota.
For Altuve, the American League's leading hitter, it was the seventh time this season he's had four hits in a game. He also scored twice and knocked in a run as Houston won for just second time in its last eight games.
Correa homered in the first inning and later added a two-run single in the decisive sixth, when the Astros turned a two-run deficit into a lead they didn't relinquish.

Diamondbacks 5, Mets 3
NEW YORK -- Michael Bourn delivered a go-ahead two-run triple in the seventh inning as Arizona beat New York. Brandon Drury (second inning) and Paul Goldschmidt (sixth inning) each homered and had two hits apiece for the Diamondbacks.
A two-run homer by Neil Walker gave the Mets a 3-2 lead in the sixth and left Zack Greinke in line for the loss, but the Diamondbacks scored three times -- all with two outs -- while sending eight batters to the plate in the seventh against Hansel Robles (5-4).
The rally made a winner out of Greinke (11-3), who was activated from the disabled list before the game after missing five weeks with a left oblique injury. Greinke allowed three runs, five hits and one walk while striking out six in six innings.

Rays 9, Blue Jays 2
TORONTO -- Evan Longoria had three RBIs, Logan Forsythe added a homer and two RBIs, Drew Smyly pitched six effective innings and Tampa Bay defeated Toronto.
Smyly (4-11) allowed six hits, three walks and two runs while striking out two in six innings for his second straight win.

Rangers 7, Rockies 5
DENVER -- Texas won its fourth straight game, scoring four times in the eighth inning with Elvis Andrus driving in the go-ahead run with a two-out single against Colorado.
The loss was the third straight and fifth in six games for the Rockies, who concluded a 3-5 homestand. The Rangers ended a 5-3 road trip and head home, where they are 34-17 and will play 30 of their final 48 games.

Braves 2, Brewers 1
MILWAUKEE -- Tyrell Jenkins allowed just one run over six solid innings, and Nick Markakis and Adonis Garcia hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the seventh inning to lead Atlanta past Milwaukee.
Jenkins scattered three hits and a walk while striking out three.
The only blemish on Jenkins' line was a solo home run by Ryan Braun to lead off the fourth. It was only the third earned run allowed by Jenkins (2-2) over his past three starts, spanning 18 innings.

A's 2, Orioles 1
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Rookie Zach Neal allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings in his second career major league start, and Oakland defeated Baltimore. Neal (2-1) gave up two hits, struck out one, walked none and threw just 72 pitches.
With A's starters Sonny Gray and Jesse Hahn on the disabled list and Daniel Mengden back at Triple-A Nashville, Neal moved from the bullpen to the rotation to help fill the void. Neal pitched three perfect innings before Adam Jones hit a leadoff homer in the fourth, his 22nd blast of the season.
After Neal exited, Liam Hendriks threw 1 2/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts. John Axford pitched a scoreless eighth, allowing no hits while striking out two. Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless ninth for his 24th save.

Dodgers 9, Phillies 3
LOS ANGELES -- Howie Kendrick, Yasmani Grandal and Justin Turner homered, and Los Angeles pulled into a first-place tie atop the National League West after a victory over Philadelphia.
The Dodgers won their fourth straight to match the Giants for the division lead. The Phillies lost for the third time in four games.
Kendrick drove in a game-high three runs, while Grandal homered for the second night in a row. Los Angeles starter Kenta Maeda (11-7) allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in five innings. Maeda also doubled and scored a run.

Mariners 6, Tigers 5 (15 innings)
SEATTLE -- Kyle Seager delivered score-tying hits in the eighth and 15th innings before Mike Zunino drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 15th as Seattle rallied to beat Detroit.
Seager's three-run homer in the eighth inning tied the score 4-4, and he added a one-out, RBI single in the bottom of the 15th, deadlocking the game at 5. An error by Detroit left fielder Justin Upton allowed baserunner Adam Lind to move to third, and Lind scored easily on Zunino's fly ball to center.
Victor Martinez gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead with a leadoff home run of Ariel Miranda (1-0) in the top of the 15th inning.

Preview: Giants (64-49) at Marlins (60-53)

Game: 3
Venue: Marlins Park
Date: August 10, 2016 12:10 PM EDT

MIAMI -- David Phelps, finally converted to a full-time reliever, was having the best season of his career.

Since the 29-year-old Phelps broke into the big leagues in 2012 with the New York Yankees, he has been yanked between the starting rotation (60 times) and relief work (101).

Once again, Phelps is back in a starting role and will take the ball in Wednesday's series finale against the San Francisco Giants.

This year, though, had appeared to be different. Phelps was re-cast -- for the first time in his career -- as an eighth-inning set-up reliever. And after three straight years of ERAs well over 4.00, Phelps had a 1.20 ERA in April, 2.57 in May, 3.46 in June and 3.65 in July.

True, Phelps' ERA was trending up, but he was still effective overall this season, and he was dominant at times. For example, he had 12.9 strikeouts per nine innings in May and a 14.6 ratio in July.

But instead of leaving him in that eighth-inning role, the Marlins tempted fate. First, they traded for San Diego Padres closer Fernando Rodney on June 30, putting him in Phelps' spot in the eighth inning. That pushed Phelps back to the seventh.

Next, the Marlins -- short of starting pitchers -- switched Phelps back to the rotation last week. Phelps made his 2016 starting debut last week, pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing four hits and one walk.

Phelps needs to go longer, of course, especially since the Marlins bullpen has been ineffective of late.

The Marlins bullpen blew a 5-1 lead in their first inning of work in Monday's seventh inning. Moving Phelps to the rotation appears to have weakened the bullpen without fully fixing the problem with the starters. That's a lose-lose for Miami.

Phelps, who has a 1.20 ERA in two appearances totaling seven innings in his career against the Giants, will face San Francisco right-hander Jeff Samardzija, who is 9-8 this season with a 4.40 ERA.

Samardzija, a 2014 NL All-Star, has struggled lately -- he has lost his past three starts.

Perhaps the Marlins will bring out the best in Samardzija. He is 4-1 with a 3.81 ERA in 16 career appearances, including seven starts, against the Marlins.

Samardzija hasn't pitched in Marlins Park since June 17, 2014, when he went six innings and allowed three runs, all unearned.

Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, who hit a broken-bat RBI double that one-hopped the wall in left field on Tuesday, will be rested on Wednesday. Stanton has a sore leg, according to Marlins manager Don Mattingly.

The Marlins will instead start Ichiro Suzuki.

"I think (Stanton is) alright," Mattingly said. "He had some soreness in the hip area today before the game. He jammed his leg pretty good on that catch he made (Monday). We were going to rest him (Wednesday) anyway."

Giants catcher Buster Posey, who caught 14 innings on Monday and rested on Tuesday, is expected to return to the lineup on Wednesday. He is also battling a finger injury that he sustained while sliding into a base on Monday.

The Giants are locked in a tight battle with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West.

"There's a lot of season left," Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford said. "If the division is tied, it's not going to ruin our season. We are just going to keep getting after it."
