Balmoral: Wednesday 7/30 Analysis
By Jeremey Day
DRF HARNESS

Race 6 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet (31 - 52 / $129.00): STONEBRIDGE ULTIMO (3rd)

Spot Play: IMNOTASONOFABEACH (5th)

Race 1

(1) DALI DOWN well bred gelding was excellent in his second lifetime start and has tons of room to improve. (5) DUPAGE'S Z TAM also went a big effort last out and looks to be a real nice 2-year-old. (9) MR PEARL could be a sleeper in the field if the freshman pacer can find a way into the race.

Race 2

In a really weak field (5) FLIGHT LIFTED has been facing better and gets a nice post with options. (2) ARLO GRAM is coming along slowly but has yet to show his best effort; threat. (1) DAVE'S ART will save ground before shaking loose late; use underneath.

Race 3

(5) STONEBRIDGE ULTIMO well bred 4-year-old trotter gets an enticing morning line and can get his picture taken with a similar effort to his qualifier. (3) FOX VALLEY SKYLAR has no lifetime wins but has started to turn a corner and was ran down by a much better opponent last out. (1) ACT OF VALOR gelding has been on the track five times this year and broke in three of them, however if he minds his manners he's probably the horse to beat.

Race 4

(1) SAND IN MY BIKINI doesn't look great on paper but did race much better at the track in his most recent start. The pacer will offer a big price and gets a good post to save some ground. (4) MEGYN HOTSPUR probably should be considered the horse to beat but the pacer loves burning cash; use caution. (7) BC'S FANCY DANCER gets a big driver change and has been racing gamely.

Race 5

In an excellent betting race (9) IMNOTASONOFABEACH was really good in his first start back off a long layoff and with some improvement will be tough to beat. (8) YANKLET HANOVER well bred filly put in an eye-catching mile last out but does face better. (6) ALWAYS TALKING should have been a winner last out at a huge price but the driver couldn't choose which way to go costing him. The pacer now makes his first start for new connections and is a huge threat at a price.

Race 6

In another wide open and evenly matched race (7) RIDE SALLY had no chance last out from a tough post but with some racing luck will be much closer turning for home. (9) JOYFUL GAME has the best closing ability in the race and could be the main danger late. (4) MY GIRL PIPPA adds lasix for the first time but could pull a big upset off some dull-looking lines with an effort like a few starts ago.

Race 7

(9) MASTER JEEVES gelding enters a red-hot barn and should improve greatly. ( 7) RUSSELL L was sneaky good last out from a tough spot; threat. (4) JO JO SPUR is always a threat at this level.

Race 8

(6) LOVERS HOLIDAY mare kicked home nicely last out finally showing some interest. The 5-year-old also gets a positive driver change and will offer a big price in an inconsistent field. (8) BLUE GEM has been better for the new connections and still could have more to offer. (5) SAND TARYN went a huge effort last out and just needs a smooth trip from a provisional driver to hit the board.

Race 9

(9) SHISWELL'S DELIGHT takes a huge drop in for a tag and will be driven very aggressively. (5) MAJESTIC ROYALE went a big trip first start in a new barn and looks ready to pace a big mile on the big track. (3) ASHES N DUST was awesome last out just missing after getting no luck with poor cover; threat.

Northfield: Wednesday 7/30 Analysis
By Ken Walters
DRF HARNESS
Race 8 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: MODERN WARFARE (2nd)

Spot Play: J F COOKIN (14th)

Race 1

(4) MAILMAN BOB rallied late in last after a strong uncovered effort in prior race. Seems ready to deliver his first win on the year. (7) DODGEME DISPISEME steps down a bit facing a modest bunch and a late burst of speed might be enough to gain the nod. (3) LIMA SEDUCTION has `bean' a long time between wins but that seems the norm in here. Comes off a scratched `sick' line and faces weaker.

Race 2

(6) MODERN WARFARE won last impressively and faces pretty much the same kind. (5) TYMAL TRITON was second best in last facing similar and his best makes him the one chasing the top one to the wire. (9) SMILING MAJOR need find a way through early traffic but would seem to be best of the rest of this lot if he gets away well.

Race 3

(9) VISION OF GLORY was the last one of this crew to notch a victory and that itself earns some respect. (1) ON YOU BRIT has the pole and has been close from inside posts in recent outings. (4) DOUBLE O JESSE is the freshest of the rest with only a handful of races this season and was a good late closing second best two back.

Race 4

(6) YOULL THINK OF ME was used to the lead in last but went down the road in good order winning impressively after he cleared the lead. Too sharp to argue with in field built to be beat. (1) DANCE WITH DAN tried the front end in last but tired. Can argue all the calls with the top one if he is tighter this evening. (2) LUMINOUS LOMBO A sat pocket second best in last which was an improvement and should stay around to be a threat.

Race 5

(2) ANASTASIA WHINNIE was second best as the second favorite in last; fits well this level. (9) STRIKING LIGHTNING rallied strongest in last and will be the main threat if he gets away well and finds cover along the way. (3) LETS JUST DANCE was empty when asked for speed in last but drops a bit and two back was a good effort when he brushed into contention but flattened out. He has the move but needs to amp it up at the right time.

Race 6

(3) SEPTEMBER HALL has been victimized by parked out efforts last two. Moves in and pretty much has no excuse tonight. (4) HIGH STAKES BANKER won two back with big finish facing slightly weaker but was outkicked in last. Best makes him a late threat. (8) ROYAL CAT has stepped up last two with improved efforts. Post hurts but pain doesn't always equal defeat.

Race 7

(2) FEATURE MATCHUP has won last two and three of last five. (1) JULIES DAVINCHIE was nailed at the wire in last but has the speed and the rail. (6) CODYTHECLOWN has been close in most recent and has won his share of races in brief career.

Race 8

(5) KNOCKOUT ART was a sick scratch in last but prior three were good efforts. Has plied his trade at Scioto this month facing better and was an impressive winner a few back. (2) UNCLE PAT comes in off a scratched lame line but fits very well this level. (6) R MASTER SCOTT is on a winning streak but steps up the ladder even further in very well matched field.

Race 9

(9) SAND ROYAL BLU has to only overcome the post to get involved early. He has been facing better in all recent and should be tough versus these. (1) ROCKIN H CHEERY O has the rail and looms as the main theat. (8) BEER LEAGUE is burdened with worst post of all but has late speed when right.

Race 10

(5) QUIK GROOM was used to the front in last and game way. Ships in after racing against better at Scioto and will be tough if he uses that speed the last three-eighths instead of the first three-eighths. (1) ICONIC STYLE closed well in last, steps up a bit but buys the rail. (3) IM JUST CRUISIN was nipped at the wire in front-stepping effort in latest and will be tough if just a little tighter.

Race 11

(4) OUR CROWN LAW N has been tightened nicely last two. Speed two back, parked the mile in last and well bet in both. (5) SHADY TOWN toured the track in latest after a game down the road two back win at 60-1. The truth will come out in here. (6) ROUNDING THIRD was parked the mile in latest and fits competitively in here.

Race 12

(2) HEZA RUBE was big in last with class drop. Faces similar and gets the nod. (5) BANDS SUPERSTAR charged home quickly to win going away. Steps up a notch and looms as the strongest threat. (7) BERLIN HALL was a beaten favorite two back and winning favorite in last. He is too sharp at the moment to ignore.

Race 13

(1) GUNNIN FORAFIGHT draws the rail after a strong and game victory. Hard to pick against as he faces same kind. (2) JP ORAZIO was outbattled by the top one in last. (4) ALLAMERICAN JUNIOR faces weaker as he comes in from The Meadows.

Race14

(7) J F COOKIN came wide with big moves in last few efforts winning two back. If he continues with such an effort the post will mean little. (2) HIT BY LIGHTNING has been good on or near the lead last few and is the one to beat. (6) SONICPEDIA has speed to argue the pace but has to overcome the post.

Race 15

(4) DO IT DOCS WAY was fast through the lane in last but had too many to pass. Should take home the bacon if he launches same late move. (2) SHAMS BIG GUY was second best in last from the two hole. Might be a trend worth following. (3) CMR WINDMACH finished well two back but failed to step it up in last. Fits competitively this level.

KEY STAT: Celtic have won four of their last six Champions League qualifiers away from home

EXPERT VERDICT: Polish champions Legia lost five of their six Europa League group games to nil last season and kicked off their title defence in similar style, going down 1-0 on the opening day to newly promoted Belchatow. Away wins in Europe have been hard to come by for Celtic but they’ve performed fairly well on the road at this stage of the tournament.

RECOMMENDATION: Celtic

KEY STAT: Trencin have kept just three clean sheets in their last 17 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Hull begin their first European adventure with a trip to Slovakia and it is one from which they should be able to claim their first victory. Steve Bruce looks to have moved well in the transfer market and the signings of attacking duo Robert Snodgrass and Tom Ince should give his increasingly dangerous team an extra dimension.

RECOMMENDATION: Hull-Hull double result

KEY STAT: Aberdeen have failed to score in just one of their last 21 away matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Derek McInnes’s side are likely to relish this daunting task and Real Sociedad may not have everything entirely their own way. The Spanish side have another three weeks before their season starts and while the gulf between the teams’ leagues is huge, the Dons can still make it difficult and could find the net.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: St Johnstone have lost two of their last 14 home games

EXPERT VERDICT: St Johnstone should not fear these opponents, who finished third in the Slovakian league last season but scored just 47 goals in their 33 matches and lost more than a third of their games. Saints striker Stevie May was ruthless last term with 20 goals and he could set them on their way to a first-leg advantage.

RECOMMENDATION: S May to score first

Race 1 - Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $13000 Class Rating: 79

FOR REGISTERED INDIANA BREDS FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE JUNE 30 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $8,000.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 7 VICTORIA BLU 5/1

# 5 OUR VALID TWIRL 2/1

# 2 LOVELY LEEANN 5/1

I think VICTORIA BLU is a respectable choice. Garnered a sound speed figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this affair. Has strong Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a bet in this competition. Prescott has recent ROI figures which make this one a strong wager. OUR VALID TWIRL - Ought to compete admirably in the early speed contest which bodes well with this group of horses. This mare has posted some nice finishing positions in her last few starts. LOVELY LEEANN - Ought to be used in the exotic wagers. She has garnered formidable figs under today's conditions and will most likely fare well against this field.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 9 MOUNT DIABLO 6/1

# 8 CONSOLIDATOR JOE 8/1

# 10 BLIZZARD BUDDY BEN 8/1

MOUNT DIABLO is my choice. Recorded a sound Equibase Speed Fig in the last race. Can run another good one in this race. CONSOLIDATOR JOE - Demonstrates the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 89 Equibase Speed Fig which is one of the top in this group. Is tough not to consider given the company run in as of late. BLIZZARD BUDDY BEN - Is a solid contender based on figs garnered lately under today's conditions. This gelding looks like a longshot play.

#6 MAXX THE GIANT (ML=7/2)
#9 ROMAR SUCCESS (ML=5/2)

MAXX THE GIANT - This horse has the speed, and no one may be able to keep up with him. Average class figure is tops in this group. I think that is a big advantage for a race on the turf. Equibase speed figures on the grass point to this thoroughbred as a legit contender. Has the best in the field for this dist/surf. ROMAR SUCCESS - This gelding is in nice form. Ended up second on July 17th. I like the piece of information that this gelding's last rating, 92, is tops in this bunch.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 NUMBER FIVE (ML=3/1), #7 SUN SPOTS (ML=8/1), #3 LASSIE'S REWARD (ML=8/1),

NUMBER FIVE - I foretell disappointment for this animal in this event. SUN SPOTS - 8/1 odds isn't enough for this horse when checking the most recent efforts. LASSIE'S REWARD - Quite unimpressive speed fig last time out at Santa Anita at 1 mile. Don't believe this questionable contender will improve too much in today's race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Have to go with #6 MAXX THE GIANT on the win end if we get at least 7/5 odds

#5 CANTCATCHTHEGROOM (ML=5/1)
#2 HOT TIN ROOF (ML=3/1)

CANTCATCHTHEGROOM - You always have to be on the patrol for profit making jock/trainer combos; we have it right here. HOT TIN ROOF - I undeniably see good things for this mount right here.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 COOPER'S CRESCENT (ML=7/2), #1A RETALIATE (ML=4/1), #1 SUNDAY DINNER (ML=4/1),

COOPER'S CRESCENT - When examining today's class rating, he will have to notch a better speed rating than in the last race to be competitive in this dirt sprint. RETALIATE - The speed fig last out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's event. Mark this mount as a likely underlay. SUNDAY DINNER - 4/1 is just too low of a price to take on most any thoroughbred that has run poorly in back to back races around the track. This less than sharp equine ran a somewhat easily forgotten speed rating last time out. She shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably get beat in today's race running that figure.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Go with #5 CANTCATCHTHEGROOM on top if we're getting at least 7/5 odds

# 2 STORMONT WIZARD 8/5

# 4 GREAT MAGIC 5/2

# 6 MUSCLES ALL OVER 6/1

STORMONT WIZARD will not be denied the victory today. Has very good TrackMaster Speed Ratings and quite possibly has to be considered for a wager in this one. Many analyzers will recognize the excellent TrackMaster Speed Rating in the last race. Stacks up against any horse in this grouping. Zeron knows this harness racer well. Fantastic in the money results when in the sulky. GREAT MAGIC - This standardbred could get the triumph here beginning from the Grand River Raceway 4 hole. Has the look of a profitable play, averaging a nifty 63 TrackMaster Speed Rating. MUSCLES ALL OVER - This gelding getting the victory wouldn't be impossible, a chance.

# 9 MINDALE'S SMILE 6/1

# 4 MARIE THE ARTIST 5/2

# 1 CRAZY LUV BUG 3/1

All signs point to MINDALE'S SMILE for the pick. Not many knocks against this fine animal, let's give her a shot. Has a clear-cut shot in this one, if she can repeat her back racing class. When Simons drives this horse you can bet they'll be in the top 3, percentages show them there 100 percent of the time. MARIE THE ARTIST - Great driver/conditioner, winning 29 percent of the time. Should be supported as a tremendous bet. The number crunching team keenly points out that when Lare trains this race horse, the odds of finishing hitting the board go way up. CRAZY LUV BUG - Could dominate this field of horses, just look at the TrackMaster speed fig - 77 - from her last showing. When the trainer Robinson puts Kakaley up for the drive really strong things happen. All you need to do is look at the 21 win percent.

At the Gate - Wednesday
By Mike Dempsey

Monday was a washout with the rains forcing the turf races on to the main track for the second day in a row. With the scratches, it turned into a chalky day.

We had four winners on top on the nine race card, but the prices were puny: $3.80, $3.70, $3.90 and $3.40.

However, the early Pick 5 with a reduced takeout still paid well despite all the chalk. I had three winners on top and my second choice won the other two races, the winners paying $3.90, $3.40, $4.20, $7.30 and $3.80. The $1 Pick 5 paid a decent $112.25. The early Pick 4 paid just $44.25.

We should be back on turf today although there is a chance for a few isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon.

The feature for Wednesday is the $100,000 Coronation Cup, a 5 ½ furlong turf sprint for three-year-old fillies. Nine will go to the post, although a pair is cross-entered in a race on tomorrow’s card so we could be down to seven.

The race is top heavy with early speed and is a tricky race to handicap. I am going with the Todd Pletcher trained Elena Strikes who will be making her turf debut. Pletcher is off to a strong start at the meeting, with 10 winners from 27 starters with six second place finishes and four third place finishes. He is seeking his 11th training title at the Spa.

Here is today’s second race (the opener is a steeplechase) from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 2 Md $40,000 (1:00 ET)
4 Confessa 10-1
5 Brandini 3-1
6 Bella Fachi 6-1
3 On a Snowy Evening 5-1

Analysis: Confessa tries dirt and drops in for a tag for the first time here after getting outrun in both starts on grass. The filly catches an easier spot here and seems more suited pedigree wise for the main track. The filly is by Repent out of an Awesome Again mare that has dropped four other foals to race, all winners including one stakes winner, top earner Baffle Me ($427,956). She should be able to handle nine furlongs and she is in light with the bug.

Brandini acted up and broke through the gate and then ended up no match for a 13 1/2 length winner in a runner up finish last out as the beaten favorite. She has now been the beaten fav in 4 of her 7 career starts with four runner up finishes. This is just her second for a tag and she has enough pedigree to handle the extra ground. She is by E Dubai out of a Behrens mare, her first foal to race. She should be ready for a top effort in the third start off the bench for the Bond barn.

Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 9-2 or better.

TRI: 4,5 / 3,4,5,6 / 2,3,4,5,6

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 The Coronation Cup (4:42 ET)
10 Elena Strikes 4-1
5 Scatcapade 5-1
3 Burn Control 6-1
7 Stars Above Me 5-1

Analysis: Elena Strikes is coming off a gate to wire score against Alw-2 foes on the main track at Belmont Park. The filly makes her turf debut here for the Pletcher barn that is 14% winners moving runners from dirt to turf, on the low side considering the barn's numbers in most other categories. The filly is out of the dirt stakes winner Ticket to Houston ($147,150 ) who has dropped eight winners including one turf winner and a couple of stakes winners, top earner Runway Model ($725,598). With this race top heavy with early speed Johnny V. should get a good tracking trip from just off the pace here and the filly has shown an ability to rate.

Scatcapade stalked the early pace and did not have enough punch left late in a fourth place finish going seven furlongs on the turf against Alw-1 foes. Two back going six furlongs she made a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot behind Go West Marie, who won the Cal bred Fleet Treat at Del Mar on July 26. The cut back to 5 1/2 furlongs is a concern and her trainer Clement noted that this distance may be too short for her, but she will get a great pace set up and should be rolling late.

Burn Control is perfect in two starts on dirt and makes her turf debut here for the DeMasi barn. She crushed maidens in her debut at Philly and then dueled through sharp early fractions an after giving up the lead came back to beat Alw-1 foes in her last outing. She has a solid turf pedigree, by Bernstein out of a Pivotal mare that has dropped one turf winner. The barn is showing just a 1 for 31 mark moving runners from dirt to turf. The filly has some serious early zip and looks as if she may get overlooked on the tote here.
