Balmoral: Wednesday 5/28 Analysis + Pick Five ticket
By Jeremey Day
DRF HARNESS

Race 1 - $40,000 Guaranteed Pick Five Pool ($10,104 C/O)

Race 6 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Jeremey’s 50 cent Pick Five Ticket (Race 1):

2 / 1,4,5,7 / 1,2,5 / 8 / 3,4,5,6,7,8 = $36

Best Bet (17 - 26 / $73.40): CRUELLA DE VILLE (4th)

Spot Play: FOX VALLEY VETO (7th)

Race 1

(2) PARKLANE SPARKLE well bred filly has a ton of potential and just needs to stay pacing to hit the top spot. (3) GET THE TERROR comes off a nice-looking qualifier and finds an inexperienced field. (6) SANDCASTLE GIRL three-year-old makes her career debut for a trainer that sends them ready off the bench.

Race 2

(4) B MAN went a big effort just getting picked off by a very talented rival last out. The 4-year-old stallion might have turned a corner. (5) ROYAL TABS filly hasn't come back to her sophomore year quite right, however the 3-year-old could be ready for an improved effort. (7) NESSIE'S BOY is two for two on the year but could need more against better.

Race 3

(5) CARNOUSTIE made an unfortunate break last out right as the mare was timing the gate to leave for position. The pacer has beaten tougher and should be up for a much better effort than last. (2) KITTY O'BRIEN is starting to heat up unleashing a big brush first over last start. The mare is one dimensional and needs some pace to close into. (1) ACT OF MAGIC wasn't the same last out despite the win. The 5-year-old pacer goes for new connections but could be on the downswing.

Race 4

(8) CRUELLA DE VILLE well bred filly makes her second career start off a nice effort. The 3-year-old should be much sharper with a start under her belt. (9) LIL WILLIE J trotting colt has showed good gate speed in his brief career and should get a good spot out of the gate. (10) QUAZE closed up nicely in his most recent qualifier and will be ready to go in his first lifetime start.

Race 5

(8) WELL DUNE was a game winner last out against a similar field. (7) BIRD IN FLIGHT is close to turning it around for the new connections; threat. (3) SUNSET DREAMER should have been much better last out but could hit the top spot in a fairly wide open field with a good trip.

Race 6

(8) KENNANS NANCY LEE mare should offer a big price off a layoff and gets sent out for new connections for the first time. (7) FOX VALLEY SWIFT mare looks to be pacing faster than most of the field but gets a low percentage driver; use caution. (1) TOPVILLE BRIDGETTE mare goes for red hot connections and looks to be in line for a good trip.

Race 7

(3) FOX VALLEY VETO would have been an easy winner first time out but made a break popping the pocket. The sophomore trotter should be primed for a big effort second start back. (5) VIN has a big closing move if the 3-year-old can stay trotting; threat. (6) GRAY N CLOUDY makes his third start back off a layoff and showed a lot of ability last out against older.

Race 8

(1a) LOOK MA NO HANDS had a ton of pace last start from a tough post. The pacer will be flying early but needs to ration out his speed for his best chance. (7) JUSTLIVINTHEDREAM looks to be in a big-time funk but finds a weak and inconsistent field; threat. (5) ROCKME AMADEOUS is good at picking up the pieces late but needs the right set up.

Race 9

(5) TRULY WILD nice-looking gelding has yet to put it all together but could be on the right track for a new barn. (4) PRAIRIE THUNDER needed his first start and will be much tighter second start back; big chance. (1) AMERICAN PORTAIT the connections have been hot recently bringing in some nice-priced winners.

Northfield: Wednesday 5/28 Analysis
By Ken Walters
DRF HARNESS

Race 8 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: GALE FORCE HANOVER (8th)

Spot Play: ALLAMERICAN CHEER (11th)

Race 1

(5) ALADY FOR SURE has been tightened enough and faces quite the beatable field. (7) THAT WAS YOU qualified with winning effort and might be ready to roll first out this year. (2) SMOKEN STORMS has absolutely nothing to offer but it is slightly more than the rest of this sorry band has to offer.

Race 2

(1) ROCK ON TRIGGER has the pole for third time in last four and has been second twice from same spot. Just seems to be a step sharper than these. (4) HARD TO ROCK THIS can complete the `rock solid' exacta with similar effort to last time out. (5) MISS RILEY did not like the post two back can land a share from here.

Race 3

(2) SAND SONYA made a bold wide brush to gain a slight lead but was nailed on the wire. Same move crushes these. (1) BET ON BLUE makes debut after two qualifiers and would not have to be a tiger to surprise these. (3) URBAN M has to stay flat to maximize his chances.

Race 4

(6) WHAT DO YOU WANT gets the nod in wide open affair. Just missed extending his win streak to three in last week's near miss and best puts him back on track. (4) DUCHESS OFNORMANDY seeks fourth in a row and is the one to catch. (3) ROCKIN H CHEERY O has been banging at the door in all recent and can only improve with the inside post.

Race 5

(4) WHERE U WAS JAY had some traffic problems in last. Should be in better striking position tonight. (1) PAPA GRANDE has the pole and will have to be caught. (2) SOAKING UP THE SUN stayed flat in last and roared home. Should be the major late factor if he stays on gait.

Race 6

(2) MYSTERY RINGER was first over and tired three back, rallied well from bad post two back and was up close to the pace only to tire in last. Should get some cover and close strong enough to take the prize. (7) SMALLSREED has speed but will have to overcome the post. (9) T P MAXIMUS should get away well from here with speed inside of him and be a late factor on best.

Race 7

(3) BIG HARRY DEAL was parked from his life in last and has to get it done tonight. (9) WILDCATS TERROR will have to follow the top one out of the early traffic but qualifier two back points him out. (5) SOUTH PARK KID was unable to overcome post eight in last and just toured the track. Watch the board, he seems to go better when bet like he is going to go better.

Race 8

(2) GALE FORCE HANOVER will be short but sweet. (9) GIRLY LOCKS broke in last from similar post. Won last time off a break line and has to be considered. (3) TUSCARORA BLUEROAN showed some improvement in last and has a license to improve more second time out for the new barn.

Race 9

(1) NO SHENANIGANS has the pole, speed and is sharp as a tack at the moment. (2) THREE ROCK NIGHT has speed enough to stay close throughout. (7) GO SMARTY BRAND will have to overcome the post but hits the board on a regular basis.

Race 10

(1) JP ORAZIO was parked the mile in last and drew away. Cannot look past him in here. (6) CALL HIM CLING has been well bet in recent and hit the board all four since the qualifier. (2) SEE YA LATER DUDE was used pretty hard in last and should be tighter this time around.

Race 11

(7) ALLAMERICAN CHEER closed strongly to finish second three back, tired off a rail trip in ext but came back with good finish last time. Old bay mare seems primed for winning effort. (2) CONDOR HALL was a just-miss second two back from the pocket and toured the track in last. Seems capable on best and should go well. (9) JAY JAY REDSKY has been a well-bet winner in two of last four and looms large with right trip.

Race 12

(7) DR JACKS SHACK takes a modest drop in company and get the nod. (9) CASIMIR LUCKYNUTZ tries post nine for third straight race and might surprise on best. (4) BROTHER BUD has only one win last two seasons but moves in off a bunch of bad posts and a piece of the action looms for this vet.

Race 13

(3) I RECKON SO has the speed and will be the one to catch. They may not be so easy but this one has been sharp in two of last three. (1) DIAMONDS REVENGE has the rail and looms as large stretch threat from the pocket off two second place finishes. (5) WORRIES STAY SMALL won last and faces slightly better. A win is hard to look past with this kind.

Race 14

(2) LIGHTNING LUCK has no excuse from here. Two and three back were uncovered adventures that ended poorly and last was from outside post. Will go well from here. (7) EAGLE FLIGHT brushed from the pocket in qualifier and got away quickly for convincing win. May need a tightener and a better post. (3) LITLE BIT SIDEWAYS moves in off a couple of post seven outings and will be a stretch threat.

Race 15

(6) MARTINAS QUEEN made a long and strong rally as the winner stormed away to a huge lead, kept coming and missed by less than one. (5) REL POSTAGE DUE pulled the pocket in last and roared away tired but lasted as the top one closed in on her. (1) LEGACY CHIP will be ideally placed to pick up the pieces if either of top two falter.

Race 16

(1) BEANS AND WEENIES made a lot of noise in last but needed one last burst to get it done. (5) SKEDADDLE HANOVER put in a huge parked the mile effort in last and could be the one standing if the top one runs out of gas. (4) TEVENAY HALL won qualifier like he meant it. Oldtimer should nab a win soon.

KEY STAT: Scotland have kept four consecutive clean sheets.

EXPERT VERDICT: Nigeria have been presented with a good opportunity to progress from their group in Brazil, but their preparations may suffer a hiccup against a resurgent Scotland at Craven Cottage. Gordon Strachan’s men have prevented Poland, Norway and USA from scoring in their last three international friendlies, and it would be no surprise to see them hold the Super Eagles to a stalemate.

RECOMMENDATION: No goalscorer

KEY STAT: Turkey have won five friendlies in a row

EXPERT VERDICT: Turkey are an improved outfit since reappointing Fatih Terim as manager, winning eight of their last nine matches, and should have too much for World Cup rank outsiders Honduras. The Central Americans lack quality, while the Turks were impressive in their 2-1 victory over Ireland on Sunday.

KEY STAT: Peru have kept clean sheets in six of their last seven friendlies

EXPERT VERDICT: Chile’s slick victory at Wembley in November illustrated the dangers of underestimating South American opposition, and Peru are another solid unit with the potential to frustrate. England have scored more than two goals in a home friendly just once since 2010, and the value bet could be on another low-scoring encounter

RECOMMENDATION: England 2-0

Delaware - Race #1 - Post: 1:15pm - Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $15,000 Class Rating: 91

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#5 WARRENSBURG (ML=6/1)
#1 KEY TO A CURE (ML=2/1)
#3 HYARIMA (ML=4/1)

WARRENSBURG - I know he'll be way back, but he's got a fabulous move at the top of the lane. KEY TO A CURE - Has discovered a good situation this time around. HYARIMA - Changes tracks from last out at Fair Grounds to here. Multiple wins at different tracks tell me this one likes to switch it up, so that's a good sign.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 TRUMPETER SWAN (ML=3/1), #7 WOKEUPONHOMEPLATE (ML=8/1), #4 EIGHT RIDERS (ML=8/1),

TRUMPETER SWAN - This gelding ********** a speed fig in his last race which likely isn't good enough in today's event. WOKEUPONHOMEPLATE - Last effort was too good. Not too far of a reach to expect a 'strong performance bounce' today. EIGHT RIDERS - Hard to put your money on the win end of any horse that finishes second and third as often as this thoroughbred does. When looking at today's class rating, he will have to notch a better rating than last out to battle in this dirt route.

Preview: Reds (22-28) at Dodgers (29-24)

Game: 3
Venue: Dodger Stadium
Date: May 28, 2014 10:10 PM EDT

Andre Ethier is on a tear, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are surging.

Ethier looks for another impressive offensive display as the Dodgers go for a sixth straight home win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night.

Ethier is hitting .359 with nine RBIs in his last 12 games, with half of his 14 hits in that stretch going for extra bases. Each of his three hits in this series fit that criteria, as he had a homer and a double while driving in a season-high four runs in Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Reds (22-28).

That should be enough to keep him in the lineup, especially with Carl Crawford likely headed to the disabled list with a sprained left ankle suffered while chasing down a double in the left field corner Tuesday.

The Dodgers (29-24) have held Matt Kemp out of the lineup for five games while he learns to play left. The team questioned his ability to remain in center after offseason ankle surgery.

Manager Don Mattingly has shuffled the outfield, using Ethier, Crawford, Kemp, Scott Van Slyke and Yasiel Puig, the last of which has reached base in 28 straight games.

"It's uncomfortable, and it's a tough spot to be in," Ethier said. "I guess this is a situation where too much of a good thing is not necessarily good. But you've got to commend everyone for being professional and handling it as well as they can."

Los Angeles has won six of eight overall and is 7-1 in its last eight home meetings with Cincinnati.

Clayton Kershaw (3-1, 3.49 ERA) has a 2.78 ERA in eight career starts against the Reds, but just a 2-1 record as he's been backed by an average of 2.8 runs. He allowed one run in eight innings of a 2-1 win in his most recent home start against Cincinnati on July 26.

This time, the left-hander is facing a Reds team that is hitting .224 during a season-high four-game losing streak. Cincinnati has totaled 13 hits with 24 strikeouts in this series.

Kershaw is coming off Friday's 2-0 victory at Philadelphia, striking out nine while allowing two hits in six innings after returning from a 43-minute rain delay in the fourth. It marked a return to form for the ace following his shortest outing of the season May 17, when he was pulled with two outs in the second after allowing seven runs in an 18-7 defeat at Arizona.

The Reds' four-game slide includes losses to Hyun-jin Ryu and Zack Greinke in this series, and they lost 4-0 to St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright on Sunday.

"You have to figure something out," third baseman Todd Frazier told the team's official website. "Be that athlete that you know you can be and how you used to play when we're little. I used to scream and yell and get excited. Bring that emotion."

Frazier has gone 3 for 17 with seven strikeouts in the last four games. He's 1 for 9 versus Kershaw.

Homer Bailey (4-3, 5.34) will look to carry his home success to the road. The right-hander has won his past three starts at Great American Ball Park with a 2.95 ERA, but he's gone 0-2 with an 8.04 ERA in his last three away games.

He was solid at home Friday, yielding three runs in six innings of a 5-3 victory over St. Louis.

Bailey has posted a 2.05 ERA while winning two of his last three outings at Dodger Stadium and was the hard-luck loser opposite Kershaw on July 26. He allowed two runs in seven innings.

Bailey has held Ethier hitless with six strikeouts in 18 at_bats.

Bailey on the mound means runs on the board
By JUSTIN HARTLING

The Cincinnati Reds will send Homer Bailey to the mound against the Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday. Over bettors should be overjoyed with this news.

In Bailey's 10 starts this season, the total has been topped eight times. Bailey has a 5.34 ERA and has given up at least four earned runs five times this season.

Yankees faltering with Kuroda on the mound

Hiroki Kuroda is having a mediocre year on the mound, sporting a 4.55 ERA and a 46/11 K/BB ratio. The Yankees are surely not inspired with Kuroda on the mound either as they have dropped five of his past seven starts.

The Yankees losses mount-up even more when Kuroda takes the mound at a visiting park, sporting a 1-9 record in Kuroda's last 10 road starts.

Cubs unveil Wrigley upgrade renderings
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

The Chicago Cubs unveiled new images for Wrigley Field improvements that will cost around $375 million.

The improvements include the construction of hundreds of new seats, five more premium clubs, seven new outfield signs and relocating the original bullpens down the foul lines underneath a revamped bleacher section.

If the Commission on Chicago Landmarks approves the plans at a June 5 meeting, the Cubs plan to start construction after the All-Star break on an entertainment plaza outside the 100-year-old facility's main entrance.

Nationals will skip rookie starter after rainout

WASHINGTON -- In a logical move, the Washington Nationals will keep a veteran pitcher on regular rest and skip a rookie after their game with the Miami Marlins was rained out Tuesday night.

The postponed game will be made up in September.

Jordan Zimmermann, who has made 123 career starts, will start Wednesday as scheduled in the series finale against the Marlins. Zimmermann is 3-2 with a 3.95 ERA in 10 starts this season, and the Nationals are 7-0 in games that he started against the Marlins since July 2012.

Rookie Blake Treinen (0-2, 1.56), who has made two career starts, was slated to pitch Tuesday. Instead, he will be used out of the bullpen the next few days.

"We will stay on our normal rotation from tomorrow on," Washington manager Matt Williams said. "That is the plan."

Treinen made three relief appearances earlier this season for the Nationals, and he also was used in that role during his minor league career.

"Jordan is on normal rest. To push everyone back, we had to do that earlier in the month with off days. ... We want to keep them on normal rest," Williams said. "Blake getting his feet wet here ... he has experience in the bullpen so we can do that for the next couple of days until his turn comes up again."

The Marlins were slated to start right-hander Henderson Alvarez on Tuesday, then right-hander Tom Koehler on Wednesday. Now, Alvarez will start Wednesday against the Nationals, while Koehler will pitch Friday at home against the Atlanta Braves.

"Not ideal," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of having the makeup scheduled for September. "Ideal situation for us is to play, obviously. Nobody likes to play doubleheaders, especially late in the season. The only good this is you have more players to cover it (in September)."

The Marlins' make their third and final trip to Washington in late September in the final weekend of the regular season, and the game will be made up then. Both teams are off Thursday. The Nationals begin a series at home Friday against the Texas Rangers, while the Marlins head home for a weekend series with the Braves.

Washington lost four of its past five games and six of its past eight games, and third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and left fielder Bryce Harper are on the disabled list.

Miami is 20-8 at home and 7-17 on the road this year.

NOTES: The Marlins placed RHP Carter Capps (right elbow sprain) on the disabled list retroactive to Monday. Capps is 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in nine games. "He will be down for an extended period of time," said manager Mike Redmond, who added that an MRI revealed no structural damage. ... The Marlins called up RHP Arquimedes Caminero from Triple-A New Orleans to take Capps' spot. Caminero is 1-1 with a 6.63 ERA in 11 games with New Orleans and 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in five games for the Marlins this year. "He has to start getting out big league hitters. This is a big opportunity for him," Redmond said. ... INF Rafael Furcal (left hamstring strain), who was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on May 22, will begin playing rehab games for Class A Jupiter of the Florida State League on Thursday, according to Redmond. ... Until the game was rained out, Washington 2B Kevin Frandsen was due to start for second time in three days. Danny Espinosa, the starting second baseman most of the year, is hitting .123 in his past 74 at-bats.
