KEY STAT: Arsenal are unbeaten in eight home games

EXPERT VERDICT: Victory at the Emirates would go a long way to securing group supremacy for either Arsenal or Paris St-Germain but the draw appeals at the most likely outcome. Arsenal were far too passive at Old Trafford on Saturday and will have to up their game against a PSG side on a roll but the Gunners have shown they can dig out a result this term and can claim a share of the spoils.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Man City have won their last three meetings with Monchengladbach

EXPERT VERDICT: Manchester City are closing in on a place in the knockout stage and can confirm their last-16 spot with a win in Germany. The Citizens ran out easy 4-0 winners when the teams met in Manchester and beat Monchengladbach 2-1 on their travels last season.

KEY STAT: Four of Sparta’s six league wins have come at home

EXPERT VERDICT: Sparta Prague have responded to their 3-0 defeat at St Mary’s with three impressive Europa League wins and will be no pushovers on home soil. The Czech champions have averaged 2.5 goals per home league game this term and the Saints will do well to nullify their attacking threat.

KEY STAT: Feyenoord have failed to win four of their last six

EXPERT VERDICT: Feyenoord go to Old Trafford knowing a point would give them a clear route to the last 16 of the Europa League, but they aren’t in the best of form. The same, of course, can be said of Manchester United, who have won just three of their last nine, though they have won both home group games.

KEY STAT: Forest have kept one clean sheet in 17 league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Nottingham Forest have kept just one clean sheet this season and another may be beyond them when they visit Barnsley The Tykes are one of the division’s highest scorers and are capable of carving open a flaky Forest defence But there are question marks over Barnsley at the back so goals look likely.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

CL Best Bets - Wednesday
By Toby Maxtone-Smith

UEFA Champions League - Matchday 5

Four groups got one game nearer their conclusion last night, with quite a few teams securing qualification to the next round of the Champions League. Monaco’s win over Spurs means they win Group E and Bayer Leverkusen will come second. Spurs and CSKA Moscow face a play-off for the Europa League spot.

Group F all comes down to Real Madrid’s home game with Borussia Dortmund: if Real win, they win the group; anything else, Dortmund do.

Leicester have won Group F leaving FC Porto and FC Copenhagen to battle for second place. And in Group H Juventus’s late winner means that they only need a home win against Dinamo Zagreb to finish top. If Lyon beat Sevilla in France they will pip the highly-rated Spaniards to second.

The Banker: Napoli to beat Dynamo Kiev at 4/9

Group B is still very tight, with Benfica and Napoli on seven points, Besiktas on six and Dynamo Kiev on one. Benfica and Napoli still have to play each other again, meaning that Dynamo Kiev now cannot qualify for the second round. This means they have little to play for away to Napoli, while the home side are in a closely-fought race.

Napoli got an important 2-1 win away to Udinese last time out and, after a tricky start, they lie sixth in Serie A. But barring a disastrous 3-2 defeat at home to Besiktas, they have looked the best team in the group so far. They tore Benfica apart, winning 4-2, at home, before a 1-1 draw where they had much the better of the game. Napoli had never lost at home in the Champions League before that Besiktas defeat, and at 4/9 they are a banker to win.

The Solid Bet: Ludogorets Razgrad to beat Basel at 8/5

Both Ludogorets Razgrad and Basel have drawn one and lost three. The draw was with each other - a 1-1 stalemate in Switzerland and defeats to Arsenal and PSG. Basel have the greater Champions League pedigree, but Ludogorets are the narrow 8/5 favourites, with Basel 8/15.

There is still a lot to play for here: a Europa League run would be fantastic for both sides, and it is Ludogorets’s home performances that have given the Bulgarian team the best cause for optimism. They went 2-0 up against Arsenal before losing 3-2. But for much of the game they matched their illustrious rivals. Basel, meanwhile, have only scored twice - both at home. Their away matches to PSG and Arsenal both ended in meek 3-0 defeats where they barely threatened.

Ludogorets have looked the more dangerous team, and hope advantage could give them the edge here.

The Outsider: PSG to win at Arsenal at 2/1

Arsenal are firmly in the title race in the Premier League, but their matches against good teams this year have been marked by a run of good luck for the North London side. Other than their 3-0 win over Chelsea, the Gunners have been poor in their most important games this year. They were incredibly lucky to escape with 1-1 draws from PSG and Manchester United. They lost 4-3 at home to Liverpool and were unspectacular in a 1-1 home draw with Spurs.

PSG had a dodgy start to the season, but they are motoring towards the top of Ligue 1 after five wins in their last six games. They have only conceded once in those matches. Arsenal are 29/20 to win this match, but their displays against the best sides this year do nothing to justify that price. Back PSG to win at 2/1.

The First Goalscorer: Edinson Cavani for PSG against Arsenal at 4/1

Arsenal simply could not deal with Edinson Cavani’s movement in the first fixture between the Gunners and Paris Saint Germain. It was only some appalling finishing from the Uruguayan that prevented him getting a hat-trick. But he did score the first goal of that game - in the first minute, indeed. And with PSG good value to win the match, it would be a good idea to take their top marksman to score the game’s first goal at 4/1. He has 11 in Ligue 1 this year and seems to have put his early-season jitters behind him.

NHL roundup: Blues snap skid with win in Boston
By The Sports Xchange

BOSTON -- The St. Louis Blues snapped a three-game road losing streak, twice coming from behind to defeat the Boston Bruins 4-2 on Tuesday night.
Jori Lehtera scored two goals and Robert Bortuzzo and Paul Stastny scored second-period goals 2:12 apart for the Blues.
Jake Allen to win for the eighth time in their last nine visits to TD Garden.
Jori Lehtera, who scored the Blues' first goal, scored into an empty net with 1:16 left to salt the game away for St. Louis -- his second and third goals of the season.
David Backes and Dominic Moore scored for the Bruins.

Senators 4, Canadiens 3
MONTREAL -- Erik Karlsson scored the game-winning goal to lift Ottawa over Montreal at the Bell Centre.
Mike Hoffman, Derick Brassard and Mike Stone also scored for the Senators, who have won both meetings against the Canadiens so far.
Shea Weber, Alexander Radulov and Alex Galchenyuk scored for the Canadiens, who lost for the first time in regulation at home. Andrei Markov recorded three assists.

Flyers 3, Panthers 1
SUNRISE, Fla. -- Steve Mason and struggling Philadelphia defense turned things around, shutting down Florida at the BB&T Center.
The Flyers entered the game last in the NHL at 3.42 goals allowed per game before Mason made 38 saves. Wayne Simmonds, Dale Weise and Nick Cousins scored.
Reilly Smith's goal with 1:51 left in the third ruined Mason's shutout bid.

Hurricanes 2, Maple Leafs 1
TORONTO -- Viktor Stalberg scored a short-handed goal in the second period to break a tie, and Carolina posted a victory over Toronto to extend its winning streak to five games.
Jeff Skinner scored a power-play goal for the Hurricanes in the first period to tie the game. Jake Gardiner's goal gave the Maple Leafs a first-period lead.
Frederik Andersen made 27 saves for Toronto, which lost its second game in a row.

Islanders 3, Ducks 2 (SO)
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Nick Leddy scored in the 14th shootout round to give New York a win over Anaheim at the Honda Center.
Adam Pelech and Josh Bailey scored in regulation for the Islanders, who broke a four-game losing streak with just their second victory this month. Thomas Greiss stopped a season-high 39 shots.
Cam Fowler and Rickard Rakell followed suit for the Ducks, and Jonathan Bernier made 33 saves.

Streaky Teams
Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak
Anaheim 4-1 past 5 home Buffalo Under 11-2-2 past 15
Carolina 4-0 past 4 overall Florida Over 5-2-2 past 9
Columbus 6-0-1 past 7 home San Jose Under 12-1-3 past 16
N.Y. Islanders 0-4-1 past 5 road Tampa Bay Under 6-1-1 past 8
St. Louis 0-4 past 4 road, 1-5-1 past 7 road Vancouver Over 6-1-1 past 8

No Jacket Required
The Columbus Blue Jackets lost back-to-back games in regulation to kick off the 2016-17 regular season, but they haven't done so since. They're 6-0-1 over their past seven games at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, and they're 8-1-2 over their past 11 games overall. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has been on point so far this season, posting a 10-4-1 record with a 2.19 Goals-Against Average (GAA) and .931 save percentage. The Jackets also have seven players with at least 10 points through 17 games, including LW Nick Foligno averaging more than one point per game, and RW Cam Atkinson and C Alexander Wennberg contributing exactly one point per contest. Bettors do not care who is scoring or saving the shots, but what's uncanny about Columbus is that a cast of relative unknowns is banding together and playing better than more heralded squads.

Sweet and Sour Notes
The St. Louis Blues have been making sweet music at home, while hitting sour notes on the road. St. Louis has won three straight in regulation at home, while posting a 6-0-1 mark over their past seven dating back to Oct. 29. On the road it has been a different story, as they have dropped four in a row while scoring just seven total goals and allowing 22. As it stands, the Blues will play in Boston Tuesday and in Washington Wednesday before returning home Saturday against Minnesota.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, Nov. 23
The Penguins and Rangers renew acquaintances at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Penguins have won their past four trips to Madison Square Garden, and they're 7-2 in the past nine overall meetings in this series. The road team is also 4-1 in the past five meetings in this series. ... The Jets hit the road for St. Paul to battle the Wild, and something's gotta give with these two clubs. The Jets have dropped their past four road outings, while the Wild are 0-4 in their past four against teams with a losing record while going 0-4 in their past four against Western Conference foes. Winnipeg has won six of the past eight in this series. ... The Blackhawks visit the Bay Area looking to hook the Sharks. The 'under' is the prevailing trend, going 5-1-4 in the past 10 road games for Chicago and 3-1-3 in the past seven overall. The under is 9-1-1 in the past 11 home games for San Jose, and 19-4-3 in their past 26 overall.

Thursday, Nov. 17
The Canadiens look for revenge against the Hurricanes at Bell Centre Thursday evening. The Hurricanes won 3-2 at PNC Arena in Raleigh Nov. 18 with Cam Ward besting backup Al Montoya. While the Hurricanes have won four in a row, all at home, they're just 2-3-4 in nine games away from home this season. Six of their road games have resulted in one-goal losses. ... The Bruins face off against the Senators in Canada's capital city, as these rivals meet for the first time this season. The Senators won three of four meetings last season, including both meetings in Ottawa. The B's have won just once in the past six trips to Ottawa since the start of the 2013-14 season.

Friday, Nov. 18
The Rangers and Flyers battle on Friday afternoon in the City of Brotherly Love for the first time this season. There isn't much love lost in this series. Last season these teams met three times in Philadelphia, with each game ending in a 3-2 shootout. The Rangers won two of those games, and they're 4-0-1 in their past five regular season trips to Philly. ... The Oilers invade the desert Friday night, battling the Coyotes for the first time this season. Last season the Oilers were 0-2-1 in three trips to Glendale, and the Coyotes outscored them 12-6 in those games. Overall Arizona took two points in four of the five meetings. It has been six trips to Arizona since Edmonton came away with two points, a 3-2 shootout win April 4, 2014. It has been 12 trips to Arizona, dating back to Jan. 25, 2011, that the Oilers skated away with two points in regulation.

Preview: Red Wings (8-10) at Sabres (7-8)

Date: November 23, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The offensively challenged Buffalo Sabres finally found their scoring touch on Monday night. They'll look to do so again against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday in order to pick up their second three-game win streak of the season.

The rare offensive burst from the lowest-scoring team in the NHL came thanks to a lack of discipline by the Calgary Flames on Monday. The Sabres scored three power-play goals in a span of 1:41 in the second period on their way to a 4-2 victory. The Sabres had not scored more than two goals in any of their previous 10 games.

"I could tell we were just champing at the bit for the floodgates to open, and that second period was huge for us," said Sabres defenseman Tyler Fedun, who had two assists. "Everybody was able to take a bit of a deep breath when we started to score some goals."

Kyle Okposo, Johan Larsson, Matt Moulson and Marcus Foligno all scored for Buffalo in the victory.

"It's a lot of goals in a short amount of time for our team," Sabres head coach Dan Bylsma said. "It was a couple of great plays on all three of the power-play goals to get us goals and much-needed goals."

The Sabres (7-8-4) could get some additional help on offense as well in time for the game against the Red Wings. Center Ryan O'Reilly participated in an optional skate on Tuesday and is getting closer to returning to action. The Sabres expected O'Reilly to return sometime this week.

"We tested him a couple different ways with some faceoffs and battle drills there," Bylsma said, according to the Sabres' team website. "I thought he shot the puck particularly well, if that's any indication. I thought he looked pretty good out there."

Goaltending has been strong in recent games for the Sabres. Robin Lehner has a save percentage of .920 on the season and backup Anders Nilsson has been a pleasant surprise. In five games, Nilsson has a save percentage of .951. He made 46 saves in a 2-1 shootout win over Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Buffalo will have a good chance to keep its win streak alive against the struggling Red Wings (8-10-1). The Red Wings have lost four in a row and nine of their past 11 games after starting the year with a solid 6-2 start.

"Guys are sick of the way things are going," center Dylan Larkin said Tuesday, according to the Detroit Free Press. "If you want to make a change, it starts with looking in the mirror and seeing what you have to do to help the team.

"We've got to realize where we put ourselves. The good thing is it is still early, but we have to stop the bleeding. The other good thing is we know we can put a streak together, we have done it before this year. But we have got to realize we have to start playing here soon, or it is going to be too late."

Each of Detroit's last three losses have come by one goal. Like the Sabres, Detroit's biggest problem is scoring. Through 19 games, the Red Wings were 24th in the league in scoring (2.32 goals per game).

Preview: Blues (11-6) at Capitals (11-5)

Date: November 23, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- The St. Louis Blues will aim for their fifth consecutive win when they travel to Washington to face the Capitals on Wednesday night.

St. Louis (11-6-3) defeated the Bruins 4-2 in Boston on Tuesday night for just their third road win of the season. The surging Blues, second in the Central Division, trailed early but rallied twice. They haven't allowed a third-period goal in their past four games.

"We've made the other teams crack by keeping the pressure up, keeping the good play up and not cracking ourselves," coach Ken Hitchcock told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Jori Lehtera scored twice for St. Louis against Boston, including an empty-netter. Patrik Berglund snapped an 11-game scoreless streak with two assists, and Paul Stastny and Robert Bortuzzo each provided a goal.

"We're building. Building every day," Bortuzzo told the Post-Dispatch. "We had a tough stretch there, but it seems like we're going in the right direction."

Jake Allen stopped 39 shots for St. Louis, so Washington might face Carter Hutton (2-3-0, 2.77 goals-against average) in the second of back-to-back games. Hutton is 2-1-0 with a 3.25 GAA versus Washington in his career. Allen posted a shutout in his only game against Washington.

The Capitals are coming off a rare home loss Sunday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Former St. Louis forward T.J. Oshie (eight goals on the season) is week-to-week with an upper-body injury and won't be in the lineup for the first of two games between the teams, but Lars Eller (upper-body injury) might return after missing one game.

In the teams' last meeting on April 9, the Capitals defeated the Blues 5-1 at Scottrade Center as Alex Ovechkin scored three goals and Nicklas Backstrom picked up three assists.

Ovechkin leads Washington (11-5-2) with nine goals, and Backstrom has five goals and 12 assists. However, with forwards Justin Williams, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Andre Burakovsky all stuck on two goals after 18 games, other Capitals are stepping up.

Marcus Johansson has seven goals and six assists, and Jay Beagle, whose career high is 10 goals, has four and four assists.

"When I first got here, everybody told me that (Beagle) is just fourth line and he's not going to score a whole lot, and he's shown that he can score a little bit more and he's worked on it," Washington coach Barry Trotz said. "There's one thing that you cannot deny with Jay Beagle: that he works on his game."

Despite their regular-season success a year ago, the Capitals often played from behind. This season they scored first in 15 of 18 games.

"We put an emphasis on it," Trotz said. "It's hard to trail in this league. The parity is so good and teams are so structured and teams play well. ... You don't get that opportunity to come back from a few goals."

Ovechkin has 10 goals and 10 assists in 13 games vs. St. Louis, while Backstrom has six goals and 11 assists in 12 games. Holtby is 3-0 with a 1.00 GAA against the Blues.

St. Louis could be in for a letdown of sorts after Tuesday's game, in which they faced long-time teammate and former captain, David Backes, who scored Boston's first goal.

"Yeah, I think if you ask the family or people outside the situation, you are happy for him, he gets his goal," Stastny said. "As a team, we are happy because you know we got our two points and now we look forward to (Wednesday)."

Preview: Penguins (11-5) at Rangers (14-5)

Date: November 23, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers will meet at Madison Square Garden for the second time in three days Wednesday, with the Penguins looking to bounce back after a 5-2 drubbing in Pittsburgh on Monday.

The Penguins took a 2-0 lead in the first period but succumbed to the league's best offense, as the Rangers scored four straight goals against goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and a fifth into an empty net. It's unlikely that Fleury will be in net Wednesday, as Matt Murray is clearly the better goaltender this season.

The transition has been an issue for Fleury, who has a .907 save percentage.

"Definitely different than what I've been used to," Fleury said to TribLive.com. "It's a little bit of a different mindset going into games. It's the way it is. I've got to find ways to be ready, to be sharp and help my team win games."

The Penguins have lost three of four and haven't been sharp of late, no matter who has been in net. Only two teams have allowed more shots per game this season than the Penguins, who are giving up an average of 33.4 through 19 games. Despite playing at a 107-point pace, the Penguins are a minus-1 in goal differential.

They started well against the Rangers, who enter Wednesday with a four-point lead on Pittsburgh in the Metropolitan Division, but were pummeled over the final 40 minutes.

"We know a lot about this team," Rangers left winger J.T. Miller said of Pittsburgh. "We've played them so much over the last handful of years. We were just on our heels a little too much to start. We were a little too passive, and we were more aggressive after that. When we did that, we kind of forced them into more turnovers and got a couple more lucky bounces. We did a really good job of defending after that as well."

The Rangers scored at least five goals in a game for the 10th time this season, by far the highest mark in the league. What made it particularly impressive was it came less than 24 hours after losing top center Mika Zibanejad to a broken fibula that will sideline him for the next six to eight weeks.

Despite playing at less than 100 percent and on no rest, the Rangers saved their best for the final 40 minutes.

"We're trying to play a fast-paced game and we're also trying to check quickly," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said to the New York Daily News. "I believe we saw that in the second and the third. It would've been easy for us on back-to-back nights to maybe not put out the way we were expected to, but not this group."

Familiarity breeds contempt and there should be no shortage of it Wednesday. The Penguins and Rangers have met in the postseason the past three years, so even though this is the regular season, back-to-back contests between these teams is nothing new for anyone involved.

"You're looking at those games as good challenges, good matchups and obviously they mean a lot because it's within the division," center Sidney Crosby told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "You really expect to be at your best for those games, and you want to make sure you're playing the right way. Whether we lost or won (Monday), I think you go in with the same mindset here, maybe even a little more desperate, hopefully."

Preview: Jets (9-10) at Wild (9-7)

Date: November 23, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Playing five times at home in the matter of six games, the Minnesota Wild had the prime opportunity to make a move in the Central Division.

With two games left in that span, sandwiching the Thanksgiving holiday, Minnesota is hoping to salvage its remaining two games beginning Wednesday against the Winnipeg Jets.

The Wild return home having lost back-to-back games with Monday's overtime loss at Dallas.

"We did fight back twice, and that's something we haven't done a lot of," Minnesota coach Bruce Boudreau told the team's website after Monday's loss. "I thought we got better as the game went on. It's a hard-earned point in here, and the points are gonna be very valuable to come by, cause it's gonna be tight."

In the previous three home games, the Wild won once. In November, the Wild have lost three of four home games after starting the season by winning the first four games on home ice. The November schedule hasn't been kind to either team.

Winnipeg has lost three games in a row, all three coming on the road. The Jets lost 3-1 at Carolina on Sunday. After playing 17 games in 29 games, two days off was a welcome respite.

"We've played well up until the last two games," head coach Paul Maurice told the team's website, adding: "We need the mental break from those two, and now we get back to teams that we play a lot, and we understand the style of game that's going to happen, and try to get back on that winning track."

Minnesota and Winnipeg are tied in the division with 20 points, but the Wild have played three fewer games. Minnesota also won the first game between the two teams, opening the season with a 4-3 victory at home.

Goaltender Devan Dubnyk saved 14 shots in the victory and should start on Wednesday after Darcy Kuemper started against Dallas. Dubnyk had allowed nine goals in nine starts before stopping 31 of 34 shots in a loss to Colorado on Saturday.

Eight of the last 12 meetings between the Wild and Jets have been decided by one goal. Minnesota has also played in six straight one-goal games.

The Wild could get defenseman Marco Scandella back in the lineup on Wednesday. Scandella has missed 10 games with a high ankle sprain and is eligible to be activated off long-term injured reserve. Scandella has been practicing with the team.

"It's never fun getting hurt and I knew it wasn't going to be a two-day injury," Scandella told the team's website. "It's hard to watch games. You just want to be a part of it when you're part of a team, you see your guys battling and you're not a part of it. It's frustrating at times, but I'm real excited to get back."

Winnipeg is hoping for reinforcements, as well. Forward Drew Stafford participated in Tuesday's practice, according to the team's website. Stafford, who scored 21 goals last season, has been out since Oct. 25 with an upper-body injury.

"There are other things that you have to make sure you're taking care of yourself, so that if you do come back, you're at 100 percent," Stafford told the team's website. "I've just been preparing every day to make sure I'm ready."

Maurice said Stafford's status would be decided on Wednesday.

"He needed to get through a full practice and feel good," Maurice said. "As of now he did, but we'll wait until tomorrow morning to make sure that continued."

Preview: Maple Leafs (8-8) at Devils (9-6)

Date: November 23, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The New Jersey Devils are limping home to the Prudential Center after a 1-3-0 Western Conference road trip.

New Jersey (9-6-3) hosts the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday riding a three-game losing streak and will be without leading scorer Taylor Hall (knee surgery) and forwards Kyle Palmieri (upper body) and Michael Cammalleri (personal).

The Devils could certainly use some firepower, especially on a moribund power-play that is 0-for-29 in their last nine games. New Jersey is 26th in the NHL with 2.22 goals per game and the power play ranks 28th at 11.9 percent.

New Jersey was shut out 4-0 at San Jose on Monday -- its first shutout since being blanked by the Colorado Avalanche on January 14th, 2016.

Devils goalie Keith Kinkaid made his fourth start of the season and lost in regulation for the first time in 2016-17, falling to 2-1-1 overall. He stopped a season-high 37 of 41 (.902 save percentage shots.)

"We had a big opportunity here to have a good road trip and go .500 and just to come out with a lack of effort, I guess you can say, was disheartening and it's not acceptable and it starts with me," said captain Andy Greene, who logged a season-high 27:18. "We've got to make sure we're good to go right from the drop of the puck and we weren't tonight."

The Maple Leafs (8-8-3) are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Hurricanes in Carolina on Tuesday. They are 1-9 on the road.

"I just thought it was a tight game, exactly like we expected," said Leafs coach Mike Babcock. "We knew it would be tight checking, heavy going. They scored on their power play, we didn't. We gave up a short-handed goal, so there's the game right in itself. In saying all that, I thought it was a contested game, there was no room, there were lots of battles. I think these are games we have to get better in and find ways to win."

Toronto is undergoing some goal-scoring droughts of its own. Rookie sensation Auston Matthews hasn't scored in 12 games. His six goals are tied with William Nylander for fourth among rookies.

Should the Devils get the man advantage that unit will be facing a Toronto penalty kill that is ranked 10th in the NHL.

The Leafs are one of the more physical teams in the league. Center Nazem Kadri is second in the NHL in penalty minutes with 45 and his teammate left winger Matt Martin is third with 41.

Preview: Flames (8-12) at Blue Jackets (10-4)

Date: November 23, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Coach John Tortorella's mantra of "safe is death" is fully displayed on the walls of the Columbus Blue Jackets' locker room and his team is all-in with the philosphy.

Columbus (10-4-3) looks to extend its home point streak to nine contests when it hosts the Calgary Flames on Wednesday after its club-record seven-game winning streak was snapped with a 3-2 overtime loss to Colorado on Monday. The Blue Jackets are 4-0-1 in their last five games overall.

"I think it's a great saying," Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno said. "For the way he wants us to play, I think it makes us feel good about going out there, possibly making mistakes and creating offense. What he means is if you're going out there and trying to make something happen, he'll live with that.

"But if you're going out there, just going through the motions and making careless plays, that's something we're not going to accept on this team."

Calgary (8-12-1) makes its only regular-season visit to Columbus as part of a six-game nine-day road trip through the Eastern Conference. The Flames already traveled approximately 2,464 of the 6,049 miles that encompass the trip.

They opened the trek with a 3-2 victory over Detroit on Sunday before losing to Buffalo 4-2 on Monday.

Calgary is far from full strength with left wing Johnny Gaudreau out with a broken finger. The Flames are still without center Lance Bouma (shoulder) and right wing Kris Versteeg (groin), although Versteeg could play in Columbus.

Special teams could play a role in Wednesday's game as the Blue Jackets boast the top power-play unit at 31.1 percent, which increases to 40 percent at home. Calgary, meanwhile, took six penalties in Buffalo and the Sabres scored three goals -- two with a two-man advantage and one on a 5-on-4 -- in a span of 1:41.

"Extended five-on-threes are tough, when they're that long," Flames captain Mark Giordano told the National Post. "But again, we have to kill them. And then when something bad does happen, we can't dwell on it. We can't let it pile up like it did there.

"That was just one after the other, and it's not good enough."

That performance leaves Calgary with the second-worst penalty-killing unit in the league at 72.7 percent.

Meanwhile, Columbus' 61 penalties are the third-fewest in the NHL.

Neither Brian Elliott (3-9-0, 3.42 goals-against average, .882 save percentage) nor Chad Johnson (5-3-1, 2.31, .911) has asserted themselves as the Flames' clear No. 1 goaltender.

There's no such issue with the Jackets as Sergei Bobrovsky (10-4-1, 2.19, .931), who returns to the net Wednesday, is off to a solid start. Backup Curtis McElhinney (0-0-2, 2.09, .925) suffered the loss Monday.

Preview: Flyers (9-8) at Lightning (12-7)

Date: November 23, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Lightning are not exactly limping home following a successful five-game road trip.

But that doesn't mean they don't have wounds to heal before hosting a Philadelphia Flyers team arriving at Amalie Arena with some injuries of their own.

Tampa Bay returns home after collecting eight of 10 points on the road, but the Lightning lost captain Steven Stamkos for four months to a knee injury along the way. Tampa Bay is also missing top defenseman Anton Stralman, who has missed five games with an undisclosed upper-body injury suffered on Nov. 12 against San Jose.

Though Jonathan Drouin returned to the lineup, the effects of those missing and those playing through injuries -- Brian Boyle and Valtteri Filppula have also missed games -- is taking a toll that was evident in a loss to Nashville on Monday.

"We just looked like a tired group," Lightning head coach Jon Cooper said. "That was a winnable hockey game for us, and we let it slip. We have to regroup for Wednesday."

Boyle said the lack of the right energy was noticeable.

"We had the speed that we normally would play with, but we're not working hard enough," he said. "That's on us. We have to be way better. It's an easy game if a team isn't pressuring you, not being on top of you, not hitting you. We just weren't skating ourselves into position."

Though Stralman's status has remained day-to-day, he skated with the team for the first time during Monday's morning skate, although he was wearing a designated no-contact red jersey.

One player the Flyers know they will be missing is center Sean Couturier, who left Tuesday's 3-1 victory at Florida following a collision with Vincent Trocheck in the second period. Couturier had to be helped off the ice and was unable to put any weight on his left leg.

The team reported that Couturier was being sent back to Philadelphia for further evaluation and is ruled out for Wednesday's game against Tampa Bay. Both the Philadelphia Inquirer and CSN Philadelphia reported the injury was a knee strain and the evaluation was to determine if surgery was required.

"It looked like (Couturier) got tangled up. I heard him yelling there," Mason told the Inquirer. "He was obviously in some pain."

Mason, meanwhile, earned first star honors for the victory at Florida, making 38 saves in his fourth consecutive start, which included Saturday's loss to the Lightning in Philadelphia. With backup Michal Nuervirth out of the lineup and rookie Anthony Stolarz yet to make his NHL debut, Mason's performance on Tuesday could land him another start despite playing on consecutive nights.

"He was the best player on the ice," winger Dale Weise, who scored his first goal in 16 games, told the Inquirer of Mason.

But Mason deferred any credit directed his way.

"It was a real strong game from the whole team," he said. "I'm going to point to the guys out front. They did a great job of moving bodies and giving me a good lane to the point shots and the shots from the outside."

Preview: Stars (8-7) at Predators (8-7)

Date: November 23, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The Dallas Stars won the Central Division last season. Many people felt the Nashville Predators had what it takes to unseat them this season.

With the season not even 25 percent finished, it's become clear both teams have a lot of work ahead of them if they're to scale the heights to which they aspire. Only one can get closer when they meet Wednesday night in Nashville.

Both enter off Monday night home wins, Dallas stopping Minnesota 3-2 in overtime and Nashville dumping Tampa Bay 3-1. But the Stars are just 8-7-5 and the Predators are only 8-7-3, leaving them seven and nine points, respectively, behind first-place Chicago.

However, both teams feel a little better about themselves after playing solid games. Dallas snapped a nine-game overtime losing streak on Jamie Benn's goal 1:23 into the extra period, while Nashville led 3-0 just over halfway through the second period and controlled the action against one of the league's elite teams.

"It felt good. I'm not going to lie," Benn said. "It was nice to finally win one in overtime. I thought we played pretty good. I think we can be happy with that one."

The Predators certainly were happy with their performance, which included good games from their highly touted defense corps. P.K. Subban pumped two goals past Ben Bishop in a 2:40 span of the second period, Ryan Ellis notched three assists and Roman Josi was all over the ice, picking up an assist, moving the puck with skill and drawing a penalty that led to Subban's first marker.

"I think that's the makeup of our defense and the skill set that all our defensemen have," Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said. "I think good defense is a six-man unit -- the goaltender and all five players working inside of a system and trying to do their job."

That's certainly been the case at home for the Predators. They are 6-1-1 in Bridgestone Arena, having outscored their opposition 25-11. In winning their last four at home, they have permitted just three goals, and Pekka Rinne came within 50 seconds of back-to-back shutouts at home Monday night.

The Stars are only 3-4-3 on the road, but one of their wins came Oct. 18 in Nashville, a 2-1 decision that serves as the Predators' only regulation home loss. Jason Spezza notched the tiebreaking goal at 9:15 of the third period as Dallas outshot Nashville 37-28.

Kari Lehtonen was in net that night for the Stars, but Antti Niemi was in goal on Monday night, stopping 27 of 29 shots behind a revamped defense. John Klingberg, generally considered the team's top defenseman, was scratched after missing a team meeting Monday before morning skate, and Stephen Johns was also a healthy scratch.

Coach Lindy Ruff said the changes also were based on improving puck movement.

"Our play coming through the neutral zone was probably as good as it's been all year," he said. "It was simple and effective."

It will have to stay that way if Dallas is to earn a second win in Nashville against an equally needy team.

"We are in a position where we need all the points we can get, all the wins," Rinne said. "We need to keep building our confidence and keep rolling."

Preview: Canucks (7-10) at Coyotes (6-9)

Date: November 23, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Coyotes endured more than their share of injuries, losses and tough travel to start the season, but there is one area in which Arizona is fortunate. The team is tied for the fewest number of games played in the league at 17.

That is about to change.

Starting with a Wednesday home game against the Vancouver Canucks at Gila River Arena, Arizona will play every other day or back-to-back days for the next 46 days -- a total of 23 games. They won't have more than one day off in a row until Dec. 24-26.

The World Cup of Hockey created a condensed schedule for all NHL teams, and the Coyotes are about to pay the piper, eliminating much of their practice time and forcing coach Dave Tippett to get creative.

"There are times when rest is going to be a better factor, but you still don't stop preparing even though you use rest to allow you to play better in games," Tippett said. "With our group, we still do lots of video because we've got a young group that's still learning a lot of situations. You don't stop teaching. You don't stop finding solutions in a game. Sometimes it's just not through practice."

The Canucks (19 games played) face a similar situation with only two two-day rests on the schedule for the next month and 16 games on the slate. That doesn't bode well for a team whose early-season struggles nearly matched the Coyotes'. Vancouver (16 points) and Arizona (14 points) are two of the bottom three teams in the league standings.

Vancouver is still smarting from blowing a three-goal, third-period lead against the Blackhawks on Saturday and losing in overtime at home. The collapse began when Chicago scored two goals in the first 4:06 of the third period.

"I don't think we panicked, but they got momentum off it and started coming at us and were hard to handle," Canucks coach Willie Desjardins said. "We needed to be more aggressive, and we didn't sustain enough. We had to get after it. We didn't want to sit back."

While the Coyotes earned points in each of their past three games (1-0-2), the Canucks are 3-2-1 in their past six games, including a 3-2 overtime win over the Coyotes in Vancouver on Thursday.

Arizona settled its fluctuating center position this week when it sent 2015 first-round pick Dylan Strome back to juniors on Sunday to play for Erie of the Ontario Hockey League. The move came one day after the team lost veteran center Brad Richardson to a broken tibia and fibula in the game against Vancouver. Richardson will be sidelined indefinitely.

With both of those players gone, the Coyotes will rely on a depth chart of Martin Hanzal, rookie Christian Dvorak, rookie Laurent Dauphin and converted left winger Jordan Martinook, who played center in juniors.

"I feel like every game I get more and more comfortable," Martinook said. "Now that I know it's set in stone, I'll focus a little more on the little things like faceoffs. Wherever they put me, wherever they want to play me, I'll do it and I'll do it with a smile on."

Arizona right winger Ryan White (upper body) and defenseman Alex Goligoski (illness) practiced Tuesday and are expected to play. Mike Smith will start in goal.

Vancouver forwards Derek Dorsett (shoulder), Jannik Hansen (undisclosed) and Anton Rodin (knee) and defenseman Chris Tanev (lower body) are on injured reserve. Goalie Ryan Miller is over his case of the flu and is expected to start. The Canucks recalled forward Joseph Labate from Utica of the AHL on Tuesday.

Preview: Oilers (11-8) at Avalanche (9-9)

Date: November 23, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

The Colorado Avalanche have seen Edmonton superstar Connor McDavid, but their fans haven't.

A shoulder injury kept him out of both games in Denver in his rookie campaign last season, but he'll be on the ice Wednesday when the Oilers take on Colorado.

The Oilers are coming off a convincing win against Chicago on Monday, beating the Blackhawks 5-0. It was a much-needed win for Edmonton, which has now won two straight after five-game losing streak. It was also a confident boost to beat a good team.

"That's a big win for us," McDavid told The Edmonton Sun. "They've been hot and gotten points in their last 10 or something ridiculous. They've been playing really well and for us to get a win like that is definitely big for the confidence moving forward."

The Oilers (11-8-1) are facing a Colorado team that is starting to gain traction after an uneven start to the season. The Avalanche (9-9-0) began November losing four of their first five games and scored only eight goals in that stretch. The goaltending was inconsistent, and there was speculation that backup Calvin Pickard could push Semyon Varlamov as the No. 1 netminder.

Varlamov has answered with some strong games. He had 44 saves in a 2-0 loss to Boston and Monday he stopped 40 in Colorado's 3-2 overtime win in Columbus.

He will be in net against Edmonton.

The Avalanche were boosted Monday with the return of leading scorer Matt Duchene. Duchene had missed four games with concussion-like symptoms and his return to the lineup was timely. He got the game winner 1:49 into the overtime after the Blue Jackets had tied it with 6.5 seconds left in regulation.

Duchene's return was needed because Colorado is playing without captain Gabriel Landeskog. Landeskog missed the entire three-game road trip with a lower-body injury and won't play against Edmonton.

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said Landeskog would skate Wednesday morning if the training staff clears him to be on the ice but he wouldn't play Wednesday night.

"He's starting to feel better, so hopefully he's a player for us in the near future," Bednar told HockeyBuzz.com.

Colorado will try to stop the Pacific Division-leading Oilers after their two wins win which McDavid has been a catalyst. He ended a 10-game goal drought with his first career hat trick in a win over Dallas on Saturday and added two assists against Chicago.

Defenseman Oscar Klefbom had a goal for the third straight game after going 27 games without one.

"I was almost a little frustrated after 10, 11, 12 games," he told The Edmonton Sun. "I was hitting some posts and not getting the bounces some games. But I'm really happy with (Monday)."

The Oilers are looking to spoil the start of a five-game homestand for Colorado. The Avalanche have struggled at home, but their 2-1 record on their just-completed road trip could be a sign they are figuring things out under Bednar, who is in his first year behind the Colorado bench.

They've also started getting production from the defensive corps with a goal from Tyson Barrie on Monday and a recent surge in offense from Erik Johnson.

"Obviously, Barrie and Johnson, those two guys can help us coming out of our zone," Bednar told HockeyBuzz.com. "They've stepped up and got big goals from us."

Preview: Blackhawks (13-5) at Sharks (10-8)

Date: November 23, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

The San Jose Sharks appear to be a team in flux, but they've made sure that one of the core pieces will be around for quite a while.

With Brent Burns' contract situation now a done deal, the Sharks continue their five-game homestand Wednesday night versus the Chicago Blackhawks.

San Jose (10-8-1) has long been anchored by Joe Thornton and original Shark Patrick Marleau, both in their 19th NHL seasons with their respective contracts expiring after the season. Joe Pavelski, at 32, and Logan Couture, at 27, are locked up through 2019.

Now the Sharks' top defenseman has been taken care of, as Burns on Tuesday signed an eight-year extension worth a reported $64 million.

Burns, now in his sixth season with San Jose after playing with the Minnesota Wild from 2003-11, is the Sharks' all-time leader among defensemen with 93 goals, and needs 14 points to surpass Dan Boyle (269 points from 2008-14) as the team's career leader in points among blue-liners.

"Brent is one the most dynamic players in the National Hockey League and we're very excited to get this deal done," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson told the team's official website Tuesday.

Burns snapped a season high-tying, three-game scoreless streak with a goal and assist in the Sharks' 4-0 win over the New Jersey Devils on Monday in the opener of the homestand. He leads San Jose with seven goals and with 16 points is one shy of tying Pavelski for the team lead.

While with the Sharks, Burns has two goals and five assists in 14 career games against the Blackhawks in San Jose.

The Sharks, who lost in the Stanley Cup final in six games to the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, come into this game trailing the Edmonton Oilers by just two points for the Pacific Division lead. And even though Burns will be 40 when the new deal expires, he's excited about what the future holds for the club.

"We got some great guys coming up. ... We're going to have a great group for a long time," Burns told the San Jose Mercury News.

Martin Jones is expected to start in goal for the Sharks, and if so, he'll try to build off a 26-save performance against the Devils for his second shutout in six games.

Jones is 5-2-0 with a 1.58 goals-against average with a .933 save percentage at SAP Center this season. He lost in his only start and career appearance against the Blackhawks last season.

The Blackhawks annual Circus Trip shifts to California after going 2-2-0 across central and western Canada.

Chicago was blanked for the second time on this trip -- 5-0 by Edmonton on Monday. The Blackhawks dropped a 4-0 decision to the Winnipeg Jets on Nov. 15, and were held scoreless for the first 42:53 before roaring back from three goals down for a 4-3 overtime win over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday

Coach Joel Quenneville told the Chicago Sun-Times that he needs production from everyone.

"When you don't score in two of the three games, and you basically get production in one period out of nine, you're looking for ways to generate," he said. "... But we need four lines going."

Jonathan Toews has been remarkably consistent through his first nine NHL seasons for Chicago, averaging 28 goals and 35 assists. However, the Blackhawks' captain has just four goals and eight assists in 20 games, and has failed to get on the scoresheet in the last four.

Facing the Sharks may help him get back on track. He's posted 13 goals and 13 assists in 29 career games versus San Jose, leading his team to a 16-9-4 record.

Chicago is 8-2-2 in its last 12 against the Sharks, however the two regulation defeats have been by shutout. The Blackhawks' defense has been particularly strong, limiting the Sharks to 1.83 goals per game over the dozen matchups.

Corey Crawford will likely get the chance to make up for the poor effort in Edmonton. He's 3-0-1 with a 1.97 GAA in his last four starts in San Jose.

"That wasn't our team," Crawford said Monday. "... We just have to forget about it and worry about the next game."

Preview: Islanders (6-8) at Kings (10-9)

Date: November 23, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES -- The New York Islanders bring a surprising surge of momentum into a Wednesday game against the red-hot Los Angeles Kings.

New York (6-8-4) broke a four-game losing streak by winning a franchise-record, 14-round shootout and emerging with a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday. The road victory was the first of the season for the Islanders, who are 1-4-1 overall away from Barclays Center during an early-season schedule heavily weighted toward home contests.

Thomas Griess was the key to victory, stopping 39 shots through regulation and overtime then 10 more in the shootout for his first victory since Oct. 30 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Nick Leddy became the first defenseman in Islanders history to score a game-winning shootout goal but deferred credit to his goaltender for earning the two points.

"I was a little nervous," Leddy said of his shootout chance. "Johnny Boychuk and I were talking saying there was a good chance we were gonna go in the shootout, but Thomas came up huge for us in the net."

Griess said, "It's great to get the win. That's the most important part. It's big and great for the morale of the team."

The Islanders may have to play Wednesday without Cal Clutterbuck, who left the Tuesday game with an upper-body injury after taking a hit from Anaheim's Josh Manson. He did not return, and it was presumed he was being evaluated for a possible concussion.

Despite the win, New York remains last in the Eastern Conference and is tied with Arizona for the least amount of regulation wins in the NHL (five). Coming off a 102-point regular season and a playoff series win against the Florida Panthers, expectations were high as the season started. The slow start has fueled speculation about the status of Jack Capuano, but general manager Garth Snow gave the embattled coach a vote of confidence last week.

While the lone win won't quiet the speculation, it gives the Islanders a foothold in the hopes of turning their season around. Standing in their way is a Kings team that has battled through injury adversity to regain the form that will be needed to contend for the Pacific Division title.

The Kings' 10-9-1 record was fashioned by both winning and losing streaks. At present, Los Angeles is on a four-game winning streak after defeating the Ducks 3-2 Sunday. The winning streak is more impressive considering it comes at the conclusion of an eight-games-in-13-days segment of the schedule and accomplished without the presence of Anze Kopitar, the Kings' top center and leading scorer for the past eight seasons.

In his absence, Jeff Carter stepped up, recording four goals and two assists to earn the NHL First Star for the week ending Sunday. Overall, Carter leads the team with nine goals and 17 points in 20 games, including his 600th career point in the Anaheim victory.

"You lose a guy like Kopitar, everybody has to step up," Carter said after the Sunday win. "One guy's not going to fill his spot. Guys have done a good job."

Kopitar is close to returning after missing six games with a wrist injury sustained in a 2-1 loss at Ottawa on Nov. 11. Although he skated with the extra players Tuesday, a source said he will attempt to return against the Islanders. The Kings trail the division-leading Edmonton Oilers by two points entering the contest.

Kings coach Darryl Sutter was forced to rely on rookies through the team's first 20 games. An injury to top-four defenseman Brayden McNabb caused Derek Forbort to be promoted to the top defensive pairing and led to the recall of Kevin Gravel. Forbort and Gravel struggled on Los Angeles' last road trip but stabilized their play during the winning streak.

"They're probably not going to be in the lineup if we're fully healthy," Sutter admitted.

Grand Salami - November

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.
