KEY STAT: Tottenham lost two Premier League home matches in 2016

EXPERT VERDICT: Chelsea's quest to equal the Premier League record of consecutive victories could fall just short at White Hart Lane. The Blues have been brilliant to win their last 13 top-flight games and hit the Premier League summit in the process but this London derby is going to be tough against in-form Tottenham, who are unbeaten at White Hart Lane this season.

NHL roundup: Blue Jackets run winning streak to 16
By The Sports Xchange

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It seems no one can beat the Columbus Blue Jackets these days. Columbus rattled off its 16th consecutive victory with a 3-1 result against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.
Cam Atkinson and William Karlsson scored power-play goals and a third-period goal from Nick Foligno paced the offense.
The victory pulled Columbus within a win of tying the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins for the most consecutive wins. Sergei Bobrovsky made 21 saves and extended his win streak to 14 games.
Cam Talbot faced 32 shots in the loss and turned away 30 or more for the 16th time this season fopr the Oilers.

Sabres 4, Rangers 1
NEW YORK -- Jack Eichel was among four players to score and Anders Nilsson made 24 saves as Buffalo beat New York at Madison Square Garden .
Zemgus Girgensons, Evander Kane and Justin Bailey scored for the Sabres, who were swept in a home-and-home series by the Boston Bruins last week
Defenseman Nick Holden scored his eighth goal of the season for New York. Henrk Lundqvist stopped 15 shots in defeat.

Jets 6, Lightning 4
TAMPA, Fla. -- A converted penalty shot by Nikolaj Ehlers sparked three straight goals in the second period for Winnipeg, which held on late to defeat Tampa Bay at Amalie Arena.
Ehlers, who added a second goal -- his 12th -- in the third period, beat goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy on the penalty shot for a 2-1 lead, just 47 seconds after the Lightning had tied the game. Tampa Bay saw Vasilevskiy match a season high with five goals allowed.
Down 5-2 with eight minutes left, Nikita Kucherov scored two power-play goals -- the latter with an empty net in 6-on-4 play with 2:31 left. Winnipeg put the game away with an empty-net goal by rookie Patrik Laine -- his 20th of the season -- with 1:23 left.

Devils 3, Hurricanes 1
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Adam Henrique and Mike Cammalleri each scored and set up a goal and Cory Schneider stopped 29 shots as New Jersey snapped Carolina's 11-game home point streak.
The Devils won consecutive games for the first time in a month and improved to 3-0-0 this season against the Hurricanes. New Jersey posted 4-1 and 3-2 victories over Carolina within a two-day period in early November.
Cammalleri's 10th goal of the season came with 8:30 left with an assist from Henrique. It was his team-leading third game-winning goal.

Capitals 6, Maple Leafs 5
WASHINGTON -- Alex Ovechkin scored 22 seconds into overtime as Washington rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period and defeated Toronto.
Ovechkin took a crossing pass from John Carlson and ripped a quick shot from the left circle past Toronto goalie Frederik Andersen, ending the Leafs' five-game winning streak. Washington now has won three in a row.
Frederik Gauthier, Nazem Kadri, Connor Brown and Leo Komarov each scored once for Toronto. High-scoring rookie Auston Matthews added two assists and now has points in seven straight games.

Canadiens 2, Predators 1 (OT)
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Shea Weber, acquired from Nashville in the offseason, notched the tying goal as his Montreal rallied in overtime against the All-Star's old team at sold-out Bridgestone Arena.
Max Pacioretty supplied the winner at 4:30 of the extra session, squeezing a wrist shot past Pekka Rinne for his team-high 16th goal of the season.
Kevin Fiala scored the Predators' lone goal.

Kings 2, Sharks 1 (OT)
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Tanner Pearson capped a two-on-one break with a goal 58 seconds into overtime and Los Angeles beat San Jose at sold-out SAP Center.
Pearson tapped in Jeff Carter's cross-ice feed with only Sharks defenseman Justin Braun back as San Jose's Logan Couture committed a costly turnover in the visitors' zone.
Carter scored his 21st goal of the season -- and seventh in seven games -- for the Kings in regulation while Logan Couture's 12th goal of the season was the only tally for the Sharks.

In the Crease - Week 13
By Joe Williams

Streaky Teams
Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak
Colorado 1-9 past 10 overall, 0-9-1 past 10 home Carolina Under 4-0-2 past six overall
Columbus 15-0 past 15 overall, 7-0 past seven home Los Angeles Under 7-0-1 past eight overall
Minnesota 12-1 past 13 overall, 6-0 past six road N.Y. Islanders Over 6-0 past six overall, 11-2 past 13
San Jose 8-2 past 10 overall N.Y. Rangers Over 5-0 past five overall
Toronto 5-0 past five overall Toronto Under 12-2 past 14 overall

Raking It In On Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been a friend to bettors at the window lately. The Leafs have rattled off five consecutive games, including two straight in overtime and another in a shootout, and they have won four straight as an underdog (+464 during the span). In addition, total bettors have been pleased with their constant 'under' results, hitting in 12 of the past 14 games overall. The 'under' is 6-1 in Toronto's past seven games on the road, which is where they are heading Tuesday in Washington and Friday in New Jersey. In fact, four of Toronto's next five games are away from the center of the hockey universe.

Coyote Ugly
The Arizona Coyotes have dropped seven consecutive games heading into the new year, and they have been outscored 28-13 during the unimpressive span. The Coyotes are in such a tailspin that they haven't been favored since Nov. 23, a span of 19 straight games. In fact, the Coyotes have been favored just three times all season, and they haven't won in such position since their opening game overtime victory against Philadelphia back on Oct. 15 when they were a -110 favorite, highest of the season.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, Jan. 4
The Rangers hit the road for the City of Brotherly Love to battle the Flyers. New York coasts in with six victories in the past seven games on the road, and they're 9-3 in their past 12 games overall. However, the Blueshirts have managed just two victories in the past seven against teams with a winning overall record. Philly is 7-1 in their past eight at home, but they have dropped four in a row and they're just 2-6 in their past eight against teams with a winning percentage over .600. The Rangers have won four straight in this series, and the road team is 4-1 in the past five meetings. The 'under' is 1-0-3 in the past four in Philly, and 3-0-3 in the past six meetings overall.

The Coyotes will face the Canucks in Vancouver, and that usually doesn't end well for them. Arizona is just 8-21-1 in their past 30 trips to the Pacific Northwest, and they have dropped each of their past four overall. The 'under' is 2-0-2 in the past four in Vancouver, with the 'under' going 18-7-3 in the past 28 meetings in this series. Arizona has won just 12 times in their past 51 tries on the road, while going 0-4 in the past four against teams with a losing overall record. The Canucks skate in on a four-game win streak, and they're 4-1 in their past five games on home ice.

Thursday, Jan. 5
The Wild look to stay hot against the Sharks in a battle of two premier Western Conference teams. This is the first meeting between the two Western Conference foes this season. Last season the Sharks split a pair of games on home ice with the Wild, winning 4-3 on Jan. 23, 2016, and losing 2-0 on Dec. 12. San Jose won two of the three meetings overall, and four of the past five in the series. Minnesota has won six straight on the road dating back to a shootout loss in Calgary back on Dec. 2, and they have lost in regulation on the road just once in the past 11 away from St. Paul.

The Red Wings pull into Los Angeles Thursday night looking to crown the Kings, but lately they haven't been able to piece much together. Detroit hasn't won back-to-back games in nearly a month. The Kings won 4-1 in their final visit to Joe Louis Arena back on Dec. 15. The Red Wings are just 3-5-2 over their past 10 games. However, they are 4-1-1 in their past six games on the road, while Los Angeles is 6-1-1 in their past eight games at home. Something's gotta give in this meeting between former Western Conference combatants.

Friday, Jan. 6
The Maple Leafs look to stay hot against the ice-cold Devils in Newark Friday night. New Jersey was glad to see the calendar turn to 2017, ringing in the new year with a 3-0 shutout of the visiting Boston Bruins Monday night. It was a rare home win, as the Devils are just 2-4 over their past six at home. These teams met in Newark back on Nov. 23, and New Jersey came away with a 5-4 victory in a shootout. New Jersey hasn't lost in regulation in 10 straight meetings with Toronto (6-0-4), and the Devils have won five straight meetings on home ice.

The Flames meet the Canucks in Vancouver for the third meeting of the season. The Canucks won the first meeting back on Oct. 15, snuffing out the Flames 2-1 in a shootout. Calgary avenged the loss on home ice with a 4-1 win Dec. 23. The Flames have won three of their past four games overall, and they're 6-2-1 in their past nine games on the road. Vancouver has won four in a row heading into the new week, and they have lost in regulation just once in their past eight on home ice (6-1-1).

Preview: Jets (18-19) at Panthers (16-14)

Date: January 04, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Too bad Aleksander Barkov and Patrik Laine won't be able to meet on the ice Wednesday night at the BB&T Center.

Both are big, talented and young forwards from Tampere, Finland. Both were the No. 2 overall selections in recent NHL drafts -- Barkov to the Florida Panthers in 2013 and Laine to the Winnipeg Jets in 2016.

But when the Jets (18-19-3) visit the Panthers (16-14-8) on Wednesday, Barkov is expected to miss the game due to a lower body injury.

During last fall's World Cup of Hockey 2016 at Toronto, Barkov, 21, played on a Finnish line with Laine, 18, and Sebastian Aho, 19.

Barkov, who is almost always the youngest player on his Panthers line that also includes 44-year-old legend Jaromir Jagr, said it felt odd to play with two younger guys in the World Cup.

"I usually play with Jagr, and he's 65-year-old," Barkov joked as he met with the media in Toronto this past September. "It was weird. I was the oldest guy on the line, and I'm only 21."

Barkov, who suffered an unspecified injury on Dec. 28 against the Toronto Maple Leafs, set career highs last season in goals (28), assists (31) and points (59) in 66 games.

This season, he has nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points in 36 games, establishing himself as one of the league's best two-way centers.

Laine, pronounced Lie-nay, has already earned a reputation for one of the hardest shots in hockey.

"I've never seen a guy shoot the puck like that," Jets veteran coach Paul Maurice told the media recently.

Among NHL rookies this season, Laine is tied for the lead with Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs in terms of most goals (20), assists (14) and points (34).

Laine is part of an impressive list of players drafted No. 1 or No. 2 overall in the past four years, including Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel, Matthews, Barkov, Nathan Mackinnon, Sam Reinhart and Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad.

Already this season, Laine has two hat tricks -- in his fourth NHL game against the Toronto Maple Leafs and again in Game No. 14 against the Dallas Stars. Both of those performances were home games for Winnipeg.

Laine, though, hasn't been able to do much to help a defense that ranks 27th in the NHL in killing penalties and 29th in number of goals allowed.

The defense was not very good again on Tuesday night but the Jets managed to outscore the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-4.

Laine had one goal and two assists against Tampa Bay as his confidence continues to grow.

"I've seen that I can play in this league," Laine told the media. "I've seen that I can play against the best in the world. My teammates agree with me, and that is the most important thing for me."

Laine, locked in a battle with McDavid for NHL Rookie of the Year honors, is an intense athlete who is not happy at all whenever he doesn't score.

Imagine his mood when he got off to a slow start in the exhibition season, but he has been rolling ever since.

"It's a dream come true to be in the NHL," Laine told The Chicago Tribune recently. "I want to show everyone that I'm a good player. Hopefully I can be the best one day."

Other story lines for Wednesday's game:

= Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo is expected to get the start and if so will attempt for the third time to get win No. 448, which would put him in fifth place in the all-time NHL list.

= Going against a trend, Winnipeg outscored Tampa Bay 3-1 in the second period on Sunday. Prior to that, the Jets had outscored opponents 52-25 in the second period.

= The Jets beat the Panthers 4-3 in a shootout on Dec. 15 Bryan Little scored the tying goal and then scored again in the shootout to lead Winnipeg.

= Jets defenseman Tyler Myers is nearing a return. He has missed 24 games this season due to a lower-body injury. However, he had a light on-ice workout on Tuesday.

Preview: Canadiens (23-9) at Stars (16-15)

Date: January 04, 2017 8:00 PM EDT

DALLAS -- The Montreal Canadiens and Dallas Stars meet Wednesday night at American Airlines Center with both clubs seeking closure of some sort.

Montreal (23-9-6), which won 2-1 in overtime at Nashville on Tuesday, looks to finish its current seven-game road trip strong.

The Canadiens, who are 8-6-4 on the road, are 2-3-0 with two games remaining on their current trek which concludes Saturday in Toronto.

Tuesday's game against the Predators marked the first contest in Nashville for Canadiens defenseman Shea Weber since he was traded to Montreal last summer. Weber was moved during a first-period video tribute and ended up scoring the tying goal early in the third period.

"Obviously, it's very special to be back in this building, and it's even more special to win the game," Weber told the media postgame.

This is the Canadiens' seventh back-to-back this season and Montreal is 5-1-0 in the second game of its previous back-to-backs.

Carey Price started in goal Tuesday and stopped 22 shots.

Considering his rather light workload Tuesday, Canadiens coach Michael Thierren could go with Price again between the pipes or he could turn to backup netminder Al Montoya to start against the Stars.

The Stars (16-15-7) look to finish a three-game homestand and a run where they played eight of their last nine on home ice with a victory.

The Stars last played Saturday night, when they fell 3-1 to the Florida Panthers at home. Florida blitzed Dallas for three goals in the first period and the Stars never recovered.

But the big story from that loss was that captain Jamie Benn injured his foot after the stick of Panthers defenseman Mark Pysyk got caught in his skate as he assisted on the Stars goal, scored by Patrick Eaves in the second period.

The Dallas players had Sunday off and Benn was unable to skate Monday or Tuesday, so Stars coach Lindy Ruff ruled his captain out for the lone visit of the regular season from the Atlantic Division-leading Canadiens.

"Well, the only update is he's still day-to-day, but he won't play tomorrow. Didn't practice today, so we're still treating it as day-to-day," Ruff said Tuesday of Benn.

Dallas, which is 11-6-3 at home, dealt with a rash of injuries for much of this season, so Ruff has considerable experience at juggling his lines and finding players to step in for their injured teammates.

Of course, few of those players are a former Art Ross Trophy winner or perennial NHL All-Star such as Benn. But again, Ruff takes the cards he's dealt and makes the best of what everyone close to the organization hopes is a short-term situation with Benn on the sidelines.

"Again, we're going to have to find ways to win games," Ruff said. "There's a lot of injuries around the league. We've been hit hard with them and Jamie's another one, but we have to plug a guy in his spot. We've got some guys that are coming back now, so someone's going to have to pick up the slack for him."

And one of those players returning is gritty forward Antoine Roussel, out the previous four games with an upper-body injury.

However, Roussel practiced without issue Tuesday, leading Ruff to term him as probable for Wednesday's contest.

"I am not sure if I am in tomorrow, but I am pretty close to a return," Roussel said. "It's just about getting some physical contact and getting there. I feel pretty good, skated pretty well. Really hoping to come back tomorrow, if not then the next game."

As for this stretch of games at home, Dallas went 4-2-1 and veteran center Jason Spezza speaks for the entire room when he says they'd definitely like to end this run of games mostly at home on a high with a win.

"Yeah, we talked about trying to make up some ground,' Spezza said. "We have and now we have a chance to finish with a sixth win. It'd be good for our confidence for sure."

Preview: Rangers (26-13) at Flyers (20-14)

Date: January 04, 2017 8:00 PM EDT

PHILADELPHIA -- While the backsliding Philadelphia Flyers are starting to feel pressure from the non-playoff teams of the Eastern Conference, the New York Rangers enter Wednesday's rivalry night showdown coming off a disappointing loss to the struggling Buffalo Sabres.

"I haven't said this very often about this group since I have been here," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault told reporters after Tuesday night's 4-1 loss to the Sabres at Madison Square Garden, "but this was a very bad game, where we got outworked badly. We are going to have to respond here."

The Flyers (20-14-5) are coming off an 0-2-1 road trip to St. Louis, San Jose and Anaheim and have gone 1-4-2 since their 10-game win streak ended last month.

"This wasn't our best road trip," Flyers right winger Wayne Simmonds told Phillynews.com. "The games in St. Louis and San Jose, we thought we needed to compete harder and battle more. We did that (in Sunday's 4-3 shootout loss in Anaheim).

"Unfortunately, we didn't get the results, but sometimes it's not that you change the page overnight and get the results you want. You have to keep working at it."

The Flyers played well against the Ducks, tying a franchise record with 55 shots in a road game.

"We know we've been in a little bit of a lull, but if we keep playing like we did (Sunday), we'll be successful," defenseman Michael Del Zotto said.

The Flyers activated backup goaltender Michael Neuvirth (knee sprain) on Tuesday and sent callup Anthony Stolarz back to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Stolarz appeared in four games and had a 1.79 GAA and a .938 save percentage.

Steve Mason (14-12-5) has started 21 of the last 23 games for the Flyers and is expected to get the call on Wednesday.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist allowed four goals on 19 shots in the loss to the Sabres and could sit the second end of the back-to-backs in favor of Antti Raanta.

Vigneault might also opt to sit out defenseman Kevin Klein, whose turnover led to Justin Bailey's first NHL goal early in the second period.

If Klein is a healthy scratch, look for Adam Clendening to take his place.

Derek Stepan said the Rangers (26-13-1) need to turn the page quickly from one of their most lopsided losses of an otherwise impressive season.

"I wish I would had an answer," Stepan said when asked about what was ailing the Rangers. "Whoever figures that one out is going to be a very rich man or woman. ... For me, our execution tonight is really what surprised me. We just weren't even close."

The Rangers won the last meeting with the Flyers on Nov. 25, prevailing 3-2 win despite getting allowing 78 shot attempts in that game while generating 39.

The Flyers are hoping goals by Travis Konecny, his first in 23 games, and Sean Couturier, who missed five weeks and netted his first since Nov. 17, will help boost the club's secondary scoring.

Preview: Avalanche (12-24) at Flames (20-17)

Date: January 04, 2017 10:00 PM EDT

CALGARY, Alberta -- The Calgary Flames have enjoyed considerable success against teams below them in the NHL's Western Conference standings.

The Flames (20-17-2) want to keep that going when they host the Colorado Avalanche (12-24-1) at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday.

"We have some big divisional games with teams that are chasing us," Calgary captain Mark Giordano told Flames TV.

After facing the Avalanche, who they beat 6-3 in Denver on Dec. 27, the Flames will face the Canucks (18-18-3) in Vancouver on Friday before a rematch between the same two teams at the Saddledome the next night.

"We know they're going to be pushing - there's desperation," said Giordano, who admitted that the Flames didn't play their best game at home on New Year's Eve when they posted a 4-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes. "We've got to ramp it up here. It's all about trying to catch the teams that are ahead of you.

"We feel like we still have a good shot of getting into those top three spots (in the Pacific Division). We've got to try and focus on catching those guys. It's our job not to let anyone else back into it either, so we've got to take care of business."

Teammate Matt Stajan agreed that the Flames can't look past the Avalanche, who have lost four straight games and nine of their last 10.

"The focus is two points against Colorado and then we know what we have after that," Stajan said. "There's never an easy game in the NHL. You've got to be ready for every game.

"You've got to win a lot of games to get to the playoffs and we know that. We're in a position right now where we can control our own fate here and if we have a good stretch here, we'll keep pushing forward."

The Avalanche will be looking to bounce back from a 3-2 loss they suffered in Vancouver to the Canucks on Monday. Vancouver forward Sven Baertschi, a former Flame, scored the game-winning goal on a power play with 3:37 to play in the third period.

"Some of the penalties we're taking, it's getting repetitive, but that's what's biting us every night," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said after the game. "We keep repeating the same mistakes and it ends up costing us hockey games. Every mistake we make, it seems like other teams are capitalizing on them. We have to be better, it's that simple."

Against the Flames, Colorado will go with goalie Calvin Pickard in net for the sixth straight game. Pickard has started every game since Semyon Varlamov went down with a groin injury and he's played in 11 of Colorado's past 13 contests.

"I thought after a couple rough outings and some tough breaks at home that (on Monday) he really settled in and kind of got back to his game," Bednar said. "Made a lot of big saves for us and kept us in that hockey game and gave us a chance to win."

Colorado right winger Jarome Iginla, who played a club-record 1,219 games with the Flames from 1996 to 2013, talked to a large throng of reporters in Calgary on Tuesday about returning to his old stomping grounds once again.

"Lots of great memories, and I think it always will be (special)," said Iginla, who also leads the Flames in all-time points (1,095) and goals (525). "Not as strange each time. First it is quite an adjustment, and (I'm) more comfortable with each time. But always fun to come back, for sure."

Preview: Coyotes (11-21) at Canucks (18-18)

Date: January 04, 2017 10:00 PM EDT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- The Vancouver Canucks will try to avoid getting caught in a trap game again Wednesday night.

The suddenly surging Canucks (18-18-3) have a chance to achieve their longest win streak of the season -- five games - when they host the struggling Arizona Coyotes (11-21-5) at Rogers Arena.

The Coyotes have lost seven straight games and, on that basis, display the potential to trap the Canucks, who have developed a habit over the years of playing down to the level of their opposition.

In other words, the Canucks have been victimized in trap games -- contests in which clear underdogs pull off upsets when the favored team is looking ahead to games against a tougher opponent.

But the Canucks avoided getting caught in the Colorado Avalanche's trap Monday, as they posted their fourth straight win -- something they had not done since the opening games of the season.

It is clear that, with a chance to move above the playoff bar imminent, Vancouver players are not worried about getting trapped by any team right now.

"The Christmas break was huge for us to get refocused and ready to go and get guys back in the lineup," said center Bo Horvat, who has five points in as many games. "Having (Alex) Edler back on the back end is huge for us. I think having that little break gave us some time to think and some confidence going into these last four games."

The win over Colorado was not a masterpiece by any stretch. But the Canucks again demonstrated that they can be resilient when necessary.

The Canucks are also benefiting from an improved power play and strong goaltending.

"It's good to get some chances, get some momentum," said winger Daniel Sedin of the improved power play. "It feels good. We're a lot more confident stepping on the ice when (we're) scoring and creating chances."

According to Sedin, the Canucks have been playing with a different attitude since returning from the Christmas break.

"We talked about each guy being 5 percent better," he said. "That's the difference in this league from winning and losing. I think guys are really buying in right now and doing extra things for your line to be successful and for your team to be successful. It's great to see."

For coaches and fans, it is also great to see players other than Daniel Sedin and his twin brother Henrik lead the way offensively. While they have provided timely goals and assists during the streak, the Canucks have also been getting key contributions from some of their up-and-coming players.

Like Horvat, winger Sven Baertschi has been on a tear lately. Baertschi scored two goals, including the winner, against Colorado and now has six goals and five assists in the past 10 games. The production resulted after he was a healthy scratch against Washington on Dec. 11.

"I think he had something to prove," said Horvat. "He was playing well before that, too. Maybe (he had) a few rough games here and there. After he got sat out, he came back and he's been playing some of his best hockey I've seen him play."

Baertschi said the club's success has helped him personally.

"I've just been trying to feed off that and am obviously playing with some confidence right now," said Baertschi.

Meanwhile, the Coyotes do not have much to feel confident about. In addition to inconsistency, they have also been battling injuries during their skid. The biggest loss may be center Brad Richardson, who suffered a broken leg when the Coyotes visited the Canucks in mid-November.

Richardson's absence has magnified Arizona's lack of skill, experience and expertise at the critical center spot. Coach Dave Tippett has been experimenting with different center options, including Jordan Martinook, who is usually a winger.

But Tippett has not been satisfied with the results of his experiments.

"The center position, with Richardson's injury, has been sort of a sore spot," Tippett told The Arizona Republic. "Martinook has played very well there, but I'd like to get him back to the wing if we could. I think that's where he has the most impact on the game."

Alexander Burmistrov could provide more strength down the middle after being claimed on waivers Monday from Winnipeg, where he had fallen out of favor with Jets coach Paul Maurice.

However, Burmistrov may not be a candidate as an offensive catalyst since he had only two assists in 23 games with Winnipeg.

His work ethic and attitude have also been questioned. At any rate, he will not get a chance to help the Coyotes in Vancouver. Although he is expected to take part in Wednesday's morning skate and, possibly, the pregame warmup, the Coyotes have announced that he will not play before the weekend.

A player who could help is defenseman Kevin Connauton, a one-time Canucks prospect who played his junior hockey with the Vancouver Giants and should be pumped to put on a good show for old friends and ex-teammates. Connauton rejoined the Coyotes after being demoted to their Tucson-based farm team for a two-game conditioning stint at his own request.

He showed signs of his former offensive prowess, recording three points in the two games.

"It was a lot of fun," Connauton told the Coyotes' website regarding his time with Tucson. "I was excited to get down there and play. If you ask anyone, everyone just wants to play. Now, it's just about building off that and keep moving forward."

But as a team, the Coyotes have had trouble going forward lately -- and they appear unlikely to trap the Canucks.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Detroit Red Wings haven't scored a power-play goal on the road since Oct. 17 and are 1-for-36 overall in the last nine games heading into their matchup Wednesday night at the Anaheim Ducks.

The man-advantage slump has dropped the Red Wings into last in the NHL in power-play efficiency at 11.7 percent, a steep drop after they finished 13th last season (18.8).

"That really is crazy," Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall told the Detroit Free Press. "If you get one or two, it's a different game. That is going to be the biggest key. Moving forward, we have to get our power play going."

Detroit, which is 3-5-2 in its last 10 games, made a slight change to its power play during practice Tuesday, replacing Riley Sheahan on the second unit with Steve Ott, who worked with fellow forwards Anthony Mantha and Tomas Tatar.

The Ducks featured the top power play in the NHL last season at 23 percent and currently sit No. 2 behind the Columbus Blue Jackets, converting on 24 percent of their man-advantage opportunities.

Anaheim may have to play Detroit without one of its key players on the power play, as team captain Ryan Getzlaf left Sunday's shootout victory against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers with a lower-body injury.

Getzlaf received treatment while the rest of the team practiced Tuesday morning and showed improvement, according to assistant Coach Paul MacLean, but remains day-to-day.

"We'll come in tomorrow and see where he is," MacLean said.

As insurance, the Ducks recalled forward Chris Wagner from their American Hockey League affiliate in San Diego. Wagner, 25, has two goals in 21 games with Anaheim this season, as well as four goals 11 games with San Diego.

Detroit defenseman Mike Green still has not returned to the ice since he suffered an upper-body injury in a 6-4 win against the Ducks on Dec. 17 in Detroit. Green is one of seven Red Wings players currently on injured reserve.

Detroit center Darren Helm skated Tuesday, but remains week-to-week with a shoulder injury that's already sidelined him 20 games. Justin Abdelkader also skated but the veteran left wing will likely miss his 14th straight game with a knee injury.

Ducks goaltender John Gibson tied a franchise record while stopping 51 shots in Sunday's win against the Flyers and turned away four of five in the shootout. He would normally be due for a break, but backup Jonathan Bernier struggled against the Red Wings last month, allowing four goals on 21 shots before he was pulled in favor of Gibson.

Bernier then surrendered five goals three days later at the Montreal Canadiens. His only appearance since then was a four-minute stint against the Flyers on Sunday, when he replaced Gibson after the Flyers had scored their third goal of the game early in the second period. Bernier made one save before Gibson returned and blanked the Flyers the rest of the way.

Grand Salami - January

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Preview: Hawks (18-16) at Magic (16-20)

Date: January 04, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

There is usually a clear signal when the Orlando Magic are playing well. It does not take long to look at the box score to find that key missing ingredient or to watch a game and know something is different.

When young reserve point guard Elfrid Payton is playing well, the Magic are typically a much better team. The former 10th overall pick, who lost his starting spot but still plays the most minutes at point guard, is the key to the success for Orlando, which hosts the Atlanta Hawks at the Amway Center on Wednesday.

"He's competing," Magic coach Frank Vogel said about his young point guard last week. "It's my job to figure out if it's best to keep him where he is where he is having great success or move him back to the starting lineup.

"I would like to see him do this over a consistent stretch. And I may still keep him where it's at because he has had success there."

Payton, known for his passing ability more than anything else, has always been a bit difficult to figure out. He is averaging a career-best 11.4 points per game and dishing out 5.9 assists per game, but his shooting remains a concern.

Payton is shooting 45.3 percent from the floor but just 25.9 percent from beyond the arc. His two-point percentages have improved dramatically, making him a better offensive threat, but his play is still largely inconsistent.

In wins, Payton's play is significantly better. He averages 13.7 points per game and 7.1 assists per game. He makes 51.4 percent of his field goals and 39.0 percent of his 3-pointers in wins. That includes scoring a career-high 26 points, dishing out 14 assists and making 9 of 12 shots in an 11-point win over the Hawks in mid-December.

As the point guard controlling the tempo and aggression for the team, no player probably has more effect over the Magic than Payton and the production he accumulates.

The same might be said of Atlanta point guard Dennis Schroder.

Like Payton, Schroder came into the league known more for his defense and less for his shooting. The Hawks, though, turned the team over to their young point guard this season after trading longtime starter Jeff Teague.

Schroder is averaging a career-high 17.5 points and 6.3 assists per game thanks to the increased role. He is making 46.3 percent of his shots and 35.5 percent from beyond the arc, both career highs too.

In wins, Schroder averages 19.3 points per game and 6.2 assists per game while making 49.0 percent of his shots and 46.2 percent of his 3-pointers. Schroder also has a massive effect when he gets his offense going. That was proven in the Hawks' overtime win over the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday.

"I just try to help the team win games," Schroder told Hawks.com after a recent overtime win over the New York Knicks. "I try to lead the team. Whatever it takes, I try to do it and try to help my teammates out."

Schroder has done a good job leading the Hawks, putting them in good position in the already crowded Eastern Conference. His game already has taken itself to a new level.

Both the Magic and the Hawks are clearly better when their young point guards play at their best. All eyes will be on them Wednesday.

Preview: Thunder (21-14) at Hornets (19-16)

Date: January 04, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

The basketball world knows what Russell Westbrook has accomplished this season. The MVP front-runner has carried the Oklahoma City Thunder after the departure of Kevin Durant to Golden State, and he continues to record one triple-double after another.

About 1,100 miles to the east, Charlotte's Kemba Walker is quietly putting together a solid season on offense for the Hornets, and he is making a strong case to be an Eastern Conference All-Star.

The two will go head-to-head on Wednesday at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C., when the Hornets (19-16) host the Thunder (21-14) in what is expected to be a high-scoring affair.

The Thunder enter the game 6-4 in their past 10 games while the Hornets are 5-5.

In a 118-111 loss to Chicago on Monday, Walker led Charlotte with 34 points and 11 rebounds -- his fifth double-double of the season. He has scored a combined 71 points over the past two games, shooting a sizzling 63.4 percent.

The Thunder also took it on the chin against Giannis Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee and lost 98-94 in the first of three straight road games.

The Bucks made life difficult for Westbrook, who scored 30 points -- the 30th time he's reached that mark this season. He struggled from the field, making 9 of 28 field-goal attempts. He started off 6-for-11 but went 0-for-8 in the third quarter when the Bucks took their first lead.

Westbrook was clearly frustrated after the game, sitting in front of his locker, arms folded.

"I thought he had some good decent 3-point shots, I thought he had some good pull-up shots," Thunder coach Billy Donovan told the Daily Oklahoman. "Those are shots Russell practices every day. It's shots he's worked on. It's shots that's made him the player he is. A lot of his shots were shots he's more than capable of making."

Like every offensive star, Westbrook has a short memory and he should be emboldened by the fact that the Hornets allowed Chicago guard Jimmy Butler to score 52 points on Monday.

"Our defense is soft," Hornets coach Steve Clifford said after the game. "We can't just pick and choose when to play it."

If they do, Westbrook is sure to take advantage. He's been a triple-double machine this season, recording a league best 16 while leading the Thunder with 30.9 points per game.

Hornets guard Michael Kidd-Gilchrist draws the assignment to try to stop, or at least slow down Westbrook.

Clifford has his own scoring machine.

In his sixth season, Walker has become the team leader and offensive force many predicted when he came out of Connecticut. On Monday, he sparked an 8-1 Charlotte run to start the second half against the Bulls. The Hornets built an eight-point lead and then a familiar disaster struck -- the fourth quarter.

"It's been our problem for the last couple of games and the last couple of weeks," said forward Nicolas Batum, who leads the Hornets with 7.6 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game. "We just stop scoring and stop making plays. It was another big loss for us."

The Hornets will be without center Cody Zeller, who entered the league's concussion protocol on Monday. The team said in a statement that Zeller was struck by an elbow in Saturday's loss to Cleveland. There is no timetable for his return.

Zeller is averaging 10.7 points and 6.2 rebounds.

The Hornets also will be without sixth man Marco Belinelli (11 ppg), who has missed several games with a sprained ankle.

Preview: Bucks (17-16) at Knicks (16-18)

Date: January 04, 2017 7:30 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- The defensively challenged New York Knicks will face a tough test when the Milwaukee Bucks pay a visit to Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

The Knicks (16-18) have lost five straight in which they have allowed over 100 points in each game. They have the fifth-worst defensive rating in the league. Opponents are shooting 45 percent against New York, including .354 percent from beyond the arc.

The Knicks have lost 10 games by 11 points or more.

Adding to their worries, New York could be without second-year forward Kristaps Porzingis, whose status is uncertain due to an Achilles injury that has kept him out of the past two games.

In the Knicks' 115-103 loss at home to Orlando on Monday, the Magic tied their season high with 15 made 3-pointers. Three players scored at least 20 points and Nikola Vucevic and Elfrid Payton came off the bench to record their 17th and third double-doubles, respectively, this season. Vucevic scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Payton contributed 13 points and a career high-tying 14 assists.

"We have to find someone to play defense," Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek said. "We have to have better pride. When you give a team three or four straight 3-pointers right off the start, you give them hope.

"We didn't have enough fight to let them (Orlando) even take the shots. We might be good enough defensively. We might have to figure out ways to trap. Some of it is closeouts. Our guys were scrambling and we didn't get out to them."

The Bucks (17-16) feature the league's top offense when it comes to points in the paint and a rising star in 23-year-old shooting guard Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Antetokounmpo recorded his seventh straight game with 20-plus points, five-plus rebounds and five-plus assists in Milwaukee's 98-94 win over Oklahoma City on Monday. He finished the game with 26 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

His current streak is now the second-longest in franchise history (Kareen Abdul-Jabbar, 13 from Nov. 11-Dec. 6, 1972). Antetokounmpo also extended his career-best streak of games with 20-plus points to 12 and tallied his 15th double-double.

"You look at what he does on a consistent basis, that's what stars are measured on," Bucks coach Jason Kidd said. "Giannis isn't just about scoring the ball. He's able to make plays -- he makes winning plays -- and that's what stars do in this league. So for what he's done here, from the beginning of the season, you can see his confidence is growing."

Like his team, New York's leading scorer, Carmelo Anthony, is also in a slump. In the five-game losing streak, Anthony is shooting just .361 percent from the floor. He has contributed only two double-doubles this season, compared to 22 last season.

"We have to get back to the gym, back to the basics and try to find some practice time," Anthony said as a possible solution to the team's defensive struggles. "We have to go back to the drawing board and get some reps up."

The two squads meet again on Friday in Milwaukee.

Preview: Bulls (17-18) at Cavaliers (26-7)

Date: January 04, 2017 8:00 PM EDT

CLEVELAND -- Two teams with point guard issues square off Wednesday when the Cleveland Cavaliers host the Chicago Bulls. Both Kyrie Irving and Rajon Rondo have missed the last two games, but for far different reasons.

Irving has been sidelined with tightness in his right hamstring that the team doesn't believe is serious -- they haven't even done any medical testing on it to this point. Rondo remains benched and out of the Bulls' rotation.

The Cavaliers lost at Chicago in early December on the night LeBron James had to wear a Cubs' uniform into United Center to pay off a bet he lost to Dwyane Wade. It was also the night James declared the Cavaliers' "honeymoon" for winning the NBA championship was over. His team has responded by winning 13 of 15 since that loss.

The Bulls, however, are just 6-11 since that win against Cleveland.

Both teams are fighting injuries. Chicago rookie Denzel Valentine is not making the trip to Cleveland because of a left ankle injury and Wade will be a game-time decision with a sore knee. Then there is the Rondo saga.

Valentine was only getting extended minutes because Rondo has been benched. Yet despite him being out on Wednesday and Wade's status still questionable, Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg still won't commit to playing Rondo.

"We'll see how everything plays out," he told the Chicago Tribune. "We'll cross that bridge when and if that happens."

Kevin Love, meanwhile, played 24 minutes despite battling food poisoning during the Cavaliers' home win against New Orleans on Monday. Coach Tyronn Lue said Love believes he got it from eating a piece of fish on the team's flight home on New Year's Eve. Love was not himself on the floor Monday and ultimately left early in the fourth quarter and didn't return.

James also left the locker room Monday with a baggie full of medicine and admitted he wasn't feeling well as the flu continues to rip through the NBA.

"Can't have any excuses no matter what's going on with the team," James said. "Has to be next man up and when guys' numbers are called they've got to be ready to go."

The Cavaliers are down to 10 healthy bodies -- and that's counting Love. Lue was forced to cancel shootaround Monday due in part to a lack of bodies, although Cleveland will hold its typical morning walkthrough Wednesday prior to the game.

With both Irving and J.R. Smith sidelined, the Cavaliers have relied on a batch of fringe NBA players such as Jordan McRae, DeAndre Liggins and Kay Felder. McRae and Liggins have started in the backcourt the last two games with mixed results, while Felder has quietly been steady as the undersized rookie point guard drafted 54th overall last summer.

Felder has averaged 10.5 points in the two games Irving has missed, both of which came after he erupted for 33 points in his only D-League appearance this season. Felder acknowledged that night gave him a confidence boost and reminded him he can play at this level. He has proved it for the last week. Now his coach wants him to keep playing freely.

"Don't look over at the bench," Lue told him. "Just play your game. And if you're doing too much, I'll let you know. So don't keep looking at the bench and looking over your shoulder. Just play."

Preview: Grizzlies (22-15) at Clippers (23-14)

Date: January 04, 2017 10:30 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES -- Memphis coach David Fizdale hopes he doesn't witness a rerun of the exhibition his club performed Tuesday in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

On Wednesday, the Grizzles attempt to stage a much better showing when they face the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center.

The Grizzlies couldn't stop the hot-shooting Lakers or forward Julius Randle, who recorded a triple-double with 19 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. It was the first triple-double against Memphis in a span of 177 games (including 192 in the postseason), the longest streak in the NBA.

Fizdale just shook his head.

"We had our L.A. cool jacket on tonight," Fizdale said. "I don't know who we were performing for but it wasn't for each other. We just have a way of having this other team creep in with us. We show signs of greatness and then we are just zombies out there and tonight was one of those nights."

The Grizzlies (22-15) had won four of their last six before their debacle against the Lakers. The good news Tuesday was center Marc Gasol, who tweaked his left ankle in Saturday's victory over the Sacramento Kings, returned and collected a team-high 22 points, seven assists and six rebounds against the Lakers.

The bad? Gasol isn't a sure thing to play against the Clippers.

"I expect to be out there," Gasol said. "We'll see how the ankle reacts after the game (Tuesday). Obviously, it feels a little weak. I'm not as explosive by any means."

The once-hot Clippers temporarily put an end to their losing ways on Monday. A 109-98 win over the Phoenix Suns snapped a season-high six-game losing streak for the Clippers (23-14), who have been without point guard Chris Paul (sore left hamstring) and forward Blake Griffin (right knee surgery).

Paul missed the last three games and five of the past six. He is listed as doubtful for the Memphis game. Griffin, the leading scorer at 21.2 points per game, missed nine straight contests and isn't expected back for at least another 2-to-4 weeks.

Without them, the Clippers have endured their worst stretch this year. Before beating the Suns, the Clippers were pounded 114-88 by the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday and 140-116 by the Houston Rockets on Friday.

However, despite committing 20 turnovers, 12 of them coming off Phoenix steals, Los Angeles defeated the Suns with a solid defensive outing, holding them to 38.2 percent shooting. The Clippers also forced the Suns to miss 13 of their 15 attempts from 3-point range.

"We played with some urgency," said Clippers center DeAndre Jordan, who finished with 20 rebounds, nine points and three blocks. "I think that we wanted to win so bad that we were just (playing) too fast. That is why we had so many turnovers. I feel like we played the right way. We were just trying to get each other open. Our defense was a lot better."

The clubs split their two previous meetings this season. The Clippers won the initial one 99-88 on Nov. 4 in Memphis, while the Grizzlies earned a 111-107 decision Nov. 16 at Staples. Los Angeles captured five of its last seven contests against Memphis.
