Wednesday 08/19/09 service plays chatter/comps/requests & gm strategy...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

FYI, let's limit the comps to the first 2 pages, I need this thread to be used for chatter and what games members would like to pick up or split. Service thread getting way to much chatter. Ty.

Kansas City Royals vs. Chicago White Sox Kansas City Royals
-135 at 5DIMES > 7h.
The visitors have a young ace here, the home team has an aging starter who is close to being out of the rotation. Zack Greinke (11-7) has a 2.33 ERA with 174 KS in 166 innings. Jose A. Contreras (4-11) goes for the up and down White Sox, and he has been mostly down, with an ERA over 10 his last three starts. A good spot for the visitors. Play the Royals.

Colorado Rockies vs. Washington Nationals Total
9½ ov+100 at SPBOOK > 12h.
On Wednesday the Bonus Play is on the over in the Colorado at Washington game.Rotation numbers 905/6 at 7;05 eastern. The Rockies are 11-1 to the over off a road win in a certain hit range. This game also quaifies in nice 70% system that plays on the over for road favs off a road favored 1 run win if both teams scored 4 or less runs.In the pitching matchup the Rockies have J.Marquis going tonight. While he has been stellar all year,he has gone over the total in his last 3 starts.Wahington sends another youngster in Balester to the mound tonight. In his 5 starts this year he has not had an easy go of it.He has an elevated 6.00 era and has been hit hard.Colorado is also 6-1 over as a road favorite in this range, while the Nationals have gone over in 6 of their last 9 vs winning teams.Back the over here and wait till game time as this total may get down to nine flat.In the late phones I have the MLB Game of the Week. This play is backed with a huge 38-8 system. Our side has solid team angles in play and a decided pitching advantage.Jump on and get the full analysis of this big side.Top play on the Over in the Boston/Toronto game cashed on Tuesday.Wednesday will win too.For the Bonus Play take the Over in the Colorado-Wshingotn game. bol RV-

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers St. Louis Cardinals
+105 at BOOKM > 15h.
This is the third and final game of the Cardinals and Dodgers three-game series at Chavez Ravine. The Cardinals are ranked 15 in hitting with a batting average of .262 averaging 4.5 runs per game on the year while the Dodgers are ranked 3 in hitting with a batting average of .276 averaging 4.9 runs per game. The teams are much closer in the pitching department with the Cardinals ranked 4 with an ERA of 3.73 with opponents hitting .262 against them. The Dodgers are ranked 2 in pitching with an ERA of 3.63 with opponents hitting for a .233 average. Combine these factors and these teams are relatively close overall put Adam Wainwright on the bump as an underdog and we have solid value with the Cardinals tonight. Wainwright is 14-7 this season with an ERA of 2.62 with the Cardinals 17-8 (+4.9) behind him on the hill. He has been overwhelming on the road this season posting a record of 9-1 with an ERA of 3.41 with the Cards 10-1 (+9.0) when he starts on the highway. He is 8-0 (+9.0) when playing against a team with a winning record in the second half of the season over the last 2 seasons, 10-1 (+9.1) versus teams outscoring opponents by 0.5 or more runs per game on the season the last 2 seasons, 11-1 (+10.0) when the money line is +125 to -125 this season, 8-1 (+8.1) as a road underdog of +100 or higher the last 2 seasons, 8-1 (+8.1) as a road underdog of +100 to +150 the last 2 seasons and 7-0 (+7.1) on the road when the money line is +125 to -125 this season. The Cards are playing extremely well and they are sending an ace to the bump which should translate into a nice underdog win on Wednesday night in LA.

Graded Selection: 2* St. Louis Cardinals 3 Los Angeles Dodgers 2

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

Seattle Mariners at Detroit Tigers

The Tigers added some insurance to their slim two-game lead over the American League Central by adding slugger Aubrey Huff to the lineup in a deal with the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday.

Huff, who is hitting .253 with 13 home runs this season, will settle into the designated hitter spot in Detroit’s lineup. The veteran infielder should give the Tigers offense some extra pop heading into the final month of the season and playoffs. Detroit currently ranks 16th in the majors in average runs (4.62) and 22nd in batting average (.258).

"He adds another lefthanded bat to our ballclub and is a middle-of-the-lineup type hitter," Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski told reporters. "We've worked on trying to get a bat for a while."

The Tigers have played under the total in three of their last four games as of Monday. But for the month, they have an over/under record of 11-5. Heading into Tuesday, Detroit and Seattle have also played over the posted total in 10 of their last 13 games in the Motor City, including going 2-1 over/under in April.

Pick: Over

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets

Mets third baseman David Wright joined fellow superstars Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado on the disabled list after taking a fastball to the head this past weekend.

Wright, who had never been on the 15-day DL in his six-year MLB career, suffered a concussion Saturday and isn’t sure when he’ll be cleared to play by team doctors.

Wright was one player keeping the injury-prone Mets afloat for most of the season. He was hitting a team-best .324 BA with eight home runs and 55 RBI along with solid play in the infield. Now, without the All-Star third baseman, New York’s lineup features bats like Fernando Tatis, Dan Murphy and Anderson Hernandez.

The futile offense was outscored 10-1 Monday by the San Francisco Giants, who are one of the worst hitting teams in the majors. In the four games against the Giants, the Mets scored just 11 runs and are hitting a combined .267 in August heading into Tuesday’s game with Atlanta. The Braves open this series with a 4-1 mark in their last five games against New York.

Pick: Atlanta

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Adam Wainwright (14-7, 2.62 ERA), St. Louis Cardinals

If it weren’t for Tim Lincecum, Wainwright would be the frontrunner for this year’s National League Cy Young award.

The towering righty has gone 10 straight starts without surrendering more than two earned runs. He hasn’t walked a batter in his last three starts and he leads the NL with 14 wins.

Need more?

He’s pitched at least six innings in each of his last 23 starts. The Cards have also won seven of his last eight outings.

Cliff Lee (10-9, 2.86 ERA), Philadelphia Phillies

Halladay who?

This former Cleveland ace is loving life in the Senior Circuit. The Phillies have won each of Lee’s three starts and the southpaw owns a sparkling 1.13 ERA with his new club.

He’s pitching deep into games and is striking out batters by the handful. The under has cashed in seven of his last eight appearances and he still hasn’t been priced higher than -170.

Slumping

Jose Contreras (4-11, 5.40 ERA), Chicago White Sox

Is there any pitcher in baseball less deserving of a $10 million price tag?

The Cuban product hasn’t pitched past the fifth inning since July 24. He got dinged for six runs over 4 1-3 innings last time out and he hasn’t produced a quality start since the beginning of last month.

Baseball betting's best under umps

Betting baseball’s boys in blue is a seldom-used practice that can lead to huge profits, especially when wagering on MLB totals.

The umpires working the lowest-scoring games come in all categories - big and small, young and experienced, argumentative and passive.

However, the ones at the top of the list are providing consistent returns better than any team totals play on either side. The best are operating at nearly 75 percent.

There are nearly seven weeks left in the season, leaving plenty of time to track the men in blue with the best under records and collect a little coin.

We used a cutoff of 20 games, so honorable mention goes to Brian Runge, the only third-generation umpire in history who worked Jonathan Sanchez's no-hitter. The under is 14-5 when Runge is behind the plate.

James Hoye (Seven years)

The least experienced of the group with seven years (He was a substitute ump for five years), Hoye was a computer science major who once drove a beer truck in the offseason.

Hoye has the highest average total of anyone on this list at 8.6 runs. But that is a very low number league-wide. The under is 19-8 when Hoye works the plate, including 7-1 when the number is 8.5 or lower.

Jeff Kellogg (16 years)

The under is 17-8 with Kellogg, who called Anibal Sanchez's no-hitter in September 2006. He also worked last year's World Series.

Kellogg's strike percentage of 61.0 is the lowest of any umpire who has been behind the plate at least 20 times. That's somewhat odd considering he also is tied for the lowest average total of 7.8 runs.

John Hirschbeck (25 years)

The only crew chief in this group, Hirschbeck and brother Mark were umps from 1988-2003, the first set of umpiring brothers. He is best known for get spat on by Roberto Alomar during a heated argument in 2006.

Hirschbeck has worked two World Series and also was behind the plate for Barry Bonds' record-breaking 756th home run. He is tied for the best under mark at 17-6.

Andy Fletcher (Nine years)

The only ump to wear a mouthguard to protect against concussions, Fletcher gave Coco Crisp a three-ball walk about a year ago. However, he also is credited with using Terry Francona as a conduit to teach a hopeful minor leaguer named Michael Jordan how to respectfully disagree with umps while working in the Southern League in the 1990s.

Fletcher, who has never worked the postseason, is tied with Kellogg for the lowest total average at 7.8 runs. When he works the plate, those games average just 1.40 homers, the second-lowest mark. Both of those stats help contribute to his under mark of 15-7.

Ted Barrett (12 years)

A former amateur boxer and devout Christian (How's that for a dichotomy?), Barrett is one of the best young umpires in the game, working six Division Series, an ALCS and a World Series. In his first full season, he called David Cone's perfect game in 1999.

Barrett is tied with Hirschbeck for the best under mark at 17-6, including a 5-1 record when the number is 8.5 runs or lower. His 8.1 average runs are second-lowest among this group and his average homers (1.58) is third behind Fletcher and Larry Vanover (1.38).

As an added bonus, Barrett and Fletcher have worked in the same crew many times this season.

MLB: Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates - Pirates +1.5 (Gallardo/Maholm) -110
Game Date: 8/19/2009
Note: What is going on with these Brewers? They are, as we say in the Dugout "Stinking Up The Joint." Losers of their last 3 games and two of them to these Pirates. They are not only losing, they are losing badly. The Brewers, who had won 20 of 23 over Pittsburgh prior to this series own the majors' seventh worst record since July 1 at 16-23. And they are a Huge Favorite on the road? Well shoot myself!! The Pirate offense is coming around in a big way and they are having fun playing baseball. We have seen them hit 5 Homers in the first two games of the series and we have seen them POUND Righthanded pitching here at PNC to the tune of a .286 batting average all year. I do know that Maholm is struggling right now, but he has been much better at this park than on the road and he will be throwing at Milwaukee's weakest hitting point, verses lefties. Gallardo is a quality pitcher but it takes more than a starter to make a team and the fact is, the Brewers have won just 3 of his last 9 starts. As good as Yovani is, he does have control issues a lot and he has been having those lately with 7 BB's in his last 2 efforts. The Brewers are slowly, no they are fastly, seeing their Playoff Hopes go down the drain. There are some harsh words from the Milwaukee Press, and some Dugout problems as well with everybody pointing fingers at everyone. This Team is not in a good frame of mind. I am going to grab these 1.5 runs tonight and I feel right smart in doing so.

100♦ PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES RUN LINE (WITH Lee for sure going for Philly) - Point blank, I’m not ignoring the Cliff Lee revival in the City of Brotherly Love. He is in after eight strong innings against the Cubs at Wrigley Field last Thursday, when Lee allowed six hits, one run and three walks while striking out eight. Since moving over to the National League from the Indians, the Cy Young southpaw is 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA in three starts for the Phillies.

He’s dominated foes, allowing 16 hits, three runs and six walks in 24 innings. He’s fanned 24 batters and opponents are hitting a bleak .193 against him. Here’s the irony, last season CC Sabathia was traded to Milwaukee, he went 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA in his first three starts. He allowed 17 hits, six runs, five earned runs, one home run and six walks in 24 innings. He struck out 24 and opponents hit .205 against him. It must be a trade-thing, cause it’s working, and the Phils are this year’s beneficiary. Lay the run line, as Arizona gets nowhere and the Phils roll.

100♦ TAMPA BAY RAYS RUN LINE (WITH Niemann for sure going for Tampa) - I’ll bank on the defending American League champions tonight, as Jeff Niemann will be looking to turn things around as he comes in off another four-run outing as he was tagged for four runs in 5-1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Angels last Wednesday. He started the month of August surrendering just one run over eight innings to the Royals at the start of August, but the right-handed rookie has now given up four runs in back-to-back outings, and has a 6.17 ERA in those two starts.

I’ve watched the 26-year-old pitch, and he’s going to dominate the Orioles once again. He’s pretty familiar with the O’s, as this will be Niemann's fifth game – his fourth start - of his career against them -- the team he's faced the most; he's 3-1 with a 5.30 ERA against. Okay, so I don’t necessarily like the ERA, but I think I’ll be okay against Baltimore starter Chris Tillman. Lay the run line tonight for a blowout win.

100♦ TORONTO BLUE JAYS RUN LINE (WITH Halladay for sure going for Toronto) - Having settled back down since the trading deadline, Roy Halladay appears to be back to his old self again. He’s in off a Halladay-like dominating performance on Friday night, when he held the aforementioned Rays to a meager one earned run over eight innings for his second successive win. It also marked the Major League-leading 21st time in 23 starts this season the former Cy Young winner and 2009 candidate has logged at least seven frames.

Over his past two starts, the 32-year-old veteran is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA. Though he was 1-4 with a 3.16 ERA in his previous eight trips to the mound, he’s shed those doldrums and will come in with plenty of confidence in facing the Red Sox. In his lone start this season against Boston on July 19, Halladay turned in a complete-game victory.

It might be pricey to lay a run line against this team, but with Clay Buchholz on the hill, the Jays should have no trouble getting some runs in my opinion. They’re in revenge, as his first start in his return to the rotation was here in Rogers Centre, on July 17. He stifled them to one earned run over 5-2/3 innings and scattered just four hits for the win. The tide turns tonight. Lay the run line.
