FYI, let's limit the comps to the first 2 pages, I need this thread to be used for chatter and what games members would like to pick up or split. Service thread getting way to much chatter. Ty.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox (-230, 9)

Detroit manager Jim Leyland sometimes comes off as a crotchety old fart.

And it’s not just because he looks like an unmasked bad guy from Scooby Doo. Leyland is legendary for his tirades. His most recent grumblings came after the Tigers bullpen allowed the Boston Red Sox to steal a 6-5 win Monday.

Relievers Fu-Te Ni and Zach Miner allowed two runs including a home run after starter Edwin Jackson struggled to get out of the blocks in the series opener. This past weekend, Detroit’s bullpen gave up a total of 12 runs in three games against the Minnesota Twins. The Tigers managed to win 2-of-3 contest but nearly blew those victories late in the game.

"Those guys have to do a job," Leyland told the Detroit News. "You can't use Lyon, Seay and Fernando Rodney every night. It just doesn't work like that.”

All three of those weekend tilts played over the oddsmakers’ total as well as Monday’s opener with the Red Sox. The Tigers have an over/under mark of 8-2 in August and a hefty team ERA over 6.00.

Pick: Over 9

Tampa Bay Rays at Los Angeles Angels (+107, 10.5)

Just like the A-Team, the Los Angeles Angels love it when a plan comes together.

The pieces are falling in place for the Halos, who appear ready for a late-season push which would put them in full stride for the postseason. The first sign of this cohesion is the red-hot bat of designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero.

Guerrero knocked two home runs out of Angel Stadium against the Rays Monday and has hit four dingers in his last five games heading into Tuesday. For August, the free-swinging veteran is batting over .300 and is almost fully recovered from a laundry list of ailments.

“He’s made a career out of hitting pitchers’ pitches and balls off the plate, and he does damage with them,” Rays reliever Russ Springer, who gave up Guerrero’s second home run, told the media. “I threw the ball where I wanted to throw it and he hit the right field foul pole with it.

“I’ve never faced in my career a guy that covers as much of an area that he does … When he’s locked in, he has a big area that he can make contact with.”

Adding to the Angels’ growing momentum is improved production from the bottom of the order, continued power from Kendry Morales and the probable return of Torii Hunter this weekend.

Pick: Los Angeles +107

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox)

The right-hander has eight outings this season in which he has not allowed an earned run, including his last two and five of his last nine starts.

Beckett has a string of 14 consecutive scoreless innings, giving up 10 hits and four walks while striking out 12 batters. He had strings of 18 2-3 and 16 scoreless innings in June.

Beckett has not lost at Fenway Park this season.

Bud Norris (Houston Astros)

While other established pitchers such as A.J. Burnett and Ricky Nolasco are in nice grooves, this rookie right-hander is off to a solid start.

Norris has surrendered just eight hits and struck out 12 batters in 13 innings in his two starts, both of which were wins. He has had a little trouble with control and needed 105 pitches to get through six innings his last time out.

Norris walked 53 hitters in 120 innings at Triple-A Round Rock, where he had a 2.63 ERA. He has lasted six innings in his last 12 starts at both levels.

Debuting

Jeff Samardzija (Chicago Cubs)

Yeah, we know about the guy Samardzija is facing. But the former Notre Dame football standout is making his first major league start.

A 6-foot-5 righty, Samardzija has made 42 relief appearances over his first two seasons. He was sharper as a rookie last year, beginning this season in the minor leagues.

The Cubs have tried to stretch out Samardzija with three outings of at least three innings, including a four-innings stint in his last appearance August 7. He was scored on in all three of those outings.

Trevor Bell (Los Angeles Angels)

The 22-year-old right-hander is making his major league debut, taking the rotation spot of Joe Saunders, who went on the DL with shoulder tightness.

"Trevor's shown the command and stuff that we hope he can do at least, or maybe more, than some guys (on the club) who are options," Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the Los Angeles Times, adding that Bell would get more than one start.

Bell should be ready. He was 4-3 with a 2.23 ERA in 11 starts for Double-A Arkansas and 3-4 with two shutouts and a 3.15 ERA for Triple-A Salt Lake in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He is not a strikeout pitcher, collecting just 89 K's in 140 innings.

Slumping

Mark Buehrle (Chicago White Sox)

Mr. Perfect?

Really?

Yes, really.

The left-hander has been awful since his masterpiece against Tampa Bay. In his last three starts, he has been pounded for 17 runs and 28 hits in just 18 1-3 innings, taking three straight losses.

Not a big strikeout pitcher, Buehrle had six in his perfect game. He has had five since.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. New York Yankees Toronto Blue Jays
+210 at BETUS > 6h.
1* Take the Toronto Blue Jays on the Moneyline, The Blue Jays should have closed out the game last night leading 4-3 in the 8th but their bullpen blew it for them. The Jays have a better pitcher on the mound this afternoon than they did last night and Ricky Romero (10-5, 3.66) has pitched solid on the road this season with an ERA of just 3.69 over 9 starts. Romero has lasted an average of 6.8 innings per start on the road this season and he already beat the Yankees in New York back on July.6 where he allowed 7 hits and 3 earned runs over 6.3 innings. The Jays are a perfect 5-0 in Romero's last 5 starts as an underdog and they are also 8-2 in Romero's last 10 starts when pitching with 4 days rest. The Jays are one of the better hitting team on the road this season hitting .280 as a team and there is simply just too much value to pass up Wednesday afternoon. Take the Toronto Blue Jays as my MLB Bonus Play for Wednesday afternoon.

Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners Total
7½ ov+100 at BOOKM > 15h.
This is a total the general public will in all likelihood stay away from. Since the novice bettors love to play the over they are sure to be scared away with both teams aces taking the hill. However since Mark Buehrle tossed his no hitter he has struggled in the 3 starts since. In those 3 outings Buehrle has posted a very lofty 8.35 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP. The Seattle starter Felix Hernandez has been shaky in his last 3 starts posting a 5.79 ERA and 1.77 WHIP. Hernandez has an ERA of 2.09 higher at home than on the road in 2009. Seattle has gone over the total in 7 of their last 8 games. The White Sox have gone under in just 3 of the last 11. Play on this game to go over the total as my free selection of the night.

(967) TORONTO BLUE JAYS
(968) NEW YORK YANKEES
Take "(967) TORONTO BLUE JAYS"

Toronto has had a nice run, taking two in a row from the Orioles before upsetting the Yankees in Game 1 of this series. Lefty Ricky Romero has been very good all season, at 10-5 with a 3.66 ERA. He's already beaten the Yankees once this season, allowing 3 runs in 6+ innings, and the team is 7-3 his last 10 starts. A.J. Burnett is just 1-1 against his old team this season, with a 4.30 ERA. The visitors are a very live dog. Play the Blue Jays.

(959) PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
(960) CHICAGO CUBS
Take "(959) PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES"

I had the Phillies for my 10 Star play on Tuesday and they came through with the victory. Pedro Martinez makes his anticipated return here and he draws Jeff Samardzija as an opponent. I have to give Pedro the edge on the mound and with the streaky Phillies finally back in the win column, look for them to get the job done again today.

Rays -122

Both the Rays and Angels were in the playoffs last season and both have their eyes set on making the dance this year. At the start of the season you wouldn't have been called crazy if you predicted both teams to make the playoffs and battle it out for the right to represent the American League in the World Series.

That can still happen but right now they are both battling to make the playoffs.
The Rays are 61-51, a very solid record, but since they play in the AL East that record is only good enough for third place. Tampa currently sits 8.5 games behind the Yankees and their best bet at making the postseason is the AL Wild Card. The Rays are 2.5 games behind the Red Sox for the Wild Card.

This afternoon the Rays send Jeff Niemann to the mound; on the year he's 10-5 and the Rays are a money-making 14-6 in his 20 starts. The Rays have won 12 of his last 15 starts overall and nine of his last 12 road starts. Niemann has been a pleasant surprise and a big reason why the Rays are still in contention.

The Angels always seem to make the playoffs but this season's injuries have hurt them though not too much if you look at the standings. LA has a 66-44 record good enough for the division lead in the AL West. Last year the Angels had their division locked by the start of the second half but this season it's more of a battle. The Angels are 4.5 games up on the Texas Rangers who are playing very well this season.

The Angels find themselves the underdog in this one because they are sending a rookie pitcher to the mound. The Angels have several good trends behind them to justify taking them but this afternoon the pitching edge has to go to the Rays and that's why they'll take this one.

Play on Tampa Bay.

White Sox-Mariners Over 7½ (+105)

Our Wednesday night selection is on the Chicago White Sox and Seattle Mariners going over the total at Safeco Field.

Call it the "Jinx of Perfection." Since Chicago's ace Mark Buehrle pitched the 18th perfect game in Major League history on July 23, the veteran southpaw has gone 0-3 with an 8.35 ERA and he also lost back-to-back home starts for the first time since September of 2006.

In a move that the Sox hope will produce some runs and boost their offensive output, Chicago claimed Alex Rios off of waivers from the Blue Jays and, in doing so, will assume his huge contract. But the Sox front office thinks this waiver claim is not only worth the money it will have to spend, but necessary if they are to keep pace with the higher-powered offense of the Tigers.

Like Buehrle, Seattle's righthander Felix Hernandez had been cruising along in June and July but has all of the sudden run into some trouble in his last three starts, going 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP over 18 2/3 innings. In two August starts, Hernandez – who normally has excellent control – walked 10 batters in 13 innings and he was very lucky to get through his last start against Tampa Bay only surrendering three earned runs in six sub-par innings of work. Perhaps the high innings and pitch counts (he threw 113 pitches in the Tampa game) are finally starting to catch up to King Felix.

Heading into tonight, the Over is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings of these two clubs.

Take the Over.

Scott rickenback anyone? He's been on fire 25-6 last 31

Go ahead an jump on a hot handicapper and see how you like it when he comes back down to earth. Remember if this guy were as good as this record, we all would be playing his plays, and we are not even considering buying his plays!!!!!

Kelso Stugeon got hot last football season. Why don't we pay him big bucks and watch him lose this season? NOT!!!!!!
