They Could Have traded for the 5th pick before, but they made young Eli get Booed, humiliated, and almost cry on national T.V.
This was nothing but an caculated plan by the chargers to make the Mannings pay for exsposing them as one of the wost and poorly managed organizations in sports. Why would they tell the Media that Eli dose not want to be drafted by them???
He got SCREWED

if in fact SD leaked the info... it may have been loose lips somewhere to start, but they magnified it because they are not willing to pay 1 round first pick money to a QB anymore. ala Ryan Leaf. SD mgmt liked rivers the whole time, but they couldn't afford NOT to pick manning for fear of more public backlash (we hate 'em here) for not taking what most consider the premier QB. So leaking the info was/is the way out of NOT having to take manning and come up with 1st overall pick $$. the leak can be viewed as hurting our leverage as well. i think the leak may have been a mistake on someones part to begin with, but they then publicized to take the angle i just described.

How did he get screwed? Screw him. Dont come out and whine like a little baby about not wanting to go play in San Diego (although as a QB would you wanna play for Schottenheimer?)
As a Giants fan I am glad they got him but would rather have had Rothleisberger and I think SD did well to get Rivers and a slew of picks for Manning.

NJ sports,

I agree Eli was the one being a cry baby. I can understand why he wouldn't want to play for SD but to make your dad come out and say all that stuff and him not having any balls to say anything himself.

He got what he wanted but it made him look very immature, although i was surprised he walked out there to hold up the SD jersey.

IMO the giants gave up to much.

If the giants do bad next year (last in NFC east, i predict) the Chargers get 2 top picks.

Think of adding Mike Williams (next year or supplemental draft) and adding a LB like a Derrick Johnson (Texas).

San Diego did great as long as Rivers is a productive QB

guys im in san diego and im a big bolt fan. the chargers never had a plan to take manning.they loved rivers since the senior bowl. however the pressure was on aj smith to make the manning pick only to gain fan support for a new stadium proposal in 2006. they would have drafted the manning name more than what ever talent he may have. but then old arch came out and nuked the chargers putting them in a horrible national light. yes aj smith leaked this ..he had to. to save face with charger fans not everyone else. if this were kept secret and he traded the pick away and got rivers with the 4th pick the bolt facility would have been burned to the ground.by making the mannings feelings public it created alot of hatred for the mannings and gave the chargers alot of sympathy. so what if the mannings were upset. this clown hasnt a quarter of the talent john elway had when he refused the baltimore colts to go play for the yankees. forever now when ever eli mannings name or career is brought up it will begin with this weeks events, and his little boy attitude didnt fly here with ryan leaf and it wont fly in new york. congrats NY you just landed another over rated over hyped kid just like leaf. unfortunately peyton will pay for this too.what did eli manning expect for the 1st pick in the draft? to be chosen by new england? drug test him fast!trust me 60 million dollars looks the same wether its in ny or sd. and before anyone says the mannings were concerned about this clubs future and why key over paid players were let go it was to afford the 1st pick. the manning clan can go to hell.and we didnt get enough for that guy. if i were aj smith id have gotten next years #1 AND amani toomer.i know giant fans were hoping for O line help more than eli but ernie accorsi must have been doing mrs manning to have had such a hardon for her son.

I`m not a fan of either tm, so this is an objective view (a rarity for me)! Don`t really see the kid as a crybaby, wrong maybe but I didn`t see any whining, and Archie has always been a class act. Having said that I like the way it ended for S.D. I do have some experience as a fan in a like situaton. All I have to say is I`m from Mpls. and does the name Herschel Walker ring a bell? We gave Dallas the start of a dynasty and got ZIP in return. If I have a tm that needs MUCH help I`ll always take the draft choices over 1 player.

mike lynn ruined that vikings team believing they were 1 good running back away from a championship. but he decimated his defense and it ranks as the worst trade in nfl history. lynn has to be the most hated inept man in vikings history. as for eli i think telling everyone hes sitting out the season if hes taken by the chargers goes beyond whining. its a temper tantrum that should raise red flags to the giants. im pleased with the bolts draft. philip rivers is excited to be coming and we love him already. aj smith did a good job in his 1st draft since john butlers death.hes got a mess to clean up ridding the roster of butlers bad decisions and over paying for non productive players.thats john butlers legacy as the general manager of this team and he did the same thing to buffalo before coming here.i hope eli is as great as he thinks he is but the expectations may be too high in new york.it was a fun draft tho huh?

Yeah I always enjoy it, but I`m a FB junkie. I`ll stop and watch kids play in the street. Lynn was indeed an AHole. I think we did pretty well the last 2 days, didn`t expect Udeze to fall to us. Hope his shoulder isn`t too serious. Green would NEVER have drafted 3 for the D. We need a pass rush from the outside badly. My favorite all time Charger was #19.

bambi. lance alworth still lives here and keeps a real low profile.alot of the old bolts live here and its not hard to run into a few. i loved the bolts thru the coryell years then bobby ross.schottenheimer is all wrong for us. his kid brian is QBs coach and took a 2 time heisman finalist and big 10 passing champion in drew brees and wrecked him.im sure even archie manning saw that and it had to be his biggest concern.i hate whats happing here but its the only nfl team we have and its better than having nothing.

They had to do it.....sh*t where is this league headed if kids can dictate where they are going. If someone does not want to play somewhere ...fine .....they can sit out 3 years........that is what the NFL needs to do ..change it to 3 years .....and then they can go back into the draft. .......Did you guys listen to some of the chit he was saying .... about his decision and he would not play there ..blah blah .......he was whiny and spoiled ....because with his Dad being Archie and I am sure he could afford sitting out with a little loan from Peyton.

I love how diverse this forum is ...and how different minds have opinions .....but I cannot see how one person could see the other way in this, period.

Be careful what you wish for Eli. The NFC East is no longer a joke, the NY media is absolutely ruthless, and your HC Tom C. is a real prick that will ride the hell out of you.
Not to mention the endless locker room jokes like "Eli ask your dad if you can go out tonight."
Welcome to the league rookie!

OK here`s how one person could see the other side. Say you`re a top flight engineer, top 2% national GPA, just graduating from Purdue. And GM says you can ONLY work for us @ our location in bumfu*k Egypt, period no other choice!! How does that sound? The NFL has a lucrative FREE built in minor league in the NCAA. This is the only chance to challenge the system, once the first contract is siged all control is lost. That`s the other side. Actually I like the draft but being forced to play or work where a person doesn`t want to, runs contrary to our basic freedoms. Just a thought.
