Just being honest here, but I think this just illustrates the problem with this business. Almost every one around the industry in CR seems to just look to hire from two categories of people:

1. Family
2. Competitors

If the industry wants to stay fresh and come up with good ideas, this insistence on basically poaching someone from another operator or putting in a family member has to stop. I mean really all you can get is someone that is disgruntled or underpaid. Neither really is what I would call a plus factor. Smart businesses from all walks of life hire for character and energy and worry little about if the person did the same exact job for someone else.

The reality of this business is that many talented people from other industries do NOT want to work in the offshore gambling industry. It is VERY difficult to recruit people to our industry. It is also VERY expensive to do so.

During the busiest times of the year, by hiring from within the industry, you have someone that is qualified to to run from day one. Things are hard enough in this industry as it is without a 2-4 month leadtime for such a key position as this.

As for hiring family members, well that is just not relevent and I believe you are talking about a totally different thing: bookies hiring key people based upon trust. That is not relevent in this case.

We would be insane not to ask if there was anyone already in the industry with the right knowledge that was looking for a new challenge. Why wouldn't we do this? Contary to what you claim, it is possible to hire dedicated, talented people that are enthusiastic about a new challenge. If you hire from outside the industry, is there not a risk that you will get a disgruntled person?

You may note that there are a lot of people in this industry who have strong background from other industries - I know bookies who have only been in the business a couple of years, but came from finance, accounting or management consultancy. The majority of people I have met in marketing worked outside the industry long before they came to this one and all bring with them the skills and perspectives of those markets to our own.

We will always do our best to find the best people whether they be inside or outside the industry, but we will always, always ask around to see if there is someone already here with the right knowledge and talent.

If promotional people are kept from inside the industry, the same tired campaigns will be tried. It amazes me how little new ideas have come up in recent times. Everyone offers similar bonuses and cries the similar cries when bonus whores take advantage of them. The industry, the casino side namely, is just full of drones.

Reason I bring the "experience" side up is that when I was negotiating a potential job with the book, the owner wanted to slash the pay because I lacked "experience" with a book. I was going to be one of these outsiders that came in with a finance background and I was far from disgruntled...until this guy tried to bargain with me on a non-issue. In marketing I think the need for outside blood is even stronger. Any quality marketing guy can figure out what is being done in the industry in about a day. Just look at all the books out there, do you see unique ideas? I don't, I just see similar bonuses. The position is important, but not as important as you think if all it will bring in is a guy with a slight twist on old ideas.

WB: I certainly do accept your point regarding the same old marketing concepts being used time and time again. It is bewildering at times.

I am also sorry to hear about your experience getting employment with a book. Does not sound like the kind of person anyone would like to work for!

My main point is that hiring from within the industry does not automatically mean that the person will only rehash old concepts. There are a number of highly talented individuals. Some books just don't hire qualified marketing staff at all. They do it themselves. In this situation, you WILL get the same old material.

One disadvantage of getting someone in from outside the industry is that they sometime have difficulty operating within the restrictions of the offshore legal industry. It is hard to push bounderies without running foul of the law, getting media partners to co-operate (they often don't want to work with books and casinos), and running promotions that work. When time is literally money, an insider often knows which are the obvious pitfalls to avoid.

If there are any talented marketing individuals out there who would be interested in this position, please let Angelle know. Also, if you know anyone outside the industry who might have the potential to enjoy themselves and to be successful then get them to contact Angelle also.

Knowing the when, where and how takes experience.

Does not matter if you are family or not. If you know, you know. You know?
