Tekari- Depends alot on where you work. Personally worked in 4 different casinos so if there are any specific questions other than the ones above maybe I can assist you.

As far as bartending in a casino, you will have to start off as a barback for at least 6 months probably. Like I said, your pay is going to vary greatly from place to place and gig to gig. Lots of good jobs for bartenders reside in all the local bars throughtout the city and you do not have to put up with all the casino BS then also.

For those of you thinking of getting into the Race and Sports business, writers typically start out in the $60-80 range. You can work your way up to being a supervisor possibly in 2-3 years which will land you $100-120 a day. Although the job is fun, you will have to put up with alot of BS. This is the business I was in for 9-10 years and worked my way all the way to the top, so again if you or anybody have questions regarding this particular career, would be more than happy to assist you.

Strut, where do they make 60-80 day? Most jobs I have heard about make 7-8/hour on 30 hours a week. A lot of places actually won't even hire you full-time for 3 to 6 months. I was told by someone this is to thin out the guys that aren't really good at customer service, they just like sports a lot.

Poker dealing in Vegas is a chore. A few rooms make good wages, but most have too many dealers so you get too few downs. If you want to deal poker and make a good wage at it, you have to be in California. There dealers make 50k or more on just 4 shifts a week. In Nevada I think the average is about 25-30k and you have to deal with smokers except at the Bellagio/Mirage. Most dealers say the best place to work is the Orleans because they have so many games going usually, but places like that even if you are a good dealer it can take years to get a full-time gig.

Bill- If you start out and make 8.00 an hour and work 8 hours, that is $64 a day. You are correct though, one may find it hard to get 40 hours in during the week.....especially when football is not in season. Again, alot depends on what casino you work for and who you know in the biz. Personally, I have practically worked with someone at one time or another at every sportsbook in Vegas.

Getting a supervisors job paying $110++ a day is not a bad little gig.

Most supervisors I know work far more than 40 hours a week though to get that $500-600/week. Most I know say it is a terrible job, not much better than restaurant management since all it is about is dealing with customers. Without the interaction of the sharp players that Vegas used to see not that long ago, I think I can see why most people say it isn't that great. Then again a lot of people in Vegas are stuck in worse jobs, just fortunately not me

Well I was thinking say 35 hands/hour. Dealer gets about $1 per hand in tips. So that would be $35 bucks an hour right? Are dealers payed minimum wage or even less cause of the tips?

My estimates might not be off somehow so I figured maybe you guys would know more.

That is California math, but not Nevada math. Nevada math is:

40 hands/hour (tighter games, more hands). Out of those you get about 10 hands with no flop and so minimal toke. The 30 other hands, 5 are won by the stiffers who a 50 cent toke is call for a celebration, 10 are won by decent tokers but small pots so 50 cents to a dollar, and then the remaining 20 you average a little under a buck. You usually are on three downs, then break. Most days the shift averages about 6-7 hours, depends on the time of day you work. I would guess the average deal works about 25-30 hours a week. Minimum wage is the salary everywhere. The tokes are probably about $12-15/hour. So about lets say $18/hour for 30 hours if you are lucky, about $540 week or a little over 25k a year if you take 2 weeks off. If you really hustle and get out more hands, become popular so you can up your tips, and take on a lot of extra shifts you might get to 40k a year, but that is about as good as it gets.

I know all this because an ex of mine was a dealer at the Bellagio and complained about everything after almost all shifts.

oh ok thanks for the useful info bill.

I had heard somewhere of 60k/year and I thought that seemed way too high as well.

Dealing with the customers at times got to be a big pain in the *ss. Same old questions time and time again. When of the great advantages of being a supervisor is having power of the pen and being able to write comps for your buddies.

What are the good paying jobs then?

What does an average craps or Blackjack dealer or Roulette guy make at a strip hotel?

Bartender in the Hard Rock Center Bar.

-------------------------------------------

I agree with Fish, 60-80 sounds about right for ticket writer jobs. (NOT COUNTING LEROY'S) Does take some time to work your way up the ladder, but if you like sports and are a young man, it can be a great time.

-------------------------------------------

Bartending jobs are hard to come by. I've known guys who've been in the same spot for 20 years. You can make great money and like Fish said if you don't know anybody, expect to be a bar back for many many months.

I worked as a Poker Prop in a So Cal Indian Casino. The tokes were UNBELIEVABLE compared to Vegas. It's more of a "family" atmosphere and the kids were pulling down at least an easy 60K.

Poker dealing is a crappy job in LV. No consistency of schedule for most nor job security for that matter. Rooms open and
close all the time so you never know how
long before you need to start looking for another room to work. The smoke is awful
and players can be abusive. Dealing in a
casino is probably one of the most overrated
and overglorified jobs that there is. It's
boring for the most part as well. The good
jobs like Mandalay, Bellagio etc will not
be obtainable for a break-in for many years.
More likely you'll end up downtown or a
lower level locals casino.
Best dealing job right now is at Hard Rock
and Mandalay. Both net just under $200 a
shift in tokes. The other end of the scale
is the $25 - $40 range per day in NLV and
some downtown joints.

Let us not forget these are jobs that require little in the way of skills, you can learn just about everything on the job. Dealing school is a 2 month and under $1000 investment for most, compare that to a 4-year degree. Dealers mostly do it because they love the atmosphere, not because it is necessarily good work. Top dealers make maybe 60k for the right shifts at the right places. Locals places and the best carpet joints are where the money seems to be. I have never been a dealer myself, but I have kept the numbers at some places and know a handful myself. I can tell you that most are just like the waitresses you find in any city. They spend every dime they got, they smoke like chimneys, they gamble a lot, and their income comes and goes all the time. It is a lifestyle more than a job. Half the people end up marrying someone they met doing the same job. If you are outside looking in, don't expect it to be anything like you think it is.

Best job is definitely parking valet, those guys make a ton of money, but at least they work for it. Head bellhop makes good dough as well. Pit bosses don't really make all that much as people think. The biggest money guys are the hosts, most of them ring up six figure checks, but they earn it. Most important thing to understand though is if you want to make a good wage in Vegas, best to work for something other than a casino. I got a fat bump in pay just working for someone else. Casinos expect you to dress impeccably, work a lot of OT, travel at times and in ways that screw up half your life...and they pay you bottom of scale wages.
