Eagles Want Vick Back Next Year, But No Contract Talks Yet

The Philadelphia Eagles seem to want Michael Vick back next year, but have not yet begun contract talks with the star quarterback according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report. Vick is in the final year of a two-year contract and is currently leading the
NFL with a 105.3 passer rating. Despite Vick’s stellar play, there are several obstacles to him staying in Philly.
First and foremost is the labor uncertainty the NFL is facing this season, with the current collective bargaining agreement expiring and talk of a lockout. That may prevent the Eagles from applying a franchise player tag to Vick. Additionally, the Eagles already gave an $11 milllion signing bonus to quarterback Kevin Kolb, who Vick replaced in this season’s first game. Vick’s durability is a concern as he missed three of the team’s first eight games with a rib injury suffered in a loss to the Washington Redskins.
Vick also seems to prefer returning to the Eagles, saying he appreciates the team taking a risk on signing him after his unjust incarceration. “”When nobody else wanted me, they did,” said Vick. “I definitely have to take that into consideration when it’s time to make a decision on something.” But the star quarterback is at least saying he’s only worrying about this season. “I’m enjoying being here with this season. I enjoy being with [Eagles head coach] Andy [Reid]. I’m just having fun right now. …
Whatever happens happens.“
Vick was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for guiding the Eagles to a 26-24 win over the Colts last Sunday. In the game, Vick completed 17 of 29 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown, and ran 10 times for 74 yards and another touchdown.
Vick will try to avenge his only loss as a starter this year on Monday night when the Eagles go to Washington. Vick is good friends with Redskins defensive back DeAngelo Hall, and Hall says he’s thrilled that Vick is again playing so well:
I’ll tell ya, man, I’m definitely shocked at what he’s doing. Definitely shocked. After watching him that first season out [of prison], I was like, ‘Man, I don’t know if he’ll ever be the same guy.’ Then watching him this year, it’s just like … you’re amazed.
It’s like, ‘Damn. This dude might be better than ever.’ I’m just happy for him. I know a lot of people thought he’d never be able to do this. A lot of people thought he was finished. But he’s not finished. That’s for sure.
