Street Facts from Las Vegas by Richard Reed
Besides discounts/deals listed below, we have added the
following section keeping you current with all the interesting
and noteworthy items happening around Las Vegas.
* Believe it or not, the Las Vegas Monorail reopened
Friday, December 24. To celebrate this reopening all
passengers until December 28 will ride for free. The
Monorail has been closed since September 9, 2004.
After the 28, the times and prices are 8 am to 2 am
daily, except on New Year's Eve, when it will run
until 3 am. A single ride is $3. A one-day pass is $10.
The Monorail is expected to relieve the city of some
New Years Eve congestion, we hope it continues to
operate.
* Harry Connick, Jr to perform at the Grand Events
Center at Green Valley Ranch Casino on February
19-20, 2005. Ticket costs are $44 to $104 plus tax.
* Approximately 200 Nevadan civilian-soldiers are
spending this Christmas in Iraq this year, our thoughts
and prayers go out to them and all the other US
personnel guarding us around the world.
* You can now travel faster in Vegas, On December
23, the three-mile section of Highway 215 between
Decatur Blvd and Buffalo is now stoplight-free.
Within the next two years the Highway Department
expects to have the entire Summerlin to Henderson
215 up to full interstate standards without any stops.
Not a second too soon, it is going to be under near
capacity use the moment it opens. Nevada never
over builds freeways, take a look at the I-15 any day
at rush hour. Maybe they should read the next
paragraph and learn from history.
* Interesting facts from the Census Bureau released
this past week. Census Bureau expects Nevada's
growth to slow down by 25%, and that will still make
Nevada the fastest growing state. Nevada has led
the nation in state growth for the past eighteen
consecutive years. Latest figures show between
July 2003 and July 2004 an amazing 92,564 people
moved to Nevada. That equates to about 7,013 people
per month, or 10 new residents per every hour.
* In January 2003 the Air Force assigned eight
F/A-22 Raptor's, the next generation fighter jet to
53rd Wing's 433 Test and Evaluation Squadron at
Nellis Air Force Base. Unfortunately one of those
next generation fighter jets crashed this week during
takeoff at Nellis. The pilot ejected safely moments
before the crash. This is the first F/A-22 Raptor crash
ever. The cost of a Raptor is a whopping $250 million
each.
* Smoking is to continue in Nevada for at least
another two years. This week the Secretary of
State ruled that two petitions limiting smoking in
public places and one petition to legalize marijuana
failed to secure enough signatures. This is not the
end of these types of petitions and the war will
continue in the court rooms for many years to come.
* This New Year's celebration is expected to be
attended by record-breaking crowds. Good weather
is expected to help lure thousands of visitors over
the holiday weekend.
* Station Casinos announced on December 21 they
will help celebrate the 2005 Las Vegas Centennial
by introducing a limited edition Boarding Pass and
Fiesta Amigo Club card bearing the centennial logo.
* Rumor has it that House of Blues OBA Lounge
will not be reopening. No one is commenting, but
after the altercation that took place a week ago,
Mandalay Bay management is not inclined to
tolerate any problems on their property. This
could be the second House of Blues major problem
and closing of an event, Juice on Sunday nights
was also canceled recently due to altercations
that occurred. We commend Mandalay Bay's
management in trying to keep a safe environment
for people to have fun in Las Vegas.
