Can someone please explain this to me. I was speaking to a mail carrier last weekend and she told me she makes about 70k per year delivering mail. (plus good benefits I am assuming) Why? Why? Why? Most jobs are harder than they appear to be, so perhaps there is something I am missing? What do they do besides pick up boxes of mail and bring them to the written address on the front? Serious question. (most of my life I have never really had a problem with the mail, but that has all changed where I love now. I kid you not, almost daily I get other people's mail too and have to bring it to them in)

How much do the order takers in the post office make? As far as I know you approach the counter, tell them what you need, then they ask if there is anything potentially hazardous, perishable etc and then you complete the transaction. Seems on par with asking if you want fries w/ your burger!!! What am I missing here?

Trump has brought up the USPS of course and even recall yrs ago they were talking about going to 5 days a week delivery, but I have never heard anyone complain about the wages/benefits!!!!

pretty sure she was counting all the OT she probably was working..Alot of regulars work a lot of OT because PO doesn't want to hire and full time regular employees anymore

First of all like Red Eye said, they won't hire anymore Full time people. Because some of these guys carriers and Post Office make a lot more than $70K
for the past 5-6 years the US Postal service has offered Buy Outs, because most of these Long time employees have been there for a very long time
and like I said, a ton of money, including 1000's of hours of sick time.

Why do you think the US Postal service loses $600-$800 MILLION a Year ??? No it's not because of Amazon .... They have been losing Money since Forever...

Worked there for over 30 years...there are a lot of reasons why she is making that much. I think two of the biggest reasons are automation and Amazon. When I started out, all the mail was hand sorted for delivery. Usually you sorted mail for 4 hours, then delivered for 4. Then in the mid 90s, they came up with machines that sorted the mail automatically. Which means when you go in, you just sort for about an hour, then deliver for about 7. There is a union, and when they made that change, it went to arbitration and the carriers got a nice bump in pay. Then the clerk craft followed suit. And recently the retention for new hires was poor because being out on the street for 7+ hours is pretty hard. Particularly when you are just starting out, you are forced to do it 6, even 7 days a week since Amazon wants Sunday delivery. A lot of people say f**k this after a few months, so it seems like offices are always shorthanded. Where I work, they were pretty much hiring anyone with a pulse, but I think the retention rate was something like 20%, believe it or not. And Amazon is a big game changer. Right now, on a typical day, a carrier probably has almost as many Amazon packages than first-class letters. When I first started, if you had like 10 packages a day, that was a lot. Now you have about 100-125 just about every day. Some of these are big and heavy af. So yeah, there is an opportunity for lots of OT because it seems like new hires just don't like it. I'm talking mostly about the carrier craft. I don't think clerks make as much money with OT.

Average pay for a carrier or a clerk isn't anywhere close to 70K.. Overtime is the only reason why anyone would make 70K at the PO. Was having lunch with a good friend from PO. He's on the OT list. He said he made over 30K in OT last year driving his salary up to those levels.

My aunt was a store manager at Wendy's..quit and went to USPS. Floated her all over the place and stuff and she eventually said f this and went back to managing at Wendy's. Old timers I think.are riding the gravy train but don't think its the case for new hires. USPS is in the same quagmire as gm, ford and other companies that are taking care of folks and folks families till they are dead. Nothing to do with the actual business of mail

I have no idea about a postal employee.... But about 8 years ago dated a woman that worked for Catholic Charities. Her salary was 100K per year... I'll never give a penny ever again.

She just blessed the money....I have no real idea. I think it was something similiar... 8 years ago 100K = what today? It was only a part time job for her!

have had a few friends leave as casino dealers to go work at the post office, similar starting salaries around mid 40's. the problem they ran into was all the overtime, the money was good and they were making much more than they were dealing thanks to the ot, but they were never seeing their family/kids due to the hours, so they came back. another one stating the job became just kind of grueling because he was carrying mail each day and logging 5-10 miles a day in walking and delivering mail.

I think it's hard to compare postal jobs.... I was in a government job in many differnt areas of the US..... Actually no 2 of them were the same as load of work and overtime etc... The base salary was the same.

I worked there for like 6 years as a graveyard shift mailhandler, foreman... because nobody senior, would bid that level 5 job much better to be a 4
