(IsraelNN.com) The average Arab in the Middle East reads approximately four pages worth of literature a year, according to a RIA Novosti Russian news service report published in November.
The Syrian newspaper Tishreen, commenting on a recent survey conducted by the United Nations, said that according to the study, Americans read an average of 11 books a year, with the average Briton reading eight books.

The Arab Thought Foundation, which reports on cultural development in Arab countries, concluded that only a little more than 8 percent of Arabs aspire to a higher education.
The U.N. survey reported that every year, one new book title is published per 12,000 people in the Arab world, as compared with one per 500 people in Britain. Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) says Israel publishes more than 4,000 books a year, making Israel the second highest per-capita publisher in the world, after the People's Republic of China.
The United Nations Development Programme Literacy Report for 2007-2008 listed Israel in 56th place for world literacy, with the Palestinian Authority coming in 80th, Jordan 84th, Lebanon 97th, Iran 114th, Syria 120th, and Egypt in 132nd place.

The misconception is that the degree to which one reads somehow demonstrates their overall intellect. In this region of the world, oral tradition has been placed above reading and writing for thousands of years.

For example, most historians agree that the historical Jesus probably didn't know how to read, but the average 1st century Jew could recite stories and passages that would fill up hundreds of pages.

Festering Zit, in one thread you're defending Christianity, and in the next you're insulting the Arab culture from which Jesus once lived. Reprehensible.

it's a stat that's been out there a while. Actually 1/4 americans read no books each year but the other 3/4 read more than 12 novels...unfortunately too many are the next trashy love fantasy that too many on this forum wait for each week like "obama, my obama"

You put yourself in a very difficult position, as a Christian, if you're going to post an article that insults Arab culture in this way, and then support a religion that arose from this culture 2,000 years ago. The first thing the skeptic is going to say to you is "So you admit that these people are primative knuckle-draggers, yet you accept a belief system that came from their culture, based on their mythology."

If truth and logic are not rooted in the culture of these people, then how can we trust the Gospels of Mark and Luke, neither of which were written by eyewitnesses of the events -- but based on the oral traditions of eyewitnesses?

Again, the idea that this article subtly puts forth is not good for our faith, and puts us in a very difficult philosophical position when trying to defend the historical accuracy of Christianity.

By the way, that little animation that you sandwiched in your pseudo-journalistic article could very well be symbolic of Jesus or one of the disciples. That's how they dressed 2,000 years ago.

So you're saying that being illiterate in the 21st century is a GOOD thing?? It explains a great deal about Arab misconceptions about Christianity, Israel, and the west. Of course, many of the educated ones who have political agendas and motives also espouse these views, and in fact inculcate the ignorant masses with them. BTW - there is absolutely no evidence that Jesus was illiterate. His knowledge and understanding of the Old Testament would seem to contradict that assertion.
