The UFC returns home to Las Vegas Nevada for UFC 116. The main event is the biggest heavyweight title fight in years, at UFC 116 current UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will defend his title against the interim champion, the undefeated Shane Carwin.
Other fights on the main card are Chris Leben fighting on just two weeks rest as he takes on Yoshihiro Akiyama. Krzysztof Soszynski and Stephan Bonnar battle in a light-heavyweight rematch after the first fight ended in controversy. Australian George Sotiropoulos takes his five-fight win streak against Kurt Pellegrino in a lightweight fight. Chris Lytle and Matt Browns welterweight fight rounds out the main card.
Main Fight Card
Brock Lesnar -145
Round Total 1½ O-135
Shane Carwin +115
Heavyweight Championship 5 rounds - MGM Grand Garden Arena - Las Vegas, Nevada.
This is easily the most important heavyweight fight since the peak of PrideFC in Japan. Brock Lesnar is the most athletic and heavyweight ever to enter the UFC. Lesnar, who has next to no football experience was the last player cut from the Minnesota Vikings in 2004. He’s only had five MMA fights but we’ve seen a doubling of his skills every fight.
I’m trying to avoid hyperbole but Lesnar is facing his toughest opponent ever when he steps in the cage against Shane Carwin. Carwin can match Lesnar’s size and holds a distinct advantage when it comes to striking power. As we’ve seen in his fights against Gonzaga and Mir, if Carwin touches your chin, your lights are going out. He’s 12-0 and he’s finished all of his fights in the first round.
There are questions about Lesnar’s chin, people are saying it’s untested and that’s true but there is a reason it’s untested. Lesnar has been so dominant in his fights that he hasn’t had worry about coming back after being tapped with a big fist. That’s going to be the difference Saturday night at UFC 116; we are going to see Lesnar bull his way through Carwin, similar to how he beat Keith Herring. Lesnar will avoid Carwin’s dirty boxing and grind out a win on the mat. The odds makers have this fight ending half way through the second round but I wouldn’t be surprised if Lesnar drags Carwin to the third before the older Carwin gasses out and is finished.
Yoshihiro Akiyama -210
Round Total 2½ U-145
Chris Leben +165
Middleweight 3 rounds - MGM Grand Garden Arena - Las Vegas, Nevada.
Chris Leben is a fighter and a bit of a throwback to the UFC of old. He’s not surprising....
