US might have been involved in 2002 Chavez coup: Carter

The United States knew about an abortive coup against Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in 2002, and may even have taken part, former US president Jimmy Carter has told a Colombian newspaper.
"I think there is no doubt that in 2002, the United States had at the very least full knowledge about the coup, and could even have been directly involved," Carter said in an interview with El Tiempo published Sunday.
The former US leader said it is understandable that Chavez continues to blame the United States for the failed overthrow attempt.
The Venezuelan president, considered a bulwark of leftism in Latin America, was overthrown by a civilian-military junta for about 48 hours in April 2002, before returning to power.
Then-president George W. Bush denied any US involvement in the abortive coup and called on Chavez, a fierce US critic, to "learn a lesson" from the attempted overthrow.
Carter told El Tiempo that he believed Chavez was elected in a "fair" vote in 1999, had carried out necessary reforms for Venezuela and ensured that "those who are traditionally excluded are able to get a larger share of the national wealth."
But he also said he was worried by the Venezuelan leader's drift towards "authoritarianism."
He added that he felt Chavez's popularity at home and his influence abroad had been "diminished."
Carter said US President Barack Obama had told him he would eventually like to have normal relations with Venezuela.
"But he (Chavez) has made this almost impossible," Carter said, adding that "international relations would be better if he would stop his attacks and insults against the United States."

I guess 2009 is the year Jimmy circled for his big comeback. Folks my age, and older, know how incompetent and moronic he is so we didn't need anymore convincing. Luckily, though, the younger generation can experience this for themselves.

The idiot only knows what he reads in the Osh Gosh Peach Gazette, fucking loser.

WASHINGTON -- During his first eight months in office, President Obama has sat down for three times as many television interviews as his most recent two predecessors combined.

And with yesterday's run of the Sunday-morning news show circuit and tonight's airing of "Late Night with David Letterman," Obama continues to blaze through the media hotter than any political figure in modern history.

"He's turning the presidency into an infomercial," warned former White House speechwriter Matt Latimer. "It's not just damaging to the White House. It will also ultimately hurt President Obama's image as a fresh, non-Washington leader.

The media blitz has won Obama unprecedented wall-to-wall coverage in the mainstream media.

In the New York Times alone, according to the Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University, 405 stories on the Obama administration have appeared on the front page through mid-August of this year totaling 119,678 column inches. That's 9,973 column feet of Obama coverage on the Times front page alone.

But it is television that has been the most powerful draw for Obama.

In his five major appearances yesterday, Obama voiced skepticism about adding troops to Afghanistan, denied making a deal with Russia over missile defenses in Europe, and continued to push his government-run health-insurance program.

As of mid-August, Obama submitted to a total of 66 television interviews, dramatically outstripping his two predecessors, according to Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project at Towson University in Maryland.

During the same period of their own presidencies, President George W. Bush gave 16 television interviews and President Bill Clinton gave just six.

Obama is also out-hustling his predecessors with the print media, giving 36 interviews with newspapers and magazines during his first seven months in office -- nearly doubling the numbers given by Bush and Clinton

Jimmy Carter is 85...time for him to step away from the microphone and just stick around until Al Roker Calls his name out during the weather.

As someone who has longed admired President Carter for his many contributions to our nation, I might have to agree with the above post.

Carter these days is more often resembling Ronald Reagan in about 1986-7. Time to sit down and enjoy the rocking chair on back porch.

"As hard as it is to believe, Jimmy Carter is an even worse ex-President than he was a President." George F. Will

I speak for a majority of my fellow Georgians in considering him an embarrassment to our state and our nation.

Who cares? Any attempt to prevent Castro wannabes like Chavez from getting to power should be applauded, not condemned. Unless of course, you're an apologist for anything and anyone who hates America, like Jimmy Carter.

This is the crux of your argument

On Wednesday October 18 on SBS Television, DATELINE reveals top secret American intelligence documents which show that the United States had detailed advance knowledge of the 2002 coup that overthrew the outspoken Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez.
One Central Intelligence Agency document dated Saturday April 6, 2002, five days prior to the coup, details who is involved in coup plotting and how they may intend to carry out their plan, including….
"To provoke military actions, the plotters may try to exploit unrest stemming from opposition demonstrations slated for later this month or ongoing strikes at the state owned oil company PDVSA."
The documents were obtained under U.S. Freedom of Information provisions after a painstaking three year investigation by American lawyer Eva Golinger.
Golinger tells DATELINE video journalist Aaron Lewis that "I've been doing this investigation since 2003 about U.S involvement in destablising the Venezuelan Government."

-------------------------------------------------------------

so the CIA knew people were plotting to overthrow Chavez. Seriously, that's it? Guess what, people are plotting to overthrow Chavez and every other dictator in the world still now.

The source of this conspiracy? documents released by the government. Holy chit man

The dude quoted in the article has been investigating this thing since 2003, and this is what he brings to the table.

What about direct involvement? planning? training? money? weapons? Where is the substantive evidence? Doesn't Chavez have something concrete by now?

Three of the five articles, I actually read them all, cite the released CIA memo referred to above. One tries to make a monetary connection, here it is:

Reports that the United States channelled hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to American and Venezuelan groups opposed to President Hugo Chavez, is likely to cause the Bush administration even further headaches.
Although White House officials have vigorously denied any suggestion that they gave a green light to the forces involved in the attempted coup, mounting evidence supports the theory that there was a tacit collusion.
Over the past year, the National Endowment for Democracy, a non-profit organisation that is funded by Congress, quadrupled its budget for Venezuela to more than $877,000.
It has just been revealed that the organisation directed funds to the labour group whose protests led to the coup attempt.

-----------------------------------------------------------

An organization openly funded by Congress, as in public records, increased it's budget to Venezuela to $ 877,000.

Yes, $ 877,000, as in hundreds of thousands of dollars. That outta buy a few billboards or something, eh? WTF ?

Where is the outrage against Bush from the Democrats on this one? even they see 'bullshit"

Why is there no significant coverage by any significant news organization? do you think the NYT & MSNBC were protecting Bush?

No evidence, no political outcry, no attacking media = no story

They shot demonstrators from buildings and blamed it on Chavez. Knowing something about what would happen doesn't even scratch the surface. None of this means I like Chavez. And why would the lapdog media attack? Outrage from Democrats? I don't think so...stop buying into the false left-right dichotomy the Democrats and Republicans are playing.
