Going into the final weekend of play in the regular season, the Texas Longhorns were pretty close to being a lock for a BCS Bowl bid as they were ranked 10th. However, a wacky state of events in that final week sent the Longhorns from a possible Rose Bowl bid to a trip to the Holiday Bowl. This is quite a let down for the Bonghorns and I think it will show itself here. Texas had fun beating up on all of the also rans of the Big-12 down the stretch. I am not sold on the strength of the Big-12 this year and Texas benefitted from the softness of the conference. I did notice that they had big problems with the Texas Tech passing attack and Washington St. can attack them in the same way that the Red Raiders did. I don't know that Texas is ready for a real competitive game and when they get into it, I am not sure they will react appropriately. I see a let down here from Texas.
Many people would be surprised to know that Washington St. actually has a pretty decent defense. The Cougars give up less points and less yards per game than Texas. Washington St. also only allows 87 yards rushing per game and 2.6 yards per carry. They can come up with a scheme that limits the running of Cedric Benson and the scrambling of Texas' talented quarterback. I see Washington St. making Texas beat them with the pass and I don't see that happening. Offensively, the Cougars have good balance and can certainly keep themselves in a game, if need be, with their passing attack. At 9-3, you can expect the Cougars to be plenty offended by the fact that they are a near double digit underdog in this game. They will come out fired up and will want to make a name for themselves against a Texas team that won't be as intense as they should be.
