KEY STAT: Czech Republic have won four of their last six at home

EXPERT VERDICT: Czech coach Pavel Vrba will be concentrating on preparing for France and is unlikely to do too much tinkering ahead of a major tournament. The Czechs beat both Holland and Iceland at home during qualifying and thrashed a decent Serbia side 4-1 in a November friendly. They can overcome a Scotland side lacking experience.

KEY STAT: Northern Ireland are unbeaten in eight matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Wales aren’t entirely a one-man team but they are far, far weaker when Gareth Bale isn’t around – and he’s not their only world-class star missing in Cardiff. Chris Coleman’s men must also do without Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey and Northern Ireland can grab a draw.

KEY STAT: Swindon’s Nicky Ajose is League One top scorer with 20 goals

EXPERT VERDICT: Title contenders Wigan are on a 16-game unbeaten run in the league and beat Swindon 1-0 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. However, the Robins have proved hard to beat with their last defeat coming eight games ago against playoff chasers Port Vale and they can at least trouble the Latics.

RECOMMENDATION: Wigan to win 2-1

KEY STAT: Coventry have won four of the past five meetings

EXPERT VERDICT: Both sides are in poor form with Coventry claiming three points in only one of their past six games. Top scorer Adam Armstrong is out of form having not scored in his last six. Howeverm, Peterborough’s 2-1 win last Saturday was their first in their last eight games – during that run they’ve let in 19 goals.

KEY STAT: Ireland were unbeaten at home in Euro 2016 qualifying

EXPERT VERDICT: Ireland were impressive in home matches during Euro 2016 qualifying and they may represent the best value in this friendly. The Irish won three of their five Group D home games, claiming a 1-0 victory over Germany and securing qualification with a 2-0 win against Bosnia in Dublin. Switzerland lost home and away to England.

KEY STAT: Burton have won seven of their last ten home games

EXPERT VERDICT: Burton’s charge to the Championship should continue with three more points against Oldham. The relegation-threatened Latics are better away from Boundary Park than at home, but they look no match for the table-topping Brewers. Burton won 4-0 at Port Vale last week and can get the Pirelli-faithful purring.

NHL notebook: Red Wings sign LW Tangradi to two-year deal
By The Sports Xchange

The Detroit Red Wings signed left winger Eric Tangradi to a two-year contract extension Monday.
Tangradi, 27, is now locked up through 2017-18 season.
Tangradi has skated in 60 games with the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins, producing a career-best 49 points (24 goals, 25 assists), along with 64 penalty minutes. He ranks second on the Griffins in goals and points.
Tangradi, a seventh-year pro, has appeared in one game for the Red Wings this season, logging one hit in 6:55 time on ice.

--The Red Wings also assigned goaltender Jared Coreau to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.
Coreau, 24, was recalled on March 16. He did not see any action in two games since making the trip to Detroit.
The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder has been one of the top goalies in the AHL this season, ranking among league leaders. The Perth, Ontario, native spent three seasons at Northern Michigan University prior to signing with the Red Wings after the 2012-13 season.

--The Arizona Coyotes assigned defenseman Philip Samuelsson to the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League.
Samuelsson, 24, played 16 minutes on Sunday night against the San Jose Sharks during his emergency call-up with the Coyotes. He has now played in four games with the team this season.
In 53 games with Springfield, Samuelsson has recorded 30 points (four goals, 26 assists). He was drafted out of Boston College by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round (61st overall) of the 2009 NHL draft.

Preview: Flyers (35-24) at Blue Jackets (29-35)

Date: March 22, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Flyers have had few letdowns while compiling one of the NHL's best records over the past month.

Fresh off a pivotal win over a division rival, they'll need to avoid a slip up when they continue their late-season playoff push Tuesday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Twelfth in the Eastern Conference on Feb. 24, Philadelphia (35-24-12) has gone 9-2-1 since to close within a point of eighth-place Detroit with a game in hand. The Flyers are now just three back of the New York Islanders for the first wild card after Monday's 4-1 win in Brooklyn that opened a critical four-game trip.

Balanced scoring and solid goaltending have been constants during Philadelphia's surge, and the trend continued Monday. Four different players had goals and Steve Mason recorded 23 saves to improve to 5-1-1 with a 1.98 goals-against average in seven March starts.

"The guys are playing hard and they're playing together," coach Dave Hakstol told the NHL's official website. "We've known all along that we've got a tough battle to get above the line in the playoff race. The guys are having fun and they're working hard right now. There's a goal in mind, but I think every day it's more critical to focus on the task at hand, to show up, to play hard, and have fun while you're doing it."

Philadelphia is averaging 3.42 goals per game during its 12-game run, with eight players scoring three or more over that span.

The Flyers' next challenge will be maintaining their focus against a Columbus team it routed 6-0 in Philadelphia on March 5 but hasn't beaten on the road since Dec. 13. 2005. The Blue Jackets have won seven straight meetings at Nationwide Arena, pulling out a 3-2 shootout victory on Dec. 19.

"We have to move on to (Tuesday) and bring the same effort," center Nick Cousins said.

While Philadelphia's offense has been consistently productive for much of its rise, Columbus (29-35-8) has been feast or famine in that department throughout the season's second half. The Blue Jackets have scored four or more goals in each of their last eight wins and two or less in all of their past 13 losses.

After mustering three goals during a three-game skid from March 11-17, the Jackets broke out in Saturday's 6-3 home victory over New Jersey before struggling again in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Devils.

"Neither team gave the other too much," said coach John Tortorella. "I don't think we played badly. We just couldn't score."

Slumps by some of its top forwards have contributed to Columbus' erratic performances. While Cam Atkinson has six goals over a nine-game stretch, Brandon Saad has none over his last six, ex-Flyer Scott Hartnell zero over his past seven and Brandon Dubinsky none over a 10-game span.

Columbus managed only 19 shots in the March 5 loss as Mason posted his fourth shutout of the season. The former Blue Jacket has a 1.95 GAA while starting all three prior matchups this season, though he could give way for Anthony Stolarz's NHL debut with the Flyers playing on consecutive nights.

Stolarz, 19-15-3 with a 2.59 GAA in 42 games for Lehigh Valley of the AHL, was recalled Sunday with Michal Neuvirth out for the regular season with a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Columbus' Sergei Bobrovsky had 27 saves on Saturday to earn his first win since a 27-save effort in a 4-1 victory at Philadelphia on Dec. 5. The former Flyer allowed 10 goals in losing his first three starts since returning from a groin injury earlier this month.

Preview: Sabres (29-34) at Hurricanes (31-27)

Date: March 22, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Though the Carolina Hurricanes have earned at least a point in all but one of their eight games this month, they've won only three times and remain a long shot to make the playoffs.

Following another missed opportunity, the Hurricanes try to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat and season sweep by the visiting Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night.

Carolina (31-27-14) has gone past regulation six times in going 3-1-4 and playing all but one game on the road this month. The Hurricanes opened their recent five-game trip with a 3-2 overtime win over Boston on March 10, then lost the next four while going to OT two more times and then a shootout against Minnesota on Saturday.

'We've got to make one more play,' coach Bill Peters said after the 3-2 loss to the Wild. "It's that tight around the league no matter who you play and where you play. Everyone is competing very hard, and everyone is desperate for points."

The Hurricanes are seven points out of the final wild-card spot and need to pass three teams to capture it. Entering Monday, Carolina leads the league in losses after regulation.

"This time of year, it's getting to playoff-type hockey," center Jordan Staal said. "Guys don't want to give up anything crazy and teams make you work for your goals.

"It's also just kind of the way we play. We've been playing solid defensively, making sure no one gets in behind us and making them work for goals. It becomes a tight match sometimes."

Carolina has managed seven goals during the 0-1-3 skid and is 0 for 9 on the power play in three games since going 1 for 3 in a 3-2 overtime loss at Buffalo (29-34-10) on March 12. The Hurricanes, who dropped five straight Nov. 10-20, were last swept in a season series by the Sabres in 2006-07.

Rookie Jack Eichel has scored three of his team-leading 22 goals against Carolina, highlighted by the OT tally earlier this month.

Buffalo sandwiched two wins around an overtime loss before putting forth a lackadaisical effort in Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Toronto. After Brian Gionta opened the scoring early in the first period, the Sabres seemed to sag while totaling 21 shots and allowing three third-period goals.

"We've got to find a way to grind things out when we're not feeling our best," Gionta told the Sabres' official website. "We didn't look like a team that had much energy but you get out to an early lead, you've got to find ways to play under those circumstances."

Buffalo hasn't scored on the power play in five road games in which it's had a chance with the man advantage. It's 1 for 31 in the last 10 road contests.

Carolina has killed off all five Buffalo penalties this season, and 42 of 46 in its last 19 games overall.

Staal scored Saturday for the second time in three games.

Buffalo's Robin Lehner has dropped four straight starts, yielding three goals in each of the last three.

Preview: Capitals (51-15) at Senators (34-31)

Date: March 22, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The Washington Capitals are on the verge of clinching the Metropolitan Division title and the top seed in the Eastern Conference, but their latest effort proved they're hardly a polished product and still have some issues on the road.

Looking to bounce back from one of their worst defeats of 2015-16, the Capitals can avoid a fourth straight road loss by sweeping the season series from the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.

Washington (51-15-5) had a chance to nail down the division with a third straight victory Sunday, but instead yielded its highest goal total of the season in a 6-2 loss at Pittsburgh. Though the defeat was ugly and gave the Capitals their longest road slide of 2015-16, perhaps most concerning within the dressing room was the timing of the performance.

"You can talk all you want about how many points you've accumulated during the regular season, but once you get to the playoffs, that's all out the window," defenseman Brooks Orpik told the team's official website. "We better start playing a little bit better."

Washington allowed the first two goals before tying it in the second. However, Braden Holtby yielded five goals on 26 shots before he was pulled. He had given up one goal in two straight and three of his previous four starts.

Though the Capitals killed six of seven penalties against the Penguins, they've allowed 15 goals during the 0-2-1 road skid.

"We got exactly what we deserved," coach Barry Trotz said. "I'm not going to file it. I'm not going to let guys off the hook. There's no excuse for the sloppy play, the lack of execution when the heat was on."

In the midst of a 4-0-1 stretch against Ottawa (34-31-8), the Capitals appear to have a good opportunity to get back on track by sweeping this season series for the first time since 2007-08. Holtby and backup Philipp Grubauer have combined to stop 58 of 60 shots in two meetings this season.

Alex Ovechkin has two of his league-leading 42 goals in the last 11 games, but scored twice in a 7-1 home rout of the Senators on Jan. 10. Nicklas Backstrom and Jason Chimera each had three assists.

Ottawa has totaled eight goals in the last five against Washington, but has scored 13 times to win three of its past four games overall. Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Curtis Lazar and Alex Chiasson recorded short-handed goals in Saturday's 5-0 victory over Montreal.

The Senators rank 29th in the NHL in penalty killing at 75.4 percent, but lead the league with 15 short-handed goals. Pageau's six short-handed scores are also the most in the NHL.

"Any time you get one short-handed goal, you look at it as a bonus," coach Dave Cameron told the league's official website. "To get three is kind of the exception."

Seven points out of the final wild-card spot and needing to pass four teams to capture it, Ottawa has actually been better of late with the disadvantage by killing 17 of 18 penalties in six games.

"Regardless of where we are in the standings right now, I think we're a high-character group," said Andrew Hammond, who made 30 saves Saturday.

Hammond allowed all nine goals on 61 shots in the last two against Washington.

Preview: Red Wings (36-25) at Lightning (41-26)

Date: March 22, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

With Niklas Kronwall back and Dylan Larkin enjoying a historic rookie season, the Detroit Red Wings are feeling good about extending their run of consecutive playoff berths.

That might not happen, though, unless they can change their recent road fortunes against Tampa Bay.

The Red Wings look to win their third straight and end a five-game slide at Amalie Arena on Tuesday night when the Lightning continue a pursuit of their first division title in 12 years.

Detroit (36-25-11) looked like it might be falling out of the postseason chase after dropping nine of 14 in a stretch that ended with a 4-3 loss at Philadelphia on March 15. The club has since regrouped, winning its last two and moving ahead of the Flyers for the Eastern Conference's final wild-card spot with Saturday's 5-3 victory at Florida.

"We need to continue to build," goaltender Jimmy Howard said. "It's another step in the right direction.'

Kronwall provided a lift with two assists after he had missed the previous three games with a sprained right knee. The Red Wings are 11-4-1 in their last 16 games in which the defenseman has played.

"Well, first of all, he's an elite leader," coach Jeff Blashill told the team's official website. "Nik's a big part of our team, has been for a long time."

Pavel Datsyuk led the way Saturday with two goals, while Larkin added a goal and an assist. Larkin has team bests of 21 goals and 43 points, leaving him just shy of becoming the first Detroit rookie to finish with at least 44 since current teammate Henrik Zetterberg in 2002-03.

Larkin had an assist in a 3-1 home win over Tampa Bay on Oct. 13 and scored the late go-ahead goal in a 2-1 home victory over the Lightning on Nov. 3. Though they split four games at Amalie in last year's postseason meeting, Detroit couldn't snap its regular-season skid there in a 3-1 loss Feb. 3.

Another road defeat in this series could prove costly, as the Flyers have games in hand on the Red Wings as they push for the playoffs and attempt to end the Red Wings' drive for a 24th straight postseason appearance.

The Lightning (41-26-5) are looking to move another step closer to overtaking Florida atop the Atlantic Division. They haven't won a division title since celebrating the second of back-to-back crowns in 2003-04 - when they went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Tampa Bay, 1-4-1 in six before Saturday's 2-0 win at Arizona, opens a six-game homestand looking to avoid its first three-game slide at Amalie since Oct. 29-Nov. 10. Ben Bishop shined with 32 saves against the Coyotes, moving into first place on the team's all-time shutouts list.

Bishop is expected to get a chance to continue his bid for the Vezina Trophy after going 8-2-1 with a 1.55 goals-against average over his last 11 starts. He's posted a 1.69 GAA in winning eight of 12 career games against Detroit, though he broke a three-game losing streak in the series Feb. 3.

"He's absolutely one of the best goalies in the league, no doubt," defenseman Anton Stralman told the team's official website. "I think that's pretty obvious the last couple of years."

Nikita Kucherov has scored in his last two games overall and also has two goals over his past two against Detroit. Ondrej Palat is having a strong March with six goals in nine games.

Preview: Ducks (40-22) at Canadiens (33-34)

Date: March 22, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The Anaheim Ducks appear to be getting back on track after a brief slump, but their rough start to the season makes such stretches all the more damaging as they try to complete their resurgence and win the Pacific Division.

They'll try for their third straight victory and fourth in five games Tuesday night when they visit the Montreal Canadiens, whose fast start is an increasingly distant memory in a lost season.

Anaheim (40-22-9) has rebounded from an 0-2-1 skid that followed its 18-1-1 stretch, but even that short slide has left the Ducks struggling to keep pace with surging Los Angeles in the race for the Pacific title. Their 1-7-2 start has left little margin for error as the regular season winds down, and they're also trying to hold off San Jose, one point behind them, for the second spot.

"Expectations were high at the start of the season," defenseman Kevin Bieksa told the team's official website. "We wanted to be at the top of the division the whole year, and we weren't. We had to claw our way back. When you start losing a bunch of games, it starts to snowball. It feels like you're never going to get it back together, but we stayed positive. We didn't turn on each other."

Jakob Silfverberg scored in overtime in Sunday's 3-2 victory over Winnipeg to open a five-game trip that could go a long way toward deciding the division race. The effort hardly impressed coach Bruce Boudreau, though.

'We weren't very good,' he said. 'We gave up way too many chances. ... if we want to be successful in the last 11 games and beyond, we got to play better.'

Anaheim, which avoided a third straight road loss and is 13-3-2 in its last 18 away from home, killed off all three Jets power plays, making it seven straight games and 20 short-handed situations without allowing a goal - improving its league-best percentage to 87.3.

The Ducks defeated Montreal 3-2 in a shootout March 2, their third straight win in the series. They're 8-1-2 in the last 11 matchups.

Jamie McGinn scored in that game, his first with Anaheim after being acquired from Buffalo on Feb. 29. McGinn has five goals in 10 games with the Ducks, including one in each of the last three.

While Anaheim has scored 15 goals during its 3-1-0 stretch, the Canadiens have been outscored 19-6 in a 1-4-0 span, the latest rough patch in a bizarre season.

Since opening 19-4-3, Montreal (33-34-6) has averaged 2.09 goals, tied for the worst mark in the league. It will face an Anaheim club that's second in the NHL with 2.25 allowed per game.

The Canadiens dropped their second straight Sunday, 4-1 to Calgary for their third consecutive home loss. Montreal had surrendered 10 straight goals before rookie Michael McCarron's first career tally in the third period.

Rookie Mike Condon continued to struggle, making 31 saves to give him a 3.40 goals-against average in a 1-5-1 stretch. He ranks toward the bottom of the league with a .904 save percentage and has seemed clearly overwhelmed by having to replace injured star Carey Price, who's likely out for the season.

"This is the most that he's played in his career, even I'm talking about college hockey," coach Michel Therrien said. "We didn't plan this, obviously, at the beginning of the year, but that's a reality."

Condon stopped 33 shots against Anaheim earlier this month, while John Gibson picked up the win for the Ducks with 25 saves.

Gibson has gone 5-2-1 with a 1.91 GAA over his last nine starts. He has won both career starts against Montreal with a 1.44 mark.

Preview: Canucks (27-32) at Jets (29-37)

Date: March 22, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The effects of the Vancouver Canucks' rough season might finally be taking their toll on one of the Sedin brothers.

After questioning the work ethic of his teammates in their most recent contest, Daniel Sedin expects a more spirited performance Tuesday night as the visiting Canucks try to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat and season sweep by the lowly Winnipeg Jets.

Vancouver's skid began with a 5-2 home loss to Winnipeg (29-37-6) last Monday. The Canucks (27-32-12) lost 3-1 to Colorado two nights later and were shut out in their next two games.

After they were outshot 50-19 in Saturday's 3-0 loss to St. Louis, the usually mild-mannered Sedin couldn't hold back.

"The effort should always be there," said Sedin, who has combined with brother Henrik for two points in four games. "It doesn't matter where you are in the standings or what kind of team you are. That's not good enough.

"This is too tough a league to go out there and hope. You've got to work for your chances, you've got to work for your teammates. Once we realize that, we can be a good team. You need all (the guys)."

A loser of 12 of 17, the Western Conference's lowest-scoring team has averaged 2.1 goals in 22 games and is 0 for 23 on the power play in the last seven. The only time the Canucks were blanked in three straight games was Jan. 7-10, 1984.

Injuries and a poor record have Vancouver turning to youth in the final weeks of the season, but Daniel Sedin wouldn't allow that to be an excuse for the Canucks' level of play.

"If they don't have confidence it's because they don't work hard," he said. "That's the way I look at it. The effort has to be there every night. That's all we can ask for right now."

Vancouver, which lost five in a row Nov. 27-Dec. 5, totaled three goals in the first two games against the Jets. It fell 4-1 at Winnipeg on Nov. 18.

The Jets, however, have been outscored 11-3 in going 0-2-1 since winning at Vancouver last week. Winnipeg lost for the 15th time in 19 home games, 3-2 in overtime to Anaheim on Sunday.

"We owe it to the fans," coach Paul Maurice told the NHL's official website. "This is not where we want to be. We want to put in a good effort out there, we want to play right and make it an exciting game."

Points leader Blake Wheeler snapped a 10-game goal drought with his 19th but the Jets didn't convert any of their three power-play chances and are 1 for 28 in the last nine.

Wheeler has two goals and three assists during a five-game point streak against Vancouver.

The Sedins had four goals and 10 assists in a combined four-game point streak against Winnipeg before both were shut out in last week's meeting.

Michael Hutchinson made 26 saves in that matchup with the Canucks and 30 on Sunday.

Vancouver's Ryan Miller has posted a 3.30 goals-against average while losing all four career starts at Winnipeg.

Preview: Kings (44-23) at Wild (34-28)

Date: March 22, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

Consecutive razor-thin wins haven't lessened the Minnesota Wild's margin for error in their quest for a playoff return.

Needing to capitalize on a home-heavy upcoming stretch, the Wild's sense of urgency remains high entering Tuesday night's matchup with the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Kings.

Minnesota (34-28-11) stayed right on Colorado's heels in the race for the Western Conference's final wild-card spot with Sunday's 3-2 shootout win at struggling Chicago, one night after it topped Carolina in a shootout by the same score. One point behind the Avalanche, the Wild visit Denver on Saturday in their lone road test over the next five games.

'We've had back-to-back nights of it,' interim coach John Torchetti said of the consecutive shootout victories. 'It says we want it. Some people question us. Not me. I think we want it.'

Minnesota will play six of its nine remaining regular-season games at Xcel Energy Center, where it's managed just five goals in losing two of its last three. The Wild have just 10 over their last four overall and face a Kings team that's yielded the second-fewest in the NHL (163).

Los Angeles (44-23-5) is coming off a rare defensive clunker, however, opening a three-game trip with Monday's 5-2 defeat to Nashville. The Kings had outscored opponents 16-6 in winning their previous four and have allowed just 29 goals while going 11-3-1 since Feb. 20.

Jonathan Quick, 5-0-1 with a 1.63 goals-against average over his six prior outings, permitted three on 17 shots in the second period and was pulled in favor of Jhonas Enroth to begin the third.

"We just came out flat, we weren't ready to play, and obviously it showed early," said defenseman Drew Doughty, who scored the first of two third-period goals during a failed comeback effort.

Enroth could draw the start with the Kings, four points ahead of second-place Anaheim in the Pacific and one behind Dallas for the West lead, playing on consecutive nights. He sports a solid 2.03 GAA for the season but has struggled against the Wild, allowing 20 goals in losing four straight meetings, the most recent a 6-2 defeat in Saint Paul with Dallas on Feb. 22, 2015.

Minnesota will be counting on another sharp performance from Devan Dubnyk, who had 29 saves before thwarting all three shootout attempts against Chicago. He recorded 31 against Carolina the previous night to bounce back from Thursday's 7-4 loss at New Jersey, in which he stopped only 5-of-8 attempts before being removed late in the first period.

"You just want to play well," Dubnyk told the Wild's official website. "My job and my focus is to go out there and give these guys a good feeling, and a good chance to win every game."

Charlie Coyle, the Wild's leader with 21 goals, has gone nine straight without one but scored in both recent shootouts. Nino Niederreiter has four over a five-game point streak, however, and eight in his last 15 games.

Los Angeles' Anze Kopitar extended his point streak to six games with two assists in Monday's loss. The standout center scored the game-winner in a 2-1 overtime win over Minnesota at Staples Center on Oct. 16.

Coyle and Erik Haula, also on a five-game point streak, had goals to support Darcy Kuemper's 32 saves in the Wild's 3-0 victory at Los Angeles on Jan. 21.

Preview: Stars (43-21) at Blackhawks (42-24)

Date: March 22, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

The Chicago Blackhawks are running out of chances to catch the Dallas Stars in the Central Division, and the same goes for the Western Conference's top spot.

If they aren't careful, there will be plenty of opportunities to fall in the opposite direction.

The Blackhawks hope to remain within reach of the Stars, who will go for their fourth win in the season series Tuesday night at the United Center while continuing life without Tyler Seguin.

Chicago is mired in a 1-3-2 stretch, though it picked up points in Friday's 4-0 win at Winnipeg and Sunday's 3-2 shootout loss to Minnesota - its third straight defeat at home.

Still, the Blackhawks (42-24-7) are struggling while it seems the rest of the West contenders are making a move. Their 91 points trail Dallas (43-21-9) by four, but they also sit behind Los Angeles and St. Louis while Anaheim, San Jose and Nashville lurk close behind.

Backup Scott Darling has played well in net with Corey Crawford slow to return from an upper-body injury. Darling has a 1.64 goals-against average and .945 save percentage in three straight starts, which included his second career shutout against the Jets and a 32-save effort against the Wild.

"It's good for me to get a little momentum going," Darling said. "It's good going forward that I'll have this experience."

When asked if Crawford, who allowed nine goals in two starts before his injury, will return against Dallas, coach Joel Quenneville said, "We'll see."

Darling played in two games against Dallas this season, relieving an ineffective Crawford each time. While Crawford holds a 4.58 GAA and an .879 save percentage in four starts against the Stars, Darling allowed one goal on 25 shots in his appearances.

Not surprisingly, the Stars won three of four meetings, giving them victories in five of the last six overall.

Dallas is 5-1-2 following a 1-5-2 stretch. The NHL's top-scoring team, though, will be without Seguin for three to four weeks after surgery to repair a small cut of his left Achilles tendon. He hopes to be back for the start of the playoffs - which the Stars could clinch a spot into Tuesday.

Seguin's 33 goals rank second on the team to Jamie Benn's 36.

Seguin suffered the injury late in Thursday's 4-3 win over Tampa Bay, the same game former Chicago forward Patrick Sharp returned from a six-game absence because of a lower-body injury.

Equally concerning to the injury issues had been the defensive end of the ice after the Stars surrendered five goals in each of their previous two games - the sixth time they had allowed at least that many in 13 contests.

However, Kari Lehtonen has played well in net the last two, leading some to believe he has earned the postseason starting job over Antti Niemi.

Lehtonen improved to 21-9-2 by making 27 saves in Saturday's 3-0 win over the New York Islanders for his second shutout. He has started seven of the last eight games, winning five.

'I'm not establishing anybody as No. 1,' coach Lindy Ruff said. 'But I like the way (Lehtonen's) playing, and the reason he has been playing is because his game has been better than Antti's.'

Dallas will face a Chicago power play that ranks in the top five of the league with a 22.3 percentage but is in an 0-for-17 slump over the last five.

Preview: Oilers (29-39) at Coyotes (31-34)

Date: March 22, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

Though the playoffs appear to be a longshot, Mike Smith isn't willing to give up the fight.

The veteran goaltender has been solid since returning from an extended absence, but his effort won't matter unless the Arizona Coyotes can find a way to put the puck in the net.

With Smith expected to get a chance to extend his dominance in this series, the Coyotes will go after their 24th win in the past 29 meetings with the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.

Arizona (31-34-7) would need an unlikely turn of events to secure its first postseason berth since reaching the Western Conference finals in 2011-12. After going 9-18-3 in its last 30, the club has fallen 11 points back of the final wild-card spot with 10 games remaining.

The Coyotes received a nice bump when Smith returned for the first time since undergoing core muscle surgery in December. They won the last two of a three-game winning streak with Smith between the pipes before he got the night off in Saturday's 2-0 home loss to Tampa Bay.

Smith then had 33 saves Sunday when Arizona was blanked for the second straight game in a 3-0 loss at San Jose. The 10th-year pro has stopped 104 of 107 shots in his three games back.

"For the rest of the season I'll keep pushing forward," Smith told the team's official website. "We're definitely doing some good things but we've got to find ways to win these games."

The Coyotes will have to find a way to avoid getting shut out in three straight for the first time since March 2013 to get that done. It doesn't help that Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who has a team-high 49 points, is uncertain to play after missing six games with a shoulder injury.

Arizona, however, might not need much scoring as Smith looks to extend a 14-game streak (12-0-1) with at least one point earned against the Oilers that's tied for the league's second-longest active run for a goalie versus any opponent. He owns a 2.14 goals-against average over that span after finishing with 44 saves in a 4-0 win at Edmonton on March 12.

Arizona is 3-0-1 in the season series and 23-1-4 in 28 meetings since January 2010.

The Coyotes have totaled seven goals in two games against Cam Talbot this season. Edmonton's goalie, though, has posted a 1.66 GAA in winning seven of his past nine starts and has allowed three goals with a .978 save percentage over a four-game road winning streak.

Talbot is likely to get the nod after Laurent Brossoit had 22 saves in Sunday's 3-2 home loss to Colorado that snapped a two-game winning streak. Matt Hendricks and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored, while star rookie Connor McDavid had his fifth assist in four games.

Edmonton (29-39-7), which has won seven of 12, is trying to avoid finishing at the bottom of the conference with a one-point edge over Winnipeg.

'We may not be a playoff team, but we have playoff fans,' coach Todd McLellan said. 'At some point, we have to reward them.'

McLellan's club will have to contain Max Domi, who has four goals and two assists in the season series. Ekman-Larsson has four goals and seven points over his last six meetings.

Preview: Blues (42-22) at Sharks (41-25)

Date: March 22, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

Brian Elliott gave the St. Louis Blues a major boost with a shutout in his return.

He'll have a bigger challenge in his next outing since he likely has bad memories of facing the San Jose Sharks.

Elliott and the Blues seek to complete a five-game trip with a winning record Tuesday night when they meet a Sharks team in position to clinch a playoff berth.

The goaltender returned Saturday with 19 saves for his second shutout in a 3-0 victory over Vancouver. The effort came after St. Louis (42-22-9) conceded 13 goals over consecutive defeats.

'I think for our whole team, we needed to have a good game and get a good solid St. Louis Blues type of hockey game,' Elliott said. 'We didn't play well the last couple of outings and this is good. Hopefully we can take it into San Jose and wrap up the road trip with a high."

Elliott came back from a 10-game absence from a lower-body injury suffered when he faced the Sharks (41-25-6) in a 6-3 defeat Feb. 22. He was on a roll with a 1.99 goals-against average in winning five straight starts before he allowed three goals in the first 12:59 of that one.

He also yielded three goals on 32 shots in a 3-1 defeat to San Jose on Feb. 4.

Coach Ken Hitchcock, whose team improved to 2-2-0 on this trip, said Elliott will start Tuesday.

"It's his turn," Hitchcock told the Blues' official website. "Shutout, played well, we'll play him and then we'll gauge it on the weekend what we're going to do."

San Jose can stretch its season-high home win streak to five and clinch a Pacific Division playoff berth with a victory. The Sharks can also clinch if Arizona fails to win in regulation Tuesday against Edmonton.

They are one point behind Anaheim in the race for home-ice advantage in the first round while the Blues are two points behind Central Division leader Dallas.

The Sharks got two wins over the weekend to start this six-game homestand, 4-1 over the New York Rangers on Saturday and 3-0 over the Coyotes on Sunday behind backup James Reimer's 25 saves.

Coach Pete DeBoer figures to turn back to Martin Jones, who has allowed four goals on 55 shots in beating the Blues twice this season.

"We want to enjoy this one and get some rest but obviously St. Louis is a big test for us," DeBoer said.

Joe Thornton has six points in a five-game run, Joel Ward has scored three goals in the last two games and Brent Burns is second in the NHL among defensemen with a career-high 65 points.

"We feel real comfortable, I think," Thornton said. "We're confident with the lineup we have every night and whoever is out (there) has a chance to do something each night."

Thornton has a seven-game point streak against St. Louis. The Sharks have won the last six matchups he has taken part in, with the center amassing 14 points.

San Jose's Joe Pavelski has 34 goals to match St. Louis star Vladimir Tarasenko for fourth in the league. Tarasenko has eight points in his last six games, including his 100th career goal Saturday.

Grand Salami - March

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

NHL Hockey Odds and Picks: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews

We are witnessing something pretty unusual from an individual perspective in the NHL this season that you may not be aware of.

Take a look at the NHL points leaders. You have Ottawa's Erik Karlsson tied for fourth in the league with 73 points while leading with 60 assists. And you have San Jose's Brent Burns 10th in points with 65. He has 26 goals. What's so unusual about that? Both are defensemen.

The last time two defensemen finished in the Top 10 in points was in 1973-74 when Bruins legend Bobby Orr finished second in scoring and New York Rangers blueliner Brad Park finished tied for ninth. No defenseman has led the NHL in assists since Orr in 1974-75 when he tied Bobby Clarke with 89. Only Orr and Paul Coffey have finished a season in the top three in points. No defenseman has scored 30 goals since Washington's Mike Green had 31 in 2008-09. In the last 10 years, only eight defensemen had even topped 70 points.

Presumably either Karlsson or Burns is going to win the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman, although it's not just about scoring. Karlsson has won the award twice, including last season when he had 21 goals and 45 assists. He also leads the league in average time on ice this season and 29:05 per game. The Norris Trophy has never gone to a defenseman whose team missed the playoffs, however. Ottawa doesn't look likely to make it. San Jose should and is still in the Pacific Division race. The Sharks are +650 to win the Western Conference for the first time in franchise history.

Big Loss For Stars

Crushing loss for the Dallas Stars as they battle Chicago and St. Louis for the Central Division lead and potential No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. Stars center Tyler Seguin will miss three to four weeks because of a cut to his Achilles' tendon suffered on the skate of Tampa Bay defenseman Anton Stralman late in Thursday's game. General manager Jim Nill said that Seguin suffered a 15 percent cut, but that he should be back for the playoffs. For a point of comparison, Karlsson suffered a 70 percent tear in 2013 and it sidelined him 10 weeks.

"I can't really picture myself missing Game 1," Seguin said of the playoffs. "If I can come back for the last game of the regular season that would be quite the goal for me."

The Stars lead the NHL in scoring at 3.2 goals per game. Seguin is tied for fourth in the league with 73 points and seventh in goals with 33. Dallas currently leads the Blues by two points atop the Central and the Blackhawks by four. The Stars are +550 to win the West.

This Week's Games To Watch

Los Angeles at Minnesota, Tuesday: NBC Sports Network national TV game. It's the second of a back-to-back for the Kings, who entered Monday's trip to Nashville having had at least one point in seven straight games to pull away a bit from Anaheim atop the Pacific. They haven't won a division title in 25 years. Los Angeles is the first Western Conference team to clinch a playoff spot. Oddsmakers have taken notice as well as the Kings are now +300 favorites to win the West. The Wild are outside of the playoff field looking in currently. They have 79 points, one behind No. 2 wild-card team Colorado. The Wild are 11-6-1 under interim coach John Torchetti. They are 4-0 this season (not all under Torchetti) against Stanley Cup champion Chicago following Sunday's 3-2 shootout victory. The Wild and Kings have split two meetings in L.A. this season.

Boston at NY Rangers, Wednesday: This also is nationally televised on the NBC Sports Network. The Bruins are battling Florida, Tampa Bay and Detroit for the Atlantic Division title. The B's have dropped three straight -- all in California -- and are 16-16-5 at home compared to 23-10-3 on the road. The Rangers are trying to hold on to second place in the Metropolitan Division but they are just 4-4-2 over their past 10. Henrik Lundqvist has given up three goals or more in five straight outings entering Monday. Boston and New York meet for the final time in the regular season. They have split two one-goal games, each winning at home.

Philadelphia at Colorado, Thursday: The Flyers' chances for a wild-card spot took a hit when it was announced on Sunday that goalie Michal Neuvirth probably misses the rest of the regular season. He's dealing with a lower-body injury. Neuvirth is 28-17-8 with a 2.28 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage that ranks him fifth in the league. The Flyers still have Steve Mason, and he's not too shabby, but Mason can't play every single game. For example, the team concludes the regular season with four games in five nights, and every point matters. Rookie Anthony Stolarz is now his backup. He has never played an NHL game. The Avs may not have winger Nathan MacKinnon again here. He injured his knee in Friday's win over Calgary and missed Sunday's game. His 52 points rank second on the team.

St. Louis at Washington, Saturday: It's the Blues' only trip to the nation's capital this season. That Seguin injury for Dallas could help St. Louis more than any team as it appears to be the top threat in the Central Division with the Blackhawks in a funk right now. Goalie Brian Elliott returned to the lineup and made his first start Saturday since suffering an injury on Feb. 22, He shut out the Canucks. The Capitals have very little to play for at this point as they are going to finish with the most points in the NHL. They can clinch the top seed in the East this week and remain Cup favorites at +400. Thus, you might see the team put up a stinker or two the rest of the way. That was the case Sunday night in a 6-2 loss to Pittsburgh. St. Louis and Washington haven't played yet. They close the regular season against one another on April 9.
