If we voted which game is more violent and thus populated with more tough guys, I would say football. I once heard something along the lines of getting hit by an NFLlinebacker is like being in a car crash.
For the purpose of this question, I voted hockey. It seems like more of them take tough licks, get up and skate to the bench or go after the puck. Also, they stand there toe to toe and with bare knuckles, fight a round, got to the box, wipe off the blood and come back onto the ice a few minutes later. Seems pretty tough to me.

A guy may take a greater consistent beating in a football game but number of games played in a season is really the key.
Toughest of the tough were the old pre-mask goalies. Stop the period with let's say 5 minutes left. Give them time to put in about 50 or 60 stitches while the ice is cleaned by guys skating with snow shovels and pulling water machines. Then add the five minutes and play a 25 minute period with the same goalie back in there with still nothing protecting his face and the fresh 50 or 60 stitches.

HOCKEY. Where else do you have guys 5'5 160 skating at a high speed only to run into a brick-wall defenseman that goes 6'3 245? I would say the contact may compare to the NFL in that respect, but when you throw in the boards, there is no comparison. I'm a huge fan of open ice hits, but some guys just crumble against the boards.
Plus, the whole face is exposed. Rarely is there a game where someone doesn't get broken open and have blood drip down his face.
Finally, I rarely see NFL, NBA, or any other sport have guys out there with stitches on their face, broken jaws, black eyes, etc. They normally sit out.

No question there, along w/ Pride and Muy Thai..u ever see Thai boxing. Their shins are liek baseball bats. But he said team sports, so thats why I came with Hockey.
I tell you what, as gay as this sounds, gynastics is brutal. Anything taht requires drastic dieting as well as top pperformance makes the sport taht much tougher.
Amatuer wrestling, boxing, gymnastics, skating, etc. Mentally and physically a nightmare living on the scales.
