Todd Haley was hired as coach of the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday after helping the Arizona Cardinals reach the Super Bowl as coordinator of one of the NFL's most exciting offenses.

Todd Haley with Cardinal QB Kurt Warner.

Haley, 41, joins a team that went a franchise-worst 2-14 under coach Herm Edwards, who was fired Jan. 23. Edwards lost all but two of his last 25 games and launched a rebuilding project that made the Chiefs the league's youngest team this season.

Scott Pioli, hired last month as general manager, said at a news conference that Haley has a "strong understanding of players and the type of players that create championship football teams."

Haley called this an "ideal situation" for him and "a chance to work with someone I have experience with in Scott."
Edwards was considered a players' coach by the Chiefs. Haley can be combative with players. During the NFC Championship Game against the Eagles, he had a first-half argument with Kurt Warner, then a short blowup in full view of teleision cameras with receiver Anquan Boldin. He also had a spat with Terrell Owens when he was receivers coach in Dallas.

Agree 100%.

Can you blame the guy though?

Not many people, let alone NFL fans ever heard of him before this season.

Now he walks on water. NFL HC jobs are hard to come by and are a once in a lifetime chance. You take it when you can get it. You can set your family up for life.

500K per year is much different than 2.5 mil per year no matter how you slice it.

he will fail there, not a good hire.

shannahan would have been a much better hire. they need to draft either a stud OT this year or matt stafford. i would build the OL first though and then hope to suck next year and get bradford.

As a Tampa Bay fan we're dealing with a similar situation here this year with them giving Raheem Morris the head job.

Great for those guys to get opportunities but it's mystery as to what you'r getting...

Hey Wil, thats Leinart with Warner in the picture and not Haley

Opps, actually all three with those beards and ball caps look a little alike.

November 18, 2007 - Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley gives instructions during an NFL football game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Haley is a vocal coach, who says, ""I wear my heart on my sleeve. And that's the way I go about business and I have to deal with that on a full-time basis." (Al Behrman/AP)

But with 3 out of the four final teams in the playoffs coaches' having 2 years or less experience you have to see this as being the trend of hiring new coaches rather than retreads. It was painfully obvious that players weren't responding to Chucky.

Mike Shanahan for example is not your average retread. Of course he probably demands around 10 times the salary that a guy like Raheem Morris is getting. Winning back to back Super Bowls like Shanahan did will do that though (of course he had some special help in the form of John Elway).

He was also offense coordinator for some of the best offenses ever on the 49ers.
