...would you care to give a description on the general style of play.

The EPL and SPL, I believe, are regarded as more physical, wide-open and attack-minded leagues.

What about 1. Bundesliga , Serie A, La Liga & Ligue 1?

Thanks.

I read in an article on soccernet last year that the Bundesliga actually has the highest number of goals per game amongst the bigger leagues. Don't know if that is true as I never researched it, but I imagine it is if they actually put it in the article. Don't watch Bundesliga so I can't comment beyond that.

EPL and La Liga are pretty attack minded leagues with La Liga being more of a passing league (much like the Spanish team, short, quick passes, short, quick midfielders). Only Arsenal really play that style in the EPL. EPL is more physical than La Liga.

Serie A is much more defensive save for Roma and probably Fiorentina. Much like the Italian team, more pragmatic and defense minded, don't t play the high back line like EPL teams do. Serie A is probably the most top heavy of the leagues with Juve, Milan, Inter and Roma far, far better than the rest of the league, although Milan actually finished 5th this year and didn't make Champions League. The second tier of teams (Samp, Udinese, Fiorentina) can contend for 4th place but usually come up short. The rest of the league is generally absolute shit and gets run ragged by the bigger teams.

EPL has the best and deepest "middle" group of teams. Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and ManU almost never lose at home (Chelsea hasn't lost in like 80+ straight, Arsenal only once in about 55 games at Emirates). Middle group would include Aston Villa, ManCity, Spurs, Everton, Blackburn (though they just lost their manager who is a really good manager) and even the teams below them aren't entirely bad. As a whole, EPL's best are probably better than the best in the other leagues, their middle are significantly better IMO and their worst (save the absolute worst like a Derby) are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the worst in the other leagues. Much more competitive top to bottom IMO with only Spain being comparable.

Spain isn't as top heavy with only Barca and Real being generally far superior than everyone else, then spots 3-7 or so being very competitive amongst a number of quality teams. Don't know much about the lesser teams in Spain.

i think Germany has the most goals as well, i've noticed that they have more totals lined at 3, rather than 2.5, than all of the other leagues. SPL, though i haven't really followed it much, looks like a 2horse race every year. and the teams in the rest of the league aren't even close to competing with Celtic or Rangers.

Celtic and Rangers win every year, in recent years there have been some decent teams that finish third, and qualify for Europe in qualifiers. Hearts was pretty good 2 years ago, Hibs last year. I would agree with Germany they score more goals than any other league... great for overs. Serie A seems like there are more cards than any other league that opens the door occasionally for other teams when they get a man up.

The avg. goals scored last season in each league were:

Bundesliga: 2.81
Liga: 2.69
English Prem: 2.64
Seria A: 2.55

The spanish league is by far the best in terms of footballing ability. If you appreciate technically sound football then la liga is the way to go every time. And im not only talking about the top teams, pick a game with two bottom teams and the quality is still up there. La liga is also the least 'top heavy' of the leagues meaning that although Barca and Madrid will always be in the top four, there will be different oponents each year that will push them all the way eg. Sevilla, Villareal, Valencia etc.

Serie A has received a bad name over the years and I dont think it paints an accurate picture of what the league is right now. Most people see Serie A as a defensive, overly tactical and boring league which is far from reality. There are number of teams that play attacking football right now. Teams like Roma, Atalanta, Fiorentina, Udinese and Sampdoria all play attractive football and are leading the way for others to follow. Serie A has suffered as a result of all the corruption and the financial situation of the clubs is not in the best shape. However I can see the league improving year on year.

The EPL is the most top heavy league I have seen in many years. You have basically two leagues going on. Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. And then the rest. The gap between 4th and 5th last year was 11points compared to 2pts in Serie A and 0pts in La Liga. In the past 5 years only 2 teams broke into the top four and both times because Liverpool had particularly bad seasons. This trend will only get worse. The difference between the top four and the rest is enormous.
Although the technical quality of the football played in the EPL is getting better, there is still a significant gap to the spanish league. There is generally less build up play and creativity in the the EPL. Goals are more likely to come from crosses and direct passes from the defenders than clever one-two passes around the box. Of course this doesnt apply to the top four. The inferior technical ability of the EPL is reflected in the International teams performance.

alense made some interesting comments. I had heard the same negatives about Serie A but when I watched a couple of matches late last season, I thought there was primarily attack-minded play.

Anyone care to chime in on French Ligue 1 style of play?

Thanks to all that added their opinions.

i used to follow this league more closely but it's definitely the most boring to watch when grouped with the leagues above. don't have numbers in front of me but I'm positive avg goals per game is less than the four leagues above. In contrast to the bundesliga totals on the board, majority of French games are lined at 2. Lyon have owned the league and have won it 7 straight seasons i believe. the closest race during their reign was this last season when Bordeaux challenged them and fell 1 or 2 points short.

Thanks, MrC.

It seems, unlike in the MLS, that there are a dominant few that control their league.

Italian league isn't defensive. It's just an old stereotype. In recent years there have been some very interesting attacking formations in that league.

As for Ligue 1, it's like Cleo said. Defensive and boring. A couple of years ago it got so bad that there were calls on the football federation to change the points system to reward teams for scoring goals!

Edit: Completely agree with Alense. Spanish league offers up infinitely more quality than the EPL. Bar one or two sides, every team in La Liga possesses some sort of capability to play good technical football. Whereas in the Premier League, about half the teams are shitty long ball teams with a bigger focus on running around like headless chickens and barging everyone out of the way. Rubbish.
