I am not new to betting, but new to losing like this….. The first few weeks have just killed me, and maybe some of you…. But what do you guys do when your down ?? Bet smaller and make it back in small pieces??? Bet big on a game you feel confident about ???<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I also put some cash down on baseball, and thought I would make a bit back the other day, just to have the Phillies and the Dodgers lose with walk off hits in the bottom of the 9th on the same night….

Just curious on how you guys handle the rough times.. I think I need to just lower each play and try to “survive” the season, because every time you think a game is a “LOCK” , it’s a for sure loser.

First of all, never play scared. In this business like every other business, confidence is the most important thing.

Don't think about getting back what you lost. Slowly chip away and remember this is a marathon and not a sprint.

I noticed you said you bet some baseball the other night. I don't think you probably studied the games and just took both Favs.

Be patient and don't bet baseball or any other sport, unless you follow and research it or are tailing someone. The biggest mistake most people make is, they think they are going to recoup everything in one day or one weekend.

If you are strictly a football bettor, remember there are still 12 weeks in college plus the Bowl Games and 14 NFL weekends, plus the playoffs. No need to rush or try and recover immediately.

Depending on your bankroll, you may need to scale back the number of plays and the amount wagered. Keep that in mind.

Go with games you confident in, don't pick games because they are on TV, pick the game that you think is the best.

Tough beat on the walk offs. Have had many, but never 2 in a night. You said it best in your last paragraph, no locks.
Consider this-
1. Set a limit- you reach that point your done for the season. If you can't stop, then you have a problem- simple as that.
2. Depending on your bankroll, keep the same unit size. For example, if you started the season with $2K and are down to $1K, but have been playing $50/ game, you can still do that. This may go against some of the money managers that go by % of bankroll, but IMO that is acceptable. On the other hand if your normal bet is $100 and you are down to $1k, then you need to adjust. I try to stay at 5% or less/game.
3. If you've had success in the recent past and have not changed methods this season, then stick to your guns b/c you know it works. If you are scanning the lines for winners with no work involved you are better off finding a hot hand on here and tailing picks.
4. Stay consistent. If your going to make a play based on certain reasoning, then do it everytime. This will eliminate second guessing yourself and chasing.
5. AT THIS POINT- remeber there are still months of football left- be patient with your $$$

My 2 cents......

Good Luck

if you bet 1% - 3% of your bankroll per play, you shouldn't change a thing. Well maybe your approach to betting the games if need be, but money wise you should continue to use money mgt. If you weren't using it to begin with I would certainly start now. Chasing, or pressing will only get you in more trouble.

goodluck, hope it turns around for you

I really appreciate it guys.... I'm not in any danger of losing the house or anything, just have never seen a slump like this before. The confidence is shattered due to bad breaks so I am second guessing everything. I have been following some people on here and it always seems to be the games they lose. Ha, maybe I'm the bad luck charm. I should post my picks and have everyone fade me !!

I really like this site, though some of the griping between homers is a little crazy, but you'll have that anywhere.

Let's hope we get the winning started this weekend in college. Luckily the NFL has helped me out a lot.

Trust me it happens to the best of us. When you starting winning again, you will start to see the games much more clearly and have less of an issue.

I have been in situations, where I won't take a certain play, even though I know it is the correct side, because my confidence has gone down. A couple of wins and you should be back in the saddle.

Remember- stay consistent. If your going to follow someone, its my opinoin you should follow all of their plays. If not, you have the chance of only picking out the losers while the rest of the card was a winner. All or none.

Bigten, Dug, homedog and Gus..... Just want to say thanks for the advice. It's nice to get grown-up responses... I just need to stick to the plan and not try to get it all back at once. I will be keeping my ears and eyes open... Who on this forum are respectable cappers ??? Not trying to create a stir, just curious.

Great advice from Bigtendominator. I'd also add that I find it helpful to have a memory like a DB. After a good week, you don't want to get too full of yourself and start betting carelessly; just as after a bad week you don't want to get too down on yourself and start betting too conservatively.

While some folks look for great value in the beginning of the season and believe that that is where the most money is to be made, I generally play more conservatively early in the season as I consider the first 3-4 weeks the "learning period." From that learning period, you have to try to gauge how much reaction is going to be applied to each team in ensuing weeks vs. what you believe should actually be applied. But that's what works for me...you've gotta do what works for you or whatever method you're most comfortable with.
