DEBKAfile’s Iraq sources: All 14 Iraqi mainstream parties and groups want US to postpone January elections indefinitely. The demand came from multi-ethnic, multi-religious conference Thursday and Friday at Kurdish resort town of Dukan that ended in discord on most other issues.

Battle rages near Baghdad airport after heavy attack on US troop convoy causes American casualties and destroys three vehicles. US helicopters called in.
Daylong insurgent outbreaks in Baghdad and Sunni Triangle. In Baghdad, one American soldier killed, 9 injured in ambush near Sheraton. Four Iraqi public works officials assassinated.
In northern town of Mosul, some 3,000 US and Iraqi troops restore order following counter-insurgent operation that left 15 rebels dead, 45 in custody. In Ramadi, 5 Iraqis killed. More violence flares also in Tikrit, Samarra and Baiji.

Yeah, I got a good laugh out of these idiots who thought we'd enter Fallujah and wipe out the resistance in like 6 days and then on the seventh day there would be flowers growing and democracy in place......

.....supposed to be done in six days, and we've been there how many months, doing the same thing day in and day out?

I don't get it. Why do they have to postpone the elections? Even interim elections are better than nothing. The leaders keep telling us things get better every day, now is time to prove it. If nothing else it will at least secure legitimacy, unless Team Bush is genuinely concerned about what the results might be. If so then it is a total fallacy to say you are out to spread democracy in the region. Elections must be held soon, indefinitely delaying them does no good even if the country isn't quite stable yet.
