New York Islanders ML +140
New York Islanders+0.5 (+105)
New York Islanders/Washington Capitals Under 5.5 (-103)
The NY Islanders are a very defensive oriented team this year playing the TRAP strategy. However, the Capitals are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games versus the Islanders. Nevertheless, this is a new year, and the Islanders were 7-0 during Preseason hockey 26 GF and only 8 GA (going 5-0 on the road). The Islanders have one of the best defensive corps in the Eastern Conference - rolling out Janne Niinimaa, Roman Hamrlik, Kenny Jonsson, Adrian Aucoin, Eric Cairns and Radek Martinek (while prospect Mattias Timander is on the farm team).
The Islanders have a nice mix of talent and grit up front led by one of the most talented players in the league in Yashin and Peca. As long as the Islanders contain the Capitals line of Jagr-Bondra-Lang and are effective on the special teams - the Islanders have a great shot at winning this game as underdogs! The Islanders can definitely capitalize on the Capitals weakness (which is there defense) since the Capitals have lost one-third of its starting six defense and made no moves/attempts to fill the gap. Coach Cassidy of Washington will have to make do with Sergei Gonchar, Brendan Witt and a cast of youngsters and/or unknowns.
This should be a very close game, and the Islanders are much improved from last year; while the Capitals are quite 'questionable' on defense. Islanders should win in a close one! Definitely playing the Canadian line and Moneyline at PLUS money! And the UNDER went 3-1 last season between the Capitals and the Islanders (who are much BETTER DEFENSIVE team this year)
Crazy Ivan's Projected Score: NYI 3 - WSH 1
Buffalo Sabres +0.5 (+138)
A lot of value here in the Sabres - Biron over Hackett!?! The Sabres are 7-3 in their last 10 meetings vs the Flyers...and the UNDER is 7-2-1. However, the oddsmakers also perceive the under as money - hence, the UNDER 5 at -130...wow! The Sabres are really a descent defensive team, as long as they can contain their oppositions' number one and two scoring line every game they will definitely have a chance to win the game outright. Last year the Sabres finished sixth in the Eastern Conference in goals against and sixth in penalty killing. The Sabres have a young offensive crew upfront with Drury-Briere-Satan, and Gratton, Kotalik and Zetterberg... Going to take my chances on the young Sabres team (who seems to always play well against the Flyers). However, its quite scary seeing a Flyers lineup which are comprised of explosive players such as Mark Recchi, Jeremy Roenick, Michal Handzus, Keith Primeau, Sami Kapanen, Kim Johnsson, Eric Desjardins and Tony Amonte...
Crazy Ivan's Projected Score: BUF 2 - PHI 1 (OT)
