Northfield: Thursday 8/21 Analysis
By Ken Walters
DRF HARNESS
Race 8 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: MR ABERDEEN (8th)

Spot Play: ANASTASIA WIGGLE (1st)

Race 1

(3) ANASTASIA WIGGLE faces a motley crew and if she puts in similar effort as qualifier, she can take this. Gets the call because field is weak and price should be outrageous. (5) I NEED YOU has a win to his credit and that sets him apart from most of these. (3) A PRINCES TALE needs to stay flat but that could be all it takes.

Race 2

(3) TRESNER SEELSTER almost won two back and that sets him apart from most of these. (6) RELLA ON ATTACK has finished wide in his last few and earns a look if he can show some determination. (9) SOUTH PARK KID has to overcome what can be serious early traffic but seems on the verge of an upset.

Race 3

(4) ROSE RUN NEMO has flashed good late speed last two. (1) MYSTICAL SAM should be ideally placed and a late rally does it. (3) FORTUNE KING finished well two back and had to come wide into the lane in last. Some racing luck can get him home.

Race 4

(3) CAPTAIN SCRUFFY drops to a more suitable level and earns the nod. (5) STROSKI has faced this kind in recent and seems more capable in here. (4) SLOT ARTIST has an improved post and faces a weak lot.

Race 5

(1) HOORALY FOR WILLIE is not a world beater, never was and never will be, but seemed like he had a modest future last year; won some races, banked some money and paid some bills. He has the rail, faces much weaker than he is accustomed to and it is now or never. (8) BUILDING WEALTH upset the applecart in last at 50-1 and faces similar. (2) SMOKEN STORMS broke before the start in last but two prior were very good efforts. Drops back to the level of his last win and earns long look.

Race 6

(7) BET ON BLUE has had fewer losing efforts than most in this weak field. (1) MISSY KEYS has the rail and that is enough to think she has a chance against these. (8) UNLIMITED WINNER was much improved in latest, but that was a front-stepping effort from the rail--and he did not break, which is something he has a habit of doing.

Race 7

(3) BLUE TIME ICE LADY seems to have more late speed that the rest of these and with the right drive, she gets it done. (6) STRONG TOGETHER changed barns for last and improved. Modest improvement makes her the main threat. (1) CARMELITAS GIRL draws the rail and takes a modest drop in company.

Race 8

(2) MR ABERDEEN has won a few of recent and faces slightly weaker. (1) MOMS LOOKER has had the opportunity to win last two and should be close at the wire once more with the rail trip. (6) CREDIT SCORE faces much weaker while looking to get back to the winner's circle.

Race 9

(3) VODKAINDUCEDDREAMS has been pounding away and collecting money with every race. (8) TARPORT BELLE won last from the rail but has shown an ability to find a rail trip from the outside, so the post may not be a major liability. (1) SOAKING UP THE SUN will welcome the rail and use it well.

Race 10

(4) MISS RILEY set a new lifetime mark in last and prior were decent efforts. (6) CLASSICAL LOVE has been improving in recent and a win is right around the corner. (7) ROLN MASTER was nailed by the choice in last but put in a good front-stepping effort in the process.

Race 11

(1) MR DYLAN has improved last two and has the rail in beatable field. He can hardly ask for more in his favor. (4) BLUE SCOOTIN MATT has shown some late speed last two and could be along in time if the speed falters. (3) KING RICHARD dropped to this level in last but was parked too long to give it his best.

Race 12

(4) STURDYS BABY beat most of these in last two races with game rallies and seeks third straight victory. (9) ALADY FOR SURE was second to the choice in her last two weeks back. (7) FERRISWHEEL JUNKIE was second to the choice in his race last week. (8) BUSTED FLAT was third to the choice in his last two.

Race 13

(6) ICONIC STYLE gets the nod to be little tighter tonight and close on these. (7) BLINDSIDED was used too hard in the early going last time. Post hurts a bit as this beaten favorite tries to atone. (4) ROYAL ONE seldom wins but has been close often.

Race 14

(5) WATERHOUSE closed well two back but last was a no-luck effort over the sloppy track. (2) K C COLT gets the call if you forgive his effort in the sloppy going last time. (7) SPUDCAM has faced better over the track in the recent past. He should appreciate the drop in company.

Race 15

(2) CYCLONE ASHORE won last from post two and faces similar. (3) CANT SLAY ME fits well at this level and has had some paydays facing this kind. (5) FIRST AFTER ME tried to wire in last but ran out of gas. Moves off the rail for this but faces similar and it is the third race off the qualifier, so he could be tighter this evening.

DRF HARNESS
Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: MAJESTIC GINGER (6th)

Spot Play: P L HALFWAY (2nd)

Race 1

(3) WANNA ROCK N ROLL recently entered the Shawn Robinson barn and has turned for the better. The Rocknroll Hanover miss has a 1-2-2 record in her last five starts since the barn change and is fresh off a win last week in this class. (1) PALM BEACH HANOVER is a main threat in this class once again as the Somebeachsomewhere filly has been knocking on the door in recent outings for trainer David Menary. (9) RIVETING continues to offer quick speed and has a good record this season for trainer Eric Adams.

Race 2

(2) P L HALWAY will get my top selection in this wide-open contest. He draws inside and drops in class for trainer Matt Dupuis. (9) YANKEE PUZZLE has hit the board in three of six starts and raced very strong in her latest in this class as the filly closed from ninth-to-third from a post 10 start. (10) CAPTURETHEMEMORY will once again begin from the outside for the third week in-a-row. The Per Henriksen trainee has the speed, but will need to put a full mile together

Race 3

(4) POLK DOT HANOVER drops into a condition claimer for the first time in her career for trainer David Menary and the Western Ideal filly will look to capitalize. (5) SHANGHAI MIMI has been racing against conditioned foes in each of her last three starts on this circuit and makes her way into the claiming ranks on this occasion. (1) MISS DOLLAR MAM will make her debut for new trainer Carmen Auciello and has been blessed with the rail in this dash.

Race 4

(3) LIFE IS A BEACH begins from a much needed better post after drawing outside in each of her last two starts. She also drops in class for trainer Jeff Gillis. The daughter of Somebeachsomewhere will appreciate the easier field. (2) ARTISTIC FUSION made a much better impression last week in her second start for trainer Joe Agostino. (8) OK GODIVA comes from the Mark Steacy barn and raced very well last week.

Race 5

(1) HOMEN DRY made a big step last week with a winning effort in the second leg for trainer Brad Maxwell. (5) BOLI comes from top connections and if he minds his manners, he has a lot of upside. He's due for a win and it may come in here in just his third career start. (7) JETPEDIA enjoys using her gate speed, gets Saftic back aboard and the talented trotter is a top threat for the triactor.

Race 6

(2) MAJESTIC GINGER is fresh off a winning effort in this class one week ago and is very capable of doubling up for driver Clarke Steacy. (6) HUNKOFBURNINLOVE has finished second in each of his last two starts in this class and has hit the board in three of his last four. (7) SO NOT COOL has the speed, but will need to mind his manners for trainer Ben Baillargeon.

Race 7

(4) MINESTRE HANOVER put forth a sub-par effort in his most recent outing, but he'll begin for new connections tonight. (5) USEFUL HANOVER draws in the middle of the gate and was a game second last week in this class. (8) P L GYRO won in this class last week to earn his first win of the season. He was 0-for-25 prior, which is a concern.

Race 8

(8) MR LINDY comes from the same maternal family as Lindy Lane (1:53 - $895,110) and is a perfect one-for-one to begin his career. (2) RAGAZZO DOLCE is a top threat in this class if he can minds his manners and receive a clean trip. (4) CAVIART GRIFFIN has hit the board in three of his last four starts for trainer/driver Dustin Jones.

Race 9

(4) MITT JAGGER was ultra-impressive in his career debut on August 14 as the rookie pacer scored an open-length victory in 1:53 1/5 for Team Young. (3) PENJI HANOVER was a $120K yearling purchase and will make his debut on this circuit in this contest. The Tony Alagna trainee draws well and has been much better in each of his last two pari-mutuel starts. (2) MIGRATE BLUE CHIP has been racing very well, continues to show quick speed and will get a new pilot this week in Rick Zeron

Race 10

(9) DAMFOOLRMILLIONAIRE has a terrific record this season and made a successful jump in class last start with a second-place effort. (3) FANTASTIC FLIRT draws inside once again this week, has the speed and will aim for another solid effort on this bigger surface. Don't expect 29-1 like last week. (2) EXEMPLAR was a winner two back in this class in his 2014 debut. Got away too far back last week and wasn't a factor.

Race 11

(1) PORSCHE SEELSTER gets major class relief as she drops out of the Ontario Sires Stakes Gold series and into this much easier classification. (8) PAID IN CASH will make just her fifth career start and has yet to miss the board in her young career. (2) J HIGH has all kinds of closing speed, but tends to not be in position in the middle stages of the mile. She's a threat for the triactor.

Yonkers: Thursday 8/21 Analysis
By Brewster Smith
DRF HARNESS

MEET STATS: 240 - 925 / $1,532.80 BEST BETS: 19 - 77 / $82.10

Best Bet: MEETBEHINDTHEBARN (8th)

Spot Play: OUTA MY HEAD (6th)

Race 1

(4) LITTLE MERMAID N could make Thursday a winning night with a better trip. (3) UPFRONTWHOSURLADY put in two nice runs and appears to be a threat. (1) PUTNAMS GLORY was nailed for win honors last out.

Race 2

(2) VIDA DE VIE made a bad break in her latest at Pocono. Trotting miss fits well in here and the two slot can help her cause. (7) CASHCO could make some noise with a better trip. (5) TSMLIL ORPHAN ANDY put in a mild rally in his recent outing.

Race 3

(1) APACH OF LUCK gets serious post relief. Pacing mare could boss these from the fence. (4) CANACO STAR did not race badly in her last trip. (7) SPRINGHOUSE STAR has hit the board in her last three tries.

Race 4

Will try (4) ALL STAR DRAGON to get back to his winning form. The 4-hole might help; maybe. (2) KID CRUISER moves inside for this event. Gelding could be the main danger in here. (1) NATURAL HABITAT could fare quite well from the fence.

Race 5

(4) FLEX THE MUSCLE just missed the victory last out and had to settle for place money. Seven-year-old seems to be ready for action against this group. (3) THE NORTHERN DUDE was sent down the road in his recent try for all the glory upstate. (2) MAMA MADE ME BLUE raced evenly in his last start; watch out.

Race 6

(3) OUTA MY HEAD needs a much better trip than in his last start. If he gets involved early, he could get the job done. (5) CUTTY SHARK leaves the 8-hole and has fine speed; main danger. (2) GETONTHEWAY could land a share of the purse.

Race 7

(6) TEXAS CAVIAR flashed fine speed in her last try. Pacing mare can take this with a fine-timed drive from Carlson. (3) KAMWOOD LAUGHTER N gets post relief and that could help her chances tonight. (4) UP FRONT CRUISER has wheeled off two straight victories against lesser.

Race 8

(7) MEETBEHINDTHEBARN had to settle for the show spot as the 4-5 favorite last time out. The good news is Brennan keeps the faith with this gelding; all systems go to bring home all the bacon. (5) SOUTHWIND CHASE could be right in the swing of things against these. (6) TALKTOMECOURAGE N has speed and clearly is not out of this.

Race 9

(1) ROCK N LOAD moves to the 1-hole and this gal moves down the ladder. Ready to rock and roll over this group. (5) SO NICE was sent down the road last out for win honors at Tioga. (4) I DO IT MYSELF has scored in her last three trips to the post.

Race 10

(2) MIKELEH comes off a mile that indicates she is ready to put her best foot forward. (1) KNOW IT ALL closed well to grab the victory last time around. (5) SIR JILLIAN Z TAM moves down in class.

Race 11

(1) JAILHOUSE FUNK is better than his last flop. Trotting gelding could get back on the right track from the 1-hole. (5) RINGSIDE MUSCLE is a sharp trotter that put in three good efforts; big threat. (8) TROTTIN TROY got the job done last out via the pocket route.

Race 12

(1) FLYING MOCHA was used up in the early stages last time around. This should be a better spot for her to get the job done. (2) CANT STOP ME NOW was just a little short for win honors last time out; dangerous. (4) ALITTLEEASTERMAGIC put in a mild rally for the placing recently at Philly; can't count her out of this.

KEY STAT: Spurs have lost just one of their last seven Europa League aways

EXPERT VERDICT: Cypriot football is on the up but AEL Limassol are unlikely to cause Tottenham any problems. AEL won 15 of 18 home league games last season en route to second place behind APOEL on goal difference but they may struggle against Spurs, who will be keen to impress new gaffer Mauricio Pochettino.

KEY STAT: Lokeren have kept one clean sheet in seven home games

EXPERT VERDICT: Hull made hard work of their 2-1 aggregate success over Trencin but they’ll be further along in terms of fitness now and can seal a first-leg victory in Belgium. Lokeren have recently sold star striker Hamdi Harbaoui to Qatar Sports Club and the Belgians’ lack of cutting edge could cost them in this tie.

Race 7 - Maiden Special Weight - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $31000 Class Rating: 88

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 121 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 9 BOBBLEHEAD 3/1

# 8 BENNY IS A JET 7/2

# 2 NOBADEER 6/1

BOBBLEHEAD looks decent to best this field. Could best this group of animals here, showing competitive figs of late. Stidham has him trained strongly to break sharply out of the gate. Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figures of this group in his last contest. BENNY IS A JET - With Roman aboard him, this gelding will most likely be able to break out sharply in this competition. Put up a solid Equibase Speed Figure last time out. NOBADEER - With a nice class fig average of 88, has one of the strongest class advantages in this group. Boasts strong Equibase speed figs on average overall when measured up against the rest of this field.

Race 7 - Allowance - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $36000 Class Rating: 87

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON THREE RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE JULY 21 ALLOWED 2 LBS.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 4 MIFFED 9/2

# 3 MY CHRISTINI 4/1

# 1 BROWN EYED MARY 5/2

I've got to go with MIFFED. Could best this group here, showing competitive figures of late. Creed has solid numbers that point to this filly to be a strong contender. Has solid front speed and will probably fare well against this field. MY CHRISTINI - Has garnered strong Equibase Speed Figs in dirt sprint races in the past. Goncalves has been on fire the last month, winning at a nifty 15 percent rate. BROWN EYED MARY - Is a definite contender - given the 88 Equibase speed fig from her most recent race. I like the rider on this filly - decent chance to win the contest.

#6 ANNIE BO JANIE (ML=12/1)
#5 TOUGH WEATHER (ML=6/1)

ANNIE BO JANIE - Likes to go to the lead and the fact that today is a shorter trip should help. I like this entrant. Should be familiar with this level since she ran against the same type in the last race at Thistledown. TOUGH WEATHER - Nice return on investment for this jockey and conditioner twosome. After the race aboard this horse on Jul 19th, the jockey is going to know the filly much better. I believe this horse will be right there at the wire. Gets Lasix for the second time, so Butts must have confidence in her. This filly was overlooked in the betting when she made her debut July 19th. Look for another big effort today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1A BACKYARD BIRDIE (ML=9/5), #1 NINA LINDA (ML=9/5), #2 FISCAL FEAR (ML=5/2),

BACKYARD BIRDIE - 52/38/29, are the deteriorating Equibase speed figs for this mount. NINA LINDA - Hasn't raced or had any works since July 23rd. Not much value on this probable favorite. FISCAL FEAR - Not a good 'situation' in this clash.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Put your money on #6 ANNIE BO JANIE on the nose if you can get odds of 5/2 or more

#3 HEY JUDY (ML=8/1)
#6 TALENTED TWIST (ML=4/1)
#7 DISTINCT DIVA (ML=9/2)

HEY JUDY - I think the shorter distance will help this filly stay the distance. A repeat of that recent effort on August 6th where she garnered a speed rating of 74 looks lofty enough to triumph in this affair. TALENTED TWIST - I have to figure Faber is making a good move here. This mare can only be aided by the shorter distance. This mare is in first-rate form right now. Finished second in the last race and comes back soon. DISTINCT DIVA - Have to make this filly a serious competitor; she comes off a sharp race on Aug 5th. I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run her best in the 3rd or 4th start back. This horse is number one in earnings per start. She looks solid in today's event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 JEWEL HOUSE (ML=5/1), #8 SWIFTS CHARISMA (ML=6/1), #4 PROBABLY (ML=8/1),

JEWEL HOUSE - This filly didn't do much last time. This filly recorded a speed figure in her last affair which likely isn't good enough today. SWIFTS CHARISMA - Tough to like the downward flow (71/66/49) of speed figures. Finished sixth last time out of the box. Would have to get better to be in the money in today's race. Registered a mediocre speed figure last time out in a $16,000 Claiming race on August 5th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that number. PROBABLY - Finished seventh last time. Would have to improve to hit the board in today's race.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - HEY JUDY - The odds should be right to invest in this magnificent animal. There are some 'hidden' pluses in the last clash.

#3 HEY JUDY is the play if we get odds of 3/1 or better

#6 PILLAR OF STRENGTH
#3 SUDDEN RUMOR
#4 NEWPORT RED
#5 COMPULSIVE

#6 PILLAR OF STRENGTH has hut the board in four of his last five outings, with two of those "board hit efforts," including a win in his 3rd race back, also qualifying as "POWER RUNS." #3 SUDDEN RUMOR has produced a trio of "POWER RUNS" in his last four starts, hitting the board in a pair, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in his 3rd race back. The pace profile leader in this field today is #4 NEWPORT RED, who drops in class (-6), and comes off a "POWER RUN EFFORT" facing better company in his last start ... his past performance sheets show a win to break his maiden in his 2nd race back.

To get to Saratoga from New York City, "you drive north for about 175 miles, turn left on Union Avenue and go back 100 years," wrote the famed sportswriter Red Smith. Along with the racetrack, a number of stately Victorian homes built in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are located along Union Avenue, which is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Here in the 11th running of this stakes event for New York Breds ... #3 SUNNY DESERT is the overall speed and pace profile leader in this stakes field sprinting at, or about, this afternoon's distance of 6½ furlongs on the dirt, and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in each of her last five outings, including a trio of "POWER RUN WINS" being embedded in this recent streak of racing consistency. Jockey Irad Ortiz and Trainer Bruce Levine send her to the post ... they've hit the board with an impressive 72% of their entries saddled as a team to date, with their 28% win rate producing a +42% return on investment in the process. #2 RISKY RACHEL, the morning line favorite, takes a class drop (-7), and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in three of her last five respective outings, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in her 5th race back.

At the Gate - Thursday
By Mike Dempsey

Entries for Saturday’s Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes have come out and we will see a field of 10 go to the post in the Mid Summer Derby at Saratoga.

Haskell Invitational (G1) winner Bayern was installed as the 2-1 morning line favorite and is going to be the one to catch. The question mark is the 1 1/4 miles. The Bob Baffert trainee has not been beyond 1 1/8 miles.

Tonalist of course has been successful at 1 1/2 miles, taking the Belmont Stakes (G1) back in June. Wicked Strong (7-2) will garner plenty of support off his sharp win over Tonalist in the Jim Dandy (G2). The colt ran fourth in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and fourth in the Belmont.

Another colt that has won at 1 1/4 miles is the Shug McGaughey trained Mr Speaker, who won the Belmont Derby (G1) last out on turf. The Travers will be just his second start on conventional dirt. The colt was seventh in the Holy Bull (G2) in January. He did win the Lexington (G3) over polytrack and has worked well over the main track at the Spa.

The Travers Day card also features the $250,000 Ballston Spa, the $500,000 Ballerina and the $500,000 King’s Bishop. The Ballerina and Travers will be part of NBC Sports Network's national telecast from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The Travers has a scheduled post time of 5:46 p.m.

There are 14 races on Saturday, and then we have Pacific Classic Day coming up at Del Mar on Sunday, which offers up an intriguing matchup between the undefeated three-year-old Shared Belief and the defending champion Game On Dude.

In addition, we have an 11-race card at the Spa on Friday that includes a showdown between Close Hatches and Princess of Sylmar in the Grade 1, $500,000 Personal Ensign.

I will catch up on sleep on Monday.

Here is today’s second race (the opener is a steeplechase race) from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 2 Clm $25,000N2L (1:00 ET)
2 Tiz May West 8-5
6 Ocean Boulevard 6-1
3 Morning Star 5-2
5 Gem City Gal 3-1

Analysis: Tiz May West was brushed at the break, tracked the early pace and weakened to finish ninth last out against Alw-1 foes in her local debut. The filly broke her maiden in her debut and then was a good second two back in her first start against winners. She drops in for a tag here for the Stall barn and these Churchill shippers seem to need a race over the surface. She owns the edge in early and mid pace numbers and may be able to take this group gate to wire.

Ocean Boulevard exits the same race as our top pick and she was badly outrun, trailing throughout in an 11th place finish. It was her first go off a nine-month layoff for the Wilkes barn. She broke her maiden over the Spa main track here last summer and was fifth in a couple of stakes before hitting the sidelines. She was dead on the board last out, sent off at 11-1 but expecting to see a better effort out of this gal here today and she may end up offering decent value if she goes off near her 6-1 morning line.

Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 8-5 or better.
EX: 2,6 / 2,3,6
TRI: no play

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 7 Md Sp Wt (3:43 ET)
5 M B and Tee 8-1
7 Guilty Verdict 2-1
1 Dragonberry 6-5
2 Smart Ashley 6-1

Analysis: M B and Tee lost some ground early when she hit the side of the gate after lunging at the break. She came vie wide into the stretch but did not have any punch left in a fifth place finish, beaten four lengths for the top spot. The $110,000 Keeneland purchase came back with a good work since her last outing and with a cleaner break and a race under her belt figures to move forward. The barn is having a tough meeting (1 for 27) but is capable with younger runners. This filly has seven sibs that are winners including a pair of stakes winners, top earner Parker Run ($297,212). She should be a decent price in this spot and she has enough pedigree to handle nine furlongs.

Guilty Verdict stretches back out after checking in third last out going seven furlongs on the main track here. She came back off the bench two back with a decent effort in a fourth place finish on the turf going two turns. She looks primed for a top effort here in her third start off the layoff for the Shug barn. She is out of the stakes winner Smuggler ($654,352) and the nine furlongs should not pose a problem.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 9-2 or better.
EX: 5,7 / 1,2,5,7
TRI: 5,7 / 1,2,5,7 / 1,2,5,6,7

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R3: #1 Bryce Bryce Baby 8-1
R4: #7 Northern Smile 8-1
R6: #6 Champagne Ruby 12-1
R7: #5 M B and Tee 8-1
R8: #4 Rhythm Queen 8-1
R8: #8 Tidal Slam 15-1

Good luck today!
