KEY STAT: Aldershot are unbeaten in their last three away fixtures

EXPERT VERDICT: Eastleigh were emphatic 3-0 winners at Nuneaton on the opening weekend of the Conference Premier season but face a much tougher test at home to Aldershot and may have to settle for a draw. The Shots no longer have the handicap of a ten-point penalty and will be looking to build on their 3-1 triumph at home to Altrincham.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

At the Gate - Thursday
By Mike Dempsey

Rain washed the races off the turf on Wednesday, but we still had a decent day and hopefully you played a big enough Pick 5 ticket to cash for $1,943.00 on a $1 ticket.

My second choice Broadway Bay ($5.70) got things going, followed by my third choice Deseret Valentine ($10.40). My top pick Amulay ($7.90) won the third leg and my second choices won the last two legs, Penella ($24.40) and Eastwood ($4.60).

Penella was the only longshot, and was actually 5-1 on the morning line and completely overlooked in the betting.

Entries for Saturday’s Arlington Million (G1) were drawn on Wednesday and the field of seven will be the smallest field in the 32-year history of the race.

While the field is surprisingly small, it looks as if it will still be an interesting betting race. Last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) winner Magician is the 7-5 morning line favorite. However, the Aidan O’Brien trainee has won just one of five starts.

Defending champion Real Solution (5-2) is coming off a sharp effort winning the Manhattan (G1) at Belmont Park and Up With the Birds (6-1) was a good-looking winner of the Nijinsky (G2) at Woodbine. The race is a “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

The weather for Thursday in New York is on the improve, although the area received a lot of rain Tuesday into Wednesday. I hope that it was not enough to knock us off the turf again today.

Here is today’s second race (the opener is a steeplechase event) from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 2 Md $75,000 (1:00 ET)
1 Flapper Girl / 1a Sky Crew 3-1
2 Magsamelia 5-2
4 Sun and Moon 2-1
3 Vale Ridge 5-1

Analysis: Flapper Girl makes her debut for the Hushion barn that is 10% winners with first timers. Here at the Spa dating back three years the barn has hit with 3 of 10 firsters. The filly is by Corinthian (6% winners with debut runners) out of a Stormy Atlantic mare, her first foal to race, She debuts with lasix and sports a couple of good looking works on the morning tab. Entrymate Sky Crew ran second in three straight starts last fall and faded to finish eighth in her return race last out off a nine month layoff. She should move forward second off the bench.

Magsamelia set the early fractions and could not match strides late with the winner in a runner up finish last out and now drops back in for a tag. The filly was the beaten chalk two and three back, both runner up finishes. She draws the rail and owns solid early and mid pace numbers. She may be tough if she shakes loose early.

Wagering
WIN: #1 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 1,2 / 1,2,4
TRI: no play

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 OClm $40,000N2X (4:49 ET)
8 One Time Only 2-1
7 Run to Mama 12-1
5 Distorted Beauty 9-5
1 Lady Candidate 8-1

Analysis: One Time Only tracked the early pace while saving ground and grabbed the lead heading for home but was caught late, beaten a half-length for the top spot in a game effort going six furlongs on the grass at Belmont Park. The winner of the race was Invading Humor, who beat non-conditioned allowance foes in her next outing on Aug. 4. The fifth place finisher Uncle Southern also won next out, taking a state bred Alw-2 optional claimer here on July 31. The filly broke her maiden at today's one-mile distance and she passed her first allowance condition at Santa Anita going 6 1/2 downhill. The Proctor barn is 16% winners moving runners from sprint to route.

Run to Mama makes her first start since December for the Kimmel barn that is just 1 for his last 16 with runners coming back off a +180 day layoff. The filly has a couple of solid looking works on the morning tab and she beat state bred Alw-1 foes two back in her second start against winners over ground labeled as good and there likely will still be some give to the ground today. Worth tossing in the mix if she goes off near her 12-1 morning line.

Wagering
WIN: #8 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 7,8 / 1,5,7,8
TRI: 7,8 / 1,5,7,8 / 1,2,5,7,8

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R1: #4 Schoodic 8-1
R5: #1 Bernstein Flambe 8-1
R6: #1 Dark Moon 10-1
R7: #1 Zafiro Azul 15-1
R9: #7 Run to Mama 12-1

Good luck today!

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 1 MIDNIGHT BALLET 9/2

# 7 PISTOLS DRAWN 6/1

# 5 ENJOY THE FAMILY 2/1

MIDNIGHT BALLET looks formidable to best this field. Has some encouraging handicapping angles which make this entrant a wager. Posted a reliable speed rating in the latest race. Can run another good one in this race. She has very strong class ratings, averaging 96, and has to be carefully examined for this race. PISTOLS DRAWN - Will likely be one of the early speedsters of the bunch going into the midpoint of the race. Ran a strong last race. ENJOY THE FAMILY - Looks formidable versus this field and will probably be one of the early speedsters. Earning some nice profits in dirt route contests.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 9 SAFARI ARTIE 2/1

# 5 SILENCE 6/1

# 7 BIG BUDGET 4/1

SAFARI ARTIE has a competitive shot to take this race. He has been running strongly and the Equibase Speed Figs are among the strongest in this field. Must be given a shot in this contest if only for the quite good speed figure recorded in the last affair. He has very good class ratings, averaging 97, and has to be carefully examined in this contest. SILENCE - Ran a very solid last race. This gelding is a solid choice based on his earnings per start in dirt route events. BIG BUDGET - Could provide positive dividends based on very good recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 84. Is worth serious consideration and may be a bet - strong speed figures (86 average) at today's distance and surface lately.

Delaware - Race #5 - Post: 3:03pm - Maiden Special - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $30,000 Class Rating: 85

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#1 JOLENE (ML=4/1)

JOLENE - Faced tougher in the last race at Saratoga. Based on Equibase class ratings, this is a weaker bunch, so I will put this animal on my list of probable winners in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 PREMURA (ML=2/1), #2 VIOLETH (ML=3/1), #3 FOXY BALBOA (ML=6/1),

VIOLETH - Unlikely that the speed rating she garnered on June 26th will be enough in this event. FOXY BALBOA - This racer showed little last time out finishing fifth. Can't expect any change in today's event.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - JOLENE - On Jul 25th at Saratoga this filly checked in with a strong final quarter, making her the racer to wager on.

Bet on #1 JOLENE to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds

Del Mar - Race #4 - Post: 3:35pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $25,000 Class Rating: 76

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#8 RAINBOW NORTH (ML=5/1)
#12 COYOTERO (ML=8/1)

RAINBOW NORTH - Pedroza was aboard this gelding last time out and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. That last workout tells me this gelding is set for a top effort. Taking a trip down the class ladder; has the ability to make his presence felt. COYOTERO - Should do well in this race. Weight shift of -7 from July 30th race at Del Mar.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 BOOM BOYS (ML=5/2), #9 MOSSO (ML=3/1), #13 ELEVEN ZIP (ML=5/1),

BOOM BOYS - Hasn't finished in the money in any short distance races recently. Not likely to see him doing it this time out either. MOSSO - In any event of 5 furlongs, I like to wager on a contender that has been sharp in short distance contests of late. ELEVEN ZIP - 5/1 is not pegged at the proper price for any horse in a sprint of 5 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a sprint affair of late. Not probable that the speed rating he garnered on Jul 30th will be enough in this affair.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

#8 RAINBOW NORTH is going to be the play if we are getting 3/2 or better

RACE #2 - DEL MAR THOROUGHBRED CLUB - 2:37 PM PACIFIC POST

8.0 FURLONGS TURF FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD ALLOWANCE $85,000.00 PURSE

#1 QUEEN OF THE SAND
#3 THEATRE STAR
#2 BIORYTHM
#5 SPRING BLOOM

#1 QUEEN OF THE SAND, an Irish-bred entry, is the pace profile leader in this allowance field racing at the mile distance on the turf, and has produced "POWER RUN PERFORMANCES" in five straight starts, hitting the board in three, including a trio of "POWER RUN WINS" being embedded in this recent streak of racing consistency. Jockey Mike Smith was in his irons for that last win, which came at Santa Anita Park, producing a +290% profit for their efforts, and Smith is here at Del Mar today for his 2nd ride, gunning for back-to-back "Circle Trips." #3 THEATRE STAR takes a slight class drop (-1), has also produced "POWER RUN PERFORMANCES" in five straight starts, hitting the board in three, including back-to-back "POWER RUN WINS" in his 4th and 5th races back.

RACE #4 - SARATOGA RACE COURSE - 2:02 PM EASTERN POST

The Saratoga Dew Stakes

9.0 FURLONGS DIRT FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $100,000.00 PURSE

#3 TAHOE TIGRESS
#4 ROYAL SUSPICION
#1A DREAMING OF CARA / #1 CARAMEAWAY
#2 LITTLE ROCKET

Well folks ... first run in 2004, this race for New York-bred fillies and mares was named after the filly who in 1992 became the first state-bred to win an Eclipse Award. Trained by Gary Sciacca for Charles Engel, the daughter of Cormorant won eight times during her championship season as a 3-year-old including victories in the Gazelle, Beldame and Comely stakes. Here in the 11th running of "The Dew," #3 TAHOE TIGRESS shares the overall speed honors in this stakes event racing at 9.0 furlongs on the dirt with the 8-1 shot, #4 ROYAL SUSPICION, and has turned in "POWER RUN PERFORMANCES" in five straight starts, hitting the board in three of those outings, winning twice in this recent streak of racing consistency. Jockey Jose Ortiz has been in her irons on 6 previous occasions, hitting the board in five, winning 4 times, en route to a +129% return on investment in the process, and is back this afternoon for his 7th ride. ROYAL SUSPICION is the pace profile leader, and comes off back-to-back-to-back "POWER RUN PLACE" finishes in her last three starts.

DRF HARNESS

Race 8 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: GLIDED TOWARDS ME (2nd)

Spot Play: SOAKING UP THE SUN (6th)

Race 1

(2) BUSTED FLAT jogged in qualifier three back. Raced twice and improved much in latest. Seems to have no excuse in here. (3) FERRISWHEEL JUNKIE was second best last two and can be the right one with best effort. (4) LUCKY SPIRIT was a beaten favorite in last but the trip could have been better.

Race 2

(3) GLIDED TOWARDS ME just missed in last after a win. Has been too well bet in both to think these are in the hunt. (2) ROYAL STYLE seems to have no idea what it takes to win but is usually collecting a check. (7) SHOOTFORTHESTARZZZ flashed some good late foot in last and seems to do his best from off the pace so he will be closing at the wire.

Race 3

(4) THE ART OF LINDY moves in and faces weaker looking to score first win on the year. (3) ALE ALE JANDRO has shown life in a few of last races and earns a look. (2) CUMMINGSANDGOINGS between bad racing luck and two scratched `sick' lines you have to feel for her. Last was a second place finish in a qualifier and one can only wonder what is going to go wrong this evening.

Race 4

(4) YOULL THINK OF ME suffered broken equipment in latest after two impressive wins and should get back on the winning course in here. (2) CYCLONE ASHORE fits well in here and is the main threat. (7) STARCRAZY gets the nod to edge out the rest for third prize.

Race 5

(5) LEGACY CHIP has been too long wide in last two after a tough luck uncovered effort three back. She has been toughened up now she has to get a decent trip and she will return to the winners circle. (4) E Z GO LAVEC has faced better out of town and should contest the issue. (1) ROCK N ROLL SONG has speed and the rail and will be the one to catch.

Race 6

(8) SOAKING UP THE SUN needs to overcome the post but has shown enough late speed to get that done on best if speed duel develops. (3) HARLEYHANKNJERRY was nailed on the wire in last and should take another shot on the front end. (1) ENDEAVORS BLASTOFF will argue the pace and has his choice of lead or pocket.

Race 7

(5) SHELBY LU crushed the field in last. Faces somewhat better and moves out but was too impressive to overlook. (7) MISS ARIEL won from this post two back with big finish. (4) COW CREEK CINDY closed well in last after being a beaten favorite two back.

Race 8

(2) THE PANTALIST took the lead into the lane two back but faltered, got tightened in last with late rally up the rail. It looks like a win is the logical progression. (4) REAL SERENE has faced better and broke last week as the odds-on favorite. (1) HULA LU has speed enough to stay close to the lane and need only get lucky.

Race 9

(1) ARIANNA HALL has the rail for the second time in a row and looks to atone for last week's beaten favorite effort. (9) MAILMAN BOB has been all over the track in recent effort and needs a `heads up' drive. (8) HIGH GEAR WINNER will be hard pressed to get close enough early enough from this post to be a threat but has hit the board often enough to be considered.

Race 10

(2) STIRLING CORDELIA has been good last three and is looking for second win in a row as she ships from Scioto. (8) WILD LADY LUCK has faced better all of recent efforts and showed life in last coming wide only to flatten out. The big drop in company should suit her well. (6) FLIGHT SEELSTER has hit the board more than half her efforts this season and is always trying.

Race 11

(2) SJS PROPOSAL was wiped out in last and deserves another chance. (4) SAMMY SAMMY SAMMY races second time off the qualifiers and can be right there is tight enough. (3) MISS RILEY has been knocking on the door in all recent.

Race 12

(1) TARPORT BELLE draws the rail and sits pocket until ready. (7) VODKAINDUCEDDREAMS wired the field in last and dug in gamely to earn the win. (5) AMAZING SUZY will be moving late and land a share.

Race 13

(4) QUINTAL BAYAMA was used to the lead, yielded, shuffled and rallied late in last and is a serious threat. (1) HERSMAN has the pole and should be close all the way. (5) BLINDSIDED was at the back of the pack in last and apparently liked the view because he stayed there. Ships in and faces weaker and earns a long look.

Race 14

(3) CHERRY REBEL has enough early speed to clear to the rail quickly and make her choices from there. Has yet to win this year but has her share of notches on her bridle over the years. (1) ANOTHER HAPPY DAY has the rail and little to beat. Could get lucky enough to nail it on the wire. (4) ALLAMERICAN DORA gets the nod to bring home a share by default.

Race 15

(4) JAWORSKI showed some late life in last and that was after a first over trip in prior effort. If he has anything to be proud of, `Jaws' can show it tonight. (6) FIRMS RANDSOME was a good try second best two back. (3) RELLA ON ATTACK made wide moves last two and moves in a bit. With a second-over trip he could be the one.

Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: HARPER BLUE CHIP (2nd)

Spot Play: EAGLE MOLLY (1st)

Race 1

(10) EAGLE MOLLY raced very well in her latest against tougher foes. She'll need to overcome post 10, but has the credentials and top connections in her corner. (4) LINDYSBATHINBEAUTY draws inside, was an open length winner from two back and comes from the Antonacci stable. (5) ARTISTIC FUSION gets post relief, has the speed and gets Condren in the bike. Expect a price on her as she's capable of a rebound effort.

Race 2

(3) HARPER BLUE CHIP is the horse to beat based on his record this season and recent third-place effort in the Hambletonian. (8) OLE JACK MAGIC has a good record this season, races against his own kind in here and shows 1:54 speed. (6) MOONLIGHT ESPOIR comes from the Beaver barn, is versatile and shows the speed. He may offer a price and is a threat for the triactor.

Race 3

(1) MR LINDY posted a pair of strong qualifying efforts at Vernon Downs and appears to be ready for his first career start. (2) CAVIART GRIFFIN finally draws a favorable post and likely will make the most of it. (9) P L HOUDINI trotted home in :27 4/5 last week to finish fourth and continues to improve. He'll offer a low price in here this week.

Race 4

(3) SHES DANGEROUS has been a threat in this class for many weeks, comes from the Alagna barn and won at this level two back. (6) HAUTE COUTURE has a good record this season, enjoys racing from off a helmet and drops in class. (10) SAM will need to overcome post 10, but has the speed and should offer a price. She comes from the Dean barn and was a game second two starts back in this class.

Race 5

(7) JETPEDIA won the opening round last week impressively and appears to be the horse to beat. (4) SOUTHWIND STRYKER comes from the Maxwell barn and qualified very strongly in his lone effort. (3) HOMEN DRY also comes from the Maxwell barn, hasn't missed the board in two starts this season and is a good option for the triactor.

Race 6

(7) P L HERCULES has won two straight, including a 1:54 3/5 effort in his most recent. He's in top form right now and will get a lot of attention. (6) BRITISH STEEL comes from the Svanstedt barn, gets Jamieson in the bike and continues to improve. (2) ENTRANCED draws inside and raced well in the Canadian Breeders two back. He's been much better in his last three.

Race 7

(4) VITAL SIGN has won two of his last three, including a lifetime best last week in this class. (8) WORLD PEACE did all the work last week in this class before settling for second as the favorite. He poses as a top threat again this week. (5) WOGGY ROCKS qualified well for trainer Herlihy and has terrific gate speed. He may offer a price.

Race 8

(9) RUDY RUDCO closed well last week to finish second and has three wins from six starts this season. (2) PAGE IN TIME draws inside and has missed the board once from six starts this season. (1) MARIO BI gets the rail, comes from the Henriksen barn and adds Lasix to his program. He hasn't been at his best in recent outings and is due for a turnaround effort.

Race 9

(2) MIGRATE BLUE CHIP comes out of the Dream Maker Series and into this easier field. His individual time of 1:53 1/5 makes him a top threat. (4) MITT JAGGER won his lone qualifier by open lengths in 1:56 4/5. He has top breeding and connections in his favor. (7) ROCKIN IN HEAVEN has won two straight, comes from the Moore barn and has missed the board once from five starts this season.

Race 10

(6) MUSCLE MATTERS adds Lasix to his program and has finished second in each of his three starts this season. He's due for a win! (3) SEE THE WIND draws inside, comes from the Beaver barn and is a top candidate in this contest. (8) MAXIMUSCLE is a youngster we don't know much about while racing in Quebec. He shows quick speed over the half-mile track oval and has won five of seven this season.

Race 11

(10) VAL DI NOTO has won three straight and is capable of the class jump. (9) WANNA ROCK N ROLL hasn't missed the board in three starts and has been a constant threat in this class. (4) PALM BEACH HANOVER comes from the Menary barn, has a good record this season and may offer a fair price. She has the speed and gets Jamieson in the bike.

Yonkers: Thursday 8/14 Analysis
By Brewster Smith

DRF HARNESS

MEET STATS: 233 - 901 / $1,495.90 BEST BETS: 19 - 75 / $82.10

Best Bet: ROCK ME GENTLY (5th)

Spot Play: EVERYMILEAMEMORY (10th)

Race 1

(1) PENN TURBO TED makes his return to Yonkers where he has done his best running. The rail slot & Sears should get this gelding back to his winning ways. (4) ARTS BLAZE & (2) LEMON DROP HALL both of these get post relief.

Race 2

(8) BREW MASTER Tough break in his latest. Trotter has fine speed and if things work right, he can take this at his best. (5) ANTHONYSKYWALKER needs a better trip to contend with this group; maybe. (2) CASHCO is knocking at the door; threat.

Race 3

(5) YOU LITTLE RASCAL put in a mild bid last out at Pocono. Maybe the move back to Yonkers could put this gal right square in the mix. (3) SPECIAL KIM could contend with these with Brennan at the helm. (8) UPFRONTWHOSURLADY rallied strongly for win honors last time out.

Race 4

(5) SOUTHWIND LEA has been good in her last three tries. Can boss this group with a fine-timed drive from Brennan. (6) JAG OUT moved too soon and had to settle for the show spot recently; big threat. (4) MOWET BLUE CHIP can be a mild factor in here.

Race 5

(2) ROCK ME GENTLY was sent down the road for all the glory last time out for this Two-year-old miss. Two-peat is clearly not out of the question. (5) BETTORS MAGIC closed well for the placing; main danger. (1) BUGATTI BEAUTY has wheeled off four straight victories; beware again.

Race 6

(2) YOUNG AMERICAN moves to the 2-hole and that could help her cause to make tonight a winning one. (1) QUICKSILVERCANDY A raced evenly recently; major player. (6) CAMPHOR HANOVER took the pocket route home to glory last time around.

Race 7

Unbeaten (3) SASSA HANOVER catches a weak select group and should keep on her winning ways. (4) MOSQUITO BLUE CHIP could not catch the top pick in her last try; second best. (1) OUR HOT MAJORETTE fits well in here.

Race 8

(1) CHERRY BLISS moves to the fence and has tactical speed. Pacing miss can get it done tonight. (2) A AND GS DESIGN made the move too soon last out but she could factor from the two slot. (5) GRACE SEELSTER Speedy mare will be the one to catch.

Race 9

(6) BETTOR N BETTER She came up a little short last out. Pacing miss should get back on the winning track. (4) BAND OF ANGELS is unbeaten and she will be the one to deny. (3) ZIP CODE ENVY completes the trifecta.

Race 10

(2) EVERYMILEAMEMORY put in a good effort in her last trip to the post. Pacing mare can take these to task for all the glory. (4) SPRINGHOUSE STAR was second best in her recent try. (1) CAT CORA should fare well from the fence.

Race 11

(4) MC DYNAMITE Clearly this gelding is knocking at the door. Ready to break it down and bring home all the bacon. (6) TRIP HANOVER Philly invader is quite sharp; big threat. (1) DVCFLYINGFRENCHMAN put in a game effort for the second spot in his latest.

Race 12

(4) CAVIART CARA gets post relief and Sears signs on to drive; she gets the call. (2) SEA CRUISE HANOVER Sharp for the victory last out against lesser company. (3) SUMMER SNOW put in a mild rally in her last start.

# 6 INVICTUS HANOVER 9/5

# 4 VERBAL ASSAULT 3/1

# 7 SWEET BEACH 7/1

The consensus for this race is that INVICTUS HANOVER is the one to beat. Worth a close look here based on the statistics in the TrackMaster speed fig department alone. The knowledge group noted a very promising affair out of this race horse last time. Hoping for a duplicate of that to end up in the winner's circle. This trainer, and the driver Palone, go together like cookies and milk. Their results together are outstanding. VERBAL ASSAULT - This race horse earned a respectable speed rating last time out. Looks in good shape to come right back. Overall numbers appear really strong. Can't throw out at this point. SWEET BEACH - 66 percent of the time this trainer and horse combo end up in the money. Big players for this one. Comp pace figs say this affair should shape up nicely for this colt. Looking for a big effort.

# 7 REHAB MOUNTAIN 4/1

# 3 WILLIN DYLAN 6/1

# 2 ITS JESSE TIME 8/1

Really keen on the probability of REHAB MOUNTAIN taking down the winner's share today. Horoscope said take a chance today, this entrant is as good as any to take a shot with. The handicapping team gives this horse a really good chance to come home a winner, class numbers are tops in the group of animals. The panel of smart guys noted a substantial effort out of this standardbred last time. Looking for a repeat effort of that to end up in the winner's circle. WILLIN DYLAN - He looks very good in this affair and should find a way to take advantage of favorable pace ratings. Could best this race, just look at the TrackMaster Speed Rating - 89 - from his last affair. ITS JESSE TIME - The consortium gives this harness racer a respectable chance to take this race, class figures are tops in the group of horses.
