Mohawk: Thursday 6/12 Analysis
By Greg Gangle
DRF HARNESS

Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: SHARK LEAP HANOVER (2nd)

Spot Play: ARTISTIC MADISON (7th)

Race 1

(10) CAVIART GRIFFIN will make his first start of the season following a terrific qualifying effort over a 'good' track on June 3. This son of Muscle Mass certainly has the speed and comes out of the Jones barn. (7) COCONUT CREAM made his career debut last week for Mayotte and faired out well. He got away near the back from an outside post and closed very strongly making up ground down the stretch. (4) AVION HANOVER rebounded well in his latest qualifier following a break in stride on May 29 in his career debut.

Race 2

(4) SHARP LEAP HANOVER draws much better this week and can only be better in his second start of the season. (2) OFFICAL CHEROKEE went gate-to-wire last week in his first start of the season for trainer Steacy. (9) ABREATHOFRESHART qualified well for Mayotte on June 6 in a good time and final quarter. He sat in the pocket for most of the mile and closed well. He's versatile and is a good option for the triactor

Race 3

(5) KICKOFF HANOVER has a terrific record this season and performed very well in the debut for Keeling last start. (2) HOPE FOR JUSTICE put his game face on two starts back with a nice performance. (1) WONDERLAND SNOW comes out of the Parsons' barn, which has been excellent this season.

Race 4

(9) GOLDIES MACH debuted for trainer Menary last week and finished second at this class. (4) VAL DI NOTO got a terrific trip by Mayotte and closed very well. (5) LADY HOT SHOT continues to improve with each start this season and paced a :27 3/5 final quarter last week.

Race 5

(1) FRIEND OR FOE has been racing at his best this season, gets the rail and remains at the same level he won at last week. (6) RAMZAM comes out of the Moreau barn and has missed the board once from eight starts this season. (9) DOUBLE DOWN GASS posted a strong qualifier on May 29 and went overlooked by the betting public in his season debut.

Race 6

(1) DANIKA PATRIX hasn't missed the board in all five starts this season and is due for her first career win. (8) WINDSONG KHLOE comes out of the Jamieson barn and raced very well last week after receiving a terrific trip from Davis, Jr. (7) GRACEFUL MELODY was a beaten favorite last week at this level for trainer Moore.

Race 7

(2) ARTISTIC MADISON is my upset play of the night and I'm hoping for a price. She found the winner's circle in her career debut on May 26 at 6-1 and has upset potential. (1) PALM BEACH HANOVER will get a lot of attention in here following her impressive win last week for Jamieson & Menary. (4) CAN ART draws inside once again and will look to improve her final quarter speed that she was lacking last week.

Race 8

(9) CHIVAREE HANOVER banked $100K last season and could be in store for a terrific sophomore season. (1) TYRONE HAJI posted the minor upset in his latest at Western Fair for Hall of Fame conditioner McIntosh. This son of Kadabra trotted a solid mile over that half-mile track oval and that sets him up very well in here. (6) POCKET TRIP has won two straight and three of his last four.

Race 9

(2) BADLYINCLINED put forth a terrific effort last week to finish second in the SBOA final. (5) MY SECRET BELLE faced much older mares last week and paced her fastest mile of her career. She received an inside trip from trainer/driver Hudon and kicked home strong to be timed in 1:51 4/5. (1) SKIPPIN BY hasn't been worse than second in each of her three starts this season.

Race 10

(7) BET YA has won two of her last three, including last week in this class. (6) SAM closed very well to finish second, by a head, to BET YA last week in a speedy time. (4) HIGH FLYIN SARA put forth a terrific effort last week in the debut of trainer McNair. That was a big turnaround effort from her two previous starts at Yonkers Raceway.

KEY STAT: Brazil have won their first match at the last eight World Cups

EXPERT VERDICT: Brazil should kick off the tournament with a win although it might not be straightforward against a decent Croatia side. Nothing less than World Cup glory will appease the home fans but they may have to show some patience in the opening game because Croatia possess plenty of talent and are strong candidates to reach the last 16.

RECOMMENDATION: Brazil 2-1

KEY STAT: Mexico won just two of their ten matches in the final Concacaf qualification group

EXPERT VERDICT: Qualification from the group stage looks like being a tough challenge for Mexico and Cameroon and neither are likely to gain the upper hand in their match in Natal. Mexico struggled to come through a weak qualifying section and lack star quality, while Cameroon have won just one World Cup finals match since reaching the last eight in 1990.

KEY STAT: Spain have lost just one of their last 36 competitive matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Spain have won the last three major tournaments and can remind everyone of their quality by sweeping aside Holland in their Group B opener. Vicente Del Bosque's side everything in place to go all the way and look far superior to the Dutch, who have regressed since reaching the final in 2010.

RECOMMENDATION: Spain

KEY STAT: Greece have failed to score in five of their six World Cup matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Radamel Falcao has been ruled out but even without their star striker, Colombia should have too much quality for Greece in their opening game. Los Cafeteros were second in South American qualifying – only two points behind Argentina – and should have few problems against the defensive-minded opponents.

RECOMMENDATION: Colombia

KEY STAT: Costa Rica have conceded two goals or more in their last four World Cup matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Uruguay are rated strong contenders to win Group D but often make hard work of the easier fixtures and may have to dig deep in their clash with Costa Rica. The draw has been harsh on Costa Rica but they will be highly motivated for the first match and can maintain parity until half-time.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw-Uruguay

#6 STATION CHIEF is the overall speed and pace profile leader in this allowance field this afternoon sprinting at 6.0 furlongs on the dirt, and has nice early speed abilities to compliment. He's hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in two of his three career starts to date, including a "POWER RUN WIN" to break his maiden in his 2nd race back. #4 SIDEARM has hit the board in five straight starts, with three of those efforts also qualifying as "POWER RUNS!"

#4 MAMMY'S GOLD (ML=5/2)

MAMMY'S GOLD - Running over a familiar track, where she has won multiple times before, I have to put this horse at the top of my list of contenders in this race. This tight track favors speedy front running horses breaking from the inside. Seeing as this is what we have with this horse, I'm going to take a long look at this one.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 HIDETHEBLACKGOLD (ML=5/2), #1 LEXS IMAGE (ML=7/2), #5 KELA'S GAME FACE (ML=5/1),

HIDETHEBLACKGOLD - Awfully hard to wager on this runner when she hasn't been showing any gumption recently. LEXS IMAGE - On a downward series. Speed figs keep declining. KELA'S GAME FACE - Hard to put any dough on this mare on the top end. Likes to hit the board though.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Bet on #4 MAMMY'S GOLD to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds

#3 SEBASTIAN INLET (ML=15/1)

SEBASTIAN INLET - Last raced at Golden Gate with a poor post position. I swiped some data from The Brain, and his computer says the inside should be a big help to this one today. Ran last time around the track against a much better field at Golden Gate. The move down in the class scale should suit him well. Trying to win for the first time moving from a race on the turf to the main track. I think Lucas will have him fit and in good condition for today's contest.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 ARTAKSEZ (ML=9/5), #6 CATS EGO (ML=5/2), #5 LOST IN THE PARADE (ML=3/1),

ARTAKSEZ - Tough to keep stabbing at this sort of 'bridesmaid' horse. Once you've got at least ten races at the venue and still have no wins, its tough to break through for a victory. CATS EGO - This gelding finished off the board on March 29th and wasn't close to victory last time out either. LOST IN THE PARADE - Hard to invest in at 3/1 odds after the two most recent outings.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Go with #3 SEBASTIAN INLET on top if we're getting at least 1/1 odds

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 5 DEPLOYINGRESOURCES 8/5

# 3 MONROE'S HOPE 5/2

# 4 MOON HARBOR 8/1

DEPLOYINGRESOURCES is my choice. Is worth considering and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figures (72 average) at today's distance and surface recently. His 70 average has this gelding with among the best Equibase Speed Figs in this event. The speed fig of 77 from his last affair looks decent in here. MONROE'S HOPE - Looks very good versus this group of horses in this race and ought to be one of the early speedsters. Could beat this group of horses given the 70 Equibase speed fig posted in his last outing. MOON HARBOR - Brown has well above average profits at this distance/surface.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 13 CITY LOVER 5/1

# 10 BYARS LADY 4/1

# 9 SHECKY LUCKY LEE 12/1

CITY LOVER is the most competitive bet in this race. Balderas has shown excellent profits (+33 return on investment ) with horses in turf route events. BYARS LADY - Has to be considered against this group displaying decent figs recently and an average speed figure of 77 under similar conditions. The Equibase speed fig of 73 from her last race looks very good in here. SHECKY LUCKY LEE - Ran a solid last race. She has been racing soundly lately while recording very strong Equibase Speed Figures.

Preview: Blue Jays (39-28) at Orioles (33-31)

Game: 1
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
Date: June 12, 2014 7:05 PM EDT

The Toronto Blue Jays may have cooled off but Mark Buehrle certainly hasn't.

Buehrle looks to record his major league-leading 11th win Thursday night when the Blue Jays open a four-game road series against the Baltimore Orioles.

Perhaps no player has contributed more to the Blue Jays' surprising position atop the AL East than Buehrle (10-2, 2.04 ERA), who has recorded 11 quality starts in 13 outings. The veteran left-hander has already reached double-digit wins for the 14th straight season and is just two shy of matching last year's total.

He failed to win his seventh consecutive decision Saturday against St. Louis despite allowing one run and five hits over seven innings in a 5-0 loss. Buehrle, who matched a season high with five walks, surrendered only his third homer in 88 1-3 innings.

That defeat ended a six-game win streak for Toronto (39-28), which has scored seven runs and batted .205 while losing four of five.

The Blue Jays, who still rank near the top of the AL in most offensive categories, were in danger of being shut out for the fourth time in five games Wednesday before scoring twice in the eighth inning of a 7-2 loss to Minnesota.

"I think we've cooled off pretty good, pretty much top to bottom in the lineup ... but that's the way it goes," manager John Gibbons said. "The key is you can't prolong the struggles. You've got to put an end to them. The bats will heat up again, hopefully sooner than later."

Gibbons would like to see Edwin Encarnacion's bat heat back up. The slugger is 2 for 18 with one home run in five games after batting .324 with 17 homers and 33 RBIs over his previous 29 contests.

Toronto may not need much offense in the opener of a 10-game trip Thursday. Buehrle is 5-0 with a 1.47 ERA in six road starts this season, including a seven-inning, one-run outing April 13 in an 11-3 win at Baltimore.

This is a favorable matchup, though, for several Orioles batters. Nick Markakis (.429), Adam Jones (.385), Delmon Young (.378) and Chris Davis (.375) have all handled Buehrle well, combining for eight homers.

Baltimore's success against division opponents continued Wednesday with a 6-0 victory over Boston, as Davis hit a two-run homer in support of Wei-Yin Chen's seventh win.

The Orioles (33-31) have won seven of eight against the AL East, a run that started with consecutive victories over Toronto in late April.

They allowed one run in the three-game series against the defending World Series champions.

'I was real pleased and proud of the way our guys pitched the last three days, all of them, the bullpen, too,' manager Buck Showalter said. 'They came in and did what they're supposed to do and we didn't have to get anybody up behind them.'

Jones had a run-scoring double and is 16 for 40 with four homers and 11 RBIs in nine games this month.

Kevin Gausman (1-1, 4.91) makes his second start for Baltimore in place of the injured Miguel Gonzalez. The right-hander earned his first win as a starter Saturday, allowing one run and four hits with six strikeouts in seven innings of a 6-3 victory over Oakland.

Gausman made his major league debut at Toronto on May 23, 2013, and gave up four runs and seven hits over seven innings in a 12-6 loss.

O's, Jays keep scorekeeper busy in recent meetings
Andrew Avery

When the Baltimore Orioles host the Toronto Blue Jays Thursday, savvy totals bettors will look for the two AL East clubs to rack up the runs once again.

The Over is 4-0 in the past four meetings between the ball clubs as they've averaged just under 15 runs per game over that stretch.

The home team will send Kevin Gausman to the hill, while the Jays will counter with Mark Buehrle. The total is currently 8.5.

Padres cashing with Tichenor behind the plate
Andrew Avery

Currently toiling well below .500, the San Diego Padres don't win with a whole lot of frequency. But they'll certainly welcome Todd Tichenor to call balls and strikes Thursday.

The Friars are 5-0 in their last five ball games with Tichenor behind the plate and that's where the umpire will be when the Pads wrap up a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love Thursday.

Scheduled starters are Eric Stults for San Diego and Kyle Kendrick for the Phils.
