UNC Wilmington vs Virginia

Thursday March 16, 12:40 EST

I love fading all the ESPN Bracketology guys because they do not know jack crap about the Las Vegas Line and they tend to direct the average Joe sports bettor this time of year with their opinions. They all love the upset special here and made the Seahawks a public darling and the ol boring Cavs who have no offense. Remember it is Entertainment and hype for the tourney that drives ratings boys, not free winners against the Las Vegas line over the airwaves. You can leave that up to Brent Musbuger and Jimmy Vacarro now on Sirius Radio since they have anointed them suddenly betting experts (seriously up for debate BIG TIME), who are throwing out parlays like candy at a main street parade in a small town on July 4th.

That said Virginia is the top defensive in the country and if you doubt their prowess, please refer to exhibit A: They held North Carolina in their last meeting to half of their season offense average and beat them silly. The Cavs come from the mighty ACC conference who may have 2 teams in the Final 4, and this is a battle tested team who does struggle on offense at times, but when you hold opponent’s to 53 ppg for the season, you can afford to struggle on offense and still win. Did I mention they played in the ACC?

NC Wilmington is not without merit at 29-5 on the year, and they won the Colonial Conference Crown and beat all teams in that tourney by 9 or more points. The CAA conference is like a soap scrimmage compared to the ACC and this is where strength of schedule and opponents RPI ratings prove their worth. The size and strength and depth of Virginia shines here.

Bonus Play on Virginia in Round 1 Thursday- The Las Vegas Line is -7

NCAA-B | Bucknell vs West Virginia
Play on: Bucknell +14 -110 at BMaker

Thursday CBB Bonus Play. My selection is on Bucknell plus the points over West Virginia at 2:45 pm et on Thursday.

I’ll grab the points with Bucknell in this NCAA Tournament Round of 64 matchup on Thursday afternoon.

We’re already hearing the Mountaineers talk about not looking ahead to a potential matchup against Notre Dame in the next round. Just the fact that it has been a talking point leading up to the tournament leads me to believe they very well could be caught peering into the future.

That would be a mistake against a game Bucknell squad that is appearing in the Big Dance for the first time since 2003. Some will discredit the Bison’s Patriot League title as they secured it by winning on their home floor. Bucknell is certainly mindful of West Virginia’s frenetic press style of defense and will need to take care of the basketball in order to have any shot at pulling the upset here.

I simply feel that the Mountaineers are being asked to lay too many points in this one. Take Bucknell (10*).

NCAA-B | Princeton vs Notre Dame
Play on: Notre Dame -6½ -108 at 5Dimes

Take Notre Dame (#718)

Pointspreads tend to be very accurate by this time of the year. Both the oddsmakers and the broader betting markets have a full seasons worth of data to punch into their computers. The end result is that the numbers -- both sides and total -- are consistently right where they are supposed to be.

So when bettors are looking for an edge at this time of the year, they’re going to have to dig for information that is not factored into the numbers. Given the full season results and stats for Princeton and Notre Dame, this pointspread is as accurate as it gets. But when it comes to key tidbits of info? Well, that’s where we can find an edge.

Princeton was forced to leave New Jersey on Monday due to the East Coast blizzard; more than 24 hours ahead of schedule. That wouldn’t necessarily be a big deal, except for the fact that the Tigers played in the first ever Ivy League Championship Game on Sunday, creating a mad scramble for a team from a conference that has never had a conference tourney before.

Here are the pertinent quotes from Tigers Director of Basketball Operations Chris Mongilia, in his first year on the job at Princeton: “We've been booking buses and hotels. It's been putting a lot of pressure on us to get everything done and organized. But yeah, it's been crazy."

More from Mongilia, talking about how his players have to deal with midterm exams this week: “A lot of our guys are going to have to take exams proctored by a professor who is going to have to travel with us. They are going to have to take them in a conference room up at the hotel in Buffalo. The storm has definitely put a few bumps in our travel plans."

Princeton is an Ivy League school, and midterm exams are no joke. There’s a huge difference mentally between cramming and taking the tests before leaving town for the tourney versus bringing all their study materials with them and dealing with intense, high pressure exams in a hotel conference room in between practice time in the 48 hours leading up to tip-off. The fact that this is an early start game only exacerbates the problem for the Tigers. Plan and simple, I’m not expecting Princeton’s ‘A’ game here!

The broader betting markets pay no attention to intangible factors like this one – it’s all about the algorithms that generate pointspreads. Hence the early $$ for Princeton, driving this line down to -6.5 as I write this, with the potential for this line to get driven down even further. That puts Notre Dame into the ‘bargain’ price range, worthy of a wager here. Take the Fighting Irish.

NCAA-B | Princeton vs Notre Dame
Play on: Notre Dame -6½ -110 at BMaker

ASA is on a SIZZLING RUN heading into the Big Dance! They have CASHED on 9 of their last 12 CBB Top Plays (75%) and 14 of their last 19 premium picks overall! Don't miss their NIT & NCAA picks for Wednesday Night and Thursday!

ASA PLAY ON Notre Dame -6.5 over Princeton, Thursday at 12:15 PM ET

Despite playing in the ACC Championship game, the Irish actually have the advantage of an extra day off here. That’s because they played that game on Saturday while Princeton played in the Ivy League Championship game on Sunday. The Tigers have won 19 straight games but the fact is they’ve only played one top 100 team during that entire stretch and that ended in just a 2 point win vs Bucknell and that was way back on Dec 22. Bucknell is one of just two NCAA tourney teams that Princeton faced this year. The other was VCU who beat the Tigers by 11. Speaking of top 100 teams, Princeton played only 5 of those this year and Bucknell was their only win. Compare that to Notre Dame who was playing top 10 & 20 teams on a regular basis. The Irish played 23 top 100 teams this year. They played 3 top 20 teams in the ACC tourney alone beating UVA, FSU, before blowing a lead and losing to Duke. They are a great shooting team that makes FT’s (#1 in the country at 80%), and almost never turns the ball over (#1 in lowest turnover %). Princeton is a very slow paced team and we felt if they matched up against a team they could slow down and frustrate, they might be able to hang. Not here. Notre Dame is fine playing fast or slow. This is a bad match up for Princeton. The number is quite low as ND is the much better team. We’ll lay it.

NCAA-B | South Dakota State vs Gonzaga
Play on: Gonzaga -22 -110 at betonline

Bonus Play from Doc’s Sports. #738 Take Gonzaga over South Dakota State (Thursday 2 pm TBS) This is not as strong of Jackrabbit team as in past tournament teams and thus the Bulldogs will make short work of them on Thursday. Not many people are giving Gonzaga a chance to reach the Final Four but I am one who feels they can go all the way. They are not a finesse by any means with strength in the post and great guard play. They have lost just one game this season and beat the No. 2 seed handily during nonconference play. SDSU was extremely lucky to win their last two games of the Summit Conference Tournament and they are just happy to be here. Gonzaga has not only been winning games this year they have been covering the spread as well going 35-15 ATS (1 push) in their last 51 games overall. Do not miss out on Doc’s Sports March Madness packages giving you action all the way through the Final Four in Glendale, AZ.

KEY STAT: Manchester United are unbeaten in 22 home games

EXPERT VERDICT: Manchester United were hampered by Rostov’s poor surface in last week’s 1-1 draw but should put on a much-improved display back at Old Trafford. The Red Devils still managed to grab a valuable away goal in the first leg and should romp to victory at their Manchester fortress with Zlatan Ibrahimovic returning from a domestic ban.

RECOMMENDATION: Man Utd-Man Utd double result

NBA | Jazz vs Cavs
Play on: Cavs -7 -105 at 5Dimes

1 Unit Bonus Play on Cleveland Cavaliers -7

I like the spot for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are 3-0 ATS in their last three games overall and coming off a 128-96 blowout over Detroit on Tuesday. The Cavs will be out for revenge from a 92-100 road loss at Utah earlier this year, but they never win in Salt Lake City. They are 27-7 at home this season and rarely will you find them as this small of a favorite at home. Utah will be playing the 2nd of a back-to-back and its 3rd game in 4 days after a trip to Detroit last night. And the Jazz could be short-handed with Derrick Favors out, Rodney Hood doubtful and Shelvin Mack questionable. Utah is 1-8 ATS as a dog of 3.5 to 9.5 points this season. Cleveland is 9-1 ATS in home games off a win over a division rival over the last two years.

NCAA-B | Vanderbilt vs Northwestern
Play on: Northwestern +2½ -105 at 5Dimes

10* Free NCAAB Pick (Northwestern +2.5)

Northwestern is worth a look here as a dog against the Commodores. This is the first time Northwestern has been in the NCAA Tournament and most just assume they aren't going to be able to handle the spotlight. I know this team struggled a bit down the stretch, but injures played a big part in that. They got back on track in their final few games and let's not forget this is a team that had non-conference wins over Wake Forest and Dayton, plus had a 2-point loss in a true road game at Butler and a 4-point loss on a neutral court against Notre Dame. On the flip side of this, Vanderbilt lost by 10 to Butler on a neutral court and at Dayton. They also had a 14 point loss to Marquette. I'm just not buying the SEC outside of Kentucky. Give me Northwestern +2.5!

NCAA-B | Winthrop vs Butler
Play on: Winthrop +11½ -110 at BMaker

I'm grabbing the points with Winthrop on Thursday. Winthrop is all about hard-nosed defensive play and they're one of the best in college basketball in possessions per game on average. One preview mentioned the only team Butler played this season with possession numbers like Winthrop was Creighton and the Bulldogs lost both of those games. Winthrop is 30th in the nation in FG percentage allowed and they're 20th defending the 3-pointer. Keon Johnson (22 ppg) should enjoy facing a Butler squad that ranks 207th in FG percentage defense. And if the Eagles take care of the ball, they could make this one very close. Butler is on a 2-6 ATS slide as chalk, while Winthrop is 8-1 ATS on a neutral court under HC Pat Kelsey. We'll take the points with Winthrop, our Shocker on Thursday. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

NCAA-B | Virginia Tech vs Wisconsin
Play on: Virginia Tech +5½ -110 at 5Dimes

Virginia Tech +5.5

The Hokies catch 5.5 points here on Thursday and have some value at this number. Wisconsin really hasn't found much consistency this season. They aren't overwhelming on offense which is a strong edge here for Virginia Tech.

The Hokies put in nearly 80 points per game, while the Badgers are nearly 10 points less than that. This isn't an ideal matchup for the Badgers, as they have to be very careful not to let the Hokies run on them.

Some trends to note. Hokies are 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record. Hokies are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 neutral site games.

Grab the points here. This is too many in this given situation. Back Virginia Tech ATS.

Good Luck, Razor Ray.

NCAA-B | VCU vs St. Mary's
Play on: St. Mary's -4½ -110 at GTBets

Wednesday's PERFECT card brought Ben Burns to a SWEET 6-1 on the week. Going back a couple weeks finds Ben at a SENSATIONAL 61-36, good for more than $16K in profits. "Top rated" plays are on a SICK 38-19 RUN. Top CBB plays are 8-1 the L9. HUGE Thursday starts BRIGHT AND EARLY with Burns' latest BREAKFAST CLUB. You in?

The Gaels were an impressive 28-1 this season against teams not named Gonzaga. They were 25-1 SU in games in which they were favored, covering at a 15-8-3 ATS clip. In fact, while they did have a couple of games land right on the number, its been more than a month since they failed to cover, when laying points. Going back further finds the Gaels at a lucrative 45-25 ATS the past few seasons, when laying points.

While the Gaels thrived as favorites, the Rams were 0-4 SU/ATS this season, when getting points.

While the Rams want to push the pace, the Gaels, who allow a mere 56.5 ppg, do an excellent job at controlling and slowing down the tempo. Speaking of "tempo," as of this writing, most shops have an O/U line of 130. Thats noteworthy as the Rams are a money-burning 1-10-1 ATS the last 12 times that they played a game with an O/U line in the -130 to -139.5 range. Consider St. Mary's.

NCAA-B | Furman vs South Carolina Upstate
Play on: South Carolina Upstate +4½ -110 at 5Dimes

Brad Diamond Sports is a PERFECT 7-0 ATS in CBB March Madness

South Carolina Upstate Spartans+ (752) over Furman

Here we have two units in the CIT coming off conference tourney losses, but the more challenged unit today will be the stronger contingent Furman (21-11). Granted Furman has the more talented unit averaging 74 points a game, with a splendid defense (66.0). However, they are on a 1-3 SU after losing to Samford 67-63 in the conference tourney. Furman had defeated Samford twice earlier in the campaign. This is a clear issue for the emotional level of the favorite who will expect to handle a unit from a softer conference. No doubt Furman the more solid floor unit but would suggest charting their first-half turnovers and time of possession, as SC (17-15) will try and run up and down the floor. Furman could frustrate the opposition by controlling the pace. Overall I don't trust Furman's mental stability knowing they could just play an average and win. I expect the line to move more to Furman as the day (7:31 AM Eastern) progresses, so if you're playing the underdog, BUY LATE! South Carolina is 5-2-2 ATS as an underdog. Good Luck.

SPECIAL NOTE:

Play this game late as we expect Furman money to be enhanced by their reputation.

NBA | Clippers vs Nuggets
Play on: Nuggets -4 -105 at 5Dimes

Dave's Thursday Bonus Play:

1* on Denver Nuggets -4

The Key: This is a very difficult situation for the Los Angeles Clippers. They will be playing the 2nd of a back-to-back here and their 3rd game in 4 days. Now they have to go into the altitude and face a surging Denver Nuggets squad that is playing tremendous basketball right now. The Nuggets are 6-2 SU & 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall, winning their last three games by 20 over Boston, by 13 at Sacramento and by 28 over the Lakers. Now they've had two days off having last played on Monday. The Clippers are expected to be without Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan due to rest tonight. Los Angeles is 2-5 ATS in its last 7 when playing on 0 days rest. The Clippers are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record. The Nuggets are 21-7 ATS in their last 28 games after scoring more than 125 points in their previous game. Take Denver.
